Effect Of Arousal On Decision Making In The Iowa Gambling Task, Erica Herzig
Effect Of Arousal On Decision Making In The Iowa Gambling Task, Erica Herzig
Theses & ETDs
The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a tool used to measure decision making, yet the cognitive components which determine performance on this task have not been established. Two separate cognitive components may work together. One constituent may detect net estimated value, and the other frequency of gains and losses. Loading executive functions has been shown to block participants' ability to calculate net estimated value, while leaving the ability to determine frequency of losses intact. Previous research has found that emotional arousal aids in performance on the IGT. The goal of the current study was to verify the existence of two …
Rebel Within A Clause Innovation In The Poetry Of Xue Tao, Anna Lewis
Rebel Within A Clause Innovation In The Poetry Of Xue Tao, Anna Lewis
Theses & ETDs
This thesis studies the work of Xue Tao (768-831), a woman poet of Tang China (618-907). By the time Xue Tao began writing a rich Chinese poetic tradition already existed, as well as a long standing convention of using gendered personas within certain genres. In her poetry, Xue Tao plays with these conventions, manipulating traditional representations of gendered voice and creating from them an original, distinct voice. An example can be seen in her blending of the voices of two well established poetic stereotypes "the lonely woman" and "the banished scholar" in her Banishment Poetry. She further explores the use …
Predation Behavior Of Octopus Joubini Cuvier, Benjamin Merlino
Predation Behavior Of Octopus Joubini Cuvier, Benjamin Merlino
Theses & ETDs
Octopuses make decisions while foraging based on a range of factors, including prey size, prey species, habitat foraged and availability of prey. This thesis examines the overall predation behavior of Octopus joubini on gastropods and Pagurus sp. A total of 7 octopuses were studied in situ and observed for overall behavior. Shells of consumed prey were observed for the presence of drill holes, locations of holes on drilled shells, and overall shell size. Object interaction and prey preference was also noted. Shells were collected and organized into groups of drilled and intact, then further arranged by size. It was found …
Nothing Is Real. Everything Is True., Emily Martin
Nothing Is Real. Everything Is True., Emily Martin
Theses & ETDs
In trompe l'oeil painting, the meticulous, ritualistic reproduction of ordinary objects results in both metaphysical and formal problems, which I examine in various ways in "Nothing is Real. Everything is True." The tradition of trompe l'oeil, whose strictest form originates from seventeenth-century Netherlands, intentionally lacks narrative, pictorial depth, and temporal relativity. The exact replication of the object(s) causes a tension between the figurative and literal interpretations of the painting, creating the potential reading of the painting as a treatise on representation, perspective, and the principles of reality. This work is further situated within the theoretical framework of Jean Baudrillard, Roland …
Historical And Modern Conceptualization Of Adhd: A Neurobiological Perspective, Nikolas Santamaria
Historical And Modern Conceptualization Of Adhd: A Neurobiological Perspective, Nikolas Santamaria
Theses & ETDs
This paper seeks not only to analyze the current neurobiological concepts of attention deficit disorder, but to examine the disorder from a historical perspective and to study its development. The historical review begins with Hippocrates and studies its evolution of the disorder throughout the 20th century, including early neurobiological theories such as minimal brain damage/dysfunction and the catecholamine hypothesis. Through studying the history, it seems that some but not all of the behavioral disorders observed could have been fact attention deficit disorder. Due to the complexity and diversity of the symptoms of attention deficit disorder, symptoms closer to the genetic …

Staphylococcus aureus is a highly virulent and successful pathogen that causes a diverse array of diseases. Recently, an increase of severe infections in healthy subjects has been observed, caused by community-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA). The reason for enhanced CA-MRSA virulence is unclear; however, work suggests that it results from hypersecretion of agr-regulated toxins, including secreted proteases. In this study, we explore the contribution of exo-proteases to CA-MRSA pathogenesis using a mutant lacking all 10 enzymes. We show that they are required for growth in peptide-rich environments, serum, in the presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), and in human blood. …
Lispector Y Valenzuela: Hacia Una Poética Del Devenir, Fatima R. Nogueira
Lispector Y Valenzuela: Hacia Una Poética Del Devenir, Fatima R. Nogueira
The Coastal Review
Considering the metaliterary focalization as well as the importance of sensible and sensorial traits in the novels El gato eficaz by Luisa Valenzuela and Un soplo de vida by Clarice Lispector this study proposes the realization of a becoming poetics in both literary works, in the sense that Deleuze and Guattari have developed the theory of becoming. Such an aesthetic is based mainly on two significant factors: first, the transformation of the subject in a virtual entity; secondly, the conversion of the discourse into a modality of becoming guided by a proliferation of voices, planes and fictions.

Epigenetics In Critical Illness: A New Frontier, Brian T. Graves, Cindy L. Munro
Nursing Faculty Publications
Epigenetics is the study of alterations in the function of genes that do not involve changes in the DNA sequence. Within the critical care literature, it is a relatively new and exciting avenue of research in describing pathology, clinical course, and developing targeted therapies to improve outcomes. In this paper, we highlight current research relative to critical care that is focused within the major epigenetic mechanisms of DNA methylation, histone modification, microRNA regulation, and composite epigenetic scoring. Within this emerging body of research it is quite clear that the novel therapies of the future will require clinicians to understand and …

One metabolism trial and 2 finishing trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of adding corn bran and steep liquor (steep) in replacement of dry-rolled corn (DRC) on diet digestibility, cattle performance, and nutrient mass balance in open feedlot pens. The metabolism trial (Exp. 1) used 8 ruminally cannulated heifers in a 4 × 4 Latin square design and the 2 finishing trials used 128 steer calves fed for 167 d (Exp. 2) and 256 yearling steers fed for 126 d (Exp. 3). Dietary treatments for all trials included a DRC-based control (CON), 30% corn bran (30/0), 30% corn bran …

