Some objects in the sky vary over time in terms of how much of their energy reaches the earth. Studying how the energy varies, and identifying any periodicities, will give clues as to what is actually happening at the source.

The purpose of this paper is to document the current methods involved in gathering and processing data, specifically on the variable object Markarian 501. The intent is that this will provide a foundation for later work to automate the process.

The mission of the church is to make disciples of all the nations. However the church has lost focus of its mission to reach the lost people outside of the church. Over the last several decades the church has become inwardly focused on itself and its members. This has caused the majority of the churches to be in a serious state of decline to the point that many are on the verge of closing. If the church does not rediscover the biblical model that Jesus gave it, it could lead to the end of the church as we know it.

Despite the increase of the older adult population, there exists a shortage of health care professionals trained to help this population remain independent as long as possible. Ageism, common among younger adults, affects the capacity building of health care for older adults. Research has indicated that increased knowledge about older adults, as well as exposure to the elderly, may alter nursing students' attitudes regarding careers in gerontological nursing. The events surrounding Christ’s theophany as recounted in 3 Nephi describe the creation of a new world, both physically and socially. In particular, chapters 8–18 depict a series of events that are reminiscent of the creation of the earth as described in Genesis and elsewhere. From the all-pervasive darkness experienced during the cataclysmic destruction to the glorious, light-filled arrival of Christ and the institution of new laws and ordinances delivered during his first day among the people, the Book of Mormon text reflects this biblical narrative. Community-based programs have been an important vehicle for the promotion of father involvement in the lives of children over the past decade. There is little available research, however, on the effectiveness of these programs in promoting involvement, or on the experiences of men and staff in building such programs. Despite the emergence of a new generation of federally-funded, state-funded, and locally-funded programs for the fathers and families, a lack of available research means researchers and practitioners run the risk of losing valuable insight to inform better practices for fathering. The U.S. Supreme Court in Eldred v. Ashcroft gave First Amendment importance to the topic of copyright history. In measuring whether Congress has altered the “traditional contours” of copyright such that First Amendment scrutiny must be applied, federal courts—including the Supreme Court in its 2011 Term case Golan v. Holder—must carefully examine the intertwined history of copyright and freedom of the press. The famous but misunderstood case of Donaldson v. While the importance of evaluation program offerings is acknowledge by Extension educators, less emphasis is given to understanding program implementation. Simply assessing program impact without a clear understanding of the degree to which a program was actually implemented can result in inaccurate findings. The effective evaluation of both program impacts and evaluation can provide Extension educators with a more holistic perspective of their programs and an increased ability to identify and disseminate best program practices.

While the development of life skills (e.g., communication, problem solving, etc.) is a commonly targeted youth program outcome, the lack of standardized conceptualizations and instrumentation make it difficult to compare impacts across programs and develop validated best practices. In order to promote a more unified approach to life skill development, literature reviews were conducted for 10 life skill domains to identify common definitions and, if available, appropriate outcome measures. Data were then collected from an ethnically diverse sample (N = 758) of elementary, middle, and high school aged youth for the 10 identified instruments. Analyses were conducted to ascertain the …

After the bankruptcy abuse reform (BAR) took effect in October 2005, foreclosures on subprime mortgages surged nationwide.

Prior to BAR, overly indebted borrowers could file bankruptcy to free up income to pay their mortgage by discharging unsecured debts; BAR eliminated that option for better-off filers through a means test and other requirements, making it more difficult to save one’s home by filing bankruptcy.

A study of the reform suggests that BAR was associated with more subprime foreclosures; BAR’s effects were greater in states with high bankruptcy exemptions, as theory predicts.

Building on the principles of philosophical hermeneutics, Ricoeur (1984) used the concept of narrative to explain how individuals interpret their experiences and make sense of seemingly disconnected elements of life by turning them into the stories. Narrative identities represent the coming together of the stories individuals tell, as well as those told about them by collectivities and by others (Bruner, 1986; Kearney, 2002). These ideas prove particularly relevant to literacy studies because identity influences how individuals make sense of their experiences, including their interactions with texts (McCarthey & Moje, 2000). Moral stress is an increasingly significant concept in business ethics and the workplace environment. This study compares the impact of moral stress with other job stressors on three important employee variables—fatigue, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions—by utilizing survey data from 305 customer-contact employees of a financial institution’s call center. Statistical analysis on the interaction of moral stress and the three employee variables was performed while controlling for other types of job stress as well as demographic variables. The results reveal that even after including the control variables in the statistical models, moral stress remains a statistically significant predictor of increased …

The Information Content Of Annual Earnings Announcements And Mandatory Adoption Of Ifrs, Wayne R. Landsman, Edward L. Maydew, Jacob Thornock

This study examines whether the information content of earnings announcements – abnormal return volatility and abnormal trading volume – increases in countries following mandatory IFRS adoption, and conditions and mechanisms through which increases occur. Findings suggest information content increased in 16 countries that mandated adoption of IFRS relative to 11 that maintained domestic accounting standards, although the effect of mandatory IFRS adoption depends on the strength of legal enforcement in the adopting country. Utilizing a path analysis methodology, we find evidence of three mechanisms through which IFRS adoption increases information content: reducing reporting lag, increasing analyst following, and increasing foreign …

The purpose of this study was to examine how attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control influence adolescents’ intent to participate in active family leisure within the theory of plan behavior framework. Adolescents (N = 472) completed an online questionnaire about their perceptions and actual participation in active family leisure. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. A post-hoc analysis also considered individual leisure and its role on active family leisure. Attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control were significant predictors of intent to participate in active family leisure.

