The Effects Of The Histidine-Alanine-Valine Peptide On The Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Ariel Rogers Jan 2012

The Effects Of The Histidine-Alanine-Valine Peptide On The Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Ariel Rogers

Honors Theses

Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion molecules whose general structure is characterized by three regions: a conserved carboxy-terminal cytoplasmic region, a transmembrane segment and an extracellular region that binds calcium. Cadherins mediate cell to cell adhesion by the formation of homophilic dimers between these extracellular regions, during which one cadherin molecule interacts with another cadherin molecule of the same type. The adhesive interface is a strand-crossover structure between two protomers from adjacent cells. The PA-strand detaches from its own protomer and crosses over to dock a critical tryptophan residue in a hydrophobic partner protomer. Disruption of the formation of the adhesive …

“High School For Scandal: A Modern Screenplay Adaptation Of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’S The School For Scandal”, Bryant Alexander Salmon Jan 2012

“High School For Scandal: A Modern Screenplay Adaptation Of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’S The School For Scandal”, Bryant Alexander Salmon

Honors Theses

For my thesis, I adapted Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s IS**’ century play. The School for Scandal, into a modern-day screenplay with an American high school setting. I not only modified the characters and setting of Sheridan's play, but also changed the format from that of a play, meant for the stage, into an on-screen, feature-length film. Through extensive research on the art of screenwriting, adaptation, and film editing, I created a modem script that shares similar themes, attitudes, and messages with Sheridan’s original play. The works together show parallels and similarities between the British aristocracy of Sheridan’s time and the social …

The Effects Of Cognitive Style And Degree Of Familiarity On Belief In Supernatural Events In Religious Stories, Brandi Elizabeth Soper Jan 2012

The Effects Of Cognitive Style And Degree Of Familiarity On Belief In Supernatural Events In Religious Stories, Brandi Elizabeth Soper

Honors Theses

Two studies assessed whether individual differences in cognitive style, familiarity with religious content, or the inclusion of supernatural details in religious stories had any effect on individual religious beliefs. Two scales intended to indentify individual differences in the need for cognition and the need for cognitive closure were used to cognitive style. Three different types of religious beliefs were measured by Hunt’s (1972) Literal, Anti-literal, Metaphorical religious belief scale and also by a similar scale that measured participants’ belief in actual Biblical stories. The Bible stories manipulated to include either familiar or unfamiliar details as well as supernatural natural details. …

“What Strange Creatures Brothers Are!: An Exploration Of Sibling And Pseudo-Sibling Relationships In Jane Austen’S Novels, Sarah Danielle Thornton Jan 2012

“What Strange Creatures Brothers Are!: An Exploration Of Sibling And Pseudo-Sibling Relationships In Jane Austen’S Novels, Sarah Danielle Thornton

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I compare true sibling relationships with pseudo-sibling relationships in Jane Austen’s novels. I detail why siblings who become friends are generally more successful than friends who attempt to become siblings. With real siblings such as the Bennet sisters, the Dashwood sisters, and Fanny and William Price, there is already a familial obligation that allows them to transform their relationship into something deeper and more meaningful. In the cases of pseudo-siblings such as Catherine Morland and Isabella Thorpe, Emma Woodhouse and Harriet Smith, Fanny Price and Edmund Bertram, and Emma Woodhouse and Mr. Knightley, the transformation from friends …

Deeds Of Death, And Blood': The Introduction Of Sensational Crime Reporting Into Nineteenth Century Penny Press, Marta Catherine Toczylowski Jan 2012

Deeds Of Death, And Blood': The Introduction Of Sensational Crime Reporting Into Nineteenth Century Penny Press, Marta Catherine Toczylowski

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the development of sensational crime reporting in New York in the early-Nineteenth Century. In order to fully understand the introduction of crime reporting into newspapers, I used a significant amount of secondary sources to understand the changes in the city, culture and the history of newspapers. I also took advantage of microfilm of newspapers from the 1830s and 1840s to look firsthand at the development of crime reporting in New York City newspapers. Through studying three significant murders and their coverage in the newspaper, I was able to establish and understand the development of a new type …

The Effectiveness Of Common Language: A Contextual Analysis Of Thomas Paine's Common Sense And Rev. Martin Luther King's 'Letter From A Birmingham Jail', Mack-Arthur Turner, Jr Jan 2012

The Effectiveness Of Common Language: A Contextual Analysis Of Thomas Paine's Common Sense And Rev. Martin Luther King's 'Letter From A Birmingham Jail', Mack-Arthur Turner, Jr

Honors Theses

People are different in several ways; however, we are also share many similarities. For example, we all have ways in which we can communicate others. One of the problems in communicating is connecting with one's intended audience. The way that people construct their ideas and convey them could be effective based on the audiences' ability to understand, interpret, and react. In this paper, I examine the way in which many powerful and influential American leaders have used a particular form of communication to inspire the masses. I analyze the way in which two powerful figures, Thomas Paine and Rev. Martin …

