Mi2Β Is Required For Γ-Globin Gene Silencing: Temporal Assembly Of A Gata-1-Fog-1-Mi2 Repressor Complex In Β-Yac Transgenic Mice, Flávia C. Costa, Halyna Fedosyuk, Allen M. Chazelle, Renee Y. Neades, Kenneth R. Peterson Dec 2012

Mi2Β Is Required For Γ-Globin Gene Silencing: Temporal Assembly Of A Gata-1-Fog-1-Mi2 Repressor Complex In Β-Yac Transgenic Mice, Flávia C. Costa, Halyna Fedosyuk, Allen M. Chazelle, Renee Y. Neades, Kenneth R. Peterson

Faculty and Staff Publications

Activation of γ-globin gene expression in adults is known to be therapeutic for sickle cell disease. Thus, it follows that the converse, alleviation of repression, would be equally effective, since the net result would be the same: an increase in fetal hemoglobin. A GATA-1-FOG-1-Mi2 repressor complex was recently demonstrated to be recruited to the -566 GATA motif of the Aγ-globin gene. We show that Mi2β is essential for γ-globin gene silencing using Mi2β conditional knockout β-YAC transgenic mice. In addition, increased expression of Aγ-globin was detected in adult blood from β-YAC transgenic mice containing a T>G HPFH point mutation …

On The Interpretability Of Law: Lessons From The Decoding Of National Constitutions, James Melton, Zachary Elkins, Tom Ginsburg, Kalev Leetaru Dec 2012

On The Interpretability Of Law: Lessons From The Decoding Of National Constitutions, James Melton, Zachary Elkins, Tom Ginsburg, Kalev Leetaru

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

An implicit element of many theories of constitutional enforcement is the degree to which those subject to constitutional law can agree on what its provisions mean (call this constitutional interpretability). Unfortunately, there is little evidence on baseline levels of constitutional interpretability or the variance therein. This article seeks to fill this gap in the literature, by assessing the effect of contextual, textual and interpreter characteristics on the interpretability of constitutional documents. Constitutions are found to vary in their degree of interpretability. Surprisingly, however, the most important determinants of variance are not contextual (for example, era, language or culture), but textual. …

The Antitrust Analysis Of Multi-Sided Platform Businesses, David S. Evans, Richard Schmalensee Dec 2012

The Antitrust Analysis Of Multi-Sided Platform Businesses, David S. Evans, Richard Schmalensee

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This Chapter provides a survey of the economics literature on multi-sided platforms with particular focus on competition policy issues, including market definition, mergers, monopolization, and coordinated behavior. It provides a survey of the general industrial organization theory of multi-sided platforms and then considers various issues concerning the application of antitrust analysis to multi-sided platform businesses. It shows that it is not possible to know whether standard economic models, often relied on for antitrust analysis, apply to multi-sided platforms without explicitly considering the existence of multiple customer groups with interdependent demand. It summarizes many theoretical and empirical papers that demonstrate that …

Non-Attorney Social Security Disability Representatives And The Unauthorized Practice Of Law, Drew A. Swank Dec 2012

Non-Attorney Social Security Disability Representatives And The Unauthorized Practice Of Law, Drew A. Swank

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The label “non-attorney representative” is an oxymoron.  Attorneys—members of state bars who have specialized training in the law—represent people; laypersons who attempt to do so can be charged in most states with a misdemeanor or felony offense.  And yet before federal administrative agencies, it is a common, everyday occurrence.  This article not only explores why that is, but more importantly examines the consequences for both individuals and our federal administrative justice system.  Focusing on the Social Security Administration, this article examines how the agency has failed to implement the safeguards other agencies have to ensure the competency and ethics of …

Reinvigorating The 1l Curriculum: Sequenced “Writing Across The Curriculum” Assignments As The Foundation For Producing Practice-Ready Law Graduates, Suzanne J. Schmitz, Alice M. Noble-Allgire Dec 2012

Reinvigorating The 1l Curriculum: Sequenced “Writing Across The Curriculum” Assignments As The Foundation For Producing Practice-Ready Law Graduates, Suzanne J. Schmitz, Alice M. Noble-Allgire

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Study after study lists written legal analysis as one of the most critical skills of a lawyer; yet it is often under-developed in the traditional law school curriculum.  This article describes an integrative, sequenced “Writing Across the Curriculum” (WAC) program to help first-year law students master legal analysis and writing by systematically developing these skills though writing assignments in doctrinal courses, thereby enhancing the instruction that students receive in the Lawyering Skills course. The article discusses the key components of the program—writing assignments sequenced to build skills incrementally from simple to complex; prompt and consistent feedback based upon a competency …

A Comprehensive Study Of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, And Comparison, Per Maximilian Gasseholm

Social Sciences

Today complimentary medicine is being increasingly sought out. Ayurveda and TCM, are among the oldest systems of medicine and have been developed for over thousands of years in India and China respectively. This paper details the philosophies, medical theories, anatomy, diagnosis, and treatments of both of these systems, including a comparison. Both of these modalities of healing operate with a microcosm – macrocosm paradigm. This makes them fundamentally similar, and compatible with each other. Ayurveda uses Tridoshic theory to apply treatments ranging from diet, massage, meditation, yoga among other therapies to bring Vata, Pitta, and Kapha into balance. TCM is …

The Creation Of Student-Run Public Relations Firms: A Historical Look At Student-Run Firms, Hannah Hazdovac Dec 2012

The Creation Of Student-Run Public Relations Firms: A Historical Look At Student-Run Firms, Hannah Hazdovac

Journalism

This study explores the history and background of student-run public relations firms on

college campuses and the benefits, if any, that students receive as a result of working

in such a firm. The public relations industry estimated at growing 18 percent between

2006 and 2016 (Todd, 2009). Even with the sudden expansion of the public relations

industry, and subsequently, public relations education, evidence suggests that recent

public relations graduates often times do meet entry-level outcome expectancies of

employers, leaving a need for a change in curriculum (Creedon, Dostal, Gael, Smith &

Walker, 1999). It is becoming increasingly more important to …

Design, Fabrication And Manufacturing Analysis Of A Rollover Protection System, Nikolas Paris Dec 2012

Design, Fabrication And Manufacturing Analysis Of A Rollover Protection System, Nikolas Paris

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This senior project discusses the design, fabrication and manufacturing analysis of a rollover protection system specifically designed for early body style Ford Broncos (1966-1977). The rollover protection system, or roll cage, is an integral safety feature on vehicles which commonly encounter extreme terrain conditions. Many vehicles which attempt to traverse terrain such as this are not always properly equipped with a rollover protection system. This is the case with the early body style Ford Bronco. This system will be designed to market the niche of early bronco parts.

Pervious Pavement Infiltrometer, Madeline Musgrove Dec 2012

Pervious Pavement Infiltrometer, Madeline Musgrove

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This project tests infiltration rates on three different slabs of pervious pavement. A methodology was put in place to ensure that all three slabs were tested the same way. The test that is used for the infiltration rates is a constant head test. A steel ring is placed on the surface of the pervious pavement and sealed with Plumbers Putty around the bottom of the ring. A mark is then sketched on the inside of the ring at 2 inches above the surface of the pavement for a constant backpressure that is equal in all scenarios. Five gallons of water …
