A distinctive physical property of bulk water is its rich solid-state phase behavior, which includes 15 crystalline (ice I–ice XIV) and at least 3 glassy forms ofwater, namely, low-density amorphous, highdensity amorphous, and very-high-density amorphous (VHDA). Nanoscale confinement adds a new physical variable that can result in a wealth of new quasi-2D phases of ice and amorphous ice. Previous computer simulations have revealed that when water is confined between two flat hydrophobic plates about 7–9 Å apart, numerous bilayer (BL) ices (or polymorphs) can arise [e.g., BL-hexagonal ice (BL-ice I)]. Suppressing Leakage By Localized Doping In Si Nanotransistor Channels, Jesse Maassen, Hong Guo

By first principles atomistic analysis we demonstrate how controlled localized doping distributions in nanoscale Si transistors can suppress leakage currents. We consider dopants (B and P atoms) to be randomly confined to a approximate to 1 nmwidth doping region in the channel. If this region is located away from the electrodes, roughly 20% of the channel length L, the tunneling leakage is reduced 2x compared to the case of uniform doping and shows little variation. Oppositely, we find the leakage current increases by orders of magnitude and may result in large device variability. We calculate the maximum and minimum conductance …

The Constitutional Debate: Herodotus’ Exploration Of Good Government, C. Sydnor Roy

Herodotus’ Constitutional Debate is an important contribution to the development of political thought, since Herodotus provides in it definitions of the three forms of government, democracy, oligarchy, and monarchy. Yet the narrative context of the debate, as well as the Histories entire, often undermines these descriptions. In this article, I attempt to show how Herodotus focuses much more on the pragmatic goals of government—accountability, good decision-making, and stability—than on pure constitutional forms, and such a pragmatic focus suggests that Herodotus may be an early proponent of a ‘mixed’ constitution.

Establishing if species contractions were the result of natural phenomena or human induced landscape changes is essential for managing natural populations. Fishers (Martes pennanti) in California occur in two geographically and genetically isolated populations in the northwestern mountains and southern Sierra Nevada. Their isolation is hypothesized to have resulted from a decline in abundance and distribution associated with European settlement in the 1800s. However, there is little evidence to establish that fisher occupied the area between the two extant populations at that time. We analyzed 10 microsatelliteloci from 275 contemporary and 21 historical fisher samples (1880-1920) to evaluate the demographic …

Rising costs for library materials and shrinking budgets make it more necessary than ever for academic libraries to target their scarce resources to meet the specific needs of academic programs. The authors surveyed other institutions to determine current practices in the allocation of library materials funds in different formats. The results of our survey were inconclusive, which led us to combine monographs and continuations in a single allocation formula. By crafting an allocation formula for both monographs and continuations in print and electronic format, the Cunningham Memorial Library at Indiana State University hopes to satisfy the growing demand for information …

A process of extracting procyanidins by alkaline hydrolysis is described. In particular, a procyanidin-containing material, pomace or residue is treated with an alkali, such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, for a predetermined amount of time and at a predetermined temperature to release procyanidins bound to polysaccharides and/or proteins of the cell wall or depolymerize polymeric procyanidins. After the procyanidins are released by alkaline hydrolysis, the extracts are acidified to obtain a pH level where the procyanidins do not degrade. Systems and methods are disclosed for non-invasively measuring blood glucose levels in a biological sample based on spectral data. A variety of techniques are disclosed for improving signal-to-noise ratio in the acquisition of spectral data and calculating attenuance of light attributable to blood in a sample. Disclosed techniques include (1) using a standard deviation operation in conjunction with the logarithm function, (2) using a normalization factor, (3) using a ratio factor, (4) accounting for the effect of temperature on various system components such as resistors, and (5) accounting for dark current in a light detector by performing a calibration.

The invention provides a composition comprising a plurality of nanoceria particles, a sufficient amount of at least one inhibitor of human carbonic anhydrase II associated with said plurality of nanoceria particles, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier containing said plurality of nanoceria particles with associated inhibitor. One preferred inhibitor of human carbonic anhydrase II comprises 4-carboxybenzene sulfonamide. The disclosed composition is useful in treatment of glaucoma.
