Ctm 623: Christian Social Ethics, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
Ctm 623: Christian Social Ethics, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
Syllabi
In this course we will examine selected theological, ethical and missional commitments of the Church of Jesus Christ in our contemporary world. Our chief purpose will be to explore the myriad of ways in which church groups, thinkers, writers and spokespersons have envisaged, understood and interpreted the connection between Christ and culture. These includes the relationship between the “Christ and Caesar”, the word and the world, the interface between Ethics and economics. Topics to be explored include the intersection between race, class and gender, the subject of the various roles of the church under conditions of “postmodernism,” “globalization” and empire. …

The Theology And Ethics Of Martin Luther King, Jr. Ctm 615, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
Syllabi
This class will explore and examine the theological and philosophical foundations of the life, work, and thought of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Attention will be given to King’s understanding of God, Christ, the Church and humanity and how the interplay of these conceptions informed his quest to critique, contest and transform North American civilization and the emerging global order. Students will be asked to probe into King’s identity as a minister of the gospel, explore his role and significance in the history of the Church, and examine his international theology and cultural legacy. In addition, students will be invited …

The Arab Spring (2011) reminded the world both of the power of nonviolence to bring about social change and of the significant costs involved. In this course we will explore the theological and biblical resources in Christianity that support as well as interrogate nonviolent praxis and aggressive nonviolent direct action. We will discuss the spirituality of nonviolence, alternatives to both passivity and violence, justifications of violence and revolution, coercion, responsibility vs. faithfulness, and the pragmatic realities of refusing to kill people in order to improve one's socio-political-economic situation or in order to protect life.
Advocacy And Human Rights, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
Advocacy And Human Rights, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
Syllabi
This course is designed to prepare Christian leaders to identify entry points for engagement in social justice advocacy in the context of the global struggle for human rights/justice. In order to approach such advocacy from a uniquely Christian perspective, participants will examine the Christian witness to the state (at all levels) and evaluate the role followers of Jesus have in walking with the oppressed to seek justice for them. Case studies from a variety of Christian and secular organizations will highlight the various levels at which advocacy can occur.
Differences In Interim Financial Reporting: Gaap Vs. Ifrs, Benjamin Carton
Differences In Interim Financial Reporting: Gaap Vs. Ifrs, Benjamin Carton
Honors Program Theses
This thesis examines the different accounting standards on the topic of interim financial reporting. It answers the question: What are the differences in accounting reporting standards on interim financial reporting between GAAP and IFRS? As the world becomes more globalized, it is likely that GAAP and IFRS will eventually be merged into one universal set of accounting rules. In order to arrive at this combined set of rules, the differences must first be understood and evaluated. Based on existing theory and research, I have argued which specific approach is preferable. I have recommended that the discrete basis be used to …

Quantification of the abundance of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in water and oysters from Rhode Island showed the presence of environmental strains and low levels of potentially pathogenic strains when water temperatures were ≥18°C, with peak levels in late July to early August. A higher abundance of the trh gene than of the tdh gene was observed.
The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplementation On An Experimental Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Dorset Lambs, Brittany Marie De Wolf
The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplementation On An Experimental Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Dorset Lambs, Brittany Marie De Wolf
Open Access Master's Theses
Gastrointestinal parasitism in sheep, particularly lambs, results in substantial economic losses to producers worldwide. Nutritional status has been shown to play an important role in host immune response to parasitic infections. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin E supplementation on an artificial Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) infection in immature lambs. Twenty Dorset lambs were stratified into two treatment groups according to parasite susceptibility. Worm-free lambs, 28 to 32 weeks of age, were supplemented with vitamin E (d-α-tocopherol) for twelve weeks following the recommendations of the National Research Council for minimal daily requirement …

Offshore renewable energy developments (OREDs) are projected to become common in the United States over the next two decades. There are both a need and an opportunity to guide efforts to identify and track impacts to the marine ecosystem resulting from these installations. A monitoring framework and standardized protocols that can be applied to multiple types of ORED would streamline scientific study, management, and permitting at these sites. We propose an adaptive and reactive framework based on indicators of the likely changes to the marine ecosystem due to ORED. We developed decision trees to identify suites of impacts at two …

