Chelating Compounds As Potential Flash Rust Inhibitors And Melamine & Aziridine Cure Of Acrylic Colloidal Unimolecular Polymers (Cups), Jigar K. Mistry

Doctoral Dissertations

Waterborne coatings on ferrous substrates usually show flash rusting which decreases the adhesion of the coating and the corrosion products can form a stain. Chelating compounds were investigated as potential flash rust inhibitors. Compounds being evaluated include amine alcohols, diamines and sulfur containing amines. A new corrosion inhibitor 2,5-bis(thioaceticacid)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (H2ADTZ) was synthesized and its performance characteristics were evaluated. It was noted that the observed structure of 1,3,4-thiadiazolidine-2,5-dithione (also known as 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD or DMcT)) has been previously reported in three different tautomeric forms including -dithiol and -dithione. The relative stability of each form as well as the synthesis and characterization …

Characterization Of Expanded Polystyrene (Eps) And Cohesive Soil Mixtures, Nicholas Thomas Rocco Jan 2012

Characterization Of Expanded Polystyrene (Eps) And Cohesive Soil Mixtures, Nicholas Thomas Rocco

Doctoral Dissertations

"Soils modified with expanded polystyrene (EPS) particulates could be used as lightweight fill in a variety of installations including slopes for improved stability, embankments over compressible soils, and to reduce earth pressures next to structures. The addition of low density EPS particulates into soil has a large effect on the mass and volumetric characteristics of these mixtures and their influence on mechanical properties is scarce in the literature. A laboratory characterization program using clay mixed with EPS particulates was conducted for different dosages of EPS. Soils were modified with up to 1.5% EPS by mass, which corresponds to approximately 45% …

An Improved Dipole-Moment Model Based On Near-Field Scanning For Characterizing Near-Field Coupling And Far-Field Radiation From An Ic, Zhenwei Yu Jan 2012

An Improved Dipole-Moment Model Based On Near-Field Scanning For Characterizing Near-Field Coupling And Far-Field Radiation From An Ic, Zhenwei Yu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) problems are critical issues in wireless platform design. The accurate noise model of integrated circuits (ICs) is needed to help designers to diagnose and predict RFI problems. In this dissertation, an improved IC radiated emission model based on near-field measurements is proposed. The regularization technique and the truncated SVD method are employed together with the least square method to calculate the dipole moments from the near-field data. This dipole model has clear physical meaning: the electric and magnetic dipoles represent the voltage and the current in the circuit, respectively. One application of this dipole model is …

X-Ray Crystallography For The Study Of Nickel And Iron Salicylaldimines, Carla Schmiesing Eribal Jan 2012

X-Ray Crystallography For The Study Of Nickel And Iron Salicylaldimines, Carla Schmiesing Eribal

Doctoral Dissertations

"X-ray diffraction of single crystals has developed dramatically over the last century by combining fundamental theories of light, diffraction, and statistics to generate the complete, geometric structure of molecules. The quality of the resulting X -ray structure data are reported in R₁ < 5%, wR2 < 12% and a goodness of fit value of one. This technique was applied specifically to the evaluation of the spin crossover (SCO) compound [Fe(salpm)₂]BF₄ʺ0.5EtOH and how the molecule's geometry changed during a two-step thermal LS-HS conversion. The crystal structure was measured at 100,175,225, and 296 K to yield final R₁ values of 0.047, 0.054, 0.051, and 0.058, respectively. The coordination bond lengths show the spin transitions occur between 100-175K at one crystallographically unique Fe and between 175-225K at the other Fe site. No strong long range interactions are found, suggesting a gradual spin transition. Reaction ofNi(Nalkyl-sal)₂ complexes with Ni(N0₃)₂ form either nickel dimeric, [Ni₃(Rsal)(N0₃)(MeOH)]₂ or trinuclear complexes, Ni₃(Rsal)₄(N0₃)₂. The binuclear complexes, with orthogonal bridging ligands, show overall ferromagnetic interactions. The crystal structures for Ni₃(Rsal)₄(N0₃)₂ from methyl to benzyl were solved and indicate no steric restriction on formation for the series. The trinuclear compounds form an isosceles triangle of metal atoms with the isopropyl analog showing an overall antiferromagnetic interaction with J=+11.386 and J23=-13.891. Lastly, xanthene spirolactam derivatives were structurally analyzed to determine binding modes for their selective and sensitive (µM) detection of metals Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺ and the nerve gas mimic, dichlorophosphate"--Abstract, page iii.

