Duties And Job Performance Factors Of Cataloguers In Nigerian Academic Libraries, M.A. Bello, Y. Mansor

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Cataloguing is fundamentally the basis of theory of knowledge where information organisation, the structure and the means for handling them are identified and specified. Cataloguers are the specialists responsible for bibliographic control, information management and the creation of resource discovery tool that aids user in their search for materials. Essentially, they are responsible for the provision and organisation of efficient and effective retrieval system. Thereby saves time, increases the quality/productivity of library users and ultimately enhances the performance of the institution to achieve set objectives. Literatures indicated swift changes in duties, skills and functions of cataloguers. The changes had posed …

New Simulation Framework For Flow Modeling Of Complex Physical System, Denis V. Voskov Nov 2012

New Simulation Framework For Flow Modeling Of Complex Physical System, Denis V. Voskov

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

A novel simulation framework for simulating flow in porous media for mixtures having an arbitrary number of phases will be presented. The behavior of components in any phase is computed using mixed phase equilibrium assumptions. This type of simulation is very important for modeling of natural and industrial processes, such as development of natural hydrocarbon resources, including gas-hydrates, CO2 injection into hydrocarbon reservoirs and saline aquifers, and for modeling of thermal processes. We use a Fully Implicit (FI) time approximation with general extension to the Adaptive Implicit Method (AIM) using flexible algebraic reduction. The framework is built on top of …

Implications To The Traditional Higher Education Model In A Time Of New Economic And Demographic Realities, Phillip Imel Nov 2012

Implications To The Traditional Higher Education Model In A Time Of New Economic And Demographic Realities, Phillip Imel

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the world’s developed countries the tendency is to a decreasing or stagnant, aging population. Traditional higher education has occurred early in life with little retraining in adulthood. The current demographic and economic realities demand a change in the role of traditional higher education as it must be more flexible and portable. Higher education must play a central role in the lifelong learning process as new technologies become available. Changes will occur with or without the approval of the established higher education hierarchy as businesses and governments demand quicker, cheaper, and better delivery methods to the current system. Technology is …

The Russian Village, Urban Infrastructure Issues, And The Vertically Integrated Agriculture Model, Phillip Imel Nov 2012

The Russian Village, Urban Infrastructure Issues, And The Vertically Integrated Agriculture Model, Phillip Imel

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Russia’s population total has been in decline since 1992 and this is most evident in the villages of Russia. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the large farm collectives, many villages’ raison d'être ceased to exist. Today people continue to leave the villages for what they consider to be the better economic promise of the larger cities. There are serious societal and infrastructure issues related to the village exodus to the larger municipalities. In this paper, a vertically integrated agriculture model is examined as one step towards a more vibrant village economy. A vertically integrated model based upon …

A Comparative Case Study Of Service-Learning In Teacher Education: Rethinking Benefits And Challenges Of Partners And Placements, Margaret-Mary Sulentic Dowell, Jaqueline Bach Nov 2012

A Comparative Case Study Of Service-Learning In Teacher Education: Rethinking Benefits And Challenges Of Partners And Placements, Margaret-Mary Sulentic Dowell, Jaqueline Bach

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

In this comparative case study, two teacher educators turned the research lens on their own experiences with service-learning. Positing that teacher education programming can explicitly address pre-service teachers’ assumptions through course-embedded academic service-learning activities, particularly reflection, the advantages and difficulties of various placements and partners were examined. Using a case study design allowed the researchers to share their experiences locating suitable placements and forging sustainable partnerships for their courses. Findings include the importance of considering the utility of non-traditional placements and settings, the value of cultivating long-term partners, and the significance of frequent and ongoing reflection. The authors conclude that …

Cellphone Diaries: Mobile Technology And Self-Authored Digital Videos In Asset Mapping, Kofi Boone Nov 2012

Cellphone Diaries: Mobile Technology And Self-Authored Digital Videos In Asset Mapping, Kofi Boone

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

The Cellphone diaries project engaged African-American residents of historic South Park East Raleigh, North Carolina in the use of “smartphones” to document places that had meaning for them in Chavis Park. Chavis Park is the green heart of their community, and is undergoing rapid change. The project was a component of an effort by NC State University investigators to support a neighborhood revitalization framework organized around a community vision plan. Cellphone diaries attempted to 1) train residents in the use of “smartphone” digital videos for individual on-site asset mapping, and 2) compare the results of individual on-site “smartphone” based approaches …

Responding To The Need For Language Support: Partnership In Primary, Secondary And Tertiary Education, Gail A. Mceachron, Joy Martin Nov 2012

Responding To The Need For Language Support: Partnership In Primary, Secondary And Tertiary Education, Gail A. Mceachron, Joy Martin

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

Abstract

This study explored how school, university, and community partners provided language support to K-12 students whose first language was something other than English. Six English as a second language (ESL) supervisors representing six Virginia school divisions were asked to describe school-university language partnerships. Research questions were: According to ESL supervisors, how do PK-12 public school divisions and institutions of higher education collaborate on behalf of students whose first language is not English? What do ESL supervisors perceive as ways in which current partnerships could be improved and expanded? Tape-recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed along with information available through …