The Effect Of Myostatin Genotype On Body Temperature During Extreme Temperature Events, J. T. Howard, Stephen D. Kachman, Merlyn K. Nielsen, Terry L. Mader, Matthew L. Spangler
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Extreme heat and cold events can create deleterious physiological changes in cattle as they attempt to cope. The genetic background of animals can influence their response to these events. The objective of the current study was to determine the impact of myostatin genotype (MG) on body temperature during periods of heat and cold stress. Two groups of crossbred steers and heifers of unknown pedigree and breed fraction with varying percentages of Angus, Simmental, and Piedmontese were placed in a feedlot over 2 summers and 2 winters. Before arrival, animals were genotyped for the Piedmontese-derived myostatin mutation (C313Y) to determine their …

Review: Life-Cycle, Total-Industry Genetic Improvement Of Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle: Blueprint For The Beef Improvement Federation, Merlyn K. Nielsen, M. D. Macneil, J. C. M. Dekkers, D. H. Crews Jr., T. A. Rathje, R. Mark Enns, R. L. Weaber
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
On a life-cycle basis, beef animals are able to consume large amounts of low-cost, low-quality forages relative to higher-cost concentrates compared with pigs and chickens. However, of the 3, beef is still more expensive to produce on a cost–per–edible pound basis. Accordingly, there is need for genetic programs and management changes that will improve efficiency, sustainability, and profitability of beef production. Options include improving reproductive rate, reducing feed used for maintenance, or both, while not reducing output. A goal for improving efficiency of feed utilization is to reduce the amount or proportion of feed used for maintenance. Such reduction is …

Genetic Evaluation Of Days To Harvest In Crossbred Lambs, R. M. Lewis, G. C. Marquez, M. H. Davies, D. R. Notter, Rainer Roehe, L. Bünger, G. Simm
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Days to harvest (DTH) is the number of days a lamb is fed before reaching a target level of fatness. Although economically relevant, this trait has not been thoroughly evaluated in sheep. Most lambs harvested in the United Kingdom are crossbreds sired by purebred terminal sires, with Charollais, Suffolk, and Texel most commonly used. Sires from these breeds were selected on an index designed to increase lean growth while constraining fat. The purpose of this research was to 1) evaluate the effects of index selection in terminal sires on DTH and 2) evaluate the feasibility of incorporating DTH into genetic …

Evaluation Of Modifications To The Neutral-Detergent-Fiber Analysis Procedure For Corn And Distillers Grains Plus Solubles, C. D. Buckner, T. J. Klopfenstein, G. E. Erickson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Six experiments were conducted to evaluate methods for measuring NDF in corn and distillers grains plus solubles. Methods included using sodium sulfite, α-amylase (AMY), amyloglucosidase, heat and steam with an autoclave, grinding methods, and a pre–fat extraction to decrease factors that interfere with measuring NDF accurately. Using sodium sulfite and AMY resulted in decreased (P < 0.01) corn NDF values, but these decreases were different dependent on dry-rolled corn or high-moisture corn (interaction P < 0.01). Two doses of AMY (0.5 mL each) was optimum at decreasing dry-rolled corn, high-moisture corn, and steam-flaked corn NDF, but using amyloglucosidase, heat and steam with an autoclave, or both did not aid in decreasing corn NDF. Grinding corns through a 1-mm Tecator Cyclomill, compared with a Wiley mill, resulted in decreased corn NDF (P < 0.01). Using a pre–fat extraction method before the traditional NDF method resulted in decreased NDF values for distillers grains plus solubles (P < 0.01) compared with using 100 or 200 mL of NDF solution. The recommended methods for obtaining accurate NDF concentrations include using cyclo grinding and adding two 0.5 mL of AMY doses and 0.5 g of sodium sulfite for corn and pre–fat extraction for distillers grains plus solubles.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Under current U.S. fabrication methods the beef forequarter is divided into chuck and rib subprimals at the fifth/sixth rib junction. Forequarter breaks at the third/fourth and fourth/fifth rib junctions were evaluated in six beef carcasses each. Chuck roll subprimals from both fabrication methods were prepared. All muscles were weighed and a shear force assessment was conducted on steaks from the Longissimus dorsi. There were no differences in tenderness between 3, 4, or 5 rib Longissimus dorsi steaks, and all steak locations assessed were rated as tender. These data suggest an alternative break point between the rib and chuck could increase …

The National Research Council (NRC) has indicated that effective instruction in colleges of agriculture should prepare students to enter a dynamically changing workplace by helping students learn to be proficient in 21st century skills. The NRC suggested that effective instruction in colleges of agriculture should encompass a hospitable learning environment that includes a variety of learning activities that reach higher levels of cognition. The purpose of this study was to observe instructors in a college of agriculture who have been deemed successful and examine their teaching behaviors. This study investigated the learning activities used by these instructors, the cognitive level …
Sedentism, Social Change, Warfare, And The Bow In The Ancient Pueblo Southwest, Paul F. Reed, Phil R. Geib
Sedentism, Social Change, Warfare, And The Bow In The Ancient Pueblo Southwest, Paul F. Reed, Phil R. Geib
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In the ancient American Southwest, use of the bow developed relatively rapidly among Pueblo people by the fifth century AD. This new technology replaced the millennia-old atlatl and dart weaponry system. Roughly 150 years later in the AD 600s, Pueblo socioeconomic organization began to evolve rapidly, as many groups adopted a much more sedentary life. Multiple factors converged to allow this sedentary pattern to emerge, but the role of the bow in this process has not been fully explored. In this paper, we trace the development of the bow and discuss its role as sedentism emerged and social changes occurred …
