Planning Public Transport Networks—The Neglected Influence Of Topography, Rhonda Daniels, Corinne Mulley Dec 2012

Planning Public Transport Networks—The Neglected Influence Of Topography, Rhonda Daniels, Corinne Mulley

Journal of Public Transportation

The principles of public transport network planning include coverage, frequency, legibility and directness. But trade-offs are made in implementing these principles, reflecting the economic, institutional, temporal, and natural environments in which public transport is planned, funded, and operated. Analysis of the case study of Sydney, Australia, shows how implementing network planning principles is influenced by the natural environment. The neglected influence of topography on public transport network planning can be improved through understanding of the impact of topography on planning, expansion, operations, and public transport use; measuring the nature of the walk access in providing coverage; ensuring planning guidelines recognize …

The Effect Of Proximity To Urban Rail On Housing Prices In Ottawa, Christopher M. Hewitt, W. E. (Ted) Hewitt Dec 2012

The Effect Of Proximity To Urban Rail On Housing Prices In Ottawa, Christopher M. Hewitt, W. E. (Ted) Hewitt

Journal of Public Transportation

Increasingly, urban rail transit (URT) is seen as a desirable solution for transportation challenges faced by both urban planners and residents of suburban areas alike. The availability and ease of access to URT, in turn, may result in distortions in local real estate markets. The conventional wisdom, in fact, suggests that construction of urban rail lines serves as a magnet for new housing development and, in turn, can lead to increases in property values in proximity to URT stations. Existing studies have, in good measure, confirmed this belief, but largely on the basis of global area studies that can often …

Cost Estimation Of Fare-Free Ada Complementary Paratransit Service In Illinois, Paul Metaxatos, Lise Dirks Dec 2012

Cost Estimation Of Fare-Free Ada Complementary Paratransit Service In Illinois, Paul Metaxatos, Lise Dirks

Journal of Public Transportation

Instituting a free fare for ADA complementary paratransit service in the state of Illinois will expectedly increase the demand and associated costs of providing the specialized service. This paper proposes a method to estimate such demand and cost increases. Our results show an estimated average increase in annual ADA trips between 121 and 171 percent in the Chicago area. Given previous industry free-ride experiments, the latent demand exhibited by the large number of persons with disabilities living within ¾ mile of a fixed route, and the expected diversion of wheelchair riders currently using fixed routes, we believe it is not …

PURPOSE: To determine bioactivity and duration of effect of intravitreal aflibercept injection (also known as vascular endothelial growth factor Trap-Eye) for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

METHODS: In this double-masked, phase 1 study, 28 patients with lesions ≤12 disc areas, ≥50% active choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≤20/40 were randomized 1:1 to a single intravitreal injection of aflibercept 0.15 or 4 mg. The primary end point was the change from baseline in central retinal/lesion thickness (CR/LT) at week-8. Secondary outcomes were the change from baseline BCVA, the change in CNV lesion size and area of leakage, …

A Combinatorial Solution For Scheduling Spatial Multiplexing In Mimo-Based Ad Hoc Networks, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye Dec 2012

A Combinatorial Solution For Scheduling Spatial Multiplexing In Mimo-Based Ad Hoc Networks, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a MIMO-Based ad hoc network, the conflict relation between transmissions is fundamentally changed due to the multiple packet reception capability of MIMO nodes. a MIMO node can receive from multiple data streams at the same time, which significantly increases data throughput. to fully utilize the additional spectrum capacity enabled by the MIMO technology, it is important that transmissions from different nodes are coordinated. the coordination scheme needs to consider both data stream multiplexing and transmission time scheduling for a maximum performance gain. in this paper, we use an optimization framework to jointly consider MIMO link spatial multiplexing and scheduling …

Three Point Encryption (3pe): Secure Communications In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy Cabaniss, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Madria Dec 2012

Three Point Encryption (3pe): Secure Communications In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy Cabaniss, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are a subset of Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) composed of several mobile devices. These dynamic environments make conventional security algorithms unreliable, nodes that are far apart may not have access to the other's public key, making secure message exchange difficult. Other security methods rely on requesting the key from a trusted third party, which can be unavailable in DTN. the purpose of this paper is to introduce two message security algorithms capable of delivering messages securely against either eavesdropping or manipulation. the first algorithm, Chaining, uses multiple midpoints to re-encrypt the message for the destination …

