A Tangle Net Study On Relative Abundance And Habitat Preference Of Elasmobranchs In North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, Moriah Heather Moore Dec 2012

A Tangle Net Study On Relative Abundance And Habitat Preference Of Elasmobranchs In North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, Moriah Heather Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although habitat selection is relatively well studied in some elasmobranchs, no field or lab studies have focused on sediment preference, which is important to other benthic marine vertebrates. To determine the relative abundance and sediment preference of shallow water benthic elasmobranch inhabitants of North Inlet, SC, we employed 187 30 minute tangle net sets over two sediment types (mud and sand). The majority of our capture consisted of 41 Dasyatis sayi (tagged 37) and 31 Sphyrna tiburo (tagged 14). Although D. sayi had been recorded in North Inlet, previous studies found greater numbers of congeners D. americana and D. sabina. …

Predictors Of Student's Attitudes Toward Science Literacy, Irina I. Holden Dec 2012

Predictors Of Student's Attitudes Toward Science Literacy, Irina I. Holden

Communications in Information Literacy

Being information and science literate are crucial in an age when scientific developments influence the political arena and vice versa. In order to become active and responsible citizens, students must understand such issues as global warming and stem cell research. Furthermore, they must be lifelong learners, capable of researching and educating themselves about new scientific developments. These are some of the complex issues that information literacy educators must address. This article reports on the results of a survey of student's attitudes towards science literacy and lifelong learning, and on variables associated with their attitudes. Most of the students' attitudes were …

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Appeals from district court judgments of conviction based on similar questions regarding double jeopardy and redundancy. The Court considered whether a criminal defendant who is charged with both attempted murder and battery or aggravated battery through a single act can be so charged, or whether such a charge constitutes double jeopardy, or violates Nevada’s common law redundancy theory.

Difficult Dialogues: The Technologies And Limits Of Reconciliation, Dawne Moon Dec 2012

Difficult Dialogues: The Technologies And Limits Of Reconciliation, Dawne Moon

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Projects known as dialogue or reconciliation build on the common ground between members of historically adversarial groups to help overcome vicious cycles of retaliation. This chapter compares observations from two studies of religious and religio-ethnic communities. The more recent is a qualitative study of American Jews' understandings and experiences of anti-Semitism and how it relates to politics, particularly around the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. It compares some of the findings from this study with findings that emerged in earlier ethnographic research on debates about homosexuality within the United Methodist Church. The chapter explores the intersection of politics with the self, which sociological …

Modernization, Sexual Risk-Taking, And Gynecological Morbidity Among Bolivian Forager-Horticulturalists, Jonathan Stieglitz, Aaron D. Blackwell, Raúl Quispe Gutierrez, Edhitt Cortez Linares, Michael Gurven, Hillard Kaplan Dec 2012

Modernization, Sexual Risk-Taking, And Gynecological Morbidity Among Bolivian Forager-Horticulturalists, Jonathan Stieglitz, Aaron D. Blackwell, Raúl Quispe Gutierrez, Edhitt Cortez Linares, Michael Gurven, Hillard Kaplan

ESI Publications

Sexual risk-taking and reproductive morbidity are common among rapidly modernizing populations with little material wealth, limited schooling, minimal access to modern contraception and healthcare, and gendered inequalities in resource access that limit female autonomy in cohabiting relationships. Few studies have examined how modernization influences sexual risk-taking and reproductive health early in demographic transition. Tsimane are a natural fertility population of Bolivian forager-farmers; they are not urbanized, reside in small-scale villages, and lack public health infrastructure. We test whether modernization is associated with greater sexual risk-taking, report prevalence of gynecological morbidity (GM), and test whether modernization, sexual risk-taking and parity are …

Researching Effective Methods For Teaching The Phases Of The Moon, Heather Patti Jones Dec 2012

Researching Effective Methods For Teaching The Phases Of The Moon, Heather Patti Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effectiveness of commonly used instructional methods for teaching the phases of the Moon to fifth and sixth grade students. The instructional methods investigated were the use of diagrams, animations, and models. The effectiveness of each method was tested by measuring students' understanding of Moon phases with a pre and post-assessment after receiving instruction with a specific method or combination of methods. These methods were then evaluated for their ability to help students learn essential concepts, reinforce relevant vocabulary and discourage misconceptions. Results showed that students had better scores with less prevalence of misconception when they were …

Can Public Education Be Saved? An Argument For Educational Reform, Kathrine Hyatt Dec 2012

Can Public Education Be Saved? An Argument For Educational Reform, Kathrine Hyatt

Honors Theses

Education, a key to later success, needs to be the number one priority. However, the American of public education has many systemic problems that are inhibiting children from reaching their full potential. This literature review first examines the colonial roots of American education and briefly tracks the development. Then, four major systemic problems are addressed: the over reliance on standardized testing, teaching methods and curriculum, lack of creativity, and how the cycle of poverty impacts learning. Finally solutions are discussed, with the ultimate recommendation being to adapt the Montessori Method.