Power Allocation And Linear Precoding For Wireless Communications With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Mingxi Wang Jan 2012

Power Allocation And Linear Precoding For Wireless Communications With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Mingxi Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation proposes a new approach to maximizing data rate/throughput of practical communication system/networks through linear precoding and power allocation. First, the mutual information or capacity region is derived for finite-alphabet inputs such as phase-shift keying (PSK), pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM), and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. This approach, without the commonly used Gaussian input assumptions, complicates the mutual information analysis and precoder design but improves performance when the designed precoders are applied to practical systems and networks. Second, several numerical optimization methods are developed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channels, dual-hop relay networks, and point-to-point MIMO systems. In MIMO …

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation presents a comprehensive study of Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters for Solid State Transformers (SSTs). The first contribution is to propose an ac-ac DAB converter as a single stage SST. The proposed converter topology consists of two active H-bridges and one high-frequency transformer. Output voltage can be regulated when input voltage changes by phase shift modulation. Power is transferred from the leading bridge to the lagging bridge. It analyzes the steady-state operation and the range of zero-voltage switching. It develops a switch commutation scheme for the ac-ac DAB converters. Simulation and experiment results of a scaled down prototype …

Economics And Finance On Time Scales, Julius Severin Heim Jan 2012

Economics And Finance On Time Scales, Julius Severin Heim

Doctoral Dissertations

"This thesis consists of 6 papers that investigate models in economics and finance based on so-called dynamic equations on time scales. The first paper covers multiplier-accelerator models that can be described by linear second-order dynamic equations. The possibility of taxes as well as the possibility of foreign trade is taken into consideration. The second paper discusses cobweb models, which describe cyclical supply and demand in markets, where the supply is determined before the observation of the price. Cobweb models that can be formulated with first-order linear, second-order linear, and nonlinear dynamic equations are being considered. The third and fourth papers …

The main aspects covered include tool evaluation, microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and correlation between processing, microstructure and mechanical properties. Tool performance study was carried out for Ti-6Al-4V alloy with refractory tools made of W-1.1%La₂O₃ and two different grades of WC-Co based materials. The results showed that tool degradation can be attributed to mechanical and chemical interaction with processed material. The nature of tool-workpiece interaction was tool material dependent and influenced the resultant microstructure and weld quality in the stirred …

Identification And Visualization Of Electromagnetic Coupling Paths & Nonlinear Capacitors For Esd Protection, Hongyu Li Jan 2012

Identification And Visualization Of Electromagnetic Coupling Paths & Nonlinear Capacitors For Esd Protection, Hongyu Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"The first topic of this dissertation focuses on developing methods to identify and visualize electromagnetic coupling paths. The basis of the approach is to utilize an analogy between electromagnetic energy flow and fluid flow. This allows one to apply the theories and algorithms of fluid dynamics to electromagnetics and thereby to visualize the electromagnetic energy flow. This in turn can be utilized to identify the electromagnetic coupling path.

The second topic of this dissertation investigates the nonlinearity of capacitors and suggests improved trade-off between electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and data bandwidth by using the antiferroelectric (AFE) capacitors as ESD protection. …

Influence Of Temperature And Microstructural Modification On Formability Of Magnesium Alloys, Arun Mohan Jan 2012

Influence Of Temperature And Microstructural Modification On Formability Of Magnesium Alloys, Arun Mohan

Doctoral Dissertations

"The ß-precipitate free AZ31, ß-precipitate rich AZ91 and a few Mg-Y-Zn alloys were studied to understand the dependence of Mg formability on microstructural condition and temperature. Friction stir processing (FSP) was used to refine the grain size and to obtain desirable distribution of precipitates in the matrix. Since Mg alloys exhibit challenges in achieving room temperature formability, superplastic deformation was utilized. This work focused on high strain rate superplasticity (HSRS, ≥10⁻² s⁻¹) which is more attractive for industrial applications as compared to the slower rates of conventional superplasticity.

