Experiments take place in a physical environment but also a social environment. Generalizability from experimental manipulations to more typical contexts may be limited by violations of ecological validity with respect to either the physical or the social environment. A replication and extension of a recent study (a blood glucose manipulation) was conducted to investigate the effects of experimental demand (a social artifact) on participant behaviors judging the geographical slant of a large-scale outdoor hill. Three different assessments of experimental demand indicate that even when the physical environment is naturalistic, and the goal of the main experimental manipulation was primarily concealed, …

Early-Life Influences On Body Composition, Metabolic Economy, And Age At Menarche, Megan A. Workman Dec 2012

Early-Life Influences On Body Composition, Metabolic Economy, And Age At Menarche, Megan A. Workman

Anthropology ETDs

Prenatal energy balance and postnatal psychosocial experiences have been linked by separate literatures to maturational timing, adult body composition (e.g., height, skeletal muscle mass), and life-long differences in metabolic physiology. This dissertation examines the potential influences of prenatal energy balance and postnatal psychosocial experiences in simultaneous analyses designed to test whether they exert additive or interacting influences on adult body composition (chapters 2 and 4), metabolic physiology (chapter 3), and age at menarche (chapter 4) among samples of U.S. men and women. Evolutionary models that address human developmental plasticity are explored as possible explanations for the observed relationships.

The 2008 Us Presidential Election And New Digital Technologies: Political Campaigns As Social Movements And The Significance Of Collective Identity, Stephanie Takaragawa, Victoria Carty

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

The growing role of the Internet social networking sites (SNS) has served as a flash point for debate about the democratization of information, particularly in light of their perceived roles in the 2008 presidential election. This horizontal sharing of information undoubtedly facilitated the revival of the youth vote and volunteerism in many ways mimicking traditional grassroots approaches. While the role of the Internet SNS in mobilization efforts and information-sharing cannot be overstated, its effectiveness in creating a new “public sphere,” or transforming traditional electoral campaign strategies and communicative practices must be closely examined before generalizations about the democratization of media …

The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of certain types of activities on long-term retention of vocabulary. In this dissertation the literature in the field of vocabulary retention is reviewed. Unlike to the vast majority of research …

Design And Simulation Of Single-Electron Molecular Devices, Nikita Simonian Dec 2012

Design And Simulation Of Single-Electron Molecular Devices, Nikita Simonian

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This work presents a study of molecular single-electron devices that may be used as the basic building blocks in high-density resistive memories and hybrid CMOS/nanoelectronic integrated circuits. It was focused on the design and simulation of a molecular two-terminal nonvolatile resistive switch based on a system of two linear, parallel, electrostatically-coupled molecules: one implementing a single electron transistor and another serving as a single-electron trap. To verify the design, a theoretical analysis of this "memristive" device has been carried out, based on a combination of ab-initio calculations of the electronic structures of the molecules, Bardeen's approximation for the rate of …

Identification Of Functional Glycosylation Of Adamtsl2, Andrew Taibi Dec 2012

Identification Of Functional Glycosylation Of Adamtsl2, Andrew Taibi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

ADAMTSL2 has been shown to play a role in regulation of Transforming Growth Factor β (TGFβ) signaling through binding Latent TGFβ Binding Protein 1 (LTBP1) and Fibrillin 1 (FBN1) in the extracellular matrix. A genetic screen revealed mutations to Adamtsl2 cause a rare growth disorder called Geleophysic Dysplasia (GD). Multiple GD mutations fall within ADAMTSL2's seven Thrombospondin Type 1 Repeats (TSRs). TSRs often undergo a form of glycosylation called O-fucosylation. The addition of a fucose sugar to TSRs has been shown to be a necessary process in the secretion of related proteins. Among several mutations to ADAMTSL2 within TSRs which …

The intent of this thesis is to illustrate the unique abilities of the historical novels La novela de Per??n and Santa Evita written by Tom? s Eloy Mart?Ánez, in drawing significant conclusions about the personas, personalities and lives of Argentina's most controversial leaders of the 20th century, Juan Domingo Per??n and Eva Duarte Per??n, as well as conclusions on the events, circumstances and peoples incorporating and surrounding their governance of Argentina. It is the assertion of this thesis that historical fiction or what contemporary critics call historiographic metafiction has the ability to investigate the underlying realities of past events and …

Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound: Countermeasure For Microgravity-Induced Bone Loss, Sardar Muhammad Zia Uddin Dec 2012

Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound: Countermeasure For Microgravity-Induced Bone Loss, Sardar Muhammad Zia Uddin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Microgravity (MG) during space flight is known to have adverse effect on bone quality and quantity. Data collected from studies conducted on astronauts show a loss of 1-1.6% bone mineral density (BMD) per month of space-flight. This decreased BMD has been recorded in the load-bearing region of the legs and spine. The reduction in bone quality can be due to decreased osteoblast and/or increased osteoclast activity when exposed to microgravity. During space-flights, rigorous exercise has been used to reduce to bone loss due to microgravity, but thus far it has proven inadequate to produce significant results. Some studies have considered …

