Nothing As Practical As A Good Theory? The Theoretical Basis Of Hiv Prevention Interventions For Young People In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review, Kristien Michielsen, Matthew Chersich, Marleen Temmerman, Tessa Dooms, Ronan Van Rossem

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

This paper assesses the extent to which HIV prevention interventions for young people in sub-Saharan Africa are grounded in theory and if theory-based interventions are more effective. Three databases were searched for evaluation studies of HIV prevention interventions for youth. Additional articles were identified on websites of international organisations and through searching references. 34 interventions were included; 25 mentioned the use of theory. Social Cognitive Theory was most prominent (n = 13), followed by Health Belief Model (n = 7), and Theory of Reasoned Action/Planned Behaviour (n = 6). These cognitive behavioural theories assume that cognitions drive sexual behaviour. Reporting …

Sexual Coercion Among In-School Adolescents In Rwanda: Prevalence And Correlates Of Victimization And Normative Acceptance, Els Van Decraen, Kristien Michielsen, Sarah Herbots, Ronan Van Rossem, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to sexual coercion, as victim as well as perpetrator. This paper aims to adapt sexual and reproductive health interventions to the reality of young people’s sexuality and relationships. This study assesses the prevalence of forced sex, characteristics of victims and norms regarding sexual coercion among Rwandan adolescents. A survey was completed by 285 senior secondary school students and four focus groups were conducted. Of sexually active respondents, 15.5% (95% CI = [15.1 – 15.9]) reported forced sexual intercourse. Sexual victimization was associated with being female and having (had) a concurrent sexual relationship. Acceptance of sexual coercion …

Is There A Role For The Quantification Of Rrm1 And Ercc1 Expression In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma?, Matias E Valsecchi, Thomas Holdbrook, Benjamin E Leiby, Edward Pequignot, Susan J Littman, Charles Yeo, Jonathan Brody, Angieszka Witkiewicz

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: RRM1 and ERCC1 overexpression has been extensively investigated as potential predictive markers of tumor sensitivity to conventional chemotherapy agents, most thoroughly in lung cancer. However, data in pancreatic cancer are scarce.

METHODS: We investigated the mRNA and protein expression of ERCC1 and RRM1 by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry (IHC) in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded pancreatic ductal carcinoma (PDA) tissues. The primary outcome investigated was the association between RRM1 and ERCC1 expression and overall survival (OS) or disease-free survival (DFS).

RESULTS: A total of 94 patients with resected PDA were included in this study. Most of them (87%) received gemcitabine based chemotherapy. Data …

Atmospheric Mass Loss And Orbital Evolution Of Exoplanets, Nicole Thom Jan 2012

Atmospheric Mass Loss And Orbital Evolution Of Exoplanets, Nicole Thom

Theses and Dissertations

The distributions of the semi-major axes and masses of close-in planets (planets within 0.1 AU of their host stars) provide clues to their origin. Over billions of years, the mass and orbital distance are constantly evolving. Tidal forces and atmospheric mass loss, driven by stellar ultraviolet flux, can influence the observed planetary distribution. Coupling these effects can lead to a greater understanding of how the observed distribution was shaped and may help to explain the gaps in the distribution of mass and semi-major axes for these close-in planets.

To study the effects of mass loss and tides, we applied a …

Analysis Of The Role Of Amphetamine In The Induction Of Changes In Histone Modifications Of Dopaminergic Pathway Genes, Amritendu Chakraborty Jan 2012

Analysis Of The Role Of Amphetamine In The Induction Of Changes In Histone Modifications Of Dopaminergic Pathway Genes, Amritendu Chakraborty

Theses and Dissertations

Amphetamine and cocaine has long been known as drug of abuse. These drugs impart their physiological manifestations by regulating the reward circuitry of the brain which is controlled primarily by the dopaminergic pathway where they control the release of dopamine. It has been found that repeated cocaine administration changes histone acetylation patterns at the promoter sequences of several important genes. Sirtuin proteins are histone deactylases that regulate important biological functions have also been found to be elevated in the nucleus accumbens after cocaine administration. Although there have been several studies that have tried to elucidate the mode of action of …

Multisexual Identities And Mental Health: Mitigating Factors Of Minority Stress, Kimberly Marie Jorgensen Jan 2012

Multisexual Identities And Mental Health: Mitigating Factors Of Minority Stress, Kimberly Marie Jorgensen

Theses and Dissertations

Much of the current literature about sexual minorities examines the experiences of lesbian- and gay-identified individuals. The current study was designed to facilitate increased understanding of sexuality for people who have multi-gendered attractions and sexual identities (e.g., bisexual, queer). This work extends beyond discrete binary categories and labels for sexual orientation, such as straight, gay, and lesbian. In the current examination of this expanded category, labeled as multisexual, it becomes important to shift not only the conceptualization of sexual orientation but also the nature of minority stress, from examining homophobia and heterosexism, to biphobia and monosexism. Under circumstances when an …