Correlating Taxation And Income Inequality: An Interregional Study, Shantala Fabiola Weiss Jan 2012

Correlating Taxation And Income Inequality: An Interregional Study, Shantala Fabiola Weiss

Honors Theses

The purpose of conducting this study is to identify the nature of the relationship between income inequality and taxation by correlating the taxes and their observed impact on the Gini coefficient. It is hypothesized that the greater tax rates result in greater impact on the Gini coefficient — the independent variable, also called redistribution. Data is run through a regression analysis to determine the strength of the hypothesis. A positive relationship between redistribution and the level of taxation is determined to exist. It is also found that fiscal redistribution is driven primarily by the level of taxation, not by its …

Application Of Operantly Based Single Case Design Methodology In Neurophysiological Feedback, Jenny M. Barnes Jan 2012

Application Of Operantly Based Single Case Design Methodology In Neurophysiological Feedback, Jenny M. Barnes

Honors Theses

This study demonstrates the utility of an ABA multiple baseline design in demonstrating causality, efficacy, and clinical effectiveness in neurofeedback studies. An operantly based multiple baseline (baseline, intervention, return to baseline] design was utilized. The results demonstrate the empirical and clinical utility ofwithin-subject design methodologies, as an alternative to large N group comparison designs, in both basic research and applied clinical studies. The data also contain effect size statistics to make findings available for meta-analytic studies.

Angiotensin Ii: A Potential Link Between Inflammation And Hypertension In Sle, Khush Singh Aujla Jan 2012

Angiotensin Ii: A Potential Link Between Inflammation And Hypertension In Sle, Khush Singh Aujla

Honors Theses

The disease Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory, autoimmune disorder that primarily affects women during their reproductive years. Women with SLE are at a greater risk of developing hypertension, which increases their risk of mortality from a cardiac related event. A proposed mechanism for SLE hypertension suggests that inflammation in the kidneys causes renal dysfunction, presumably resulting in less water excretion, increased plasma volume, and thus high blood pressure. This experiment tests the hypothesis that the T-cells from a mouse model of SLE hyper secrete the inflammatory cytokines IL-17, IL-10, and IFN- y, and are more sensitive to the …

Defects In Acute Rsponses To Tlr4 In Btk-Deficient Mice Result In Impaired Dendritic Cell-Induced Ifn-Γ Production By Natural Killer Cells, Joan Ní Gabhann, Shaun Spence, Claire Wynne, Siobhán Smith, Jennifer C. Byrne, Barbara Coffey, Kevin Stacey, Adrien Kissenpfennig, James A. Johnston, Caroline A. Jefferies

Articles

This study defines a critical role for Btk in regulating TLR4-induced crosstalk between antigen presenting cells (APCs) and natural killer (NK) cells. Reduced levels of IL-12, IL- 18 and IFN-γ were observed in Btk-deficient mice and ex vivo generated macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs) following acute LPS administration, whilst enhanced IL-10 production was observed. In addition, upregulation of activation markers and antigen presentation molecules on APCs was also impaired in the absence of Btk. APCs, by virtue of their ability to produce IL-12 and IL-18, are strong inducers of NK-derived IFN-γ. Co-culture experiments demonstrate that Btk-deficient DCs were unable to …

Bi-Lateral Changes To Hippocampal Cholesterol Levels During Epileptogenesis And In Chronic Epilepsy Following Focal-Onset Status Epilepticus In Mice, Steve Meaney, Maura Heverin, Tobias Engel, Eva Jimenez-Mateosa, Reza Al-Aaudia, David Henshall Jan 2012

Bi-Lateral Changes To Hippocampal Cholesterol Levels During Epileptogenesis And In Chronic Epilepsy Following Focal-Onset Status Epilepticus In Mice, Steve Meaney, Maura Heverin, Tobias Engel, Eva Jimenez-Mateosa, Reza Al-Aaudia, David Henshall

Articles

Brain cholesterol homeostasis has been shown to be disrupted in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases. Investigations in animal models of seizure-induced brain injury suggest that brain cholesterol levels are altered by prolonged seizures (status epilepticus) and are a feature of the pathophysiology of temporal lobe epilepsy. The present study measured hippocampal sterol levels in a model of unilateral hippocampal injury triggered by focal-onset status epilepticus, and in chronically epileptic mice. Status epilepticus was induced by intra-amygdala microinjection of kainic acid and ipsilateral and contralateral hippocampus analyzed. No significant changes were found for ipsilateral or contralateral hippocampal levels …

The most commonly used test for monitoring heparin therapy is the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). The response of available aPTT reagents to heparin varies significantly. The aim of this study was to highlight the differences between aPTT reagents stored in a dried format to select the most suitable formulations to be used for the development of point-of-care diagnostic devices used for monitoring of unfractionated heparin dose response.