Empathy And Belief In Documentary Theatre: A Cognitive Perspective On Mike Daisey's The Agony And The Ecstasy Of Steve Jobs, Kristin Vieira

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the spring of 2012, celebrated monologuist Mike Daisey was accused of embellishing the truth and misleading fact checkers on the Public Radio International program This American Life. Daisey had performed an excerpt of his theatrical monologue The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs on This American Life in January of 2012. Three months later, This American Life aired a retraction episode, claiming that Daisey had lied about many of his eyewitness experiences. Following the retraction, a heated debate ensued about the blurring of lines between entertainment and journalism and about the implied contract between documentary theatre artists and …

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson At D0 In The Μ + Τ (Hadrons) + 2 Jets Final State, Wanyu Ye Dec 2012

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson At D0 In The Μ + Τ (Hadrons) + 2 Jets Final State, Wanyu Ye

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Standard Model has been a successful theory in various aspects. It predicted and led to discovery of many new particles, including the Higgs boson recently found, the last missing piece of the Standard Model. The Higgs mechanism allows the vector bosons and fermions to be massive via the electroweak symmetry breaking. This thesis presents the search of the Standard Model Higgs through the decay products: one muon, one hadronically decaying tau, and two or more jets using the full 9.7 fb^(-1) of Tevatron collider RunII data set collected in the D0 detector at Fermilab. The main production channels are …

Design, Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Curcumin Analogues As Inhibitors Of Matrix Metalloproteinases And Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines, Yu Zhang Dec 2012

Design, Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Curcumin Analogues As Inhibitors Of Matrix Metalloproteinases And Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines, Yu Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There are two principal reasons why we age: 1) the toxicity of oxygen species; 2) the continuous degradation of collagen by groups of enzymes such as the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The MMPs are a group of more than 25 structurally zinc-containing enzymes that are involved in the degradation of numerous extracellular, pericellular and non-matrix proteins. In many disease conditions their levels and proteinase activity rise, producing pathological and serious structural damage. Tetracyclines (TCs) are known inhibitors of mammalian-derived MMPs, and non-antibiotic formulations of doxycycline are FDA-approved to treat periodontitis and the chronic inflammatory skin disease, rosacea. However, a significant limitation …

Bordello, Barbara Lynn Bellman Dec 2012

Bordello, Barbara Lynn Bellman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The 1920s was a time of great social challenge in terms of immigration, unemployment, white slavery and political corruption. From the late 1800s to the 1930s, an Orthodox Jewish mafia (known as the Zwi Migdal) trafficked in white slavery on three continents. This organization owned over 3000 brothels in Buenos Aires alone - mostly populated by the ignorant Jewish girls whose parents had been deceived that their daughters were going to Argentina for respectable jobs and/or marriage. In researching the context of the times, I discovered a rich historical backdrop and chose the format of a dramatic musical to tell …

Mitigation Of Bone Loss And Augment Of Anabolic Adaptation By Physiological Dynamic Fluid Flow Stimulation, Minyi Hu Dec 2012

Mitigation Of Bone Loss And Augment Of Anabolic Adaptation By Physiological Dynamic Fluid Flow Stimulation, Minyi Hu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Novel modalities with strong translational potential to prevent osteoporosis are urgently called for, as osteoporosis strikes the society with high incidences of disease-related fractures and excessive medical costs. While bone fluid flow (BFF) regulates bone adaptation, intramedullary pressure (ImP) can initiate BFF and influence osteogenic signals. To establish the translational potential, a non-invasive intervention with direct ImP-coupled BFF can help develop new non-pharmaceutical treatments for osteopenia/osteoporosis. The overall objective of this dissertation was to investigate the effects of a novel, non-invasive dynamic hydraulic stimulation (DHS) on skeletal regulatory responses at the tissue, cellular, and molecular levels. The global hypothesis was …

Some Results On One-Dimensional Models With Broken And Deformed Symmetries, Francis Norman Claridades Paraan Dec 2012

Some Results On One-Dimensional Models With Broken And Deformed Symmetries, Francis Norman Claridades Paraan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

We present analytic results for the ground state properties and entanglement in the Lieb-Liniger model and q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) models. The translational invariance of the Lieb-Liniger model is broken by an external harmonic potential in one case and by coarse-grained measurements of particle number in another. Meanwhile, anisotropy is introduced into the AKLT model by generalizing its SU(2) invariant hamiltonian into one that is SUq(2) invariant. The Lieb-Liniger model describes a one-dimensional gas of bosons that mutually interact by a zero-range interaction term. Under longitudinal harmonic confinement, the exact spectrum of the hamiltonian is known only for free …

Using Type Inference And Abstract Interpretation For Static Binary Analysis, Alireza Saberi Dec 2012