Assessment Of Nasa Giss Cmip5 Modele Simulated Clouds And Toa Radiation Budgets Using Satellite Observations Over The Southern Mid-Latitudes, Ryan Evan Stanfield

Theses and Dissertations

Past, current, and future climates have been simulated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) ModelE Global Circulation Model (GCM) and summarized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report (IPCC, AR4). New simulations from the updated CMIP5 version of the NASA GISS ModelE GCM were recently released to the public community during the summer of 2011 and will be included in the upcoming IPCC AR5 ensemble of simulations. Due to the recent nature of these simulations, they have not yet been extensively validated against observations. To assess the NASA GISS-E2-R …

A Western Range Extension For Caprella Scaura (Amphipoda: Caprellidae) In The Aransas Bay Ecosystem, Texas, Nicholas L. Ahrens, Faye P. Grubbs Jan 2012

A Western Range Extension For Caprella Scaura (Amphipoda: Caprellidae) In The Aransas Bay Ecosystem, Texas, Nicholas L. Ahrens, Faye P. Grubbs

Gulf and Caribbean Research

During March 2009, the skeleton shrimp Caprella scaura and Paracaprella tenuis (Amphipoda: Caprellidae) were collected from several locations throughout the Aransas Bay, Texas ecosystem from Texas Parks and Wildlife fishery—independent trawl and oyster dredge samples. This is a western range expansion for C. scaura; P. tenuis has been reported from this area before. Both species were exclusively associated with a bryozoan, Bugula neritina. Densities of both species ranged between 0.1–3.4 individuals per gram of attached bryozoans. A reproductive population is likely established since several sizes, including adult males and gravid females, were observed. No caprellids were observed after …

Evidence Of Spawning Capable Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus) Off The Louisiana Coast, William Stein Iii, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, James S. Franks, Martin T. O'Connell Jan 2012

Evidence Of Spawning Capable Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus) Off The Louisiana Coast, William Stein Iii, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, James S. Franks, Martin T. O'Connell

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Despite the fact that the tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) is a popular sport fish in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM; Ault et al. 2008), little is known of its spawning behavior. Spawning M. atlanticus have never been documented and fertilized eggs have not been observed in situ (Ault et al. 2008). While it has been suggested that adult M. atlanticus move to deep water off the southwest coast of Florida and into the Yucatan Channel to spawn, the actual locations of spawning grounds remain unknown (Smith 1980, Crabtree et al. 1995, Crabtree et al. 1997). Distribution patterns of larvae …

Efficacies Of Fenbendazole And Albendazole In The Treatment Of Commercial Turkeys Artificially Infected With Ascaridia Dissimilis, Jessica Perkins, Tom Yazwinski, Chris Tucker Jan 2012

Efficacies Of Fenbendazole And Albendazole In The Treatment Of Commercial Turkeys Artificially Infected With Ascaridia Dissimilis, Jessica Perkins, Tom Yazwinski, Chris Tucker

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The goal of this research was to determine the extent of resistance that turkey roundworms, Ascaridia dissimilis, have developed to anti-parasitic chemicals used in commercial poultry operations. Roundworm infections in turkeys have resulted in monetary losses for the poultry industry for years, generally due to poor feed conversion. The infection itself is subclinical and many turkeys have a light to moderate worm burden. Since parasitisms are light, this leads to the infections being noticed only during processing. Ascaridia dissimilis infections consist of adult worms and developing larvae with the latter comprising most of the worm burden and causing the most …

Groupoids, Imaginaries And Internal Covers, Ehud Hrushovski Jan 2012

Groupoids, Imaginaries And Internal Covers, Ehud Hrushovski

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let T be a first-order theory. A correspondence is established between internal covers of models of T and definable groupoids within T. We also consider amalgamations of independent diagrams of algebraically closed substructures, and find strong relation between covers, uniqueness for 3-amalgamation, existence of 4-amalgamation, imaginaries of T^\si, and definable groupoids. As a corollary, we describe the imaginary elements of families of finite-dimensional vector spaces over pseudo-finite fields.

On Normality Of Meromorphic Functions With Multiple Zeros And Sharing Values, Youming Wang Jan 2012

On Normality Of Meromorphic Functions With Multiple Zeros And Sharing Values, Youming Wang

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we study the problem of normal families of meromorphic functions concerning shared values. Let F be a family of meromorphic functions in the plane domain D \subseteq C and n be a positive integer. Let a, b be two finite complex constants such that a \neq 0. If n \geq 3 and f + a(f')^n and g + a(g')^n share b in D for every pair of functions f, g \in F, then F is normal in D. And some examples are provided to show the result is sharp.
