An Evolutionary View Of The Critical Functions Of Slot Machine Technology, Leslie E. Cummings, Kathleen P. Brewer Dec 2012

An Evolutionary View Of The Critical Functions Of Slot Machine Technology, Leslie E. Cummings, Kathleen P. Brewer

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The U.S. gaming industry has grown from its infancy in the early 1930s to a maturing giant in the 1990s. With this growth has come an evolution in management functions associated with one of the major components of casino operations, the slot department. These functions; counting, analysis, security, maintenance, and marketing, have evolved through an iterative process of technology; applying science to enhance functionality. This paper traces the expanding applications of gaming technologies, and provides a framework for understanding the past, present and future uses of technology in casino slot operations

Changes In Gaming And Gaming Participants In The United States, Roy A. Cook, Laura J. Yale Dec 2012

Changes In Gaming And Gaming Participants In The United States, Roy A. Cook, Laura J. Yale

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Public interest and acceptance of casino gaming as a recreational activity has resulted in a proliferation of gaming locations. The spread of gaming locations and the acceptance of gaming as a legitimate leisure activity may be explained from a marketing perspective through diffusion theory. Gaming could see continued revenue growth and participation or, like lotteries, it could face saturation and even decline. To avoid the potential problems associated with maturation, gaming operators may need to review the experiences of state lotteries which have faced and dealt with the problems of maturation and saturation.

The Values-Based Revolution, David B. Brauer Dec 2012

The Values-Based Revolution, David B. Brauer

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The key to creating a successful business is not guaranteed by disingenuously "going green" especially if that term lacks certain definition. Rather, in addition to adopting principles of environmental stewardship, the values-based leader will discover that in freely espousing and implementing principles in the workplace, consumers with like values will often pay a product and/or service premium to patronize a business demonstrating like mindset. This is the true way of achieving business success.

Power, Responsibility & Wisdom: Exploring The Issues At The Core Of Ethical Decision-Making And Leadership, Bruce Lloyd Dec 2012

Power, Responsibility & Wisdom: Exploring The Issues At The Core Of Ethical Decision-Making And Leadership, Bruce Lloyd

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Decision-making ostensibly requires the exercise of Power. But that use of Power must be counterbalanced with Responsibility in order to make good decisions. Infusing Wisdom into the decision-making process necessarily incorporates an ethical component and involves both the identification and evaluation of relationships. Wise decision-making, therefore, requires the application of Wisdom which transcends simple, short-lived factual proficiency. It is this careful weighing of Wisdom, Power, Knowledge, and Responsibility which must guide our business leaders and be taught to our business students.

Accounting Ethics Education: An Authentic Value-Based Approach, Otto H. Chang

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

In order to infuse the teaching of ethics in the field of Accounting as well as within a business school curriculum per se, the traditional neo-classical method must move away from the microcosm of "self" in favor of consideration for "others."

Homes Across The Border: Russian Summer Houses In The Karelian Isthmus And The Finnish State, 1917–1927, Kitty Lam Dec 2012

Homes Across The Border: Russian Summer Houses In The Karelian Isthmus And The Finnish State, 1917–1927, Kitty Lam

Faculty Publications & Research

At the end of the 19th century, numerous St. Petersburg residents established their summer homes in the Karelian Isthmus, a picturesque region in the Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous province of the Russian Empire. The ease of travel between the Russian imperial capital and the Finnish seaside towns contributed to this practice. After 1917, a new border regime delineated the nascent Finnish state from the equally new Russian/ Soviet state. This change displaced the majority of Russian proprietors, as well as those imperial subjects who rented vacation properties from local Finns. This article addresses how state-building practices distinguishing between …

Expansin Synergy With Cellulases: Development Of A Transgenic Maize System For Expansin Production And Evaluation Of Synergistic Activity On Lignocellulosic Substrates, Sangwoong Yoon Dec 2012

Expansin Synergy With Cellulases: Development Of A Transgenic Maize System For Expansin Production And Evaluation Of Synergistic Activity On Lignocellulosic Substrates, Sangwoong Yoon

Student Theses and Dissertations

One of the greatest barriers to produce biofuels from lignocellulosic material is efficient cellulose depolymerization by cellulase activity. Expansin is a protein that is active in cell wall expansion in growing regions of most plants. Because of this unique activity, expansin synergistic activity with cellulase is believed to lower the depolymerization barrier. Over-expression of expansin in the maize production system is designed to produce sufficient protein 1) to study its physiological effects, and 2) to assess its ability to serve as an industrial enzyme for applications, particularly in biomass conversion. Transgenic lines of maize that express the cucumber expansin gene …

The Effect Of Native Oxide On Ion-Sputtering-Induced Nanostructure Formation On Gasb Surfaces, Osman El-Atwani, Jean Paul Allain, Anastassiya Suslova Dec 2012

The Effect Of Native Oxide On Ion-Sputtering-Induced Nanostructure Formation On Gasb Surfaces, Osman El-Atwani, Jean Paul Allain, Anastassiya Suslova

