Human Pelvis And Long Bones Reveal Differential Preservation Of Ancient Population History And Migration Out Of Africa, Lia Betti, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephen J. Lycett
Human Pelvis And Long Bones Reveal Differential Preservation Of Ancient Population History And Migration Out Of Africa, Lia Betti, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephen J. Lycett
Human Biology
One of the main events in the history of our species has been our expansion out of Africa. A clear signature of this expansion has been found on global patterns of neutral genetic variation, whereby a serial founder effect accompanied the colonization of new regions, in turn creating a within-population decrease in neutral genetic diversity with increasing distance from Africa. This same distinctive pattern has also been described for cranial and dental morphological variation in human populations distributed across the globe. Here, we used a data set of postcranial linear measurements for 30 globally distributed human populations, and a climatic …

Resource Availability, Mortality, And Fertility: A Path Analytic Approach To Global Life-History Variation, Mark A. Caudell, Robert J. Quinlan
Human Biology
Humans exhibit considerable diversity in timing and rate of reproduction. Life history theory (LHT) suggests that ecological cues of resource richness and survival probabilities shape human phenotypes across populations. Populations experiencing high extrinsic mortality due to uncertainty in resources should exhibit faster life histories. Here we use a path analytic (PA) approach informed by LHT to model the multiple pathways between resources, mortality rates, and reproductive behavior in 191 countries. Resources that account for the most variance in population mortality rates are predicted to explain the most variance in total fertility rates. Results indicate that resources (e.g., calories, sanitation, education, …

Ars Assists In Fight Against Kudzu Bug, Jan Suszkiw, Walker Jones
Agricultural Research Magazine
Sure, this distant relative of the brown marmorated stink bug will feed voraciously on the stems of kudzu, the “Vine That Ate the South.” But Megacopta cribraria also has a taste for soybean and other legumes. In Georgia, where this native of Asia was first discovered in the United States in October 2009, there’s worry that the pest will set its sights on peanut, endangering a $2 billion crop that supplies nearly 50 percent of America’s peanuts (Georgia Peanut Commission, 2009).
Like the brown marmorated stink bug, Megacopta—also known as the “bean plataspid”—seeks shelter inside homes, buildings, and vehicles …

Wildlife Camera Carnivore Survey: Santa Margarita Ranch, Ca, Christina Mcadams
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
The Santa Margarita Wildlife Carnivore Survey was designed to study the diversity of wildlife of the Santa Margarita Ranch, and to provide an interface with the Learning Among the Oaks (LATO) outdoor education program. The study took place in the coastal range of California, United States, and was aimed at addressing species specific analysis including habitat utilization, latency to detection, and activity patterns. Target species included native carnivores (mountain lion, bobcats, coyotes) and nonnative species of management concern (feral pigs, red fox). Working nights and camera efficiency were also compared between camera models. Six Cuddeback cameras were deployed on Santa …
Leptin As A Novel Predictor Of Somatic Depressive Symptoms In Hispanics With The Metabolic Syndrome, Diana A. Chirinos Medina
Leptin As A Novel Predictor Of Somatic Depressive Symptoms In Hispanics With The Metabolic Syndrome, Diana A. Chirinos Medina
Open Access Theses
The association between depression and the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) has been extensively investigated, and inflammation has been identified as an underlying link. Recent reports, however, indicate a possible role of leptin in modulating the immune response, yielding increases in inflammatory markers. The literature suggests this hormone may not only explain the metabolic abnormalities associated with depression but may also act as a biomarker of depression itself. This study aimed to determine the association between circulating leptin and total depressive symptoms and depressive symptom dimensions (cognitive and somatic) after controlling for important confounding factors such as age, gender, insulin resistance, body …

Congenital cardiovascular defects (CHD) are the most common causes of infant death from birth defects (Lloyd-Jones, Adams et al. 2010). In the United States, over 25,000 cases with myocardial defects such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome were recorded in 2001. Beyond this astonishing number, an estimated 3 million more people have bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) (Rosamond, Flegal et al. 2008). Despite the clinical significance, there is a lack of effective therapies for treating CHDs, with surgical intervention as the most common treatment. Thus understanding the normal development of these affected cardiac compartments may provide novel insights and therapeutic targets of …

Application Of 3d-Fluorescence And Parafac Modeling In Marine Dom Investigations, Wilson G. Mendoza
Open Access Dissertations
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the nutrient and carbon cycling in the coastal-shelf-ocean boundary. It is a major reservoir of reduced carbon and carries important information on how the sea and landscape have been modified. Due to the complexity of the biogeochemical processes in this boundary, its distribution is not well understood. This study evaluated the Excitation Emission Matrix (EEM) fluorescence method combined with Parallel Factorial Analysis (PARAFAC) modeling to resolve DOM fluorescence components, and their distribution from near-shore to off-shore. Results of this study demonstrated several advances in monitoring the temporal distribution of DOM on …

