Leading Deeply: A Heroic Journey Toward Wisdom And Transformation, Richard Warm Jan 2012

Leading Deeply: A Heroic Journey Toward Wisdom And Transformation, Richard Warm

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation will explore leadership as a mytho-poetic transformational journey toward self-knowledge, authenticity, and ultimately wisdom; the power to make meaning and give something back to the world in which we live; and the necessity of transformation. I view leadership as a transformative process and a transformational responsibility. As leaders we must undergo our own transformation in order to lead change on a larger scale. The dissertation will be both philosophical and theoretical, exploring how the threads of the hero’s journey, transformation, wisdom, and leadership intertwine. It will also examine the role of education in this process. Education does not …

Emancipation From Affluenza: Leading Social Change In The Classroom, Merri Mattison Jan 2012

Emancipation From Affluenza: Leading Social Change In The Classroom, Merri Mattison

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine if one's level of affluenza could be reduced through education and awareness. In particular, this study measured whether or not exposure to the benefits of community involvement, and the harm of overconsumption could alter the intentions that college students have regarding their behavior, as it pertains to materialism, consumption, and civic responsibility. The data were collected from college students in the form of pre-tests and post-tests utilizing an affluenza scale created for this research. Over the course of a semester, information and activities that elucidated the benefits of community involvement and …

Getting Back To My Life: Exploring Adaptation To Change Through The Experiences Of Breast Cancer Survivors, Charles A. Foster Jan 2012

Getting Back To My Life: Exploring Adaptation To Change Through The Experiences Of Breast Cancer Survivors, Charles A. Foster

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The holding environment concept, developed by Donald Winnicott, has been used to represent the type of support that encourages adaptive change during psychosocial transitions. The leadership and change literature posited that the holding environment had the ability to shape the trajectory of the transition, yet did not test this empirically. The psychosocial breast cancer literature empirically researched support during and after treatments ended, but did not incorporate the holding environment concept. This presented the opportunity to inform both the leadership and breast cancer fields by studying holding environments in the breast cancer setting. This study had a twofold purpose: 1) …

Due Process And Counterterrorism, Amos N. Guiora Jan 2012

Due Process And Counterterrorism, Amos N. Guiora

Emory International Law Review

Counterterrorism--like terrorism--is a reality. Nations have the absolute obligation and right to protect innocent civilians against those seeking to harm them. However, implementation of counterterrorism obligations must be tempered by due process. The essence of democracy is granting--and protecting--the civil and political rights of attacker and attacked alike. Failure to provide due process to individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism leads a society down a slippery slope from which there is no return.

Adjudicating The Intersection Of Marital Immigration, Domestic Violence, And Spousal Murder: China-Taiwan Marriages And Competing Legal Domains, Sara L. Friedman Jan 2012

Adjudicating The Intersection Of Marital Immigration, Domestic Violence, And Spousal Murder: China-Taiwan Marriages And Competing Legal Domains, Sara L. Friedman

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Cross-border marriages and other forms of family reunification dominate officially recognized migratory flows around the world today, and they offer the most widely recognized path to naturalized citizenship in destination countries. At the same time, however, transnational marriages may also rest on shaky foundations precisely because immigrant spouses depend on their citizen partner for legal status. When marriages fail due to domestic violence, they expose the incompatibility of different legal domains organized around domestic violence prevention and immigration regulation. This Article examines the legal conflicts that emerged in response to a recent case in Taiwan involving an immigrant wife from …

The Global Subprime Crisis As Explained By The Contrast Between American Contracts Law And Civil Law Countries' Laws, Practices, And Expectations In Real Estate Transactions, Celeste M. Hammond, Ilaria Landini Jan 2012

The Global Subprime Crisis As Explained By The Contrast Between American Contracts Law And Civil Law Countries' Laws, Practices, And Expectations In Real Estate Transactions, Celeste M. Hammond, Ilaria Landini

Journal of International Business and Law

A significant cause of the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States is that borrowers often have a general lack of understanding or actual misunderstanding of their loan obligations and of the default remedies available to their lenders. Nevertheless, they virtually always are bound by the terms of the documents they have signed even though these are usually “form” contracts. Global investors that purchased securitized mortgages on the secondary market suffered serious losses. Global investors purchasing products in American subprime residential mortgages may have assumed, incorrectly, that the more protective consumer laws incorporated for example in the European Union (EU) …

A Quantitative Examination Of Extreme Facial Pain Expression In Neonates: The Primal Face Of Pain Across Time, Martin Schiavenato, Carl L. Von Baeyer Jan 2012

A Quantitative Examination Of Extreme Facial Pain Expression In Neonates: The Primal Face Of Pain Across Time, Martin Schiavenato, Carl L. Von Baeyer

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Many pain assessment tools for preschool and school-aged children are based on facial expressions of pain. Despite broad use, their metrics are not rooted in the anatomic display of the facial pain expression. We aim to describe quantitatively the patterns of initiation and maintenance of the infant pain expression across an expressive cycle. We evaluated the trajectory of the pain expression of three newborns with the most intense facial display among 63 infants receiving a painful stimulus. A modified “point-pair” system was used to measure movement in key areas across the face by analyzing still pictures from video recording the …

Justice Owen J. Roberts On 1937, Edward L. Carter, Edward E. Adams Jan 2012

Justice Owen J. Roberts On 1937, Edward L. Carter, Edward E. Adams

Faculty Publications

The motivations for Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts’ so-called “switch in time that saved nine” in 1937 remain largely obscured. For much of the past 75 years, judges, lawyers and scholars have discussed—including recently in this journal—why Justice Roberts would vote to uphold minimum-wage legislation in March 1937 when he had voted to invalidate similar legislation in June 1936. Given that President Franklin D. Roosevelt unveiled his court-packing plan on February 5, 1937, externalists have ascribed political motivations to Roberts and the Court. Internalists, meanwhile, have pointed to legal reasons for the switch. However, with the exception of a …