Birck and NCN Publications

We have investigated the influence of native oxides on ion-sputtering-induced nanostructure formation on GaSb using in situ low energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEISS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Comparing an oxygen-free sample with a native oxide sample, LEISS and XPS reveal the effect of oxygen in generating higher surface Ga fractions during early stages (fluences of 1 x 10(15)-1 x 10(16) cm(-2)) of low energy (< 100 eV) Ar+ irradiation. Enhanced surface Ga and Ga2O3 fractions were also observed on "oxide free" samples exposed to air following irradiation. The results suggest preferential Ga oxidation and segregation on the top of the amorphous layer if oxygen is present on the surface. In addition, the native oxide also increases the fluence threshold for nanopatterning of GaSb surfaces by almost a factor of four during low energy irradiation. Meg Coherence Imaging In Dyslexia: Activation Of Working Memory Pathways, Alfred Mansour Dec 2012

Meg Coherence Imaging In Dyslexia: Activation Of Working Memory Pathways, Alfred Mansour

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The aims of this dissertation are to 1) review the genetic, neurodevelopmental, structural, and functional brain imaging studies that are the foundations of our understanding of dyslexia and 2) investigate the pattern of activation and functional connectivity of neuronal networks critical in working memory in dyslexics by means of magnetoenchephalographic (MEG) coherence imaging. Dyslexics showed an early onset of activation in the precentral gyrus and the superior frontal gyrus, which differed from controls where activation was initiated in posterior cortical regions (supramarginal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus). Further, dyslexics showed lower normalized amplitudes of activation in the right superior temporal …

Developing A Decision Support System For Emergency Management Services In The Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, Katherine E. Schaefer Dec 2012

Developing A Decision Support System For Emergency Management Services In The Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, Katherine E. Schaefer

Geosciences

Every year the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB), in interior Alaska, responds to common emergencies, as well as disasters of varying types. This research first tested several geographic information systems (GIS) based network analysis models to demonstrate how these models could serve as 'decision support' tools for emergency planning and response. Six network analysis models based on FNSB data were evaluated to determine the response times of local fire stations. Each model was tested against real call times and simulated summertime fire emergency response call times to verify model accuracy. The simulated times matched the modeled predictions with remarkably high …

Transient Spatiotemporal Chaos In A Morris-Lecar Neuronal Ring Network Collapses To Either The Rest State Or A Traveling Pulse, Keegan Keplinger Dec 2012

Transient Spatiotemporal Chaos In A Morris-Lecar Neuronal Ring Network Collapses To Either The Rest State Or A Traveling Pulse, Keegan Keplinger

Physics

Transient spatiotemporal dynamics exists in an electrically coupled Morris-Lecar neuronal ring network, a theoretical model of an axo-axonic gap junction network. The lifetime of spatiotemporal chaos was found to grow exponentially with network size. Transient dynamics regularly collapses from a chaotic state to either the resting potential or a traveling pulse, indicating the existence of a chaotic saddle. For special conditions, a chaotic attractor can arise in the Morris-Lecar network to which transient chaos can collapse. The short-term outcome of a Morris-Lecar ring network is determined as a function of perturbation configuration. Perturbing small clusters of nearby neurons in the …

Light-Induced States In Attosecond Transient Absorption Spectra Of Laser-Dressed Helium, Shaohao Chen, M. Justine Bell, Annelise R. Beck, Hiroki Mashiko, Mengxi Wu, Adrian N. Pfeiffer, Mette B. Gaarde, Daniel M. Neumark, Stephen R. Leone, Kenneth J. Schafer

Faculty Publications

Laser-dressed absorption in atomic helium is studied, both theoretically and experimentally, by transient absorption spectroscopy using isolated 400-as pulses centered at 22 eV and 12-fs near-infrared (NIR) pulses with 780-nm central wavelength. Multiple features in the helium singly excited bound-state spectrum are observed only when the NIR and attosecond pulses are overlapped in time. Theoretical analysis indicates that these light-induced structures (LISs) are the intermediate states in resonant, second-order processes that transfer population to multiple dipole forbidden states. The use of broadband, coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation allows observation of these LISs without specifically tuning to a two-photon resonance, as …

Quantum Gravity Extension Of The Inflationary Scenario, Ivan Agullo, Abhay Ashtekar, William Nelson Dec 2012

Quantum Gravity Extension Of The Inflationary Scenario, Ivan Agullo, Abhay Ashtekar, William Nelson

Faculty Publications

Since the standard inflationary paradigm is based on quantum field theory on classical space-times, it excludes the Planck era. Using techniques from loop quantum gravity, the paradigm is extended to a self-consistent theory from the Planck scale to the onset of slow roll inflation, covering some 11 orders of magnitude in energy density and curvature. This preinflationary dynamics also opens a small window for novel effects, e.g., a source for non-Gaussianities, which could extend the reach of cosmological observations to the deep Planck regime of the early Universe. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Sensitivity Analysis Of Arctic Sea Ice In Cmip5 Climate Model Simulations, Xiangdong Zhang, Chuhan Lu Dec 2012

Sensitivity Analysis Of Arctic Sea Ice In Cmip5 Climate Model Simulations, Xiangdong Zhang, Chuhan Lu

Research Posters

The representative characteristics of the simulated 20th century North Hemisphere sea ice by the CMIP5 models have been evaluated against available observations and compared with those by the CMIP3 models. In addition to the analysis of conventional parameters, such as climatological mean and seasonal cycle of sea ice area (SIA), a transient sensitivity analysis of summer SIA to the changes in Arctic regionally averaged melting season surface air temperatures (SAT) was conducted to better understand physics behind model uncertainties (e.g., Gregory et al. 2004; Zhang 2010).
