Religion: Does It Have A Place In Politics?, Amanda Vitale Juliet Janicik

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Despite tragedy, natural disasters, and loss, there is still an undying component of faith left in the arms of the souls that walk the earth. Though many hold the belief that no God or religion exists because an immense amount of horrible things happen in the world, these people still have faith in something – enough to have faith in nothing. For those who do hold strong beliefs through times of tragedy, their beliefs are firm that they will be grounded no matter the pain or loss that surrounds …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Rachael: My father had passed away before I had been born; however, I did not only have my mother. We had extended friends and family that knew my father and helped my mom take care of me and my siblings. I never really knew what it was like to have a father, but I learned a lot from friends and relatives that had both parents. I also had my nanny; Nana, that helped my mom with the kids while she was going to school for her master’s degree in …

The Spirit Of Counseling: A Comparison Of “Gloria” And A Christmas Carol, Tim Madigan

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Ebenezer Scrooge’s example may be unique in Dickens’ work: the story’s motivation is the regeneration of a single lost soul . . . This change of life is not as sudden (as Chesterton said) “as the conversion of a man at a Salvation Army”; the process as presented in Dickens’ narrative is precise and subtle, playing on the man’s deeper repressed feelings aroused from a recollection of his former self, an education through the example of his clerk and nephew, and a warning of what his fate will be …

Prevalence Of Obesity Among Young Asian-American Children, Anjali Jain, Stephanie Mitchell, Radha Chirumamilla, Jin Zhang, Ivor B. Horn, Amy Lewin, Z. Jennifer Huang

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND:

Asian-American children are considered to be at low risk of obesity, but previous estimates have not distinguished between children from different Asian countries. We estimate the prevalence of obesity among Asian-American children by mother's country of origin, generational status, and family socioeconomic factors using a secondary analysis of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) wave III (children ∼4 years old) dataset.

METHODS:

The ECLS-B is a nationally representative study of children born in 2001 that oversampled births to Asian mothers. Asian ethnic categories included Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, and Other Asian/Pacific Islander. The primary outcome …

The Discovery Of Two Pulsating Subdwarf B Stars In Ngc 6791 Using Kepler Data, Michael D. Reed, Andrzej S. Baran, R. H. Østensen, J. Telting, S. J. O'Toole

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

We report the discovery of two new pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) stars in the open cluster NGC6791 using data from the Kepler spacecraft. Three sdB stars were observed for one month in short-cadence (1min) mode and three months in long-cadence (30min) mode during Quarter 11 (fall 2011). The stars have Kepler Input Catalogue numbers of 2437937, 2569576 and 2569583 with previous designations of B5, B3 and B6, respectively. Another sdB star exists in the cluster and it is also known to be a pulsator. We also obtained Nordic Optical Telescope spectra to update effective temperatures, surface gravities and helium abundances …

Residential Indoor Pm2.5 In Wood Stove Homes: Follow-Up Of The Libby Changeout Program, Curtis W. Noonan, William Navidi, Lianne Sheppard, Christopher P. Palmer, Megan Ann Bergauff, Kathi Hooper, Tony Ward

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

In 2005 through 2008 a small rural mountain valley community engaged in a wood stove changeout program to address concerns of poor ambient air quality. During this program we assessed changes to indoor air quality before and after the introduction of a new, lower emission wood stove. We previously reported a greater than 70% reduction in indoor PM2.5 concentrations in homes following the installation of a new EPA-certified stove within the home. We report here on follow-up of the experiences in these and other homes over three winters of sample collection. In 21 homes, we compared pre-changeout PM2.5 …

Influence Of Temperature On The Physiology And Virulence Of The Insect Pathogen Serratia Sp. Strain Scbi, Lauren M. Petersen, Louis S. Tisa

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

The physiology of a newly recognized Serratia species, termed South African Caenorhabditis briggsae Isolate (SCBI), which is both a nematode mutualist and an insect pathogen, was investigated and compared to that of Serratia marcescens Db11, a broad-host-range pathogen. The two Serratia strains had comparable levels of virulence for Manduca sexta and similar cytotoxic activity patterns, but motility and lipase and hemolytic activities differed significantly between them.

In The Wake Of The Spill: Environmental Views Along The Gulf Coast, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford, Jessica D. Ulrich

Sociology

Abstract

Objectives

We analyze patterns in environmental views of Gulf Coast residents, in the wake of the 2010 oil spill. To what extent do spill-related and other environmental views vary with individual characteristics, personal experience with the spill, or characteristics of place?

Methods

About 2,000 residents of selected coastal regions in Louisiana and Florida were interviewed by telephone in late summer 2010.

Results

One-quarter of the respondents said that their environmental views had changed as a result of the spill. Despite reporting more change, more spill effects, and greater threats from climate-induced sea-level rise, Louisiana respondents were less likely to …

Southern Expansion Of The Brown Alga Colpomenia Peregrina Sauvageau (Scytosiphonales) In The Northwest Atlantic Ocean, Lindsay A. Green, Arthur C. Mathieson, Christopher D. Neefus, Hannah M. Traggis, Clinton J. Dawes Dec 2012

Southern Expansion Of The Brown Alga Colpomenia Peregrina Sauvageau (Scytosiphonales) In The Northwest Atlantic Ocean, Lindsay A. Green, Arthur C. Mathieson, Christopher D. Neefus, Hannah M. Traggis, Clinton J. Dawes

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Blackler first recorded Colpomenia peregrina in the Northwest Atlantic based on collections from Nova Scotia, Canada. Five decades later we found large quantities of C. peregrina in Maine, USA, even though it was absent during earlier floristic studies in this region. Thus, C. peregrina has undergone a rapid southern expansion along the Northwest Atlantic coast. While the causes of such an expansion are unknown, it could have a major effect on both shellfish cultivation and native seaweeds within New England because of competitive interactions and increased drag.

Liszt’S O Lieb’ So Lang Du Lieben Kannst: The Song That Inspired Liebesträume And The Composer’S Programmatic Literature, Danielle Aldach Dec 2012

Liszt’S O Lieb’ So Lang Du Lieben Kannst: The Song That Inspired Liebesträume And The Composer’S Programmatic Literature, Danielle Aldach

Graduate Student Work

Liszt’s Liebesträume (1850) for solo piano is one of the most well-known piano pieces of the romantic period. However, the poetry behind the music is often overlooked. Before the piano piece was written, Liszt set Ferdinand Freiligrath’s poem O Lieb’ so lang du lieben kannst (1847) as a soprano/tenor Lied. It was not until three years later that the song was transcribed for piano solo. This paper will examine several differences that arise from the poem’s two settings. These pieces were compositionally influential at the time Liszt was developing programmatic piano literature. The composer used romantic elements in the piano …

The Effects Of A Goal-Setting Program On Cognitive And Somatic State Anxiety, State Self-Confidence, And Performance Of High School Swimmers, Jasmine R. Millan

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a staggered approach, season long goal-setting training program on the state self-confidence, cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and performance of high school female swimmers. It was hypothesized that the use of a goal-setting training program would result in the swimmers having higher state self-confidence, lower cognitive state anxiety, lower somatic state anxiety, and improved performance. Results indicated that participation in a ten week goal-setting training program successfully helped high school female swimmers achieve higher state self- confidence, lower cognitive state anxiety, lower somatic state anxiety, and improved performance.
