In the spring of 1760, the British garrison at Québec, commanded by James Murray, found itself the target of a French army intent upon the recapture of the colonial capital. Led by the exceptionally able François de Levis, the French hoped to surprise Murray’s outnumbered and isolated army, but even as the French embarked at Montreal on 20 May, Murray was writing that he had “received certain intelligence” of French preparations and had taken appropriate precautions. This article aims briefly to describe the significance and evolution of military mining as a battlefield tactic during the Great War, with special reference to the role these underground operations played in the greatest success of Canadian arms—the capture of Vimy Ridge.

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

This paper explores the public performance of memory for the purposes of healing and justice in post-war Sierra Leone. Following South Africa, truth commissions have commonly incorporated the public performances of truth-telling theorized within peacebuilding and transitional justice literature to provide psychological healing and postwar justice. Significant recent scholarship has, however, questioned the practical efficacy and cultural relevance of such processes in culturally diverse settings. Scholars such as Brandon Hamber, David Mendeloff, Tim Kelsall, and Rosalind Shaw have argued that there is no proof that such presentations heal individuals, nor provide a sense of justice. The main source of bilateral instability and potential conflict in South America consists of those factors to which most international relations theorists (Holsti, Hoffmann, Keohane & Nye) have paid the least attention, namely, issues of memory, identity, and nationalism. The potential for inter-state conflict (not necessarily violent) between Bolivia and Chile largely involve disputes over history and territory, linked as they are to the unresolved legacy of the War of the Pacific: a landlocked Bolivia. The “history disputes” that surround Bolivia´s lack of sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean, continue to be a source of instability for the southern cone. …

Milton's Moral History: Tracing Diachronic Continuity In Paradise Lost, Daniel Geoffrey Emerson

This thesis starts from the observation that the plot of Paradise Lost is driven by changes in the moral universe. First, I attempt to trace the progression of Christian moral history by identifying distinct normative moral structures and acknowledging the gaps created by the structures' incompatibilities. Then, history is organized by looking through Thomas Kuhn's paradigmatical model of history. Kuhn's historical model, however, fragments th timeline but reveals a theological anxiety about the Continuity of moral law. I argue that continuity is restored in the poem by exhibiting the components of moral agency that Milton defines in Areopagitica. In this …

By early 1915, the Habsburg Monarchy faced a self-inflicted strategic crisis of the first magnitude. Under thecommand of the ever fallible Conrad von Hötzendorf, successive Austrian offensives against the Serbs andthe Russians in 1914 had been outright failures. In both cases, Conrad had attempted to shift between frontswith insufficient resources and succeeded only in grinding the life out of the fragile, undermanned, andunderequipped Habsburg Army. As a result, the Russians were able to lay siege to the critical Austrian fortificationof Przemyśl, which guarded the great Hungarian Plain against Russian invasion. President Barack Obama has clearly placed himself in the just war tradition, and so we may ask how successful has President Obama in fact been as just war theorist? His justification of the recent NATO intervention in Libya shows that the record is at best mixed. More broadly, Obama’s failure as just war theorist is at least partly a failure of the theory itself: as long as this theory does not address issues of “just military preparedness,” it will fail to place real constraints on American resort to military force.

The Micro-Macro Legal Continuum And The Levels Of Law, William Rhee

What is the relationship between individual and collective legal action? How does a single lawsuit, a single statute, a solitary administrative regulation, or a specific executive order affect legal doctrine? More generally, what about the broader law? In an attempt to answer that question, this essay articulates two interrelated concepts: the micro-macro legal continuum and the levels of law. First, the micro-macro legal continuum demonstrates how the type of law can affect legal actors' professional judgment and decision-making. Paralleling the division between microeconomics and macroeconomics, the porous boundary between micro law and macro law is dictated by different legal roles. …

Houston History of Medicine Lectures (2006-2012)

This talk will outline the history of the doctor-patient relationship in the West. It will touch briefly on medicine in Greek and Roman antiquity, using key texts from Hippocrates and Galen. It will also sketch the changing balance of the religious and the secular in medieval medicine. Finally, it will outline the rise of the modern personal doctor-patient relationship in the 18th century and analyze the chronic dissatisfaction that settled over relations between doctors and patients in the last quarter of the 20th century.
