The δ15N values of organisms are commonly used across diverse ecosystems to estimate trophic position and infer trophic connectivity. We undertook a novel cross-basin comparison of trophic position in two ecologically well-characterized and different groups of dominant mid-water fish consumers using amino acid nitrogen isotope compositions. We found that trophic positions estimated from the δ15N values of individual amino acids are nearly uniform within both families of these fishes across five global regions despite great variability in bulk tissue δ15N values. Regional differences in the δ15N values of phenylalanine confirmed that bulk tissue δ15N values reflect region-specific water mass biogeochemistry …

Climate change affects public land ecosystems and services throughout the American West and these effects are projected to intensify Even if greenhouse gas emissions are reduced adaptation strategies for public lands are needed to reduce anthropogenic stressors of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and to help native species and ecosystems survive in an altered environment Historical and contemporary livestock production ' the most widespread and longrunning commercial use of public lands ' can alter vegetation soils hydrology and wildlife species composition and abundances in ways that exacerbate the effects of climate change on these resources Excess abundance of native ungulates eg …

Conference papers
The Irish AEC Sector is facing one of its most uncertain and challenging periods and will see major cuts in all areas of the economy in 2012. Despite this the Irish Government has announced a number of large capital expenditure investments which have resultantly become a lifeline to a struggling construction industry. In order to compete within the public works sector AEC businesses must operate within the Governments Capital Works Management Framework. The objectives of the framework include achieving cost certainty, value for money and more effective delivery and appropriate risk sharing. The framework remains an area of contention and …

Arts And Education: An Investigation Into The Impact Of The Arts Academy On High School Students, Nigel Sangster
Arts And Education: An Investigation Into The Impact Of The Arts Academy On High School Students, Nigel Sangster
Theses and Dissertations
The broad topical area of my research study involved an investigation of the impact of the arts academy on the students of Cooper Ruth Performing and Fine Arts Middle-High School (pseudonym), using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Being a proponent of the arts, one of the premises of my research was to bring about a greater sense of awareness in my school and school district, that the arts were not "frills" in the educational processes of children (Perrin, 1994). Focus was given to various strands of the arts disciplines in my efforts to substantiate the significance of the overarching question …

Technology-Supported Storytelling (Tsst) Strategy In Virtual World For Multicultural Education, Jie Huang, Youngkyun Baek, Jungwon Cho
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Learning culture through stories is an effective way for multicultural education, since stories are one of the most powerful and personal ways that we learn about the world. Storytelling, the process of telling stories, is a form of communication and a universal expression of culture. With the development of technology, storytelling emerges out of diverse ways. This study explores the storytelling in virtual worlds for multicultural education, and devises a Technology-Supported storytelling (TSST) strategy by examining and considering the characteristics of virtual worlds which could be incorporated into the storytelling, and then uses this strategy to teach Korean culture to …

Methods For Teaching Hispanic English Language Learners, Johannah M. Strohman
Senior Honors Theses
With the increase of diversity in American schools and the growing importance of English around the world, teaching English as a second language has become an essential aspect to education. It is difficult to have students of different cultural backgrounds in the classroom who are not proficient in English. A teacher cannot expect these students to succeed in an English only classroom setting. It is important that there be specialized teachers to address the needs of these students in order to reach all students where they are and help them accomplish all that they need to in order to succeed. …

Morphological And Genetic Changes Induced By Excess Zn In Roots Of Medicago Truncatula A17 And A Zn Accumulating Mutant, Ricky W. Lewis, Guiliang Tang, David H. Mcnear
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Nutrient fluxes associated with legume-rhizobia symbioses are poorly understood and little is known regarding the influence of abiotic stresses on development and maintenance of N-fixing nodules and root system architecture (RSA). We examined effects of Zn on nodule development and structure, root architecture, and expression of nodulation-related miRNAs in Medicago truncatula and the mutant, raz (requires additional Zn).
FINDINGS: Excess Zn increased root and shoot associated Zn in both genotypes, however, raz plants had lower root associated Zn than WT plants. Roots of raz plants exposed to excess Zn had less volume, surface area, and total length compared to …

Farm Bill Options, Impacts And Outlook, Bradley D. Lubben, Jim A. Jansen, Matthew C. Stockton
Cornhusker Economics
After the 2012 elections, Congress returned to Washington, D.C. for a lame-duck session to address the “fiscal cliff,” the simultaneous challenge of expiring tax legislation and pending budget sequestration. Somewhere in this lame-duck agenda the farm bill may also find attention, as promised during the campaign season. Finishing a farm bill could produce budget savings that helps solve part of the fiscal cliff challenge. And perhaps more urgently, reauthorizing or at least extending now-expired farm bill legislation would prevent permanent farm bill legislation from 1949 taking effect on January 1.
