Contracted Hospitalists And Non-Contracted Hospitalists: Impact On Hospital Cost And Quality Care Outcomes, Kathleen L. Adams Jan 2012

Contracted Hospitalists And Non-Contracted Hospitalists: Impact On Hospital Cost And Quality Care Outcomes, Kathleen L. Adams

All ETDs from UAB

Background Changes in the health care delivery and policy environment are creating increased need for attention to health care costs and efficiency. Hospitals need to develop and implement oversight processes to effectively control costs and provide quality services. It is common for hospitals to contract with physician groups to staff various departments throughout the facility. Hospitalists are the most recent addition to hospital rosters. While some hospitals hire hospitalists directly as employees, others contract with physician groups to provide hospitalist services. The purpose of this study was to compare the potential benefits for hospitals that contracted with a hospitalist group …

Exploring Health Disparities For Children In The City Of Milwaukee, Mark Edwin Anderson Jan 2012

Exploring Health Disparities For Children In The City Of Milwaukee, Mark Edwin Anderson

All ETDs from UAB

This study investigated whether school-based oral health programs as a public policy intervention increased dental sealant applications among children from low-income families and minorities in public schools in inner city Milwaukee. By using a difference-in-differences analysis, we examined pre-post time frames, 2001-2003 and 2008-2009, to determine sealant application usage in public schools in nine inner city Milwaukee zip codes after the intervention of a public policy initiative to expand school-based oral health programs with the expressed intent of increasing placement of dental sealants in children at high risk for dental decay and disease. Results of a binary logistic regression revealed …

Finding A Cure For Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus (Veev) Infection: The Search For The Antiviral Genes And Vaccine Development., Svetlana Atasheva Jan 2012

Finding A Cure For Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus (Veev) Infection: The Search For The Antiviral Genes And Vaccine Development., Svetlana Atasheva

All ETDs from UAB

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is a re-emerging virus that causes a severe and often fatal disease in equids and humans. To date, despite a continuous public health threat, no vaccines or antiviral drugs against VEEV infection have been developed for human use. In this study we took advantage of accumulated knowledge of capsid protein function in viral replication, assembly and virus-host interactions. Besides being an integral part of the virion, capsid protein is the major determinant of VEEV pathogenesis. This protein is cytotoxic and induces cellular transcriptional shutoff as a countermeasure to the cellular antiviral response. We introduced targeted …

Synthesis And Properties Of Poly(Α-Hydroxy Acid)S With Poly(Ether) Cores, Jeffrey Larry Atkinson Jan 2012

Synthesis And Properties Of Poly(Α-Hydroxy Acid)S With Poly(Ether) Cores, Jeffrey Larry Atkinson

All ETDs from UAB

Novel biomaterials composed of a polyglycidol backbone with polyester branches consisting of poly(lactide) or poly(lactide-co-glycolide) are synthesized and characterized. Thermal stability, mechanical properties, and hydrolytic degradation of these polymers are essential factors of their processing and practical application. Data from the analysis of the polymer properties is used to determine structure-property relationships for the branched polyesters. Poly(glycidol) (PG), poly(glycidol)-g-L-lactide (PG-g-La), and poly(glycidol)-g-glycolide (PG-g-Gly) are synthesized for evaluation of the core material and simple branched systems. Thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and isoconversional kinetic analysis are used to evaluate the kinetic and mechanistic aspects of nonoxidative thermal degradation. It is found …

Fmri Investigation Of Intertemporal Discounting In Schizophrenia, Kathy Burton Avsar Jan 2012

Fmri Investigation Of Intertemporal Discounting In Schizophrenia, Kathy Burton Avsar

All ETDs from UAB

Schizophrenia is most recognizable by positive symptoms of hallucinations and delusions, but the cognitive deficits and negative symptoms contribute more to functional deficits. The delay discounting (DD) task, with choices between a small immediate reward and a larger delayed reward, tapping into both executive function and reward processing, may prove useful in identifying cognitive and reward processing abnormalities relevant to schizophrenia. In the present study, we used the discounting parameter, k, to assess whether patients with schizophrenia preferred more immediate rewards than healthy controls. We used a model fit statistic, R2, as a measure of choice consistency, quantified using a …

Exonerations In The United States, 1989-2012: Report By The National Registry Of Exonerations, Samuel R. Gross, Michael Shaffer Jan 2012

