Musical Protest And Revolutionary Media: Capital Transformation Among Artists, Activists, And Journalists During The 14 January Revolution, Nathanael Mannone Jun 2012

Musical Protest And Revolutionary Media: Capital Transformation Among Artists, Activists, And Journalists During The 14 January Revolution, Nathanael Mannone

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the transformations of cultural, symbolic and material capital (and power) both within and among the fields of music, activist, and journalism during the recent uprising in Tunisia. Analyzing a selection of Tunisian music juxtaposed to several ubiquitous conjectures in the news media, I also challenge the role music is purported to have played in these revolutions. In recent months, many in the international press and music industry have credited hip-hop artists in Tunisia as being a driving force in the 14 January Revolution. Many cite substantially increased levels of outspokenness among the artist community against the regime …

A Theory Of Music As Political Resistance, Ian D. Walker May 2012

A Theory Of Music As Political Resistance, Ian D. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis began as a curiosity about the correlation between politics and music. Closer inspection revealed that there is an absence of literature discussing the relationship between the two. The vacuum in the literature allows this adaptation of John Kingdon’s Streams Theory to serve as a theoretical framework through which the relationship between music and politics can be viewed. Upon applying this theoretical framework, the case study genres identified paint a picture of resistant music arising as a function of government action, social climate, and large-scale events that affect the streams identified. In short, government action, social climate, and large-scale …

“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman May 2012

“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

By now, most academicians are aware of the assaults on academic freedom as contained in the Academic Bill of Rights (ABOR) legislation introduced, in some form, in some 24 states. Part of a national movement to muzzle professors deemed too liberal for our colleges and universities, this witch hunt, instigated by former liberal radical David Horowitz, has had a chilling effect on campuses. Some faculty organizations are fighting back; APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties), a union representing some 5,500 faculty and coaches in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), is one of them. This …

Bayesian And Related Methods: Techniques Based On Bayes' Theorem, Mehmet Vurkaç May 2012

Bayesian And Related Methods: Techniques Based On Bayes' Theorem, Mehmet Vurkaç

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Bayes' theorem is a simple algebraic consequence of conditional probability. Yet, its consequences are critical to philosophy, society, and technology. Starting from its simple derivation, we will show how its interpretation in terms of base rates (priors) and class-conditional likelihoods illuminates everyday problems in medicine and law, and provides signal processing, communications, machine learning, model selection, and other applications of statistics with powerful classification and estimation tools. Next, we will briefly examine some of the ways in which this theorem can be adopted to include multiple attributes, contexts, hypotheses, and levels of risk. Methods derived from or related to Bayes’ …

Brazilian Piano Through The Ages: A Look At The Development In Style Through The Context Of Social Issues And Historical Influences, Rebecca Lin Chen May 2012

Brazilian Piano Through The Ages: A Look At The Development In Style Through The Context Of Social Issues And Historical Influences, Rebecca Lin Chen

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This project seeks to explore the development of piano music in Brazil, through the historical and social context of five different composers: Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ernesto Nazareth, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Francisco Mignone, and Edmundo Villani-Côrtes. By studying representative pieces of these composers, main influences are revealed, such as avoidance of or defying social stigmas, the impact of choro music, the influence of folklore and folk tunes, and the European and Romantic piano tradition. Furthermore, through the work of a composer still living today, we can trace these historical aspects into the modern day.

Counternarratives Of The Diaspora: Haitian Musical Performance In World Beat Markets, Kevin Francis Mason May 2012

Counternarratives Of The Diaspora: Haitian Musical Performance In World Beat Markets, Kevin Francis Mason

Open Access Theses

This study will investigate the performance motivations of three Haitian musicians based in South Florida who use their artistic platforms to offer a version of their country omitted from dominant media projections of the country. This study focuses on narrative as a device that allows these musicians to offer counterstories against dominantly negative media projections that have real effects on Haitians. The thesis will examine the work of world beat artist Erol Josué and his performance motivations in global record markets. His work as a oungan (Vodou priest) plays a large role in the composition of his “electro-Vodou” world beat …

Marcos Suzano And The Amplified Pandeiro: Techniques For Nontraditional Performance, Brian James Potts May 2012

Marcos Suzano And The Amplified Pandeiro: Techniques For Nontraditional Performance, Brian James Potts

Open Access Dissertations

Widely recognized in Brazil as the nation’s quintessential percussion instrument, the pandeiro (or Brazilian tambourine) has long been an integral part of samba and other popular styles of Brazilian music. However, in recent years, the pandeiro has increased in prominence within the international percussion community as performers have used contemporary techniques to broaden the possible applications of the instrument. These advancements arose largely from the work of the percussionist Marcos Suzano, whose name has become almost synonymous with the pandeiro itself. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1963, his innovative use of sound reinforcement and development of new performance techniques …

A Conductor’S Guide To The Poetic And Musical Style Of The Cante Jondo Based On The Work Of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’S Romancero Gitano, Op.152, For Choir And Guitar With Selected Poems Of Federico Garcia Lorca’S Poema Del Cante Jondo, Elsa Patricia Ramierz-Hacker

Dissertations

Composers around the world have found the poetry of Federico García Lorca a source of inspiration for solo and choral works. Mario Castelnuovo- Tedesco used seven texts from Lorca’s Poema del Cante Jondo (Deep Song Poems) in his work Romancero Gitano, op. 152, for choir and guitar.

