In 1972, President Nixon visited the People’s Republic of China in an attempt to redefine U.S.-China relations. Since that time, China has progressed in standing and prevalence and is becoming an increasingly powerful influence in the Asian-Pacific region. The U.S. influence and presence in the Asian-Pacific region has been diminished by China’s growing power. This shift in roles will continue to influence U.S.-China relations along with U.S. relations in the Asian- Pacific area. Using the balance of power theory and balance of threat theory, I will analyze the circumstances surrounding the U.S.-China rapprochement from 1970-1972. An understanding of the events …

Recent experiences in Africa and Eastern Europe indicate that private security can be a useful tool for building state capacity. Since the end of the Cold War, private security has been extensively utilized by states. These that specialize in personal and site protection which include mainstream military tasks, such as transportation, intelligence gathering, medical skills, logistical support, and even direct combat involvement. This dissertation contributes to the current body of knowledge by examining the consequences of the use of private force to enhance state capacity in four contemporary cases in which the United States government has undertaken state-building operations. A Method For Exploring Optimization Formulation Space In Conceptual Design, Shane Keawe Curtis

Formulation space exploration is a new strategy for multiobjective optimization that facilitates both divergent searching and convergent optimization during the early stages of design. The formulation space is the union of all variable and design objective spaces identified by the designer as being valid and pragmatic problem formulations. By extending a computational search into the formulation space, the solution to an optimization problem is no longer predefined by any single problem formulation, as it is with traditional optimization methods. Instead, a designer is free to change, modify, and update design objectives, variables, and constraints and explore design alternatives without requiring …

This paper is based off of a collection of Vietnam War letters that I processed at the Western Michigan University Archives and Regional History Collections. They are all written to a local woman, Carol, by five soldiers, named Mitch, Dennis, Ron, Willis, and Kenneth. Carol’s responses are not included in the collection.

Carol, Mitch, and Willis all graduated in the same class from Vicksburg High School. From using databases and yearbooks, I learned that Carol knew each of the soldiers from organizations they both belonged in. Although I could not exactly determine how Carol knew Ron and Kenneth, it seems …

Coffee Markets, Smallholder Credit, And Landscape Change In The Bolaven Plateau Region, Laos, Matthew Toro

Open Access Theses

This thesis analyzes relationships between global coffee prices, international development schemes, local trading and credit systems, and landscape dynamics in the Bolaven Plateau region of southern Laos. The region is a complex and rapidly changing resource space serving principally as the productive, socio-ecological base of the Lao coffee commodity chain. Fieldwork conducted there in 2009 entailed in-depth interviews and quasi-survey semi-structured interviews. These latter interviews yielded a database of 503 detailed loan/debt histories for 192 coffee smallholder households between 1987 and 2008. These data reveal a socio-economically exploitative cycle of coffee production, chronic indebtedness, and poverty at the base of …
