The Effects Of Mind Mapping Activities On Students' Motivation, Brett D. Jones, Chloe Ruff, Jennifer Dee Snyder, Britta Petrich, Chelsea Koonce Jan 2012

The Effects Of Mind Mapping Activities On Students' Motivation, Brett D. Jones, Chloe Ruff, Jennifer Dee Snyder, Britta Petrich, Chelsea Koonce

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

We examined how students‟ motivation differed when they participated in three different types of mind mapping activities: one activity that was completed individually outside of class time, one that was completed individually in class with the instructor available for help, and one that was completed in class with other students and the instructor available for help. Using the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation (Jones, 2009) as a framework, we implemented a concurrent mixed methods design using identical samples whereby the quantitative component was dominant over the qualitative component. Participants included 40 undergraduate students enrolled in an educational psychology course at …

Creative Differences: Teaching Creativity Across The Disciplines, Elizabeth Marquis, Susan Vajoczki Jan 2012

Creative Differences: Teaching Creativity Across The Disciplines, Elizabeth Marquis, Susan Vajoczki

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Several authors have suggested that educational institutions have a responsibility to foster creativity in their students. Yet, research has shown that creativity is a variable concept that can mean different things in different fields and contexts (Kaufman & Baer, 2005). As a result, generic pedagogical techniques for developing creativity may not be equally appropriate across domains.

In light of these factors, this pilot study explored (via an electronic survey of instructors) the ways in which creativity is defined and taught across McMaster University’s six faculties. Results suggested areas of both commonality and difference across disciplines in terms of academics’ understandings …

The Learning Alliance Inventory: Instrument Development And Initial Validation, Daniel T. Rogers Jan 2012

The Learning Alliance Inventory: Instrument Development And Initial Validation, Daniel T. Rogers

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Despite potential applications to educational contexts, the working alliance concept has largely been confined to psychotherapy intervention research. Some have explored theoretically related concepts (e.g., immediacy, rapport), but no measure currently exists of the working alliance between a teacher and student within an academic course. The aim of this study was to develop such a measure. Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses led to the creation of the Learning Alliance Inventory (LAI), which contained three factors (Collaborative Bond, Teacher Competency, and Student Investment). Reliability and validity analyses indicated that the LAI has temporal stability, distinguishes between instructors, and correlates …

Impact Of A Counseling Ethics Course On Graduate Students’ Learning And Development, Glenn W. Lambie, Kara P. Ieva Jan 2012

Impact Of A Counseling Ethics Course On Graduate Students’ Learning And Development, Glenn W. Lambie, Kara P. Ieva

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Data from graduate counseling students (N = 28) enrolled in an ethical and legal issues in professional school counseling course at a research university were used to investigate the impact of the course on students’ levels of ethical and legal knowledge (Lambie, Hagedorn, & Ieva, 2010) and ego development (Loevinger, 1976, 1998). Students’ ethical and legal knowledge scores increased significantly and pre-course ego maturity correlated with post-course ethical and legal knowledge. Implications for the scholarship of teaching and learning are discussed.

Assessing The Degree Of Integrated Learner-Centered Instruction On Student Outcomes In A Large Non-Major Environmental Science Course, Ruthanne “Rudi” Thompson, Greta Bolin, Alice Coe Jan 2012

Assessing The Degree Of Integrated Learner-Centered Instruction On Student Outcomes In A Large Non-Major Environmental Science Course, Ruthanne “Rudi” Thompson, Greta Bolin, Alice Coe

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The decision to employ learner-centered teaching methods, teacher-centered teaching methods, or whether to integrate the two within large lecture halls in higher education continues to be heavily researched and hotly debated. All, in one form or another, have been shown effective at varying levels, throughout a myriad of disciplines and across diverse cultures. Yet there are fewer quantitative studies assessing the effects of implementing varying degrees of integrated learner-centered methods within large classroom environments. To that end, this study compared two sections of an undergraduate non-major environmental science large lecture course. One section received a minimal degree of learner-centered (MLC) …