The Effects Of Climate Change And Overexploitation On Birds And Mammals: Phenological Shifts, Range Shifts, And Population Changes, Rachel Denny Dec 2012

The Effects Of Climate Change And Overexploitation On Birds And Mammals: Phenological Shifts, Range Shifts, And Population Changes, Rachel Denny

Honors Theses

Our world is changing more than many individuals could imagine. Climate change is not a hoax. Comprehensive empirical records of changes since 1900 in local, regional, and global temperature clearly indicate that Earth is warming more rapidly than ever in recorded history. In response, some bird species are already shifting, both phenologically (timing) and geographically. However, the majority of birds are not shifting or not shifting fast enough, and this is resulting in population declines. A much smaller number of studies suggest that mammals are also shifting phenologically and geographically.

If we do not alter our current behaviors soon, Earth …

Selection Of Trna Charging Quality Control Mechanisms That Increase Mistranslation Of The Genetic Code, Srujana S. Yadavalli, Michael Ibba Dec 2012

Selection Of Trna Charging Quality Control Mechanisms That Increase Mistranslation Of The Genetic Code, Srujana S. Yadavalli, Michael Ibba

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Mistranslation can follow two events during protein synthesis: production of non-cognate amino acid:transfer RNA (tRNA) pairs by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) and inaccurate selection of aminoacyl-tRNAs by the ribosome. Many aaRSs actively edit non-cognate amino acids, but editing mechanisms are not evolutionarily conserved, and their physiological significance remains unclear. To address the connection between aaRSs and mistranslation, the evolutionary divergence of tyrosine editing by phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase (PheRS) was used as a model. Certain PheRSs are naturally error prone, most notably a Mycoplasma example that displayed a low level of specificity consistent with elevated mistranslation of the proteome. Mycoplasma PheRS was found …

Tektosyne Three Architectures For Orchestra, Alessandra Salvati Dec 2012

Tektosyne Three Architectures For Orchestra, Alessandra Salvati

Open Access Dissertations

Tektosyne is a collection of three pieces for symphonic orchestra. This thesis provides an aesthetic and technical analysis of it, with particular emphasis on the constructive processes at basis of the individual and overall structures, and the generation and proliferation of materials. The title is an ancient Greek word, “tektosyne,” referring to the carpentry and, more generally, to any craftsman or workman, from gymnastics to poetry. The idea of using it as a title – and framing these pieces as “architectures” – came from a conversation I had with an architect, and my attempt to translate for him the basic …

Sport Tourists In A Gaming Destination: Predicting Gaming And Non-Gaming Expenditures, Chris Brown, James A. Busser, Seyhmus Baloglu Dec 2012

Sport Tourists In A Gaming Destination: Predicting Gaming And Non-Gaming Expenditures, Chris Brown, James A. Busser, Seyhmus Baloglu

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Sport tourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry. Although there are a number of benefits to cities as a result of sport tourism, the most desired aspect of hosting contests is economic impact. This study examined the gaming and non-gaming impact of six major sporting events held in Las Vegas over a ten-year period. The results indicate that length of stay is a significant contributor to economic impact and that sport tourism has an important role to play in the economy of Las Vegas.

Analyzing The Relationship Between Systematic Risk And Financial Variables In The Casino Industry, Toni Repetti, Jungsun Kim Dec 2012

Analyzing The Relationship Between Systematic Risk And Financial Variables In The Casino Industry, Toni Repetti, Jungsun Kim

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The gaming industry, previous to 2007, had experienced a continued increase in revenues and stock prices, but in late 2007, the industry started to be affected by a recession. To have a better understanding of the relationship between this external economic factor (recession) and a gaming company's systematic risk (beta), this study analyzed which financial ratios are significant predictors of beta and evaluated if these financial ratios better predict beta before or during the recession. The financial ratios examined in this study include return on assets, liabilities as a percentage of assets, asset turnover, quick ratio, EBIT growth rate, and …

Estimating The Impact Of California Tribal Gaming On Demand For Casino Gaming In Nevada, William R. Eadington, Richard H. Wells, Derek Gossi Dec 2012

Estimating The Impact Of California Tribal Gaming On Demand For Casino Gaming In Nevada, William R. Eadington, Richard H. Wells, Derek Gossi

