An Analysis Of Elderly Gamers' Trip Characteristics And Gambling Behavior: Comparing The Elderly With Their Younger Counterparts, Omar Moufakkir

The purpose of this study was to examine trip characteristics and gambling behavior of the elderly and compare them with those of other age groups. Visitors to two large Midwestern commercial land-based casinos completed a follow-up telephone survey. Of the 32 represented variables, II indicated a significant difference between age groups: Elderly gamblers were the least likely to engage in other recreational activities besides gambling. They were the least likely to obtain information about the casino and the least likely to use the Internet for this information. They preferred to visit casinos on weekdays, and indicated an interest in buying …

This paper analyzes the financial competitiveness of the Macau gaming industry visa- vis its counterparts in North America and Europe. The analysis covers casino product structure, revenue composition, assets productivity and financial returns of Macau versus those of gaming destinations in North America and Europe. The findings reveal that while Macau is advantageously positioned in terms of assets productivity and financial returns, its casino product structure and revenue composition seem at odds with today's gaming trend. While a multitude of Internet enterprises folded in the 1990s, online gambling websites not only have held strong, but appear to be ready to increase the stakes. No business relating to the Internet currently generates more revenue than online gambling, and that trend does not look like it will change soon. The legislative gaps in international eCommerce and specifically in the gambling industry mean that many consumers face the market condition of caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). In terms of consumer psychology, caveat emptor increases consumer perceptions of risk and slows the diffusion of Internet gambling. This paper discusses the specific risks associated with Internet gambling and presents an industry structure designed to off-set consumer perceptions of perceived risk through industry self regulation and alternative dispute management techniques.

Debates surrounding casino gaming development in the US often are based on the assumption that the opening of a casino is followed by an increase in crime in the host community and surrounding areas. This paper examined crime volume in Detroit, Michigan and neighboring communities before, during and after the three Detroit casinos opened. Findings indicated that total Index Crime offenses did not increase in Detroit. However, it appeared that the volume of certain types of crime slightly increased while others decreased. The commercial casino industry in 2002 provided more jobs, higher wages, and more tax revenues to states and local communities than ever before. At the same time Internet gambling sites operated by offshore companies have seen explosive growth since the introduction of the World Wide Web in 1995 (Rose, 2003). Considerable research in recent years has examined the influence of physical evidence, or atmosphere, in a variety of service settings, including leisure services. Not fully covered has been the area of atmosphere in a casino gaming setting. This extension of a previous study further investigates atmospherics in casinos. The findings showed that customers defined casino atmosphere in five key elements: theme, floor layout, ceiling height, employee uniforms, and noise level. Three of the five contributed positively to a player's satisfaction with the gaming experience as shown by the regression analysis. This paper aims to explain why responsible provision of gambling is an important corporate social issue facing many gambling providers by examining its status with reference to three characteristic features of such issues proposed in the corporate social responsibility literature--expectational gaps, impacts and controversy (Wartick and Mahon, 1994). The existence of expectational gaps, impacts and controversy relating to contemporary gambling operations thus clarifies why gambling providers are under pressure to manage their gambling operations in a more socially responsible manner. The purpose of this research was to examine the managerial and finance roles of casino controllers. Controllers were surveyed and interviewed about the current state of their role within their companies. A survey was given to 60 casino controllers attending the casino controllers' conference at the Monte Carlo Resort in Las Vegas on March 16, 2000. Interviews were conducted with five casino controllers to obtain qualitative information that could not be obtained through the questionnaire. The results provide detailed information on the role behavior of casino controllers and their contribution to organizational goal attainment.