Thermally stable fine grains and pinning particles at HSRS temperatures were essential …

Handel's Maser-Solution Theory Of Ball Lightning: The Creation Of Stable Three-Dimensional Cavitons By An Atmospheric Maser With An Open Resonator, Glenn Andrew Carlson Jan 2012

Handel's Maser-Solution Theory Of Ball Lightning: The Creation Of Stable Three-Dimensional Cavitons By An Atmospheric Maser With An Open Resonator, Glenn Andrew Carlson

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation develops details of Handel's Maser-Soliton Theory of ball lightning. The atmosphere between a thundercloud and the Earth's surface is modeled as an idealized stable open resonator with water vapor as the active medium and the thundercloud and Earth's surface as reflecting surfaces. The stable resonator generates a maser beam that narrows to the beam waist at the Earth's surface, which is assumed to be planar. Two candidate rotational transitions are identified within the v₁v₂v₃ = 010 vibrational band of water having wavelengths of 13.9 cm and 1.12 cm, and relevant spectroscopic parameters are retrieved from the HITRAN 2008 …

Imaging The Subsurface In Karst Terrain Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Evgeniy V. Torgashov Jan 2012

Imaging The Subsurface In Karst Terrain Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Evgeniy V. Torgashov

Doctoral Dissertations

"Five electrical resistivity tomography (resistivity) case studies are presented. The first case study, entitled "Springfield Underground", includes ERT data acquired with the purpose of imaging the ceiling of an limestone aggregate mine following simultaneous localized roof failure. The interpretation of the ERT data indicates roof rock failure occurred at the intersection of two previously unmapped near-vertical solution-widened fractures.

At the "Chesterfield Dam" site, resistivity data were acquired to identify the zone of seepage through an earthfill dam. The seepage pathway beneath the dam is interpreted as through a solution-widened fracture, the top of which constituted a segment of the original …

Small Sample Inference For Exponential Survival Times With Heavy Right-Censoring, Noroharivelo Volaniaina Randrianampy Jan 2012

Small Sample Inference For Exponential Survival Times With Heavy Right-Censoring, Noroharivelo Volaniaina Randrianampy

Doctoral Dissertations

"We develop a saddlepoint-based method and several generalized Bartholomew methods for generating confidence intervals about the rate parameter of an exponential distribution in the presence of heavy random right-censoring. Butler's conditional moment generating function formula is used to derive the relevant moment generating function for the rate parameter score function which provides access to a saddlepoint-based bootstrap method. Moment generating functions also play a key role in the generalized Bartholomew methods we develop. Since heavy censoring is assumed, the possible non-existence of the rate parameter maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) is nonignorable. The overwhelming majority of existing methods condition upon the …

Underground Mine Fire Simulation Using Multiscale Modeling Approach, Xichen Zhang Jan 2012

Underground Mine Fire Simulation Using Multiscale Modeling Approach, Xichen Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Underground mine fires have always been a major concern. Past events show that fire poses a severe safety hazard to mine workers, and causes tremendous economic loss to the mine and surrounding communities. A good understanding of the interaction between a mine fire and the mine ventilation network is crucial for effective fire emergency planning and hazard control. Unfortunately our understanding of a fire is still limited due to the complex nature of mine fires and a lack of adequate resource for studying them.

A new multiscale modeling approach coupling conventional 1D and 3D techniques has shown to be a …

Theoretical Studies Of Few-Body Problems, Uttam Chowdhury Jan 2012

Theoretical Studies Of Few-Body Problems, Uttam Chowdhury

Doctoral Dissertations

"Heavy ion collisions with atomic and molecular targets produce many outcomes. The Schrödinger equation is not analytically soluble for more than two mutually interacting particles. As a result, theory must resort to using approximations, the validity of which is determined by comparison with experiment. This work is focused on finding better approximations to describe ionization and capture processes in proton collisions.

Proton-impact ionization of molecular hydrogen is treated as a 3-body problem. Usually the target is treated as an atomic target and the results are multiplied by an ad hoc factor to account for the molecular structure. Measured cross sections …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

In the present study, we had introduced polyurethane (PU) nanofibers that contain hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles (NPs) as a result of an electrospinning process. A simple method that does not depend on additional foreign chemicals had been employed to synthesize HAp NPs through the calcination of bovine bones. Typically, a colloidal gel consisting of HAp/PU had been electrospun to form nanofibers. In this communication, physiochemical aspects of prepared nanofibers were characterized by FE-SEM, TEM and TEM-EDS, which confirmed that nanofibers were well-oriented and good dispersion of HAp NPs, over the prepared nanofibers. Parameters, affecting the utilization of the prepared nanofibers in …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

The conjugate addition of amines to conjugated alkenes (commonly known as aza-Michael reaction) constitutes a key step for the synthesis of various complex natural products, antibiotics, α-amino alcohols and chiral auxiliaries. Ultrasound-induced addition of several amines to α, β-unsaturated ketones, esters and nitriles has been carried out very efficiently in water as well as under solvent-free conditions. No catalysts or solid supports have been used in this method. Remarkable enhancement of reaction rate has been observed in water under ultrasound-induced method. This environmentally benign procedure has provided clean formation of the products with better selectivity.