Undirhlíðar quarry is located on the Sveifluhals ridge, a Pleistocene subglacial pillow ridge within the NE-SW trending Krísuvík fissure swarm on the Reykjanes peninsula in Southwest Iceland. The walls of Undirhlíðar quarry provide excellent exposures of the internal architecture of the pillow ridge, yielding insights into the sequence of eruptive and intrusive events that construct subglacial ridges. In particular, the south and east walls expose at least 5 different pillow units and 3 dikes. Also seen in the east wall is a black, glassy breccia unit that appears on both the north and south sections of the east wall. Preliminary …

Deposition on film-cooled turbine components was studied in an accelerated test facility. The accelerated deposition facility seeds a natural-gas burning combustor with finely ground coal ash particulate at 1180 C and 180 m/s (M=0.25). Both cylindrical and shaped holes, with and without thermal barrier coating, were studied over a range of blowing ratios from 0.5 to 4.0. Coolant density ratios were maintained at values from 2.1 to 2.4. Deposition patterns generated with the cylindrical film cooling holes indicated regions of low deposition in the path of the coolant with heightened deposition between film holes. A generalized model for describing the pyrolysis behavior of low-grade fuels is being developed for incorporation into larger combustion simulation models. Light gas and tar yields from black liquor or biomass pyrolysis can be predicted using the chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) model originally developed for coal. The initial approach is to measure the average chemical structures in a black liquor sample using 13C NMR spectroscopy. These chemical structures are then used in pyrolysis model predictions. With few changes from the coal-derived kinetic parameters, the model describes the organic pyrolysis behavior of black liquor samples obtained in a nitrogen-purged furnace. It …

A model was previously developed to describe the decrease in swelling during coal pyrolysis at atmospheric pressure when maximum particle heating rates increase from 10⁴ K/s to 10⁵ K/s. That model included effects of coal type using chemical structure properties. This paper presents results of new experiments to study the effects of elevated pressure and high heating rates on coal pyrolysis. A pressurized flat-flame burner (PFFB) was designed and built to conduct these studies. Diesel engines are an important aspect of our transportation infrastructure, whose performance is greatly affected by the characteristics of the spray from their injectors. Characterization of the injector’s spray is therefore tantamount to clean-running efficient diesel motors. In this study, a ~15 ps pulsed Leopard D-10 laser is used along with an optical Kerr Cell to realize ballistic images of high-delivery-pressure dodecane sprays injected into a quiescent air environment at elevated temperature and pressure. Using CS2 as the Kerr switching media and by optimizing the overlap of the gate and imaging beams, an effective high speed shuttering effect is obtained. …

Elections have remained an integral method of state
judicial appointments for over two centuries. However,
because the Founding Fathers imposed upon judges the
duty to neutrally uphold the U.S. and state constitutions,
state legislatures, per the recommendation of the ABA,
have imposed certain restrictions on the speech and
actions of judicial candidates to maintain impartiality. In
2002, the Supreme Court struck down one category of
these provisions in Republican Party of Minnesota v.
White. The Court declared Minnesota's announce clause,
which prohibited judicial candidates from voicing their
opinions on issues likely to come before the bench, to be an

This Essay explains why U.S. immigration law and
enforcement raises some of the nation's most pressing civil
rights concerns of the twenty-first century. First,
immigration and immigration enforcement implicate a
greater diversity of "people of color," including people of
Latina/o and Asian ancestry, than that encapsulated by
the Black/white paradigm that historically has
dominated thinking about civil rights in the United
States. Second, immigration enforcement implicates civil
rights concerns different in kind than those raised by the
monumental efforts to dismantle Jim Crow and
desegregate American social life, which constituted the

This Essay briefly considers both the current and
optimal role of privacy in employment discrimination
jurisprudence. The recently-passed Genetic Information
Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) is illustrative of a possible
trend in employment discrimination toward privacy. In
particular, GINA includes a prohibition on the use of
genetic information in all employment decisions, affording
a measure of genetic privacy to potential and current
employees.
GINA stands in contrast to prior employment
discrimination statutes, which have often encouraged or
required employers to be knowledgeable of and consider a
particular identity trait through policies such as
reasonable accommodation, affirmative action, and the
disparate impact doctrine. …

Crafting effective and enforceable restrictive covenants
ancillary to employment contracts has befuddled and
vexed attorneys, courts, and businesses in Georgia for
decades. Tracing its development through more than four
hundred years of judicial decisions, Georgia's common law
has grown increasingly contradictory, confusing, and
convoluted. Until the passage of the Restrictive Covenant
Act, Georgia judges grew increasingly hostile to restrictive
covenants; however, they failed to maintain a coherent set
of guidelines for evaluating such covenants. The
Restrictive Covenant Act marks a turning point in Georgia
employment law, and this Note provides a defense of the
Act.