Evaluation Of Viability Of Lactobacillus Acidophilus La-5 During Simulated Digestion Process Using A Dynamic In Vitro Model, Jenifer Tharani
Master's Theses
In recent years, there has been an upsurge in medical research assessing the therapeutic benefits of probiotic bacteria and growing commercial interest in food fortification with these bacteria. Probiotic bacteria such as L. acidophilus are known to be predominant Lactobacilli species in the intestinal tract of healthy humans and suggested to provide clinical health benefits such as enhancement of immunity against intestinal infections, prevention of diarrhea and hypercholesterolaemia and improvement in lactose utilization. Many studies have demonstrated the possibility of incorporating probiotic bacteria in an ice cream matrix and shown its viability can be maintained throughout the shelf life of …

Deciphering Phosphotyrosine-Dependent Signaling Networks In Cancer By Sh2 Profiling, Kazuya Machida
UCHC Articles - Research
It has been a decade since the introduction of SH2 profiling, a modular domain-based molecular diagnostics tool. This review covers the original concept of SH2 profiling, different analytical platforms, and their applications, from the detailed analysis of single proteins to broad screening in translational research. Illustrated by practical examples, we discuss the uniqueness and advantages of the approach as well as its limitations and challenges. We provide guidance for basic researchers and oncologists who may consider SH2 profiling in their respective cancer research, especially for those focusing on tyrosine phosphoproteomics. SH2 profiling can serve as an alternative phosphoproteomics tool to …

A Bayesian Approach To Pathway Analysis By Integrating Gene–Gene Functional Directions And Microarray Data, David W. Rowe, Yifang Zhao, Ming-Hui Chen, Dong-Guk Shin, Lynn Kuo
UCHC Articles - Research
Many statistical methods have been developed to screen for differentially expressed genes associated with specific phenotypes in the microarray data. However, it remains a major challenge to synthesize the observed expression patterns with abundant biological knowledge for more complete understanding of the biological functions among genes. Various methods including clustering analysis on genes, neural network, Bayesian network and pathway analysis have been developed toward this goal. In most of these procedures, the activation and inhibition relationships among genes have hardly been utilized in the modeling steps. We propose two novel Bayesian models to integrate the microarray data with the putative …

Long Distance Electron Transfer Across >100 Nm Thick Au Nanoparticle/Polyion Films To A Surface Redox Protein, James F. Rusling, Hongyun Liu, Yasemin Kutes, Bryan D. Huey
UCHC Articles - Research
Glutathione-decorated 5 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and oppositely charged poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) were assembled into {PAH/AuNP}n films fabricated layer-by-layer (LbL) on pyrolytic graphite (PG) electrodes. These AuNP/polyion films utilized the AuNPs as electron hopping relays to achieve direct electron transfer between underlying electrodes and redox proteins on the outer film surface across unprecedented distances >100 nm for the first time. As film thickness increased, voltammetric peak currents for surface myoglobin (Mb) on these films decreased but the electron transfer rate was relatively constant, consistent with a AuNP-mediated electron hopping mechanism.
Effects Of Maternal Low Protein Diet On Expression Of Drug Transporters In The Blood-Brain Barrier Of Adult Offspring, Bonnie L. Hastings
Effects Of Maternal Low Protein Diet On Expression Of Drug Transporters In The Blood-Brain Barrier Of Adult Offspring, Bonnie L. Hastings
Senior Theses
Adverse uterine environment, manifested as low birth weight (LBW), has been shown to predispose individuals to hypertension, diabetes, and obesity by mechanisms that are just beginning to be understood. One of the mechanisms is the dysregulation of the expression or function of drug transport proteins, such as the organic anion transporter (OAT) family, which are crucial for the transport of various endogenous and exogenous compounds into and out of all organs, especially the brain. Hence, we examined the status of select drug transporters in the blood-brain barrier (BBB), using a LBW rat model. Maternal low protein diet (LPD) during gestation …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of gaps or stop outs within the developmental mathematics course sequence on the successful completion of college algebra.
Community colleges are undergoing a transformation. Historically, they have been focused on improving access to higher education; now the focus has shifted to student success. This transformation is evident in the concerted effort to improve student graduation rates and decrease the amount of time spent to complete degrees. For community colleges, the key to this success must include reform and improvement in developmental education. Within developmental education, mathematics presents the biggest challenge …
Sex And The City: A Promotion Of Modern American Feminism, Cameron Michael Tufino
Sex And The City: A Promotion Of Modern American Feminism, Cameron Michael Tufino
Theses & Dissertations
The television series Sex and the City (SATC), has left a significant impact on American society. The show displays this revelation: American women today have many established cultures of equal worth in male dominated discourses. This thesis explains how the shows narrative represents and expands feminist ideology in America. By modernizing feminist discourses, SATC challenges televisual female representation on subject matters including motherhood, sexuality, marriage, gender identity, and family. Investigating its four protagonists - Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha - demonstrates how the narrative contributed to the social movement of feminism. Furthermore, with analyzing its construction and display since the …
