Characterization Of Head Transcriptome And Analysis Of Gene Expression Involved In Caste Differentiation And Aggression In Odontotermes Formosanus (Shiraki), Qiuying Huang, Pengdong Sun, Xuguo Zhou, Chaoliang Lei

Entomology Faculty Publications

Background

The subterranean termite Odontotermes formosanus (Shiraki) is a serious insect pest of trees and dams in China. To date, very little is known about genomic or transcriptomic data for caste differentiation and aggression in O. formosanus. Hence, studies on transcriptome and gene expression profiling are helpful to better understand molecular basis underlying caste differentiation and aggressive behavior in O. formosanus.

Methodology and Principal Findings

Using the Illumina sequencing, we obtained more than 57 million sequencing reads derived from the heads of O. formosanus. These reads were assembled into 116,885 unique sequences (mean size = 536 bp). …

Beethoven's Thematic Processes In The Piano Sonata In G Major, Op. 14: "An Illusion Of Simplicity", Kara F. Valliere '14 Nov 2012

Beethoven's Thematic Processes In The Piano Sonata In G Major, Op. 14: "An Illusion Of Simplicity", Kara F. Valliere '14

Music Department Student Scholarship

During the latter part of the Classic Period, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his Piano Sonata in G Major, Op. 14, No. 2, I. It appears as though the composer is merely following the guidelines of a traditional sonata-form movement, creating a remarkable “illusion of simplicity” appropriate for the time. Upon further investigation, however, Beethoven has created a highly complex plan of musical action through his use of key schemes that allows for smooth transitions from theme to theme and from section to section throughout the movement.

Projected Climate Change Impacts On The Hydrology And Temperature Of Pacific Northwest Rivers, Huan Wu, John S. Kimball, Marketa M. Elsner, Nate Mantua, Robert F. Adler, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A dominant river-tracing-based streamflow and temperature (DRTT) model was developed by coupling stream thermal dynamics with a source-sink routing model. The DRTT model was applied using 1/16 degree (similar to 6 km) resolution gridded daily surface meteorology inputs over a similar to 988,000 km(2) Pacific Northwest (PNW) domain to produce regional daily streamflow and temperature simulations from 1996 to 2005. The DRTT results showed favorable performance for simulation of daily stream temperature (mean R-2 = 0.72 and root-mean-square error = 2.35 degrees C) and discharge (mean R-2 = 0.52 and annual relative error 14%) against observations from 12 PNW streams. …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of community-associated and nosocomial infections. Imperative to the success of S. aureus is the ability to adapt and utilize nutrients that are readily available. Genomic sequencing suggests that S. aureus has the genes required for synthesis of all twenty amino acids. However, in vitro experimentation demonstrates that staphylococci have multiple amino acid auxotrophies, including arginine. Although S. aureus possesses the highly conserved anabolic pathway that synthesizes arginine via glutamate, we demonstrate here that inactivation of ccpA facilitates the synthesis of arginine via the urea cycle utilizing proline as a substrate. Mutations within putA, rocD, …

Comparison Of The Coleoptera Communities In Leaf Litter And Rotten Wood In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Usa, Michael L. Ferro, Matthew L. Gimmel, Kyle E. Harms, Christopher E. Carlton Nov 2012

Comparison Of The Coleoptera Communities In Leaf Litter And Rotten Wood In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Usa, Michael L. Ferro, Matthew L. Gimmel, Kyle E. Harms, Christopher E. Carlton

Insecta Mundi

The community within extremely decayed downed coarse woody debris, here referred to as decay class V (CWD5), has never been systematically sampled. The presumption has been that rotten wood is eventually overrun by surrounding soil and litter inhabitants. Leaf litter and CWD5 were sampled for Coleoptera with a sifting/ Berlese technique at three primary and three secondary forest sites in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA, during fall 2006 and spring 2007. A total of 4261 adult beetle specimens, representing 216 lowest identifiable taxa within 159 genera and 28 families, were collected. Sixty-six species (31%) were represented by single …

Natural History Of Four Species Of Platydracus Thomson (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) In Heliconia Bourgaeana Petersen (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) Flower Bracts, J. H. Frank, M. A. Morón Nov 2012

Natural History Of Four Species Of Platydracus Thomson (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) In Heliconia Bourgaeana Petersen (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) Flower Bracts, J. H. Frank, M. A. Morón

Insecta Mundi

Abstract. The insect fauna within inflorescences of Heliconia bourgaeana Petersen (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) was evaluated in Parque Metlac, Fortín de las Flores, Veracruz, Mexico between May and October 1995. Floral bracts were present in May and some persisted to October, despite much destruction in August by a grackle, Quiscalus mexicanus (JF Gmelin) (Icteridae). Flowers were abundant in the bracts in May-June, after which their number declined as fruits matured. Insects that fed on the flowers were most abundant in May-June; several of them could be pollinators; the immature stages of most of these insects were absent from Heliconia Linnaeus. The floral …

Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach's Ohne Liebe: A Translation And Commentary, Steven L. Peris Nov 2012

Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach's Ohne Liebe: A Translation And Commentary, Steven L. Peris

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores a short drama of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Without Love. It provides not only a complete English translation of the work, but also an interpretative introduction. By first examining the life of Ebner-Eschenbach, I am able to provide insight to the origins of the play. Because Ebner-Eschenbach faced so much opposition in her drama writing career this one act play becomes more relevant. It contains similar themes to her other works such as: gender roles, the role of the aristocracy, and love in marriage. Without Love examines the role of love in marriage by providing the reader …

Filtering Techniques For Pose Estimation With Applications To Unmanned Air Vehicles, Bryce Benson Ready Nov 2012

Filtering Techniques For Pose Estimation With Applications To Unmanned Air Vehicles, Bryce Benson Ready

Theses and Dissertations

This work presents two novel methods of estimating the state of a dynamic system in a Kalman Filtering framework. The first is an application specific method for use with systems performing Visual Odometry in a mostly planar scene. Because a Visual Odometry method inherently provides relative information about the pose of a platform, we use this system as part of the time update in a Kalman Filtering framework, and develop a novel way to propagate the uncertainty of the pose through this time update method. Our initial results show that this method is able to reduce localization error significantly with …
