Application Of Wireless Power For Charging The Battery Of A Wireless Mouse, Jacob Keast, Vincent Jison Dec 2012

Application Of Wireless Power For Charging The Battery Of A Wireless Mouse, Jacob Keast, Vincent Jison

Electrical Engineering

Electronic devices are a part of all modern homes, but restricted by available outlets and the hassle of wires. With the modern wireless mouse, this is also the case. When the battery is low the consumer has several options: it is replaced with a new battery, it can be recharged using a USB wire, or the mouse is placed on a charging dock. This project provides an alternative to these options and allows the mouse’s battery to be charged via wireless inductive coupling. The wireless power charging system that was implemented in this project was successful in its ability to …

Radio Link Analysis And Characterization Of Past And Future Cal Poly Cubesats, Brian Gilbert Tubb Dec 2012

Radio Link Analysis And Characterization Of Past And Future Cal Poly Cubesats, Brian Gilbert Tubb

Electrical Engineering

Cal Poly's satellites design team, PolySat, has three satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and four more planned to launch within the next two years. Radio communication of past and current orbiting satellites has been an exercise in frustration, prompting significant research into the satellite-side of the radio link by several other Senior Projects and Thesis papers. However, minimal effort has been spent on evaluating why these problems were discovered only once the satellites reached orbit. This paper details the downfalls of relying heavily on link budgets and improper long range test setups, then experimentally determines the sensitivity of PolySat's …

Analysis And Evaluation Of Existing And Novel Turbulent Dynamic Pressure Based Methods For Measuring Bridge Pier And Abutment Scour, Murray Fisher

All Dissertations

Scour is one of the most significant threats to bridge infrastructure and is the leading cause of failure within the United States. Given this risk to the nation’s transportation infrastructure, it is necessary to understand the development of scour holes around bridge piers and abutments. This can be achieved with scour monitoring, a Federal Highway Administration approved scour countermeasure. As the monitoring techniques available range from simple devices that rest on or in the channel bed to advanced scanning systems that provide a bed contour profile, a concise study of the state of the art in real time scour measurement …

Network Target Coordination For Design Optimization Of Decomposed Systems, Wenshan Wang Dec 2012

Network Target Coordination For Design Optimization Of Decomposed Systems, Wenshan Wang

All Dissertations

A complex engineered system is often decomposed into a number of different subsystems that interact on one another and together produce results not obtainable by the subsystems alone. Effective coordination of the interdependencies shared among these subsystems is critical to fulfill the stakeholder expectations and technical requirements of the original system. The past research has shown that various coordination methods obtain different solution accuracies and exhibit different computational efficiencies when solving a decomposed system. Addressing these coordination decisions may lead to improved complex system design. This dissertation studies coordination methods through two types of decomposition structures, hierarchical, and nonhierarchical.

The Satanic Nature Of Racist “Christianity”, Susan Peppers-Bates Dec 2012

The Satanic Nature Of Racist “Christianity”, Susan Peppers-Bates

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this paper, Dr. Peppers‐Bates ponders the persistence of individual and institutional racism among modern‐day Christians by applying the anthropological‐psychological lens of the scholar René Girard and his concepts of mimesis and the scapegoating mechanism. The message of the Gospel is incompatible with violence and hatred, yet those who embrace racial stereotyping, even as they call themselves ‘Christians’, are deaf to it.

Building Interreligious Encounter/Dialogue Through Friendship In A Pluralistic World: The Nigerian Context, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai Dec 2012

Building Interreligious Encounter/Dialogue Through Friendship In A Pluralistic World: The Nigerian Context, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this essay, Dr. Aihiokhai explores the philosophical concept of friendship as a model for fostering interreligious dialog across the Christian, Muslim, and the Ihiebve Traditional religions in Nigeria, based on qualitative research conducted between 2011 and 2012, and also on first‐hand experiences. By using alterity as grounds for communication and by worshiping openly and collaboratively, we can begin to appreciate not only the ‘other’, but also ourselves.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of The Orientation Of A Pediatric Left Ventricle Assist Device Cannula To Reduce Stroke Events, Stephen Guimond Dec 2012

Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of The Orientation Of A Pediatric Left Ventricle Assist Device Cannula To Reduce Stroke Events, Stephen Guimond

HIM 1990-2015

Ventricle Assist Devices (VADs), which are typically either axial or centrifugal flow pumps implanted on the aortic arch, have been used to support patients who are awaiting cardiac transplantation. Success of the apparatus in the short term has led to long term use. Despite anticoagulation measures, blood clots (thrombi) have been known to form in the device itself or inside of the heart. The Ventricle Assist Devices supply blood flow via a conduit (cannula) implanted on the ascending aorta. Currently, the implantation angle of the VAD cannula is not taken into consideration. Since the VADs supply a significant amount of …