The purpose of this study is to provide a conductor’s guide to the poetic, historical, and musical structure of the cante jondo. Cante jondo or “deep song” is considered the most serious and profound collection of songs in Flamenco music. These songs express the history and landscape of the Andalucían region. Donn Phoren …

Voice Of Women In Byzantine Music Within The Greek Orthodox Churches In America, Rachel Nicole Brashier May 2012

Voice Of Women In Byzantine Music Within The Greek Orthodox Churches In America, Rachel Nicole Brashier

Theses

Byzantine chant, the music of the Greek Orthodox Churches in America, embeds meanings and functions as a methodological tool which constructs and teaches about the role of women within church communities. This thesis explores how as cultural group identity, belongingness, and gender identity are semiotically iconized, purified, and recursively transmitted through the liturgical music of the church, specifically hymns about women saints and The Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God. This work is a culmination of twelve years of ethnomusicological fieldwork conducted by the author in Midwestern Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries, using participant-observation techniques. The work outlines the …

An American In Paris: Musical Exoticism In The Solo Piano Works Of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Jonathan Edward Verbeten May 2012

An American In Paris: Musical Exoticism In The Solo Piano Works Of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Jonathan Edward Verbeten

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Louis Moreau Gottschalk was a nineteenth-century American piano virtuoso and composer. In 1841, at the age of twelve, Gottschalk left his native New Orleans to pursue a formal musical education in Paris. During his sojourn, Gottschalk gained fame for his piano music, in which he claimed to portray creole culture, more specifically the songs, dances, and rituals of Louisiana slaves. Nineteenth-century music critics were all too eager to crown Gottschalk as the first great American composer. In the present era, his music is still a source of national pride. I propose that Gottschalk's music is not necessarily an accurate representation …

Bulgarian Chalga: Forming A Post-Communist Identity Through Music, Megan Drevits Apr 2012

Bulgarian Chalga: Forming A Post-Communist Identity Through Music, Megan Drevits

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

During the mid-1990s, against the background of a dizzyingly unstable economy and a corrupt and transitional political climate, a new genre of popular music rose to prominence in Bulgaria and came to be viewed by many as a complex symbol of this new, post-communist society. Although it has been given several names in its short history, this genre is most commonly known today as chalga, a designation that has a variety of connotations, both purely musical and purely derogatory. At its core, chalga is a fusion music genre that combines elements of Bulgarian folk music, Roma and Turkish music, …

Social Qualities Of Time And Space Created In Performing Arts Of West Java; The Implications For Safeguarding Living Culture, Wim Van Zanten Apr 2012

Social Qualities Of Time And Space Created In Performing Arts Of West Java; The Implications For Safeguarding Living Culture, Wim Van Zanten

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Collective representations of "time" do not passively reflect time, but time and space are mediated by society. By our social practices, such as making music and dancing, we create time. Different cultural groups may experience and perceive time in different ways, and also within one cultural group the quality of time is not always experienced in the same way. Anthropological studies have shown that in each cultural group different perceptions of time co-exist. For instance, time generally tends to be perceived as both a linear flow and as repetitive. We should not confuse metaphysical and sociological arguments about time: time …

On The Sound Related To Painted Caves And Rocks, Iégor Reznikoff Apr 2012

On The Sound Related To Painted Caves And Rocks, Iégor Reznikoff

KIP Articles

Caves have natural properties of resonance: some areas sound very good acoustically, the sound lasts for several seconds or produces multiple echoes, whereas other areas have a dull resonance or no resonance at all. In a painted cave, it is extremely interesting to compare the map of the most resonant locations with the map of the locations of the paintings: are there correlations between resonance and paintings? Many Palaeolithic caves in France and in the Ural mountains have been studied, and for most of them the answer was remarkably positive: in short, the more resonant the location, the more paintings …

Incorporating Hispanic Culture Into A Secondary Instrumental Classroom, Alexander Armstead Apr 2012

Incorporating Hispanic Culture Into A Secondary Instrumental Classroom, Alexander Armstead

Honors Theses

For much of history, there has been a long-standing belief of the superiority of Western art music; that it is more natural, complex, expressive, and meaningful than other musics. This standpoint is being challenged more than ever as advances in musicology, ethnomusicolgy, global communication and media bring musics of other nations and cultures to the doorstep of the American people. There are many benefits to teaching cultural music in the instrumental classroom, including social and musical components. These components have the ability to open the minds of students to a higher sense of community as they enter the "world village" …

The Honogenization Of Trombone Sound Preferences: The Effects Of A More Global Society On National Styles, Alyssa B. Madeira Apr 2012

The Honogenization Of Trombone Sound Preferences: The Effects Of A More Global Society On National Styles, Alyssa B. Madeira

Honors Theses

The trombone and music in general have been greatly influenced by globalization. Over the past few decades the ideal playing style of trombone has become increasingly similar throughout the word. The fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the integration of Eastern Europe into the rest of the Western world marked a turning point in the way that music was perceived and shared. More and more musicians began to blend their playing styles as they traveled across borders and oceans. Sharp contrasts by region in interpretation of literature and the ideal sound were common in the early 1990's, but …

"Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares": Folk Music Transcriptions For Trombone Choir, James John Albrecht Apr 2012

"Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares": Folk Music Transcriptions For Trombone Choir, James John Albrecht

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Current trombone choir repertoire consists almost entirely of western classical and jazz music. Missing from the trombone ensemble's repertoire are works from outside western choral, symphonic, and jazz idioms and particularly folk music. The addition of Bulgarian folk music contributes to a much needed variety in the current trombone choir repertoire. The use of any ethnic or nationalistic music has both educationaland aesthetic value. Like all well-conceived trombone choir music, these Bulgarian folk transcriptions in this paper aid in the development of chamber music skills. This document will discuss how Bulgarian folk music is a good source for trombone choir …