Exonerations In The United States, 1989-2012: Report By The National Registry Of Exonerations, Samuel R. Gross, Michael Shaffer

Other Publications

This report is about 873 exonerations in the United States, from January 1989 through February 2012. Behind each is a story, and almost all are tragedies. The tragedies are not limited to the exonerated defendants themselves, or to their families and friends. In most cases they were convicted of vicious crimes in which other innocent victims were killed or brutalized. Many of the victims who survived were traumatized all over again, years later, when they learned that the criminal who had attacked them had not been caught and punished after all, and that they themselves may have played a role …

The Emergence Of International Property Law, John G. Sprankling Jan 2012

The Emergence Of International Property Law, John G. Sprankling

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

This Article explores a new field: international property law. International law increasingly creates, regulates, or otherwise affects the property rights of individuals, business entities, and other non-state actors. Globalization, democratic reforms, technology, and human rights principles have all contributed to this development.

The Article begins by examining the unsuccessful effort to create a broad, internationally-enforceable human right to property during the second half of the twentieth century. Despite this failure, international property law doctrines have evolved in specialized contexts over recent decades. The Article demonstrates that these doctrines stem from four sources: (a) regulation of the global commons; (b) …

Strong Self-Limitation Promotes The Persistence Ofrare Species, G. M. Yenni, P. B. Adler, S.K. Morgan Ernest Jan 2012

Strong Self-Limitation Promotes The Persistence Ofrare Species, G. M. Yenni, P. B. Adler, S.K. Morgan Ernest

Biology Faculty Publications

Theory has recognized a combination of niche and neutral processes each contributing, with varying importance, to species coexistence. However, long-term persistence of rare species has been difficult to produce in trait-based models of coexistence that incorporate stochastic dynamics, raising questions about how rare species persist despite such variability. Following recent evidence that rare species may experience significantly different population dynamics than dominant species, we use a plant community model to simulate the effect of disproportionately strong negative frequency dependence on the long-term persistence of the rare species in a simulated community. This strong self-limitation produces long persistence times for the …

An Improved Competitive Inhibition Enzymatic Immunoassay Method For Tetrodotoxin Quantification, James P. Strange, Becky L. Williams, Susannah S. French Jan 2012

An Improved Competitive Inhibition Enzymatic Immunoassay Method For Tetrodotoxin Quantification, James P. Strange, Becky L. Williams, Susannah S. French

Biology Faculty Publications

Quantifying tetrodotoxin (TTX) has been a challenge in both ecological and medical research due to the cost, time and training required of most quantification techniques. Here we present a modified Competitive Inhibition Enzymatic Immunoassay for the quantification of TTX, and to aid researchers in the optimization of this technique for widespread use with a high degree of accuracy and repeatability.

Interfamily Variation In Amphibian Early Life-History Traits: Raw Material For Natural Selection?, Gareth R. Hopkins, Brian G. Gall, Susannah S. French, Edmund D. Brodie Jr. Jan 2012

Interfamily Variation In Amphibian Early Life-History Traits: Raw Material For Natural Selection?, Gareth R. Hopkins, Brian G. Gall, Susannah S. French, Edmund D. Brodie Jr.

Biology Faculty Publications

The embryonic development and time to hatching of eggs can be highly adaptive in some species, and thus under selective pressure. In this study, we examined the underlying interfamily variation in hatching timing and embryonic development in a population of an oviparous amphibian, the rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa). We found significant, high variability in degree of embryonic development and hatching timing among eggs from different females. Patterns of variation were present regardless of temperature. We also could not explain the differences among families by morphological traits of the females or their eggs. This study suggests that the variation necessary for natural …

The Stories They Tell: An International Focus Group Study Identifying Families’ Communication About Alcohol, Marie Haverfield, J. Theiss Jan 2012

The Stories They Tell: An International Focus Group Study Identifying Families’ Communication About Alcohol, Marie Haverfield, J. Theiss

Faculty Publications

This study sought to explore how alcoholism is experienced and communicated in the context of the family. Drawing on Fitzpatrick and Ritchie’s (1994) Family Communication Patterns Theory, this study compared features of conversation and conformity in family interactions about alcoholism in German and American culture. This cross-cultural comparison provides insight to the cultural extremes of alcohol related behavior and how such behaviors may or may not affect communication in the family.
