Smart Ladies Sit Still: Women, Modernism And Photography, Lauren M. Rosenblum Dec 2012

Smart Ladies Sit Still: Women, Modernism And Photography, Lauren M. Rosenblum

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines the relationship between modern women writers and photography. Modernism was long understood as being opposed to mass culture and mediums of mass production, but this project argues that the movement was in fact dependent upon women's engagement with mass cultural forms, like photographs and the magazines that presented the images. I argue that modern women writers thematically and stylistically integrated photography to critique a complicated and evolving visual culture, one in which a woman's mechanically copied appearance became an increasingly vital means for her to express her subjectivity. Modeling Guidance And Recognition In Categorical Search: Bridging Human And Computer Object Detection, Yifan Peng Dec 2012

Modeling Guidance And Recognition In Categorical Search: Bridging Human And Computer Object Detection, Yifan Peng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Although various object detection methods have been widely studied, state-of-the-art performance of object detectors still lag far behind human performance. Humans can perform object detection tasks on various object categories hundreds of times a day in an effortless manner. The main effort in computer vision community is aiming at improving the performance of object detectors, while on the other side only little research has been done on understanding how humans perform in the object detection process. In this thesis, we analyze the relationship between human behaviors and object detection methods in computer vision on both guidance and recognition task. In …

Runtime Verification Of Kernel-Level Concurrency Using Compiler-Based Instrumentation, Justin Seyster Dec 2012

Runtime Verification Of Kernel-Level Concurrency Using Compiler-Based Instrumentation, Justin Seyster

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

To approach the challenge of exploiting the performance potential of multi-core architectures, researchers and developers need systems that provide a reliable multi-threaded environment: every component of the underlying systems software must be designed for concurrent execution. But concurrency errors are difficult to diagnose with traditional debugging tools and, as not all schedules trigger them, can slip past even thorough testing. Runtime verification is a powerful technique for finding concurrency errors. Existing runtime verification tools can check potent concurrency properties, like atomicity, but have not been applied at the operating system level. This work explores runtime verification in the systems space, …

Building Distributed Data Models In A Performance-Optimized, Goal-Oriented Optimization Framework For Cyber-Physical Systems, Varun Subramanian

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are large, distributed embedded systems that integrate sensing processing, networking and actuation. Developing CPS applications is currently challenging due to the sheer complexity of the related functionality as well as the broad set of constraints and unknowns that must be tackled during operation. Building accurate data representations that model the behavior of the physical environment by establishing important data correlations and capturing physical laws of the monitored entities is critical for dependable decision making under performance and resource constraints. The goal of this thesis is to produce reliable data models starting from raw sensor data under tight …

Novel Carbon Nanomaterial Coating For Dispersibility, Delivery And Sensing, Magdalena Swierczewska Dec 2012

Novel Carbon Nanomaterial Coating For Dispersibility, Delivery And Sensing, Magdalena Swierczewska

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Carbon nanomaterials have been cited to provide great potential in biomedical applications such as in vivo imaging, drug delivery, and biomarker detection. Yet poor dispersibility in physiological conditions greatly limits their biomedical promise. As with most nanoparticles, the surface interaction with biological systems is the driving force towards effective activity in vivo, namely exhibiting dispersion, low cytotoxicity, and molecular targetability. Therefore, by surface engineering carbon nanomaterials with a distinct biocompatible coating, their applications in imaging, drug delivery, biomarker detection, and therapy can be empowered. We render carbon nanomaterials useful for such in vivo biomedical applications by providing dispersibility, delivery and …

Efficient Reconstruction And Visualization Of Ct Data, Ziyi Zheng Dec 2012

Efficient Reconstruction And Visualization Of Ct Data, Ziyi Zheng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Cone-beam CT (Computed Tomography) has become a major imaging technique thanks to its image-fidelity and scanning time. Scientists and practitioners frequently utilize volume visualization tools for diagnosis and decision-making. The thesis work presented here seeks to improve on the volume visualization pipeline for CT generated data. We summarize our contributions into three categories. Cone-beam CT scanners typically use analytical algorithms to reconstruct volumetric data. We studied the interpolation error of visualization tools and built a verifiable visualization tool and efficient data structure to enable users to enjoy interactive rendering speed to freely examine the high resolution data at minimal error. …

