“Colonists And Convicts”, Dakota Hoskins
“Colonists And Convicts”, Dakota Hoskins
History First-Year Seminar Research
The “Colonists and Convicts” cartoon debuted in the British magazine called Punch in October 1864. The cartoon brings to life the bickering that occurred between the Australian colonists and the British officers. It gives off the idea that the colonists were more annoyed with the officers than the convicts themselves. The rugged Australians were fed up with being forced fed the British rulings.

In the New York magazine Harper’s Weekly on December 1, 1876, “The Ignorant Vote – Honors Are Easy” cartoon is showing the difference that the African American Republican vote and Irish Catholic Democratic vote played in the 1876 election between Rutherford B. Hayes, a republican, and Samuel J. Tilden, a democrat. There was a dispute on who the actual election winner was because the votes were so close.

“The First Blow At The Chinese Question”, Carlos Harris
History First-Year Seminar Research
Published as the cover story of “The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp” on December 8, 1877, “The First Blow at the Chinese Question” depicts the struggle between the American work force and the Chinese migrants. In front of a store in the middle of China Town, a protestor for the American “Working Men’s Procession” is shown punching a regular Chinese migrant man in his face. Inside the store, stands an angry crowd of Chinese migrants; behind the protestor, is more men supporting his cause against the Chinese. At first glance, the cartoon is straight forward, but there is deeper symbolism within …

“The Propagation Society—More Free Than Welcome”, Arneisha Swanson
History First-Year Seminar Research
This cartoon was published independently by Nathanial Currier circa 1855. “The Propagation Society- More Free than Welcome” reflects the Americans point of view on the Irish Catholic immigrants in 1855. In the cartoon the priest is bombarding the Americans to step aside so that they can take over all spiritual welfare. Embedded into the cartoon is a message of an anti-Catholic group the “Know Nothings” and their attempt to get rid of the Irish Catholics.

Volume Abstract, David B. Landon, James A. Delle, Patrick J. Heaton
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This volume presents research conducted at the convergence of two projects: the first a survey, inventory, and assessment of historic sites located within the boundaries of the Finger Lakes National Forest, a small national forest located in central New York; the second a pedagogical experiment conducted in the spring of 1998, the goal of which was to assess how a rather typical CRM project could be used to train graduate students in archaeology in manipulating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to control and interpret archaeological data. This convergence resulted in the construction of a GIS-based data management system for historic-period …

Florida Rainfall Climatology In Observations And Climate Model Simulations, Roque Vinicio Cespedes
Florida Rainfall Climatology In Observations And Climate Model Simulations, Roque Vinicio Cespedes
Open Access Theses
Under climate change, future hydroclimate impacts could occur that are well outside the extremes of current historical records. General circulation models (GCMs) predict that tropical precipitation will increase within convective zones, and decrease at the margins of the convective zones. Florida and most of the Caribbean are at the margins, and most GCMs predict that rainfall will decrease over Florida and the Caribbean. This drying signal is more pronounced during the boreal summer months (Florida’s rainy season). However, because of the insufficient resolution of the land-sea distribution of current GCMs, it is unclear what their predictions means for Florida. An …

Coexistence Of Sympatric Taxa Of Chamaecrista Section Xerocalyx: Addressing The Interplay Between Morphology And Biotic Interactions, Beatriz Baker-Méio
Coexistence Of Sympatric Taxa Of Chamaecrista Section Xerocalyx: Addressing The Interplay Between Morphology And Biotic Interactions, Beatriz Baker-Méio
Dissertations
Animal-plant interactions may prevent gene flow and promote divergent selection among closely related plants, ultimately leading to formation of new species. This may be the case for Chamaecrista sect. Xerocalyx, in which two or more of the 24 varieties often are encountered in the same area, with marked morphological and phenological differences among them. Over a broad geographical range, however, the morphological gaps among varieties disappear. Several biotic interactions contribute to the fitness of Chamaecrista species. Their flowers are pollinated by bees, and herbivores attack their leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. In addition, all species produce extrafloral nectar, which …

The Educational Autonomy Of Perfectionist Religious Groups In A Liberal State, Mark D. Rosen
The Educational Autonomy Of Perfectionist Religious Groups In A Liberal State, Mark D. Rosen
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article draws upon, but reworks, John Rawls’ framework from Political Liberalism to determine the degree of educational autonomy that illiberal perfectionist religious groups ought to enjoy in a liberal state. I start by arguing that Rawls mistakenly concludes that political liberalism flatly cannot accommodate Perfectionists, and that his misstep is attributable to two errors: (1) Rawls utilizes an overly restrictive “political conception of the person” in determining who participates in the original position, and (2) Rawls overlooks the possibility of a “federalist” basic political structure that can afford significant political autonomy to different groups within a single country. With …

Tuning In To The Needs Of International Students, Elizabeth Ramsey
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
The objectives of this presentation were to increase awareness of the growing international student population at Boise State University and offer tips on how best to serve them. International students often have very different educational backgrounds which affect their perceptions of what the library can do for them. By being aware of the cultural differences and other barriers to effective communication, public services staff at the library may be better situated to help international students meet their educational goals.

Towards Integration: An Autoethnography On The Development Of Identity, Kanchana Henrich
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This thesis is an autoethnography that explores my own experience of identity development. The intention of this research was to try and find an answer as to why I have not yet been able to develop a cohesive sense of self, in which I am able to accept and embody all of my seemingly disparate parts. I have thus far in my life felt scattered, and unable to accept both the cultures into which I was born, as well as the cultures to which I am organically drawn. Through introspection, reflective writing, and interviewing family members, I have been able …

Background
The human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, is designated as a group 1 carcinogen, and is the major risk factor for cholangiocarcinoma in endemic countries throughout Southeast Asia. Proteins in the excretory-secretory products and tegumental surface membranes of the fluke have been proposed to play pivotal roles in parasite survival in the host, and subsequent pathogenesis. These macromolecules are therefore valid targets for the development of vaccines and new drugs to control the infection. Tetraspanins (TSP) are prominent components of the tegument of blood flukes where they are essential for tegument formation, are directly exposed to the immune system, …