Using Type Inference And Abstract Interpretation For Static Binary Analysis, Alireza Saberi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In recent years, many research efforts have been dedicated to detect vulnerabilities in software. Most of these techniques are based on source code analysis. However, source code-based analysis methods are ineffective when the program source code is not available. In such a case, binary analysis is the only option. Yet, all binary analysis methods have to address serious challenges such as indirect memory access, missing functions and data abstraction. Historically, these problems have been addressed using rather ad hoc techniques. However, recent research has begun to reverse this trend. In this thesis, we cover Value-Set Analysis (VSA) and Abstract Stack …

Ph.D, Mi Jin Son

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Membrane lipid species are not identically distributed in the inner and outer leaflet of biological membranes. This metastable asymmetric distribution of lipids is called `lipid asymmetry', and it is an important feature of many biological membranes. Investigation of various aspects of lipid asymmetry has been limited by a lack of robust methods to prepare stable artificial asymmetric vesicles. We recently developed a method in which methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MβCD)-induced lipid exchange is used to prepare model membrane vesicles with lipid asymmetry and which, like eukaryotic plasma membranes, have an outer leaflet rich in sphingomyelin (SM) and have an inner leaflet rich in …

Evolution Of The Cardiac Electrophysiological System And Regulation Of Ion Channel Gene Expression, Qinghong Yan Dec 2012

Evolution Of The Cardiac Electrophysiological System And Regulation Of Ion Channel Gene Expression, Qinghong Yan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There are two basic ways by which biological systems can evolve, either by changes in the sequence of protein coding regions (structural evolution) or by changes in gene regulatory function (regulatory evolution). The relative importance of regulatory versus structural evolution for the evolution of different biological systems is a subject of controversy. The primacy of regulatory evolution in the diversification of morphological traits has been promoted by many evolutionary developmental biologists. For physiological traits, however, the role of regulatory evolution has received less attention or has been considered to be relatively unimportant. To address this issue for electrophysiological systems, I …

Planktonic Microbial Community Structure In Great South Bay, Ny, Where Aureococcus Anophagefferens Blooms Frequently Occur, Yuan Liu Dec 2012

Planktonic Microbial Community Structure In Great South Bay, Ny, Where Aureococcus Anophagefferens Blooms Frequently Occur, Yuan Liu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The eukaryotic and prokaryotic planktonic microbial communities in Great South Bay (GSB), NY, were characterized using Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (TRFLP) for both 18S rDNA and 16S rDNA in 2008 when there was an Aureococcus anophagefferens &lsquobrown tide&rsquo bloom and in 2009 when there was no bloom. TRFLP data and A. anophagefferens cell counts using microscopy demonstrated both a spring and a fall bloom in 2008. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling analysis of TRFLP profiles from samples collected along a ten station transect in the middle GSB from May to October (2008) and May to December (2009) revealed that while plankton …

Creating Light Music At The Festival Of Song: Politics, Personhood, And Cultural Production In Tirana, Albania (1944-Present), Nicholas Tochka Dec 2012

Creating Light Music At The Festival Of Song: Politics, Personhood, And Cultural Production In Tirana, Albania (1944-Present), Nicholas Tochka

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Though different orders organize subjects in audibly distinguishable ways, only rarely have ethnomusicologists theorized how musical practice articulates to practices of government. Through a diachronic case study of Tirana, Albania, this dissertation interrogates how the production of popular music has supported the production of popular consent to illiberal regimes both socialist (1944-1992) and capitalist (1992-present). While previous ethnomusicological and musicological studies of eastern bloc musical practice have focused (respectively) on professionalized folk music and concert music, my research examines the composition, performance, and reception of the popular genre "light music" (Alb. muzik?_ e leht?_) at an annual song competition the …

Videopoetry: Collaboration As Imaginative Method, Peter Lutze, James Armstrong, Laura Woodworth-Ney

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Three Idaho professors (a poet, videographer, and historian) have been collaborating for eight years on a cross-disciplinary project called VideoPoetry, which integrates historical narration, narrative poetry, historical photographs, and videography into the video medium. To this point we've worked primarily on a specific program, Culture of Reclamation, which explores the culture of the early irrigated landscape communities in southern Idaho. In reflecting on our work-process, we’ve discovered that we’ve fundamentally changed as scholars as a result of our collaboration. This paper identifies the nature of our changes and documents instances of the ways in which we have been challenged to …

Individual Factors And Successful Learning In A Hybrid Course, Kelly Arispe, Robert J. Blake Dec 2012

Individual Factors And Successful Learning In A Hybrid Course, Kelly Arispe, Robert J. Blake

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

What personality factors make for a successful hybrid L2 learning experience? While previous studies have examined online learning in comparative terms (i.e. Which format is better: in class or hybrid?), this study examines certain personality and cognitive factors that might define the ideal hybrid language learner. All informants studied introductory Spanish with multimedia materials supported by synchronous chat (video, voice, text). Personality and cognitive traits were probed using the Big Five Inventory scale (BFI1) and the Shipley Institute of Living scale (SILS2), respectively. The results were correlated with course outcomes and learner preferences for online, chat, …