Creating Community: From Individual Reflection To Sotl Transformation, Beau Beaudoin Jan 2012

Creating Community: From Individual Reflection To Sotl Transformation, Beau Beaudoin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Numerous studies have demonstrated that students thrive in courses where a community environment augments their learning experience through shared empowerment and enhanced participant engagement. This essay describes the author’s originally self-directed efforts with classroom community approaches and the transition to utilizing SoTL’s six standards of clear goals, adequate preparation, appropriate methods, outstanding results, effective communication and reflective critique to transform the process from experiment to standards-based assessment. Presenting examples of community practices with two substantially different demographics, a multi-section undergraduate media ethics course and a graduate class for teachers and teacher-candidates, the author suggests that others may benefit from a …

Personal Reflection: Rough Seas To Calmer Waters: The Journey Of An Early Career Academic, Mellissa L. Kruger

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

As an early career academic I have had the opportunity to reflect on my early experiences in academia. This paper is a reflection on my journey through rough seas to calmer waters. This paper describes an uneasy voyage of experience, from confident practitioner to uncertain academic. Helping to steer me through uncharted waters on the high seas of academia was the Graduate Certificate in Education (University Teaching). This experience was instrumental in my development as an academic. Key to this personal reflection is discovery, action and reflection.

Analyzing Levels Of Feedback Delivered By Cooperating Teachers And Supervisors In A Teacher Internship: A Case Study, James Badger Jan 2012

Analyzing Levels Of Feedback Delivered By Cooperating Teachers And Supervisors In A Teacher Internship: A Case Study, James Badger

Georgia Educational Researcher

This research analyzed the feedback delivered by cooperating teachers and university supervisors in an internship, and reports how student teachers perceived the feedback they received during debriefing sessions with their mentors. Hattie and Timperley’s (2007) framework for conceptualizing effective feedback was used to analyze cooperating teachers’ and field supervisor’ assessment of the student teachers’ classroom instruction. Findings from two surveys, documents, and interviews revealed a preponderance of feedback that was devoted to instruction and classroom management with a relative paucity of feedback dedicated to the processing of instruction, consideration of student learning, and development of self-reflection in the student teachers. …

One Urban College Of Education's Examination Of Graduates’ Employment And Retention In Public Schools, Ruchi Bhatnagar, Jihye Kim, Joyce E. Many Jan 2012

One Urban College Of Education's Examination Of Graduates’ Employment And Retention In Public Schools, Ruchi Bhatnagar, Jihye Kim, Joyce E. Many

Georgia Educational Researcher

Difficulties in recruiting and retaining well prepared teachers have plagued American urban schools for many years. This study examines the role teacher education can play in preparing teachers for urban schools. The yield rate and retention rates for teachers graduating from one urban college of education show that the mission of the program to prepare educators for the urban settings and a curriculum focused on providing theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and dispositions for instruction in high-needs classrooms has been successful. The yield and four-year retention data for graduates from this program indicate that the components of teacher preparation significantly …

Georgia Educational Researcher

Quantitative content analysis of a body of research not only helps budding researchers understand the culture, language, and expectations of scholarship, it helps identify deficiencies and inform policy and practice. Because of these benefits, an analysis of a census of 980 Mercer University M.Ed., Ed.S., and doctoral theses was conducted. Each thesis was coded on 10 variables. The descriptive characteristics of the theses, the predictors of the length of the theses, and the predictors of the type of research method used were investigated. The main results were that: (a) the vast majority of thesis authors was female, (b) the number …

Assessment Of Motor Functioning In The Preschool Period, Jan Piek, Beth P. Hands, Melissa Licari