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Since 1990, the California tribal casino industry has grown from a very small and insignificant industry to one with annual gross gaming revenues of about $7.5 billion per annum by 2009. Over this same period, Nevada's gaming revenues grew from approximately $5.0 billion in 1990 to $10.4 billion in 2009, having declined from a peak of $12.8 billion in 2007. Much of the recent decline in Nevada and especially Las Vegas can be attributed to the severity of the economic recession of 2007-2009. However, the major Northern Nevada destination resorts of Reno and South Lake Tahoe had experienced substantial slowdowns …

''Shots From The Pulpit:'' An Ethnographic Content Analysis Of United States Anti-Gambling Social Movement Documents From 1816-2010, Bo J. Bernhard, Robert Futrell, Andrew Harper Dec 2012

''Shots From The Pulpit:'' An Ethnographic Content Analysis Of United States Anti-Gambling Social Movement Documents From 1816-2010, Bo J. Bernhard, Robert Futrell, Andrew Harper

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The history of anti-gambling impulses is perhaps as old as the gambling impulse itself, but academic research has thus far neglected the topic of anti-gambling social movements. Using social movement literature as a theoretical guide and ethnographic content analysis as a methodological tool, this paper examines anti-gambling documents produced in the United States over nearly two hundred years. During this period, three distinct periods emerge: first, an early ( 1816-1915) period framed the gambling act on strict religious grounds as an individual sin. This religious framing was then challenged by the rise of more rational and scientifically-based medical discourses on …

Evaluating The Impact Of A New Resort Amenity On Gaming Business Volumes, Anthony F. Lucas, Sarah Tanford Dec 2012

Evaluating The Impact Of A New Resort Amenity On Gaming Business Volumes, Anthony F. Lucas, Sarah Tanford

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Using performance data from an Atlantic City hotel-casino, theoretical models are advanced to estimate the effects of a new indoor pool/nightclub on both daily coin-in and table game drop. This study represents the first attempt to estimate the indirect gaming contributions of a new nongaming amenity. The pool/nightclub variable was found to significantly increase table game drop at a rate of $150,500 per day, but it failed to produce a significant effect in the coin-in model. The core model, design, and results described herein are critical to operators and developers alike, as estimating the impacts of new nongaming amenities on …

A Lack Of Willpower May Influence A Leader’S Ability To Act Morally, Tom Karp Dec 2012

A Lack Of Willpower May Influence A Leader’S Ability To Act Morally, Tom Karp

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Acts of moral leadership do not come without risks of loss of employment, a lessening of personal stature, and compromised mental and physical wellbeing. Thus, the quest to act as a values-based leader necessarily commands the exercise of unfettered willpower and a tenacious willingness to assume such risks.

The Conscious Organization: Prospects For A Self-Actualized Workforce, John Renesch Dec 2012

The Conscious Organization: Prospects For A Self-Actualized Workforce, John Renesch

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Values-based leadership is not something that is readily attainable without an individual and collective commitment to a lifelong course of self-evaluation. The “Conscious Organization” model is re-introduced by Renesch who describes it as “a group of people who are constantly examining their individual and collective consciousness.” Thus, the conscious organization is not a stagnant goal, but perpetually a work-in-progress.

Secrets Of Your Leadership Success: The 11 Indispensable E’S Of A Leader, M. S. Rao

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Professor Rao has used his experiences in organizational systems to produce a “recipe” for true leadership. In developing the 11 E’s — from Enthusiasm to Ethics —this author attempts to identify the traits characteristically and uniformly found in great leaders. While each component may be descriptive of a recognized head of a particular organization, successful principled leadership mandates the amalgamation of all of these enumerated traits.

They focus upon the collective activities of a group committed to advancing local business practices while eliminating unnecessary transportation costs, boosting the region’s economic infrastructure, and most importantly, bringing people together to share experiences and pass along knowledge designed to benefit their communities and generate a sustainable agricultural-based economy.

Ethical Governance In The Indian Construction Industry: A Case Study Of Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Shashank Shah Dec 2012

Ethical Governance In The Indian Construction Industry: A Case Study Of Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Shashank Shah

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Governance has moved beyond mere fulfilment of legal requirements. The corporate debacles of the last decade and more have indicated how very respectable corporate organisations across the globe succumbed to greed and compromised on ethics and organisational value systems. Corporate Governance is mainly concerned with the intrinsic nature, purpose, integrity, and identity of an organisation. It encompasses the entire gamut of organisational stakeholders. While a lot of literature is available in the field of Corporate Governance, an analysis of corporate organisations in terms of their stakeholder-related initiatives has hitherto not been attempted. In this paper, the author has used the …
