Hydrated lime is used for pH adjustment as part of the treatment process at the main wastewater treatment plant in Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station, Manjung. Many problems are encountered in usage of hydrated lime mainly in terms of handling. Manual labour is used to load hydrated lime into bag unloader and it is a messy job because some of the chemical spills and gets air borne. This is also a safety concern. The hydrated lime also frequently chokes the outlet of storage silo and is another manual job to clear the blockage. This study is important because replacement of …

Peculiar Feed-Forward Loop Network Motifs In Escherichia Coli / Kok Eng Piew, Eng Piew Kok
Student Works (2010-2019)
A feed-forward loop (FFL) is one type of transcription network motifs studied in systems biology. So far, eight types of FFL based on their regulatory patterns have been identified. The majority of FFL found in transcription networks of biological systems have been identified to belong to coherent and incoherent type 1 FFL. Nevertheless, six FFL types (coherent and incoherent type 2, 3 and 4 FFL) are present in low frequencies in Escherichia coli. The persistence and not elimination of these “peculiar” FFL through natural selection is perplexing. One way to understanding this conundrum is to study the dynamics of these …

Currently, existing networks which utilizes Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) have come to its limitation, with the increase of data traffic extending the operational bandwidth from the C- to the L-band. Although the L-band can sustain current demands, there is a pressing need to explore the S-band region for future needs. One of the important components for operation in the S-band region is the S-band optical amplifier, which requires in-depth investigation and is the scope and objective of this thesis. The work will undertake a nearly comprehensive evaluation of the different types of optical amplifiers such as Erbium Doped Fibers …
Why Corporate Social Responsibility Will Emerge As A Driver Of Effective And Compelling Differentiation For Chinese Brands, Joseph Baladi
Why Corporate Social Responsibility Will Emerge As A Driver Of Effective And Compelling Differentiation For Chinese Brands, Joseph Baladi
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Although the responsibility and role of business within society have evolved over the past two decades, they remain issues that retain conceptual dimensions. This means that instead of consensus over form and function, both are surrounded by a persistent cloud of disagreement and confusion. Too many people remain unsure about what they represent, the importance they play and the impact they have (or should have) on business as well as society. For one thing, different interpretations of what defines business responsibility to society exist. These range from concern over business’ environmental impact and contribution to climate change, to sustainability practices, …

In the U.S. motion picture industry, DVDs are increasingly a major source of revenue for moviestudios. Two important strategic decisions for DVDs are the release date and price. Industry evidencesuggests studios consider various release options as evidenced by their pre-release announcements. Whendeciding DVD release dates and prices, studios must consider the following. First, weeks of high demandpotential, increase sales. Second, intense competition in weeks of peak demand might reduce marketshare, lower margins and lead to higher costs of release. Third, deferring a DVD release (e.g. to a nonpeakdemand week) after the movie’s theatrical run reduces the potential sales of the …

Sell-side analysts employ different benchmarks when defining their stock recommendations. Forexample, a ‘buy’ for some brokers means the stock is expected to outperform its peers in the same sector(“industry benchmarkers”), while for other brokers it means the stock is expected to outperform themarket (“market benchmarkers”), or just some absolute return (“total benchmarkers”). We use thesebenchmarks to analyze the role of stock picking, industry picking and market timing in contributing to theperformance of stock recommendations. We are able to do so given that different benchmarks suggest theuse of different sets of abilities. Analysis of the relation between analysts’ recommendations and theirlong-term …

Although personality constructs are now widely accepted as being important for understanding work behavior, self-report personality tests as a method of assessment are not without their critics (e.g., Morgeson et al., 2007). Whether misguided or not, concerns persist regarding the validity of these measures and the issue of applicant faking has yet to be fully resolved (Tett & Christiansen, 2007). Moreover, applicant reactions tend to be less favorable for personality inventories than many other assessments commonly used in employment settings (Hausknecht, Day, & Thomas, 2004). To some, self-report inventories may be a poor way to assess personality traits, and yet …

Student Works (2010-2019)
Human papillomaviruses have been identified as the major aetiological factor in cervical cancer. Constitutive expression of the high risk HPV E6 and E7 oncoproteins are important for malignant transformation in infected keratinocytes. In particular, E6 and E7 bind to and inactivate the cellular tumor suppressors p53 and pRB, respectively, thus delaying differentiation and inducing proliferation in suprabasal keratinocytes to enable HPV replication. One member of the pRB family, p130 appears to be an important target for E7 in promoting S-phase entry. Recently, it has been discovered that p130 is part of a large protein complex termed DREAM. The composition of …

An Artificial Co-Stimulation Classifier For Malicious Api Calls Classification In Portable Executable Malwares / Saman Mirza Abdulla, Saman Mirza Abdulla
Student Works (2010-2019)
Recently, most researchers have employed behaviour based detection systems to classify Portable Executable (PE) malwares. They usually tried to identify malicious Application Programming Interface (API) calls among the sequence of calls that made by a suspected application. They depended mostly on measuring the similarity or the distance between the suspected API calls with a set of predefined calls that collected from normal and malware applications. However, malwares always tried to keep their normality through hiding their malicious activities. Within such behaviours, calls that made by PE malwares become more similar to normal, which in turn, challenging most distinguishing models. Even …

Gender Differences In The Reactivity Of Normoglycemic And Diabetic Rat Aorta And The Effects Of Quercetin And 17Β-Estradiol / Aloysius Umelo Iguegbe, Umelo Iguegbe Aloysius
Student Works (2010-2019)
Background & objectives: Diabetes is a stronger risk factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases in the female than the male gender. Diabetes-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) alters the function of endogenous vasoconstrictors for which the antioxidant, quercetin, has been shown to restore in diabetic male rats, which has not been proven in the female. The female hormone, estradiol (a potent antioxidant), combined with quercetin may offer greater protection against diabetes/ROS-induced vascular reactivity. Therefore, the influence of gender on the response of normoglycemic/diabetic aorta to vasoconstrictors in the presence/absence of quercetin/estradiol, including mechanisms underlying any differences in tissue responses was …

Student Works (2010-2019)
Persistent systemic inflammatory response syndrome is a serious health condition that may lead to multiple organ dysfunction, organ failure, and ultimately death. It leads to both acute inflammation, caused by either infective (microbes or lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) or non-infective (chemicals) sources, and sepsis, an infection caused by a lethal dose of LPS (endotoxemia). These conditions have similar inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, nitric oxide (NO), high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), suggesting that they may result from similar pathogenic mechanisms. Previous studies have investigated the applications of natural products in targeting these inflammatory mediators. Honey, for example, is used …

The crystal structure of human acetylcholinesterase (hAChE) in complex with fasciculin II (2.76 Ǻ) (PDB ID: 1b41) was found to be the most suitable protein for identifying PAS binding ligands in docking studies and was used for virtual screening of about 830 unknown ligands. Twenty-one compounds with a lowest binding energy ranging from -8.7 kcal/mol to -5.6 kcal/mol were selected for testing for AChE inhibitory activity. Four of these compounds were found to inhibit AChE …