Role Of Fluid Shear Modulation On Bone Cell Metabolism During High-Frequency Oscillatory Vibrations, Gunes Uzer Dec 2012

Role Of Fluid Shear Modulation On Bone Cell Metabolism During High-Frequency Oscillatory Vibrations, Gunes Uzer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Human, animal and cell studies indicate that the application of vibrations can be anabolic and/or anti-catabolic to bone. Dynamic oscillations create a complex mechanical environment which generates forces not only through accelerations but also through fluid forces. The specific mechanical signal which cells respond has not been identified, in-part because the generated fluid shear is coupled with the magnitude of the applied acceleration in most in vivo and in vitro studies. Looking at how these two mechanical parameters previously proposed to drive the cellular response to vibration - fluid shear and accelerations, act together is critical for understanding their effects …

The Roles Of The L4-22k And L4-33k Proteins During Adenovirus Infection, Kai Wu Dec 2012

The Roles Of The L4-22k And L4-33k Proteins During Adenovirus Infection, Kai Wu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Adenoviruses are a common cause of upper respiratory tract infection, conjunctivitis, and gastroenteritis. Fortunately, most of these infections are self-limiting and rarely cause severe or lethal diseases. Based on its characteristics of safety, easy manipulation and production, adenovirus has been widely used as a gene therapy vector in preclinical settings. Despite the intensive study of adenovirus in the past four decades, the mechanism for viral genome packaging is not fully understood. My dissertation focuses on two viral late gene products, L4-22K and L4-33K, to explore their functions during adenovirus infection, with an emphasis on their roles in viral genome packaging. …

Novel Polymer Thin Film Process Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As An Environmentally Green Solvent, Peter Gin Dec 2012

Novel Polymer Thin Film Process Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As An Environmentally Green Solvent, Peter Gin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The utilization of supercritical fluids (SCFs) has recently become prominent in a number of polymer processes such as inducing the ordering of block copolymer templates, synthesizing nanoporous material, and spatially distributing nanoparticles in a matrix. For such processes, conventional techniques have relied heavily on the use of toxic organic solvents such as chloroform and toluene. In contrast, certain SCFs, such as supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), have been distinguished as a "green" alternative because they are nontoxic, nonflammable, and inexpensive. Furthermore, the easily attainable critical temperature and pressure (Tc=31.3 ??C and Pc=7.38 MPa, respectively) make it an ideal solvent choice for …

Developing An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Management Of The Gulf Menhaden Fishery Using Ecopath With Ecosim, Tess Misak Geers Dec 2012

Developing An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Management Of The Gulf Menhaden Fishery Using Ecopath With Ecosim, Tess Misak Geers

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is a valuable ecosystem both socially and economically, and fisheries contribute substantially to this value. Gulf menhaden, Brevoortia patronus, support the largest fishery in the Gulf (by weight) and provide forage for marine mammals, seabirds and commercially and recreationally important fish species. Understanding the complex interactions among multiple fisheries and myriad unfished species requires tools different from those used in traditional single-species management. Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) is increasingly being used to construct food web models of aquatic ecosystems and to evaluate fisheries management options within a broader, ecosystem context. An EwE model was developed …

Interneuron Subgroups Identified In The Mouse Visual Cortex, Jessica Helm Dec 2012

Interneuron Subgroups Identified In The Mouse Visual Cortex, Jessica Helm

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As information flows through a cortical circuit, layers 2/3 provide an important area for signal processing and integration, and inhibitory interneurons are crucial to this function. Diversification of inhibitory interneurons provides the means for diversification of function. Inhibitory interneurons have been classified based on morphology, electrophysiology, and molecular markers, and each classification provides additional insight into how an interneuron type could shape information flow in the cortical circuit. Parvalbumin (PV) and somatostatin (SOM) are markers for two of the most common, distinct, and well-characterized groups of inhibitory interneurons in the cortex. Studies in the somatosensory cortex have divided SOM interneurons …

Postmetaphysical Reason And Postsecular Consciousness: Habermas' Analysis Of Religion In The Public Sphere, Javier Aguirre Dec 2012

Postmetaphysical Reason And Postsecular Consciousness: Habermas' Analysis Of Religion In The Public Sphere, Javier Aguirre