A Quantitative Comparison Between 1d And 3d Source Inversion Methodologies: Application To The Middle East, Brian M. Covellone, Brian K. Savage
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
We present a quantitative comparison between seismic moment tensor (MT) inversion solutions using 1D and 3D synthetic seismograms at two frequency bands for events in the Middle East, to assess the effects of 3D models on source studies. Complex geology associated with the active continental convergent margin leads to a scarcity of reliable, available data, necessitating a thorough examination of solution stability and robustness to assure an accurate description of sources with well‐characterized source parameters.
Solutions were calculated for 195 events (Mw > 5.5) using a full‐waveform MT inversion matching both phase and amplitude. Seismic data processed at two …
Thoughts On Arbitrator Selection: Why My Father Was (Usually) A Good Choice, Robert H. Smit
Thoughts On Arbitrator Selection: Why My Father Was (Usually) A Good Choice, Robert H. Smit
Faculty Scholarship
Many of the letters, cards and emails of condolence that I received after my father, Professor Hans Smit, passed away last year were from lawyers who had appeared before my father, serving as arbitrator, in international arbitrations. Most said very nice things about my father, some over the top: “worthy of canonization,” “a force of nature,” “Odysseus,” an “icon.” Others were kind but more restrained (coming perhaps from attorneys whose clients fared less well before my father): “creative,” “indomitable,” “fair but scary.” One of my favorites, from a non-native English speaker, was even more neutral, describing my father simply as …

"The Effect Of Basic Financial Literacy On Choice Of College Major": A Study Of Accounting And Education Majors At A Four-Year University In The Midwest, Austin Prescott Foster
Honors Program Theses
Previous studies have been done to gauge the level of financial literacy possessed by various cultural sub-groups, what students in different majors see as the driving forces behind what they want their career to be, and income inequalities between jobs. There is currently a gap in the literature with respect to whether knowing the yearly income of one's parent(s) plays a significant role in major choice. This research was conducted to determine whether disclosure of yearly income by parents influences their child's choice of college major.
Arbitration In The Roberts Supreme Court, George A. Bermann
Arbitration In The Roberts Supreme Court, George A. Bermann
Faculty Scholarship
The Supreme Court’s most recent set of arbitration law rulings — Stolt-Nielsen, S.A. v. AnimalFeeds Int’l, Rent-A-Center West v. Jackson, and AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion — merits all the attention it has been receiving. Taken collectively, the three decisions evidence the powerful commitment of a Supreme Court majority to arbitration as an alternative form of dispute resolution — a commitment so strong as to override important consumer welfare interests. At a minimum, the trilogy erects substantial barriers to the conduct of class arbitration, a form of arbitration that consumer advocates regard as essential to protecting consumer welfare.

Property As Modularity, Thomas W. Merrill
Property As Modularity, Thomas W. Merrill
Faculty Scholarship
Professor Henry Smith’s Property as the Law of Things urges a return to an older conception of property as rights with respect to things – and justifies this in terms of a very new conception of property based on modularity. Throughout, he highlights the importance of information costs in determining the structure of property law, starting with a baseline of in rem rights of exclusion supplemented by governance rules to deal with exceptional situations. I fully agree with his emphasis on the centrality of things in the law of property, the in rem nature of property, the primacy of exclusion …
Automatic Document Classification In Small Environments, Jonathan David Mcelroy
Automatic Document Classification In Small Environments, Jonathan David Mcelroy
Master's Theses
Document classification is used to sort and label documents. This gives users quicker access to relevant data. Users that work with large inflow of documents spend time filing and categorizing them to allow for easier procurement. The Automatic Classification and Document Filing (ACDF) system proposed here is designed to allow users working with files or documents to rely on the system to classify and store them with little manual attention. By using a system built on Hidden Markov Models, the documents in a smaller desktop environment are categorized with better results than the traditional Naive Bayes implementation of classification.
Accountability And The Bureau Of Consumer Financial Protection, Susan Block-Lieb
Accountability And The Bureau Of Consumer Financial Protection, Susan Block-Lieb
Faculty Scholarship
Some industry and political actors oppose the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on the grounds that its institutional design ensures its lack of accountability. Specifically, opponents point to the CFPB’s regulatory and financial independence and to the fact that a single director heads the Bureau rather than a bipartisan panel of commissioners. But to focus on the Bureau’s financial independence and single director misses the distinctive political deal struck when Congress created the CFPB. The CFPB has been uniquely and intentionally structured to insulate it not only from interest group influence and executive interference, but also from congressional control, while …
Effect Of Silicon On Plant Growth And Drought Stress Tolerance, Kaerlek W. Janislampi
Effect Of Silicon On Plant Growth And Drought Stress Tolerance, Kaerlek W. Janislampi
Publications
Silicon is not considered an essential nutrient, but it is typically abundant in soils and can be taken up in large amounts by plants. Silicon is known to have beneficial effects when added to rice and several other plants. These effects include disease and insect resistance, structural fortification, and regulation of the uptake of other ions. In this study, the effect of silicic acid fertilization on the growth and drought tolerance of four crop plants (corn, wheat, soybean, and rice) was analyzed. Plants were studied using three cultivation techniques: 1) hydroponic solution and subjected to salt stress, 2) low-silicon soil-less …