Explosively Formed Projectile Soft-Recovery Force Analysis, Laurin Bookout, Phillip R. Mulligan, Jason Baird

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The design of a soft-recovery system is critical to a researcher's ability to analyze hypervelocity projectiles. The researcher may decide to use one method over another based on several criteria, including whether or not non-deformed projectile measurements are required. This report analyzes the forces two different soft-recovery methods impart on the projectiles collected. Method 1 utilized three polyethylene water barrels placed “end-to-end” horizontally, providing 2.6 meters (9 feet) of water to stop the projectile. Method 2 is a modification of the soft-recovery method utilized in “Soft-Recovery of Explosively Formed Penetrators” by Lambert and Pope. This method utilizes a series of …

Immunoproteomics: The Key To Discovery Of New Vaccine Antigens Against Bacterial Respiratory Infections, Ruth Dennehy, Siobhan Mcclean Dec 2012

Immunoproteomics: The Key To Discovery Of New Vaccine Antigens Against Bacterial Respiratory Infections, Ruth Dennehy, Siobhan Mcclean

Articles

The increase in antibiotic resistance and the shortage of new antimicrobials to prevent difficult bacterial infections underlines the importance of prophylactic therapies to prevent infection by bacterial pathogens. Vaccination has reduced the incidence of many serious diseases, including respiratory bacterial infections. However, there are many pathogens for which no vaccine is available and some vaccines are not effective among all age groups or among immunocompromised individuals. Immunoproteomics is a powerful technique which has been used to identify potential vaccine candidates to protect against pathogenic bacteria. The combination of proteomics with the detection of immunoreactive antigens using serum highlights immunogenic proteins …

Auditimi Dhe Llojet E Tij, Mehdi Bytyqi

Theses and Dissertations

Who Owes How Much? Developments In Apportionment And Joint And Several Liability Under O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33, Thomas A. Eaton

Mercer Law Review

For most of its history, Georgia followed the traditional common law rule of joint and several liability and the equally well-settled principle that negligence could not be compared with intent when apportioning liability. Both of those propositions were dramatically altered by the enactment of the 2005 amendments to the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.) section 51-12-33 as construed by the Georgia Supreme Court in two recent opinions. In McReynolds v. Krebs, the court held that pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33(b): (1) damages must be apportioned among persons who are liable according to percentages of fault of each person …

Evidence, John E. Hall Jr., W. Scott Henwood, Alex Battey

Mercer Law Review

This year represents the last survey period in which the "old" Georgia Evidence Code, Official Code of Georgia Annotated title 24, reigns. The "new" Georgia Evidence Code, which amends the O.C.G.A. and conforms in large part to the Federal Rules of Evidence, takes effect January 1, 2013. Therefore, next year's survey will undoubtedly report the ways in which Georgia courts have coped with the extensive changes. For now, courts continue to apply the existing Georgia Rules of Evidence. Cases covered in this Article were published between June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012, and speak to a variety of topics …

Insurance, Bradley S. Wolff, Stephen Schatz, Stephen L. Cotter

Mercer Law Review

In property insurance cases, there were two Georgia Supreme Court decisions with the potential for significant impact. The court held that insurance companies are liable for diminution in value of real property under commercial and homeowners insurance policies, extending the reasoning in State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. v. Mabry beyond motor vehicles for the first time. Answering a certified question, the supreme court also held a one-year suit limitation in a homeowners insurance policy is enforceable for losses not caused by fire, despite an insurance commissioner-issued regulation that would prohibit any limitation shorter than, two years.

Despite an insurer's …

Real Property, Linda S. Finley Dec 2012

Real Property, Linda S. Finley

Given continued economic issues, it is tempting to turn any survey of Georgia real property law into a report solely about foreclosure law. The survey period of this Article-from June 1, 2011, through May 31, 2012-saw continued dire economic times for Georgia and the entire United States. As this Article was going to print, RealtyTrac, which reports national foreclosure statistics, released its mid-year 2012 foreclosure report showing that foreclosure activity had again increased in 125 of the nation's 212 metropolitan areas. Of the metropolitan areas making up the top ten on the foreclosure report, only Atlanta registered an increase in …