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation is an exegetical, reconstructive and critical project on J??rgen Habermas' recent account of the role of religion in the public sphere. It is an exegetical dissertation insofar as it interprets Habermas' account as presented in his article Religion in the Public Sphere. It is reconstructive since it develops an analysis of Habermas' previous works as well as his new thoughts related to the key concepts involved in his argument. Finally, it is critical because it offers as well, based on the previous exegesis and reconstruction, a critical perspective of some of the weakness and deficiencies of Habermas?? account. …

Searches For Beyond The Standard Model Tau Jet At The Proposed Eic Detector, Raghav Kunnawalkam Elayavalli Dec 2012

Searches For Beyond The Standard Model Tau Jet At The Proposed Eic Detector, Raghav Kunnawalkam Elayavalli

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

One of the measurements proposed at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) detector is the search for lepton flavor violation. This is a Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) process in which the electron and the quark from the proton form an intermediate boson called the Leptoquark (LQ) which in turn decays into another lepton and quark. In the case of the final lepton being a τ, we are faced with a situation in which we have an electron transforming into a τ, violating lepton flavor conservation in the process. The EIC Detector, if designed appropriately, could have the ability to check if …

A Spline-Based Volumetric Data Modeling Framework And Its Applications, Bo Li Dec 2012

A Spline-Based Volumetric Data Modeling Framework And Its Applications, Bo Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The rapid advances in 3D scanning and acquisition techniques have given rise to the explosive increase of volumetric digital models in recent years. This dissertation systematically trailblazes a novel volumetric modeling framework to represent 3D solids. The need to explore more efficient and robust 3D modeling framework has gained the prominence. The traditional surface representation (e.g. | triangle mesh) is incapable of expressing the interior space and materials. Such a serious drawback overshadows many potential modeling and analysis applications. Consequently, it is desirable to explore one efficient 3D volumetric data modeling framework to suffice above great potential of paradigm shift …

The Impact Of Dna Transposable Elements On Allelic Diversity In Maize, Jong-Jin Han Dec 2012

The Impact Of Dna Transposable Elements On Allelic Diversity In Maize, Jong-Jin Han

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Transposable elements (TE) are indispensible to understand the evolution of genes and genomes in almost all organisms. DNA transposable elements, class 2 elements, have become a source of material for coordination of eukaryotic gene regulatory systems and for chromosomal reconstruction. In particular, mobility of DNA transposons has been used for insertional mutagenesis to generate new alleles in plants and animals. The well-known MuDR/Mu system in maize has been adopted for saturation mutagenesis and allowed for the production of myriads of novel mutant alleles in the Maize-Targeted-Mutagenesis (MTM) collection. However, the potential value of this collection has not been properly realized …

Bag Of Feature Graphs: A New Method For Non-Rigid 3d Shape Retrieval, Xiaohua Hou Dec 2012

Bag Of Feature Graphs: A New Method For Non-Rigid 3d Shape Retrieval, Xiaohua Hou

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis presents a new paradigm for non-rigid 3D shape retrieval, which is also called Bag of Feature Graphs (BoFG). The main idea is to connect only the features on the shape to construct the graphs so that the number of points involved in the computation is greatly reduced. Given a vocabulary of geometric words, the BoFG approach generates a graph that preserves the spatial information among features for each word. The spatial information is weighted by its similarities to each word so that points unlike the word category are eliminated. And the graphs are captured by the affinity matrices …

Superman, Matthew Miranda Dec 2012

Superman, Matthew Miranda

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis addresses the treatment of knowledge and the absence of knowledge in " Superman," a collection of his short stories where apocalyptic flares illume against the backdrops of everyday miracles. In " Superman," seemingly oppositional terms and concepts are presented as variable parts of a greater context that embraces the inversion of correspondent harmony flowing to disorienting dissonance; it also embraces simulations, where perplexity takes on the guise of clarity. | 125 pages

Feature-Based Binding And Phase Theory, Andrei Antonenko Dec 2012

Feature-Based Binding And Phase Theory, Andrei Antonenko

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Current theories of binding cannot provide a uniform account for many facts associated with the distribution of anaphors, such as long-distance binding effects and the subject-orientation of monomorphemic anaphors. Further, traditional binding theory is incompatible with minimalist assumptions. In this dissertation I propose an analysis of anaphoric binding based on a feature-checking mechanism (Pesetsky & Torrego 2007), by introducing the feature rho, a formalization of the reflexivity proposal of Reinhart and Reuland 1993. I argue that the rho feature is responsible for establishing coreference between an anaphor and its antecedent, by being present and valued on reflexives while being unvalued …

