Procuring And Tracing Produce From Small- And Medium- Scale Farmers For Use In Institutional Foodservice Operations In Nc, Sc And Ga, Anita Nunnelley

All Theses

In response to concerns about an increasingly globalized food system in the United States, and increasing interest in the connections between small- and medium-scale (SMS) farms and institutional foodservice operations (IFO), the U.S. has recently developed legislation to link farmers to institutional markets (Joshi, Azuma, & Feenstra, 2008; Poulton, Dorward, & Kydd, 2010; USDA, 2010; Wootan, 2012). The purpose of this study is to determine if these connections are viable, sustainable and ultimately if the food is safe for consumption in the IFO. There are significant logistical, contractual and food safety concerns when sourcing food for IFOs from SMS farms. …

The Feasibility Of A Fresh Fruit And Vegetable Processor In Saluda County, South Carolina, Sarah Macdonald Dec 2012

The Feasibility Of A Fresh Fruit And Vegetable Processor In Saluda County, South Carolina, Sarah Macdonald

All Theses

ABSTRACT
This research looks at the topic of agriculture and agricultural processing as a means for rural economic development. The purpose of the study is to determine the feasibility and desirability of a fruit and vegetable processor in Saluda County, South Carolina. A fruit and vegetable co-packer was chosen because of positive community response to the idea, large and growing fruit and vegetable production in the county, lack of fruit and vegetable processing in the county and growing demand for fresh cut and frozen produce. The proposed processor would produce sliced, frozen, bagged peaches during peach season and cut, frozen, …

Durability Of Reinforced Concrete Incorporating Crushed Waste Brick As Coarse Aggregate, Matthew Adamson Dec 2012

Durability Of Reinforced Concrete Incorporating Crushed Waste Brick As Coarse Aggregate, Matthew Adamson

All Theses

Using crushed bricks as aggregates in concrete is of particular interest to preserve natural aggregate sources as well as to reduce waste, as it has been estimated that 10% to 30% of all waste in landfills in the united States comes from construction and demolition wastes. By recycling some of these wastes, the sustainability of a project can be improved. However, it is important concrete incorporating these wastes is as durable or more durable then conventional concrete, or will it have a shorter service life. Durability of concrete is its ability to resist deterioration from its external environment such as …

Through A Glass, Darkly: The Changing Past Of Coffee County, Georgia, Jonathan Hepworth Dec 2012

Through A Glass, Darkly: The Changing Past Of Coffee County, Georgia, Jonathan Hepworth

All Theses

In 1954, Coffee County, Georgia, commemorated its centennial with a massive celebration that essentially shut down the county seat of Douglas for a week. Parades, fireworks, speeches, and above all a large-scale historical pageant, the 'Centurama,' were components of the celebration. The history celebrated in 1954, however, did not necessarily match up with Coffee County's actual history. This thesis examines the history of Coffee County and its changing nature, looking at politics, economics, and culture. It finds that historical 'memory' is not always planned out by society's elites, but can change as the result of politics, demographic shifts, and commercial …

Ancient Traditions And Personal Mythology: An Immortal Connection To Wilderness, James Brantley Dec 2012

Ancient Traditions And Personal Mythology: An Immortal Connection To Wilderness, James Brantley

All Theses

My personal experiences with nature lead me to have a very primal relationship with wildlife and landscape. These experiences elicit primal internal responses of fear and wonderment. They peak my imagination in a way that nothing else does. To effectively visualize this, I create prints and sculpture that present my personal mythology and symbols.
The use of mythology has historical precedence. The use of myth helps us make sense of the aspects of life that are ethereal, intangible and difficult to understand. To visualize my experiences in nature, I create network of personal mythology and symbolism based on personal experiences, …

Visions & Fissures, Sarah Butler Dec 2012

Visions & Fissures, Sarah Butler

All Theses

My work references both Early Renaissance paintings and digital technology through highly-saturated and detailed hybrids of painting styles. The religious narratives combined with digital symbols and artifacts of digital processes suggest the spiritual undercurrents surrounding digital technology in its potential for enlightenment, transcendence, and evoking a sense of the infinite. To further clarify the reasoning behind this connection, I discuss three themes. Firstly, the function of illusion in Early Renaissance and in digital space, secondly, the mythology and promise associated with digital space and lastly, the fact that we currently occupy two spaces simultaneously as computer users, and aligning that …