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

The assessment of motor functioning in young children has become increasingly important in recent years with the acknowledgement that motor impairment is linked with cognitive, language, social and emotional difficulties. However, there is no one gold standard assessment tool to investigate motor ability in children. The aim of the current paper was to discuss the issues related to the assessment of motor ability in young pre-school children and to provide guidelines on the best approach for motor assessment. The paper discusses the maturational changes in brain development at the preschool level in relation to motor ability. Other issues include sex …

Comparing The Treatment Effect Of Conversational And Traditional Aphasia Treatments Based On Conversational Outcome Measures, Meghan Collins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This prospective Phase I single-subject (ABABA) study repeated across 4 participants with quasi-randomized treatment order investigated the treatment effects of conversation and traditional stimulation treatments on conversational outcomes. Treatment was administered for 10 sessions (2 one-hour weekly sessions) per treatment type. Primary conversational outcomes included 6-minute conversations coded for pragmatic behaviors and percent Correct Information Units (CIUs). Traditional stimulation probes included auditory comprehension, lexical retrieval, and syntax probe performance. Secondary outcome measures represented the domains of the ICF (WHO, 2001) model with the addition of quality of life. These included the Western Aphasia Battery (Kertesz, 2007), the American Speech Language …

Disciplining Students With Disabilities: An American Perspective, Charles J. Russo, Allan G. Osborne Jr. Jan 2012

Disciplining Students With Disabilities: An American Perspective, Charles J. Russo, Allan G. Osborne Jr.

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

A significant interconnectedness exists between and among schools, parents, students with disabilities, and local communities. A topic of great interest in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and beyond, educators, working in conjunction with their attorneys, struggle with meeting their legal duty to meet the needs of students with disabilities, not only when they are in school but also when they leave formal educational settings since they must then sustain themselves for the rest of their lives. As educators seek to meet the educational needs of students with disabilities, an area that often presents a major controversy is discipline, particularly …

Mcdougal-Lasswell Policy Science: Death And Transfiguration, Jack Van Doren, Christopher J. Roederer Jan 2012

Mcdougal-Lasswell Policy Science: Death And Transfiguration, Jack Van Doren, Christopher J. Roederer

School of Law Faculty Publications

This article discusses the death and transfiguration of the legal paradigm referred to as McDougal-Lasswell Policy Science. This paradigm asserts those who make legal decisions should decide on articulated policy grounds rather than attempting to make decisions based merely on rules or principles. The theme centers on the paradox to which jurists have given different degrees of acceptance. In the United States domestic scene, it is virtually dead, and in the international law arena where it is transfigured, it is alive and well.

The Importance Of Human Mental Workload In Web Design, Luca Longo, Fabio Rusconi, Lucia Noce, Stephen Barrett

Conference papers

The focus of this study is the introduction of the construct of Human Mental Workload (HMW) in Web design, aimed at supporting current interaction design practices. An experiment has been conducted using the original Wikipedia and Google web-interfaces, and using two slightly different versions. Three subjective psychological mental workload assessment techniques (NASA-TLX, Workload Profile and SWAT) with a well-established assessments usability tool (SUS) have been adopted. T-tests have been performed to study the statistical significance of the original and modified web-pages, in terms of workload required by typical tasks and perceived usability. Preliminary results show that, in one ideal case, …

Performing Nostalgia: Body, Memory, And The Aesthetics Of Past-Home, Jade C. Huell Jan 2012

Performing Nostalgia: Body, Memory, And The Aesthetics Of Past-Home, Jade C. Huell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since its etymological beginnings, the meanings and usages of nostalgia have shifted markedly. In the shifting, nostalgia’s associations with the body and with the concept of home has diminished. This study of African American nostalgia for Africa uses genealogical inquiry, personal and autoethnographic narrative, and performance theories and practices to reinvigorate the relations between body, memory, aesthetics, past, and home. Attending to operations of time and space, I theorize the aforementioned relations in order to build a theory of critical nostalgia. Following Debbora Battaglia, I argue and illustrate that nostalgia is an act realized in performance, and I develop my …
