Parental Problems, Case Plan Requirements, And Service Targeting In Child Welfare Reunification, Amy C. D’Andrade, R. Chambers Jan 2012

Parental Problems, Case Plan Requirements, And Service Targeting In Child Welfare Reunification, Amy C. D’Andrade, R. Chambers

Faculty Publications

Only about half of parents attempting to reunify with their children in foster care succeed in their efforts. Parents are ordered by the court to use treatment services in order to resolve their problems. These treatment services thus play a critical role in reunification, and in fact the use of services appropriately matched to parents' problems has been found to be associated with a greater likelihood of reunification. However, there is little in the literature regarding the specific requirements of reunification case plans, and whether they are accurately targeted at reunifying parents' problems. This mostly descriptive study uses case file …

The Ongoing Assembly Of A Central Cluster Galaxy: Phase-Space Substructures In The Halo Of M87, Aaron J. Romanowsky, J. Strader, J. P. Brodie, C. Mihos, L. R. Spitler, D. A. Forbes, C. Foster, J. A. Arnold Jan 2012

The Ongoing Assembly Of A Central Cluster Galaxy: Phase-Space Substructures In The Halo Of M87, Aaron J. Romanowsky, J. Strader, J. P. Brodie, C. Mihos, L. R. Spitler, D. A. Forbes, C. Foster, J. A. Arnold

Faculty Publications

The halos of galaxies preserve unique records of their formation histories. We carry out the first combined observational and theoretical study of phase-space halo substructure in an early-type galaxy: M87, the central galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We analyze an unprecedented wide-field, high-precision photometric and spectroscopic data set for 488 globular clusters (GCs), which includes new, large-radius Subaru/Suprime-Cam and Keck/DEIMOS observations. We find signatures of two substructures in position-velocity phase space. One is a small, cold stream associated with a known stellar filament in the outer halo; the other is a large shell-like pattern in the inner halo that implies …

Radially Extended Kinematics In The S0 Galaxy Ngc 2768 From Planetary Nebulae, Globular Clusters And Starlight, D. A. Forbes, A. Cortesi, V. Pota, C. Foster, Aaron J. Romanowsky, M. R. Merrifield, J. P. Strader, L. Coccato, N. Napolitano Jan 2012

Radially Extended Kinematics In The S0 Galaxy Ngc 2768 From Planetary Nebulae, Globular Clusters And Starlight, D. A. Forbes, A. Cortesi, V. Pota, C. Foster, Aaron J. Romanowsky, M. R. Merrifield, J. P. Strader, L. Coccato, N. Napolitano

Faculty Publications

There are only a few tracers available to probe the kinematics of individual early-type galaxies beyond one effective radius. Here we directly compare a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe), globular clusters (GCs) and galaxy starlight velocities out to approximately four effective radii, in the S0 galaxy NGC 2768. Using a bulge-to-disc decomposition of a K-band image we assign PNe and starlight to either the disc or the bulge. We show that the bulge PNe and bulge starlight follow the same radial density distribution as the red subpopulation of GCs, whereas the disc PNe and disc starlight are distinct components. We …

Support For The Beginning Special Educator Through High Quality Mentoring, Jennifer C. Madigan, G Scroth-Cavataio Jan 2012

Support For The Beginning Special Educator Through High Quality Mentoring, Jennifer C. Madigan, G Scroth-Cavataio

Faculty Publications

Approximately 50% of school districts across the nation have reported barriers in obtaining highly qualified teachers (U.S. Department of Education, 2009). Beginning special education teachers report that they often feel they lack the prerequisite skills for working with their students, particularly students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Special educators often feel unsupported and overwhelmed by the continuous changes in districts related to No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Additionally, nationwide alternative programs are being developed as a means for special education teachers to clear their credential outside of the university setting. The need for support of these teachers in today's …

Optimizing Reservoir-Stream-Aquifer Interactions For Conjunctive Use And Hydropower Production, Hala Fayad, Richard C. Peralta, Ali Forghani Jan 2012

Optimizing Reservoir-Stream-Aquifer Interactions For Conjunctive Use And Hydropower Production, Hala Fayad, Richard C. Peralta, Ali Forghani

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Conjunctive management of water resources involves coordinating use of surface water and groundwater resources. Very few simulation/optimization (S-O) models for stream-aquifer system management have included detailed interactions between groundwater, streams, and reservoir storage. This paper presents an S-O model doing that via artificial neural network simulators and genetic algorithm optimizer for multiobjective conjunctive water use problems. The model simultaneously addresses all significant flows including reservoir-stream-diversion-aquifer interactions in a more detailed manner than previous models. The model simultaneously maximizes total water provided and hydropower production. A penalty function implicitly poses constraints on state variables. The model effectively finds feasible optimal solutions …