Stress-Lifetime Joint Distribution Model For Performance Degradation Failure, Quan Sun, Yanzhen Tang, Jing Feng, Paul Kvam Dec 2012

Stress-Lifetime Joint Distribution Model For Performance Degradation Failure, Quan Sun, Yanzhen Tang, Jing Feng, Paul Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

The high energy density self-healing metallized film pulse capacitor has been applied to all kinds of laser facilities for their power conditioning systems under several stress levels, such as 23kV, 30kV and 35kV, whose reliability performance and maintenance costs are affected by the reliability of capacitors. Due to the costs and time restriction, how to assess the reliability of highly reliable capacitors under a certain stress level as soon as possible becomes a challenge. Accelerated degradation test provides a way to predict its lifetime and reliability effectively. A model called stress-lifetime joint distribution model and an analysis method based on …

Sediment Based Turbidity And Bacteria Reduction Analysis In Simulated Construction Site Runoff, James W. Berry Iii Dec 2012

Sediment Based Turbidity And Bacteria Reduction Analysis In Simulated Construction Site Runoff, James W. Berry Iii

All Theses

Large construction projects are highly vulnerable to sediment removal by erosive forces. Turbidity, resulting from this excess sediment, has gained recognition as anindicator of pollution in surface runoff from construction activities. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently moving toward regulations that would establish a nationwide maximum turbidity effluent limit discharged from construction sites. Research has shown that current sediment control best management practices (BMPs) are often ineffective at controlling elevated turbidity levels in construction site discharges. Additionally, research confirms that sediment basins may act as reservoirs for bacteria, specifically Escherichia coli (E. coli). During rainfall events, resuspension within sediment …

Presented at ACC Mid-Atlantic conference in Washington DC.

INTRODUCTION/HYPOTHESIS

•Adverse cardiac remodeling and fibrosis provide an arrhythmic substrate for atrial fibrillation (AF), but the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) as a biomarker is not well understood. MMPs are zinc-dependent endopeptidases known to degrade substrates such as elastin, gelatin and collagen.

•In excised human atrial tissue, MMP 2 and 9 levels rise as the AF burden increases from sinus rhythm (“No AF”) to non-permanent AF (“Non-Prm AF”) to permanent AF (“PrmAF”). Higher plasma levels of MMPs are also associated with recurrent AF after cardioversion.

•This study sought to elucidate 1) the …

B-Cell Epitope Prediction Through A Graph Model, Liang Zhao, Limsoon Wong, Lanyuan Lu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Jinyan Li Dec 2012

B-Cell Epitope Prediction Through A Graph Model, Liang Zhao, Limsoon Wong, Lanyuan Lu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Jinyan Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Prediction of B-cell epitopes from antigens is useful to understand the immune basis of antibody-antigen recognition, and is helpful in vaccine design and drug development. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to this long-studied problem, however, existing methods have at least two common limitations. One is that they only favor prediction of those epitopes with protrusive conformations, but show poor performance in dealing with planar epitopes. The other limit is that they predict all of the antigenic residues of an antigen as belonging to one single epitope even when multiple non-overlapping epitopes of an antigen exist.

Comment: Emerging Epa Regulation Of Pharmaceuticals In The Environment, Gabriel Eckstein Dec 2012

Comment: Emerging Epa Regulation Of Pharmaceuticals In The Environment, Gabriel Eckstein

Faculty Scholarship

The May 25, 2012, report — entitled EPA Inaction in Identifying Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals May Result in Unsafe Disposal — disapproved of EPA’s lack of progress in determining whether certain pharmaceuticals found in surface, ground, and drinking water qualify as hazardous waste, as well as in establishing an evaluation and regulatory process for pharmaceutical wastes. As a result of the report, EPA is now considering mechanisms for assessing and regulating the presence of certain pharmaceutical products in the environment as hazardous wastes under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

Electric Field-Induced Tetragonal To Orthorhombic Phase Transitions In [110]C-Oriented Batio₃ Single Crystals, D. J. Franzbach, Yijia Gu, Long-Qing Chen, K. G. Webber Dec 2012