METHODS:

Ten reagents were analysed in terms of their performance in liquid and in dried form after storage for 24 h and 14 days. Performance was assessed by measurement of the clotting …

Theism And Psychological Science: A Call For Rapprochement, Michael J. Vogel, Tyler A. Gerdin, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2012

Theism And Psychological Science: A Call For Rapprochement, Michael J. Vogel, Tyler A. Gerdin, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The authors offer two arguments for the inclusion of theism in natural science. First, an argument against excluding theism is offered. Though early roots of science promoted a view that it is a way to accumulate knowledge that is untainted by presuppositions and traditions, postmodern critiques call this into question. Scientists have sometimes rejected religion as a context-dependent, tradition-based way of knowing, yet science itself is also context-dependent and tradition-based. Second, an argument for including theism in psychological is offered. Theistic beliefs are relevant insofar as they are part of human experience for many, they represent a form of human …

Counseling And Psychotherapy Within And Across Faith Traditions (Chapter 17 In The Oxford Handbook Of The Psychology Of Spirituality), Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2012

Counseling And Psychotherapy Within And Across Faith Traditions (Chapter 17 In The Oxford Handbook Of The Psychology Of Spirituality), Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This chapter begins with general considerations for religiously and spiritually oriented psychotherapy, including the importance of seeing religion and spirituality as d.imensions of cultural diversity, considering clients' welfare and autonomy, and maintaining competence. Three types of religious and spiritual intervention approaches are then discussed: assimilative, accommodative, and collaborative. Assimilative approaches introduce spiritual interventions or considerations into a standard psychotherapy approach. Accommodative approaches involve adapting a standard psychotherapy regimen to include religious or spiritual matters. Collaborative approaches entail a mental health professional and religious leader working in tandem for the sake of clients' welfare. Next, specific issues related to counseling within …

Spiritual Well-Being Scale: Mental And Physical Health Relationships (Chapter 48 Of Oxford Textbook Of Spirituality In Healthcare), Raymond F. Paloutzian, Rodger K. Bufford, Ashley J. Wildman Jan 2012

Spiritual Well-Being Scale: Mental And Physical Health Relationships (Chapter 48 Of Oxford Textbook Of Spirituality In Healthcare), Raymond F. Paloutzian, Rodger K. Bufford, Ashley J. Wildman

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The existence of this handbook documents the recent increase in research on and practical attention to the role of spirituality in healthcare. One essential companion to the concept of spirituality is spiritual well-being (SWB).[1] That is, although the degree and type of spirituality per se can no doubt play an important role in how well a person faces the dilemmas related to health issues,[2,3] the degree to which a person perceives or derives a sense of wellbeing from that spirituality may be equally or more important. In this connection, SWB is an outcome indicator, or barometer, of how well a …

Growing Old (From Dirt And The Good Life), Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "After a night interrupted a dozen times or so with a sharp sciatica pain, I felt pleased to see the old digital clock approaching 8:00 as I reached my final awakening-much later than our normal rising and only possible on a sabbatical year. Lisa got out of bed first, rustling the sheets on her side of the bed as I said, "Happy anniversary." Today is our thirty-second. Surprisingly, she didn't respond. She's never been the type to offer silence in response to my words-even when annoyed at me-and I couldn't think of any reason for her to be annoyed …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum is a school-based program developed to prevent and reduce aggressive behavior. Three separate age-appropriate curricula are available: preschool/kindergarten level, elementary level, and middle school level. Designed to be teacher-friendly and convenient for classroom use, the curricula aim to prevent and decrease aggression by helping children develop habits of prosocial behavior and thought. Instructional strategies are evidence-based and are built on a broad foundation of research. In addition, these curricula employ strategies that have been found to be effective for prevention of delinquency and substance abuse, and to support children's academic success. Each of the …

Finding Our Way In Transition, Emily Hervey Jan 2012

Finding Our Way In Transition, Emily Hervey

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

As I sat on an airplane headed back to the US after three years in Central Asia, I stared out the window, praying and wondering what was ahead. The words from Jeremiah 29:11 then clearly came to mind: “I know the plans I have in mind for you,” declares the LORD, “they are plans for peace, not disaster, to give you a future filled with hope.” That passage has been a comfort so many times when I did not know what was ahead, yet found hope in God’s plan. I find it interesting that this verse was part of a …

Exploring Resilience: Strengths Of Trafficking Survivors In Cambodia, Glori G. Gray, Lilia E. U. Luna, Winston Seegobin

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Western literature provides an array of information regarding resilience within at-risk youth. Resilience research within non-Western contexts, and more specifically with exploited youth, is more limited. Despite exploitation, some youth develop a hardy ability to overcome adversity, allowing them more mastery over their environments and even increased psychological steadfastness. This project involved exploring the protective factors of resilience and psychological functioning in Cambodian youth, specifically a group of 24 survivors of sexual trafficking and another group of 24 rural youth without reported exploitation. The ages of participants ranged from J 3 to 22 years, with the average age being 15.62 …