This study applies a tourism model developed by Perdue, Long, and Allen ( 1990) to investigate residents' perceptions of Native American Gambling in Kansas. A survey was administered to 1038 households, on a population proportionate basis, in Brown County (35 .65% ), Doniphan County (25.30% ), and Jackson County (39.05% ). Results indicated several relationships among perceived impacts of NAG development, including the respondent's gender, gaming trips, age, employment status, and income level. This study explores women's representation in gaming management in the 24 highest gross revenue gaming establishments in America. While almost 54% of foodservice and lodging employees are women, and approximately 44% of the managers in foodservice and lodging are women, one area of hospitality seems to be lagging-gaming. Our data indicated that women held 123 of 496 positions or 24.8% of casino management positions. Almost 68% of these female managers were in non-gaming positions. Our findings appear to support social closure theory since 11 of the 40 women in gaming management positions were in the cage department, and 4 of …

This paper develops a definition and conceptual framework of responsible provision of gambling that integrates three central constructs in the corporate social performance literature. It depicts responsible provision of gambling as the congruence between the socially responsible principles, socially responsive processes and socially desirable practices that gambling operators pursue and those expected by their key stakeholders in managing the social impacts of gambling. The framework therefore provides some theoretical underpinnings to clarify the meaning of responsible provision of gambling and to facilitate its implementation in order to inform scholarly research and applied initiatives. This study investigates the elements of casino atmospherics from the perspective of slot machine players in a Las Vegas Strip casino. Guest responses to a survey instrument that was developed to measure the elements of casino atmosphere were collected and quantitatively analyzed. The results of this study suggest that the design elements of floor layout and theme may be most closely aligned with the concept of casino atmosphere from the perspective of a slot player. Recent years have seen the fast spread of legalized gaming throughout the world. Amid the frenzied gaming boom, new casinos have mushroomed on every continent. Casinos in different continents operate in different legal and market environments and may have performed quite differently. This study examines the performance results of U. S. casinos, those in Nevada and on the Las Vegas Strip in particular, in comparison with Dutch and French casinos in 1998. It was found that Dutch and French casinos outperformed U. Before gaming organizations can initiate efforts to service their customers, they must be able to effectively manage the service encounter. Although every service encounter is not necessarily critical to satisfaction, it is not always obvious which are crucial to the customer and which are not. Using critical incidents reported by gaming customers and employees, this study identifies service encounters that both parties perceive as being very satisfactory or very dissatisfactory from the customer's point of view. Social Costs Of Gambling: A Comparative Study Of Nutmeg And Cheese State Gamblers, William N. Thompson, Ricardo Gazel, Dan Rickman

An analysis of the social costs of problem gambling finds similar results from two surveys of gamblers in treatment in Wisconsin (N=98) and Connecticut (N=112). Cost factors examined include lost work time and unemployment, bad debts, thefts, civil court costs, criminal justice system costs, and welfare costs. The problem gambler in Wisconsin imposes an annual cost of $8,681 on other persons, while Connecticut costs amount to $15,994. The variations between the two groups surveyed are found, for the most part, in costs of thefts. The differences can be explained by the fact that legalized gambling has been established longer in …

Two Consumption Models For United States Casino Areas Utilizing Competition And Site Attribute Variables, David M. Pearlman

In this study, multiple regression techniques were used to build two consumption models to better understand supply and demand influences on casino revenues. The initial model contained 15 independent variables and explained 97% of the variance in revenues. However, due to assumption violations, assessing the relative role of each independent variable proved to be problematic. Subsequently, a Reduced Variable Model was developed which explained 83% of the variance, and included six independent variables. As stand-alone prediction tools, the models do not yield useful revenue estimates, due to their large standard errors of the estimate, however, they do explain relative influences …

Horse and dog racetracks across the U.S. are experiencing declining attendance and betting handle. This article summarizes an investigation into possible causes and remedies for these trends. Three topics emerged: policy, marketing, and technology. First, industry and political leaders must cooperate in identifying and addressing central political-legal issues. Racing's second focus must be marketing management, especially the changing competitive marketplace and specific marketing mix elements. A third concentration for racing industries is the intelligent application of technologies for such strategic purposes as expanding both the track product mix and its distribution.