Electric Field-Induced Tetragonal To Orthorhombic Phase Transitions In [110]C-Oriented Batio₃ Single Crystals, D. J. Franzbach, Yijia Gu, Long-Qing Chen, K. G. Webber

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electric field-induced phase transitions in [110]c-oriented BaTiO3 single crystals were studied by macroscopic electrical measurements in the temperature range from 20 °C to 50 °C. Discontinuous, hysteretic jumps in the polarization and strain were observed, indicating a tetragonal ↔ orthorhombic phase transition. The critical electric field to induce the transition was found to shift to higher values with increasing temperature. The Landau-Devonshire theory was used to analyze the observed electric field-induced T ↔ O phase transitions.

Acoustic Scale From The Angular Power Spectra Of Sdss-Iii Dr8 Photometric Luminous Galaxies, Hee-Jong Seo, Shirley Ho, Martin White, Antonio J. Cuesta, Ashley J. Ross, Shun Saito, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We measure the acoustic scale from the angular power spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) Data Release 8 imaging catalog that includes 872, 921 galaxies over ~10,000 deg2 between 0.45 < z < 0.65. The extensive spectroscopic training set of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey luminous galaxies allows precise estimates of the true redshift distributions of galaxies in our imaging catalog. Utilizing the redshift distribution information, we build templates and fit to the power spectra of the data, which are measured in our companion paper, to derive the location of Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) while marginalizing over many free parameters to exclude nearly all of the non-BAO signal. We derive the ratio of the angular diameter distance to the sound horizon scale DA(z)/rs = 9.212+0.416-0.404 at z = 0.54, and therefore DA (z) = 1411 ± 65 Mpc at z = 0.54; the result is fairly independent of assumptions on the underlying cosmology. Our measurement of angular diameter distance DA(z) is 1.4σ higher than what is expected for the concordance ΛCDM, in accordance to the trend of other spectroscopic BAO measurements for …

Inspection of the tongue is a key component in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Chinese medical practitioners diagnose the health status of a patient based on observation of the color, shape, and texture characteristics of the tongue. The condition of the tongue can objectively reflect the presence of certain diseases and aid in the differentiation of syndromes, prognosis of disease and establishment of treatment methods. Tongue shape is a very important feature in tongue diagnosis. A different tongue shape other than ellipse could indicate presence of certain pathologies. In this paper, we propose a novel set of features, based on shape geometry …

A Cross Layer Approach To The Novel Distributed Scheduling Protocol And Event-Triggered Controller Design For Cyber Physical Systems, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan Dec 2012

A Cross Layer Approach To The Novel Distributed Scheduling Protocol And Event-Triggered Controller Design For Cyber Physical Systems, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), multiple real-time dynamic systems are connected to their corresponding controllers through a shared communication network in contrast with a dedicated line. for such CPS, the existing scheduling schemes for instance Centralized or Distributed Scheduling schemes are unsuitable since the behavior of real-time dynamic systems is ignored during the network protocol design. Therefore, in this paper, a novel distributed scheduling protocol design via cross-layer approach is proposed to optimize the performance of CPS by maximizing the utility function which is generated by using the information collected from both the application and network layers. Subsequently, a novel …

Tdma For Wireless Passive Backscatter Networks: An Information Theoretic Approach, Aditya V. Padaki, Maciej Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The passive backscatter technology is increasingly employed in wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. in contrast to existing technologies, it offers several advantages including a battery-less operation, extremely small-form factor, and low costs. Our previous works demonstrated that theoretically such backscatter-Based network outperforms existing solutions. in contrast, this paper presents a new time division multiple access (TDMA) based approach that considers a practical realization of the multi-hop framework. the capacity limits for the proposed scheme are evaluated for two frameworks - (a) single hop with direct backscatter signal and (b) a multi-hop transmission. an analytical comparison shows that the multi-hop transmission …

A Low Complexity Algorithm For Linear Precoder Design With Finite Alphabet Inputs, Mingxi Wang, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao, Weiliang Zeng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A low complexity precoding method is proposed for practical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. based on the two-step optimal precoder design algorithm that maximizes the lower bound of the mutual information with finite-alphabet inputs, the proposed method simplifies the precoder design by fixing the right singular vectors of the precoder matrix to be the modulation diversity matrix, eliminating the iterative optimization between the two steps, and discretizing the search space of the power allocation vector. the modulation diversity matrices are designed for different modulations, which outperform the existing maximum diversity for BPSK and 8PSK inputs. for a 4x4 channel, the computational …

