Global cleft surgery missions have provided much-needed care to millions of poor patients worldwide. Still, surgical capacity in low- and middle-income countries is generally inadequate. Through surgical missions, global cleft care has largely ascribed to a vertical model of healthcare delivery, which is disease specific, and tends to deliver services parallel to, but not necessarily within, the local healthcare system. The vertical model has been used to address infectious diseases as well as humanitarian emergencies. By contrast, a horizontal model for healthcare delivery tends to focus on long-term investments in public health infrastructure and human capital and has less often …

The Rules Of Facebook Friendship: A Two-Stage Examination Of Interaction Rules In Close, Casual, And Acquaintance Friendships, Erin M. Bryant, Jennifer Marmo

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

The present study examined friendship rules on the online social networking site Facebook. Study 1 used focus group data to inductively create a list of 36 Facebook friendship rules. Study 2 utilized survey data to examine college students’ endorsement of the various rules in close, casual, and acquaintance friendships. Results indicated five categories of Facebook friendship rules, which included rules regarding communication channels, deception and control, relational maintenance, negative consequences for the self, and negative consequences for a friend. Additionally, close friends, casual friends, and acquaintances significantly differed in their endorsement of four of the five rules categories. Results suggested …

The Vietnamese Francophone literature began to take shape so early in the late nineteenth century. It develops later in the periods that followed. However, we wonder if this literature is currently in autonomous fi eld. Using the sociology of literature as a point of departure, we would like to dedicate this study to take into account the world of Vietnamese writers, in particular examining how they enter the literary field. Also, before highlighting the concepts of geographic and literary boundaries directly related to Vietnamese writers, we focus our attention on the educational and professional category they occupy. Better Pleasing The Court: How The American Collegiate Moot Court Association Can Improve Its Competition, Alan R. Gray Jr.

National Forensic Journal

The American Collegiate Moot Court Association strives to educate undergraduates about the American legal system through participation in moot court, a simulated oral argument before an appellate court. Its competition structure, however, suffers from defects that undermine the educational value of the event. This article argues that the ACMCA ought to adopt certain reforms in its operational structure, including geographically locking its regional competitions, abandoning its practice of power-matching preliminary rounds, and rewriting its judging ballot. These goals would not only enhance the quality of the legal education received by its participants, but improve students’ forensic learning experience as well.

André Schwarz-Bart’s literary call was born from his will to immortalize in writing the memory of the culture of his Jewish ancestors which was eradicated from the map of Europe during the Shoa. A pioneer of the “memory work” with The Last of the Justs, a novel awarded the Goncourt in 1959, he invented the genre of the “identity saga” whose heroes gather within themselves the centuriesold experience of their people. A similar ambition guided him while he composed a cycle – that remained mostly unpublished – about Black slavery and the culture issued from it: A Woman Named Solitude.

This article studies in what forms the magical-religious dimension is expressed in the fiction works of the Schwarz-Bart couple in order to assess the function given by the authors to the manifestations of the “divine” therein. The frontier between belief and miscreancy is particularly flexible in each of the novels – whether written jointly or separately – by André and / or Simone Schwarz-Bart. Indeed, co-signed or not, the identity quest cannot be dissociated from the religious one: a quest of the meaning of suffering, of a balm that remedies the agonies and compensates for the traumas endured by two …

When VE Day was announced in 1945, twenty-one year old Joy Trott was halfway across the Atlantic Ocean with a newborn daughter who had yet to meet her father. Armed with a trunk and a pram, Joyce embarked on a new life alongside her Canadian husband.

In her memoirs, Trott recounts her early childhood in Depression-era Great Britain and the death of her parents, her life as a teenaged volunteer in the Auxiliary Territorial Service of the British Army, and her immigration to Canada as a young war bride. Religious Leaders In Crisis: An Analysis Of Image Restoration Strategies And Content Variables, Melody Teracita Fisher

The following study employs content analysis to examine the crisis communication responses and audience reception of religious leaders involved in scandal. Benoit’s Image Repair Strategies and the Contingency Theory are used to determine the strategies, stances and contingent variables of mega-church leaders: Jim Bakker, Ted Haggard, Eddie Long, Henry Lyons and Jimmy Swaggart; and the Boston Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. News framing theory determined media and audience reception of the religious leaders’ crisis communication responses.

The study concludes that there is little difference in mega-church leaders and the Boston Diocese’s crisis communication responses. Religious leaders’ dominant strategies were …

There appears to be a disconnect between the actual events of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming and the scholarly work devoted to the play--while each of the main characters are morally problematic, it is only the play's sole female character, Ruth, whose morality is questioned. This schism in which Ruth is questioned but others are not stems primarily from the time in which most of this criticism occurred: before post-structuralist understandings of gender undermined our presuppositions about the sexes.