Imitating Individualized Facial Expressions In A Human-Like Avatar Through A Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization - Tabu Search Algorithm, Evan Husk Dec 2012

Imitating Individualized Facial Expressions In A Human-Like Avatar Through A Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization - Tabu Search Algorithm, Evan Husk

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis describes a machine learning method for automatically imitating a particular person's facial expressions in a human-like avatar through a hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization - Tabu Search algorithm. The muscular structures of the facial expressions are measured by Ekman and Friesen's Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Using a neutral face as a reference, the minute movements of the Action Units, used in FACS, are automatically tracked and mapped onto the avatar using a hybrid method. The hybrid algorithm is composed of Kennedy and Eberhart's Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO) and Glover's Tabu Search (TS). Distinguishable features portrayed on the …

Knowledge-Based Exploration For Reinforcement Learning In Self-Organizing Neural Networks, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan Dec 2012

Knowledge-Based Exploration For Reinforcement Learning In Self-Organizing Neural Networks, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Exploration is necessary during reinforcement learning to discover new solutions in a given problem space. Most reinforcement learning systems, however, adopt a simple strategy, by randomly selecting an action among all the available actions. This paper proposes a novel exploration strategy, known as Knowledge-based Exploration, for guiding the exploration of a family of self-organizing neural networks in reinforcement learning. Specifically, exploration is directed towards unexplored and favorable action choices while steering away from those negative action choices that are likely to fail. This is achieved by using the learned knowledge of the agent to identify prior action choices leading to …

A course on ”Female Role-Models in Health Care Professions” used narrative approaches to foster students' self understanding and professional affiliation. This paper: (1) introduces these innovative teaching methods; (2) reports on students' learning experiences; and (3) discusses the implications of these teaching experiences. Materials and Methods: …

Effect Of Iron Chelators On Methemoglobin And Thrombin Preconditioning., Jing Chen-Roetling, Jesse Sinanan, Raymond F. Regan Dec 2012

Effect Of Iron Chelators On Methemoglobin And Thrombin Preconditioning., Jing Chen-Roetling, Jesse Sinanan, Raymond F. Regan

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Cell loss immediately adjacent to an intracerebral hemorrhage may be mediated in part by the toxicities of extracellular hemoglobin (Hb) and thrombin. However, at low concentrations, these proteins induce tolerance to hemin and iron that may limit further peri-hematomal injury as erythrocyte lysis progresses. The mechanisms mediating these preconditioning effects have not been completely defined, but increased expression of both heme oxygenase (HO)-1 and iron binding proteins likely contributes. In the present study, we hypothesized that iron chelator therapy would attenuate this protective response. Pretreatment of cortical glial cultures (> 90 % GFAP+) with 3 μM methemoglobin (metHb) or 5 …

Coder Reliability And Misclassification In The Human Coding Of Party Manifestos, Slava Mikhaylov, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit Dec 2012

Coder Reliability And Misclassification In The Human Coding Of Party Manifestos, Slava Mikhaylov, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Comparative Manifesto Project (CMP) provides the only time series of estimated party policy positions in political science and has been extensively used in a wide variety of applications. Recent work (e.g., Benoit, Laver, and Mikhaylov 2009; Klingemann et al. 2006) focuses on nonsystematic sources of error in these estimates that arise from the text generation process. Our concern here, by contrast, is with error that arises during the text coding process since nearly all manifestos are coded only once by a single coder. First, we discuss reliability and misclassification in the context of hand-coded content analysis methods. Second, we …

Determining Temperatures Of Deformation In Mylonites From The Scandinavian Caledonides, With Implications For The Thermal And Kinematic Evolution Of Orogens, Andrea Marilina Wolfowicz Dec 2012

Determining Temperatures Of Deformation In Mylonites From The Scandinavian Caledonides, With Implications For The Thermal And Kinematic Evolution Of Orogens, Andrea Marilina Wolfowicz

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The Titanium-in-quartz (TitaniQ) thermobarometer was evaluated in ductilely sheared rocks (mylonites) from the Scandinavian Caledonides in comparison with several other thermometric methods, including: (1) TitaniQ thermometry in cross-cutting quartz veins, (2) garnet-biotite Fe-Mg exchange thermometry, (3) metamorphic phase equilibria, and (4) quartz microstructures as calibrated experimentally and empirically. In all instances, quartz vein temperatures mimic TitaniQ temperatures of the host rocks. Similarly, TitaniQ temperatures of dynamically recrystallized quartz, ranging from ~210°C at the thrust front to 475°C at the deepest structural levels, reflect the best estimate of the final temperature of deformation. Higher temperatures are also preserved locally and more …