Expression And Functional Significance Of Maguks On Cortical Interneurons, Gulcan Akgul Dec 2012

Expression And Functional Significance Of Maguks On Cortical Interneurons, Gulcan Akgul

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

GABAergic inhibitory interneurons, which constitute twenty percent of the entire neuron population, are crucial to the function of brain. They have several subgroups with distinct morphological, biochemical and most importantly physiological properties. Parvalbumin (PV) and Somatostatin (SOM) expressing inhibitory interneurons represent two major subgroups of interneurons in the cortex as well as most other brain regions. Their activity is driven by the excitatory input they receive from pyramidal neurons. SAP97 is a scaffolding protein at the postsynaptic density of the excitatory synapses. It has important functional roles in trafficking and clustering of various types of ion channels and therefore is …

A Stochastic Segmentation Model For Joint Dna-Rna Microarray Data Analysis, Yi Su Dec 2012

A Stochastic Segmentation Model For Joint Dna-Rna Microarray Data Analysis, Yi Su

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

DNA copy number change and epigenetic alteration often induce abnormal RNA expression level and have been linked to the development and progression of cancer. While various methods have been proposed for studying microarray DNA copy number and RNA expression data respectively, little statistical work has been done in modeling the relationship between the two. We propose for the joint analysis of the two types of data a new stochastic change-point model with latent variables, and an associated estimation procedure. Our method integrates hidden Markov model with Bayesian statistics to yield joint posterior distribution of DNA and RNA signal intensities throughout …

The Influence Of Market Proximity On National Forest Hazardous Fuels Treatments, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Susan Charnley, Cassandra Moseley Dec 2012

The Influence Of Market Proximity On National Forest Hazardous Fuels Treatments, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Susan Charnley, Cassandra Moseley

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The US Department of Agriculture Forest Service's focus on hazardous fuels reduction has increased since the adoption of the National Fire Plan in 2001. However, appropriations for hazardous fuels reduction still lag behind wildfire suppression spending. Offsetting fuels treatment costs through biomass utilization or by using innovative administrative mechanisms such as stewardship contracting are two approaches to stretching appropriated dollars further across the landscape. We use fuels treatment data (n = 8,451 locations) to ask how wood- processing infrastructure influences where and how much hazardous fuels treatments, biomass utilization, and stewardship contracting occur on national forests in Oregon and Washington. …

Gathering And Interpreting Components Of Diverse International Courts To Create A New Judicial Framework: A Case Study Of The Icty, Scsl, And Ist, Alexander Licznerski

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

When contemplating the issue of law, I like to compare any legal court to a musical orchestra. There are many similarities to a successful court and a successful orchestra. Yes, music and law might be two different matters, but their appeals and measures are one in the same. Music will tend to remind us of our past, our memories. We feel emotions to the patterns of the music, we understand that there is some meaning to the artist's work. This is the psychological appeal in which we, the audience, come into contact with. We know that many classical artists such …

Alternatives To Standard Minimum Parking Requirements: A Study Of Best Practices And Its Application To Dallas, Texas, Sarah Rachel May, Andrew Whittemore Dec 2012

Alternatives To Standard Minimum Parking Requirements: A Study Of Best Practices And Its Application To Dallas, Texas, Sarah Rachel May, Andrew Whittemore

Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive

Development in Dallas would be more compact and multi-modal if the city refocuses its parking policies away from parking quantity to parking quality. To validate this hypothesis, this professional report compares and contrasts parking policies and best practices of municipalities that have adopted alternatives to standard minimum parking requirements to draw suggestions to present to the City of Dallas. Current parking policy in Dallas has a simple minimum parking requirement (MPR) based on the size and type of use, calculated by recommended industry standards circa 1950 and adjusted through the mid 1980's as automobile ownership has increased. This has made …

Learning From Los Ramblas, Matthew Crowley Dec 2012

Learning From Los Ramblas, Matthew Crowley

Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive

This report seeks to create a catalog of urban design elements that can be used as a professional reference for practicing planners. It will use the Ramblas, a series of streets in Barcelona as the area of study to understand how urban design elements can be successful. The historical evolution of the streets and how they developed into what they are today is presented. It is not suggested that the Ramblas would be recreated in another context but instead elements would be understood for their value and use within their context. Those elements will be catalogued to create a set …
