Licht Und Schatten: Die Sicht In Ausgewählten Werken Anna Seghers, Gina Filo Dec 2012

Licht Und Schatten: Die Sicht In Ausgewählten Werken Anna Seghers, Gina Filo

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

Anna Seghers was a German short story writer whose writings dealt with her socialist political sympathies and the Second World War. Frequently, her various stories emphasize vision: who has the ability to see and who does not; the significance of events taking place in darkness rather than in light. This paper discusses Seghers’ uses of light and darkness in two short stories from different periods in her writing career, Aufstand der Fischer von St Barbara and Ausflug der toten Mädchen to emphasize the importance of clarity of vision to understand the world in which we live.

"I Smooth'd Him Up With Fair Words": Intersocietal Law, From Fur Trade To Treaty, Janna Beth Promislow

PhD Dissertations

History is an essential part of aboriginal law. The two disciplines, however, may produce incompatible narratives of indigenous-settler relations. In addition, indigenous legal traditions and the fur trade in the old North West have been under-represented in Canadian legal history, a gap that demotes over two centuries of working relationships to a brief preface to the numbered treaties and confederation. This dissertation seeks to bring under-observed normative relations between indigenous and European traders into Canadian legal history. It further considers the relevance of fur trade law to the jurisprudence on aboriginal treaty rights and the significance of history in overcoming …

Portland State University, Hatfield School of Government (PSU), and Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA), has formed a partnership to develop Sustainable Municipal Operations Plans that documents sustainability and energy management best practices. The goal of this partnership is to determine how a City/municipality can actively manage energy as a controllable expense by following a predetermined operation protocol. The PSU team developed a framework of best practices for sustainable municipal operations in different categories including facilities, fleet, purchasing, operations and the work environment. After identifying pilot jurisdictions, the team applied these best practices to the current operations of local governments in …

Trümmerliteratur: Einheit In Den Ruinen, Jared Jones Dec 2012

Trümmerliteratur: Einheit In Den Ruinen, Jared Jones

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

In the periodisation of German literature, the designation Trümmerliteratur has sometimes been assigned to literature produced in the years 1945–1950. This chronological practice is problematic because it overlooks the network of overlapping qualities that unite the works of Trümmerliteratur as a genre; these works are linked by their distinctively post-war plots, their shared stylistic characteristics, and their common narrative themes. Wolfgang Borchert, Günter Eich, and Heinrich Böll, among others, were products of the specific time and place of their development, and the stories they produced reveal specific experiences of life in the ruins. Their apocalyptic expressions of oblivion, loss, trauma, …

Influencing Factors On The Dynamic Properties Of Organobentonites, Bate Bate, Susan Burns Dec 2012

Influencing Factors On The Dynamic Properties Of Organobentonites, Bate Bate, Susan Burns

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamic responses of soils are important engineering properties, especially for soils with high organic contents, because these soils can underlie critical support structures such as highway bridges or levees. Consequently, the initial tangent shear modulus (Gmax), secant shear modulus ratio (G/Gmax), and damping ratio (D) are important parameters in evaluating the dynamic soil behavior for soils subjected to earthquake, wind, waves, traffic, and equipment vibration. in this study, these dynamic properties of organ bentonites were quantified experimentally using resonant column tests. the results from this study were evaluated in terms of the effect of shear strain, organic content, and …

Designing Tools For Studying The Dynamic Glycome, John F. Rakus

Chemistry Faculty Research

Glycosylation involves the post-translational addition of carbohydrates to protein molecules and is an intricate and indispensable biochemical process. Study of this complicated network of interactions is hindered by the lack of a coding template analogous to the genetic code, and by the vast structural complexity inherent to carbohydrate polymers. We use lectins (non-enzymatic carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immunological origin) as microarray probes to identify carbohydrate features expressed on cellular surfaces. Specifically, we utilized lectin microarray technology to investigate the differences in carbohydrates expressed by the cell lines of the Nation Cancer Institute’s NCI-60 panel. Our investigation identified tissue-specific expression differences in …

Grand Canyon As A Universally Accessible Virtual Field Trip For Intro Geoscience Classes Using Geo-Referenced Mobile Game Technology, Natalie Bursztyn, Joel Pederson, Brett E. Shelton

Graduate Student Posters

There is a well-documented and nationally reported trend of declining interest, poor preparedness, and lack of diversity within U.S. students pursuing geoscience and other STEM disciplines. We suggest that a primary contributing factor to this problem is that introductory geoscience courses simply fail to inspire (i.e. they are boring). Our experience leads us to believe that the hands-on, contextualized learning of field excursions are often the most impactful component of lower division geoscience classes. However, field trips are becoming increasingly more difficult to run due to logistics and liability, high-enrollments, decreasing financial and administrative support, and exclusivity of the physically …