Linear Mimo Precoding In Multi-Antenna Wiretap Channels For Finite-Alphabet Data, Yongpeng Wu, Chengshan Xiao, Zhi Ding, Xiqi Gao, Shi Jin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we investigate the secrecy rate of finite alphabet communications over multiple-input, multiple-output, multiple-antenna eavesdropper (MIMOME) systems. Traditional precoder designs at the transmitter for achieving secrecy capacity (maximum secrecy rate) for MIMOME systems are developed according to the assumption of Gaussian input signals. Such designs may risk substantial secrecy rate loss when Gaussian inputs are replaced by practical finite alphabet inputs. to address this issue, we propose a linear precoding design to directly maximize the secrecy rate for MIMOME systems under the constraint of finite alphabet input. Exploiting convex optimization and matrix calculus, we present necessary conditions required …

Linear Precoding Of Finite Alphabet Signals In Multi-Antenna Broadcast Channels, Yongpeng Wu, Mingxi Wang, Chengshan Xiao, Zhi Ding, Xiqi Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the design of linear transmit precoding for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BC) with finite alphabet input signals. We derive an explicit expression for the achievable rate region of the MIMO BC with discrete constellation inputs, which is generally applicable to cases involving arbitrary user number and arbitrary antenna configurations. for the case where all the users employ the same modulation scheme, we further present a weighted sum rate upper-bound of the MIMO BC with identical transmit precoding matrices. the resulting bound demonstrates a serious performance loss due to multi-user interference for MIMO BC with finite alphabet inputs …

Electromagnetic Emissions From The Ic Packaging, Nick K.H. Huang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Huichun Yu, Gang Li, Shuai Xu, Tao Wang, Huasheng Ren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The EMC and EMI of the IC packaging are becoming increasingly important to modern electronics. Its EMC, SI, and PI have been broadly attested. But electromagnetic radiations from IC packaging and the corresponding EMI were seldom studied. In this paper, the fundamental principles and properties of the electromagnetic radiations caused by vias and traces in IC packagings are carefully investigated. Various radiation mechanisms are analyzed for different representative scenarios. Numerical simulations are employed to support the analyzing results. © 2012 IEEE.

Fundamental Components Of The Ic Packaging Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Analysis, Nick K.H. Huang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Huichun Yu, Gang Li, Shuai Xu, Huasheng Ren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The IC packaging EMC/SI/PI problems have been broadly attested. But IC packaging EMI was seldom addressed. Because the EMI emission by IC packagings is increasingly significant, in this paper, EMI behaviors are systematically studied. To fundamentally understand the radiation mechanism, radiated contributions from ground lids, vias, and traces of the packaging are investigated and modeled separately. It is seen that the packaging EMI has clearly low frequency and high frequency behaviors. The low frequency behavior is due to the Hertzian dipole effects of vias. The high frequency behavior is due to the radiation of excited cavity modes. Both theoretical analysis …

Skin-Effect Model For Round Wires In Peec, Albert E. Ruehli, Giulio Antonini, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we consider the skin-and radiation effects for a thin wire segment. Circuit models are being constructed which are suitable for the modeling of thin wires like the wire bonds. We use the internal-external inductance model for this purpose of including the skin-effect in the partial inductance. These models make it possible to include thin, round conductors in a PEEC model at a much lower cost in compute time. The ultimate goal is to construct a circuit model which can be applied both in the time and frequency domain to signal and power integrity problems. © 2012 IEEE.

On Love In The Realm Of Science, Vuk Uskoković Dec 2012

On Love In The Realm Of Science, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

In the first half of 2009 I organized a series of talks at University of California, San Francisco. The series was dedicated to observing science from a wider perspective and figuring out where its trains and we as scientists in it are heading to. The final presentation in the series I envisaged as the one drawing threads between love and science. However, my aim was neither for that particular talk to be the one of explaining sensations of love using scientific language nor to be based on pastoral and pathetic eruptions of love about science. What I had in mind …
