Limitations On Government: A Comparative Constitutional Analysis Of American And Iraqi Efforts To Preserve Liberty And To Protect Against Arbitrariness, Hemin Ibrahim Qadir Dec 2012

Limitations On Government: A Comparative Constitutional Analysis Of American And Iraqi Efforts To Preserve Liberty And To Protect Against Arbitrariness, Hemin Ibrahim Qadir

Law Student Scholarship

This dissertation is a comparative study in constitutionalism, the historical process of limiting government powers to enable the people to be well served and protected in important aspects of their human dignity. The two constitutional systems explored here are those of the United States and Iraq.

People have to be guaranteed protection and the Constitution must restrict the government from being too powerful to enact whatever laws or acts they want. The United States of America passed through many stages from the colonial period until present day to limit government powers, to protect human rights, fundamental rights, natural rights, and …

An Opportunity For Diagonal Development In Global Surgery: Cleft Lip And Palate Care In Resource-Limited Settings, Christopher D. Hughes Dec 2012

An Opportunity For Diagonal Development In Global Surgery: Cleft Lip And Palate Care In Resource-Limited Settings, Christopher D. Hughes

Articles - Patient Care

Global cleft surgery missions have provided much-needed care to millions of poor patients worldwide. Still, surgical capacity in low- and middle-income countries is generally inadequate. Through surgical missions, global cleft care has largely ascribed to a vertical model of healthcare delivery, which is disease specific, and tends to deliver services parallel to, but not necessarily within, the local healthcare system. The vertical model has been used to address infectious diseases as well as humanitarian emergencies. By contrast, a horizontal model for healthcare delivery tends to focus on long-term investments in public health infrastructure and human capital and has less often …

UCHC Articles - Research

Bromelain (Br) is a cysteine peptidase (GenBank AEH26024.1) from pineapple, with over 40 years of clinical use. The constituents mediating its anti-inflammatory activity are not thoroughly characterized and no peptide biomarker exists. Our objective is to characterize Br raw material and identify peptides in the plasma of Br treated mice. After SDS-PAGE in-gel digestion, Br (VN#3507; Middletown, CT, USA) peptides were analyzed via LC/MS/MS using 95% protein probability, 95% peptide probability, and a minimum peptide number = 5. Br spiked mouse plasma (1 ug/ul) and plasma from i.p. treated mice (12 mg/kg) were assessed using SRM. In Br raw material, …

Bone-Specific Overexpression Of Npy Modulates Osteogenesis, I Matic, B G. Matthews, T Kizivat, J C. Igwe, D J. Adams, Ivo Kalajzic Dec 2012

Bone-Specific Overexpression Of Npy Modulates Osteogenesis, I Matic, B G. Matthews, T Kizivat, J C. Igwe, D J. Adams, Ivo Kalajzic

UCHC Articles - Research

Objectives

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a peptide involved in the regulation of appetite and energy homeostasis. Genetic data indicates that NPY decreases bone formation via central and peripheral activities. NPY is produced by various cell types including osteocytes and osteoblasts and there is evidence suggesting that peripheral NPY is important for regulation of bone formation. We sought to investigate the role of bone-derived NPY in bone metabolism.

Methods

We generated a mouse where NPY was over-expressed specifically in mature osteoblasts and osteocytes (Col2.3NPY) and characterized the bone phenotype of these mice in vivo and in vitro.

Results

Trabecular and cortical …

Distinct Mechanisms Mediate Naïve And Memory Cd8 T-Cell Tolerance, Evan R. Jellison, Elizabeth G. Lingenheld, Li Zu, Lynn Puddington, Leo Lefrancois

UCHC Articles - Research

Peripheral tolerance to developmentally regulated antigens is necessary to sustain tissue homeostasis. We have now devised an inducible and reversible system that allows interrogation of T-cell tolerance induction in endogenous naïve and memory CD8 T cells. Our data show that peripheral CD8 T-cell tolerance can be preserved through two distinct mechanisms, antigen addiction leading to anergy for naïve T cells and ignorance for memory T cells. Induction of antigen in dendritic cells resulted in substantial expansion and maintenance of endogenous antigen-specific CD8 T cells. The self-reactive cells initially exhibited effector activity but eventually became unresponsive. Upon antigen removal, the antigen-specific …

The Development From High Gothic To The Rayonnant Style Through Reims Cathedral And The Sainte-Chapelle, Diane Prigent Dec 2012

The Development From High Gothic To The Rayonnant Style Through Reims Cathedral And The Sainte-Chapelle, Diane Prigent

Student Scholarship

The Gothic style introduces an incredibly influential set of engineering and design principles for architecture and architectural decoration in art history. It emanated from France in 1140 and evolved through 1500. Architects and patrons developed the style through centuries constantly innovating their building techniques in order to elevate and complicate their enormous structures. These architects' objective was to increase the height of the churches, intensifying their verticality. In the late middle ages, France was governed by a powerful monarchic dynasty, the Capetians. The royal family was powerful, wealthy and closely allied with the Catholic Church. This dynasty strongly encouraged religious …

Women Leading Women: Reinforcing The Glass Ceiling?, Marian A. Suarez Dec 2012

Women Leading Women: Reinforcing The Glass Ceiling?, Marian A. Suarez

Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative narrative study explored the experiences of 10 women who worked in Corporate America and reported to female supervisors, and the perceptions they attached to those relationships with regard to their professional growth and career advancement. The main goal of the study was to understand how these women felt their female leaders either helped or hindered their climb up the corporate ladder. The Social Cognitive Theory of Gender Development and the narrative inquiry framework were used to shed light on the experiences reported by the female employees and how their gender and the gender of their supervisors may have …

African American Women In Informal Leadership In The African Methodist Episcopal Church, Tava Renee' Herring Dec 2012

African American Women In Informal Leadership In The African Methodist Episcopal Church, Tava Renee' Herring

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the phenomenon of Church Mothers as they perceived themselves as informal leaders in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. While it is generally acknowledged that there are gender and minority differences in leadership, there has been little exploration in how these differences affect the overall landscape of leadership and leadership theory in the African American community. Criteria for participant selection for the study were informed by Pielstick’s characteristics of informal leadership: shared vision, communication, relationships, community, guidance, and character. The study was conducted from the Womanist perspective as a way of understanding …

Conflict Management Styles In An Hbcu Hsi Community College Setting, Natasha P. Schmittou

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate the conflict management styles in an HBCU and HSI community college and how gender, power position, age, educational level, and ethnicity influence conflict management. A convenience sample of 80 administrators and 220 subordinates completed an electronic demographic survey and the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II measuring conflict management styles— integrating, obliging, dominating, avoiding, and compromising. Nahavandi’s (2003) transformational approach to leadership which is sister to the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Theory approach emphasizes the importance of developing and maintaining relationships between leaders and followers. Main findings showed differences in conflict management styles between …

How Do Wordless Picture Books Help Develop Writing For All Students?, Shannon Marble

Education Masters

This action research paper asked the question, “How do wordless picture books help develop writing for all students?” Through the results, there were mixed findings on how wordless picture books can help students with writing. Data was collected through student writing samples, field notes based off of the student writing, and two interviews. The findings section presents writing samples and tables based off of the writing samples, as well as data from the interviews. The data showed three recurring themes during the study: wordless picture books encourage students to write, provide a writing tool for older students, and develop written …