Mississippi Kids Count: Financial Literacy Education In Mississippi, Terrance Garrett, Mark Holden

Delta Directions: Publications

This report concerns child financial literacy education in Mississippi. Lack of financial literacy can be viewed as a root cause of many of the problems that individuals and families face in Mississippi, particularly in the state’s poor and rural areas, including the proliferation of both subprime mortgages and payday lending. As this report discusses, one of the best ways to develop financially literate and capable citizens is to educate children in the basics of personal finance. Individuals that lack basic financial knowledge and skills are at a disadvantage in navigating the modern economy and are vulnerable to being taken advantage …

Mississippi Kids Count: Child Abuse & Neglect In Mississippi, Jeremy Bressman, Kevin Golembiewski, Abram Orlansky, Crystal Redd

Delta Directions: Publications

While the number of children subject to abuse or neglect has dropped over the past decade, it is undoubtedly the case that child abuse and neglect remains one of the most serious concerns for children in the United States. Nationwide, nearly 702,000 children (or 9.3 out of 1,000) were subject to some form of abuse in the Fiscal Year 2009, a drop from even the year before (10.3 victims per 1,000 children), and a significant drop from earlier recorded findings in 1995 (15 victims per 1,000). Still, the numbers remain alarmingly high, particularly given the dire consequences. A number of …

Significance Of The Tearing Of The Temple Curtain, Andee-Sue Clark Dec 2012

Significance Of The Tearing Of The Temple Curtain, Andee-Sue Clark

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Through-out the course of this paper we will explore the importance of the tearing of the curtain after Jesus’ death. This topic is of great interest because, although it is only mentioned briefly in the gospels of the New Testament, many theologians and scholars claim it holds great importance and symbolism to the Christian faith. This question is also intriguing because in order to understand and formulate an answer one must also explore aspects of Judaism, including what Jews thought of this event."

Soil Erosion And Surface Water Quality Impacts Of Natural Gas Development In East Texas, Usa, Matthew W. Mcbroom, Todd Thomas, Yanli Zhang Dec 2012

Soil Erosion And Surface Water Quality Impacts Of Natural Gas Development In East Texas, Usa, Matthew W. Mcbroom, Todd Thomas, Yanli Zhang

Faculty Publications

Due to greater demands for hydrocarbons and improvements in drilling technology, development of oil and natural gas in some regions of the United States has increased dramatically. A 1.4 ha natural gas well pad was constructed in an intermittent stream channel at the Alto Experimental Watersheds in East Texas, USA (F1), while another 1.1 ha well pad was offset about 15 m from a nearby intermittent stream (F2). V-notch weirs were constructed downstream of these well pads and stream sedimentation and water quality was measured. For the 2009 water year, about 11.76 cm, or almost 222% more runoff resulted from …

Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomic Analysis Of The Matrix Microenvironment In Pluripotent Stem Cell Culture, Chris Hughes, Lida Radan, Wing Y. Chang, William L. Stanford, Dean H. Betts, Lynne Marie Postovit, Gilles A. Lajoie Dec 2012

Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomic Analysis Of The Matrix Microenvironment In Pluripotent Stem Cell Culture, Chris Hughes, Lida Radan, Wing Y. Chang, William L. Stanford, Dean H. Betts, Lynne Marie Postovit, Gilles A. Lajoie

Paediatrics Publications

The cellular microenvironment comprises soluble factors, support cells, and components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) that combine to regulate cellular behavior. Pluripotent stem cells utilize interactions between support cells and soluble factors in the microenvironment to assist in the maintenance of self-renewal and the process of differentiation. However, the ECM also plays a significant role in shaping the behavior of human pluripotent stem cells, including embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells. Moreover, it has recently been observed that deposited factors in a hESC-conditioned matrix have the potential to contribute to the reprogramming of metastatic melanoma cells. Therefore, …

Conserved Region 3 Of Human Papillomavirus 16 E7 Contributes To Deregulation Of The Retinoblastoma Tumor Suppressor, Biljana Todorovic, Katherine Hung, Paola Massimi, Nikita Avvakumov, Frederick A. Dick, Gary S. Shaw, Lawrence Banks, Joe S. Mymryk

Paediatrics Publications

The human papillomavirus (HPV) E7 oncoprotein binds cellular factors, preventing or retargeting their function and thereby making the infected cell conducive for viral replication. A key target of E7 is the product of the retinoblastoma susceptibility locus (pRb). This interaction results in the release of E2F transcription factors and drives the host cell into the S phase of the cell cycle. E7 binds pRb via a high-affinity binding site in conserved region 2 (CR2) and also targets a portion of cellular pRb for degradation via the proteasome. Evidence suggests that a secondary binding site exists in CR3, and that this …
