Effects Of Salinity On Growth, Oxygen Consumption Rate And Ion Regulation In Two Ages Of Alligator Gar Atractosteus Spatula, Daniel Edwin Schwarz
Effects Of Salinity On Growth, Oxygen Consumption Rate And Ion Regulation In Two Ages Of Alligator Gar Atractosteus Spatula, Daniel Edwin Schwarz
Theses and Dissertations
The alligator gar Atractosteus spatula is a euryhaline fish found in the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding drainages. However, the extent of its hypo-osmotic abilities are not well understood. To determine effect of salinity on growth, metabolic rate, and osmoregulation abilities the following question was developed: when does the alligator gar have the osmoregulatory capabilities to survive in hyperosmotic environments? To answer this question, two different age groups (60 and 330 days after hatch [DAH]) of juvenile alligator gar were exposed to 4 different salinities (0, 8, 16, and 24 ppt) for a 30-day period. Specific growth rate, oxygen consumption …
Efficacy And Biodegradability Of Pentachlorophenol In Conventional And Biodiesel Amended Carriers, Saeed Keshani Langroodi
Efficacy And Biodegradability Of Pentachlorophenol In Conventional And Biodiesel Amended Carriers, Saeed Keshani Langroodi
Theses and Dissertations
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is widely used as a wood preservative for wood products. It has been proposed that a modified PCP carrier system based on a diesel/biodiesel mixture should be used in place of the conventional diesel/KB3 carrier, but there is some question as to whether or not this modified carrier system can provide the same service life for wood products treated with PCP. The main objectives of this research were to evaluate: 1) the comparative biodegradability of PCP in soil containing either diesel/KB3 or diesel/biodiesel, and 2) the comparative decay resistance of wood treated with formulations containing either diesel/KB3 or …

Enhancement And Evaluation Of A Rainfall-Runoff Single Event Model, Germania Salazar Mejia
Theses and Dissertations
Planning and design of stormwater facilities (including best management practices and low impact development) involve the calculation of peak flows and runoff volumes. Rainfall-runoff models are frequently utilized to estimate this information. A userriendly rainfall-runoff tool (LIDIA) was developed using Visual Basic for Applications in Microsoft Office Excel. This research showed comprehensive guidelines on how to setup a model in LIDIA and reported the first evaluation of LIDIA using field data. LIDIA hydrologic module was tested using 10-minute rainfall, land cover, soil series, land cover management, and runoff data from two small watersheds in North Mississippi. Eleven storm events, over …
Evaluating A Vegetated Filter Strip In An Agricultural Field, Alina Fay Young
Evaluating A Vegetated Filter Strip In An Agricultural Field, Alina Fay Young
Theses and Dissertations
The use of best management practices has become common in recent years, leading to the need for hydrologic models to predict their behavior and effectiveness. A vegetated filter strip at Mississippi State University was used to test two models: the Hydrologic Simulation Program-FORTRAN Best Management Practices Editor (HSPF BMPrac) and the System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis Integration (SUSTAIN). Water samples were taken during the Spring of 2011 and tested for sediments and nutrients; HSPF was used for computing flows, sediments, and nutrients. The filter strip was not effective at pollutant removal with removal efficiency rates of 68.1, 91.7, …
Evaluating The Mechanism Of Oxalate Synthesis Of Fibroporia Radiculosa Isolates Adapting To Copper-Tolerance, Katie Marie Jenkins
Evaluating The Mechanism Of Oxalate Synthesis Of Fibroporia Radiculosa Isolates Adapting To Copper-Tolerance, Katie Marie Jenkins
Theses and Dissertations
Four Fibroporia radiculosa isolates undergoing decay of untreated and 1.2% ammoniacal copper citrate treated wood were evaluated for differential expression of citrate synthase (CS), isocitrate lyase (ICL), glyoxylate dehydrogenase (GLOXDH), succinate/fumarate antiporter (ANTI), and a copper resistance-associated ATPase pump (ATPase). Samples were analyzed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks for oxalate and protein production, enzyme activities, and gene expression. ATPase pump expression was increased in the presence of copper when initial oxalate concentrations were low, suggesting it functions in helping the fungus adapt to the copper-rich environment by pumping toxic copper ions out of the cell. A connection in …

Biomechanical Evaluation Of Locking Compression Plate/Rod Constructs And Limited Contact-Dynamic Compression Plate/Rod Constructs In A Gap Model, Wilburn Maret Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations
Fractures occur commonly in veterinary medicine and are usually the result of vehicular trauma. Traditionally, comminuted mid-diaphyseal fractures are repaired with an interlocking nail, dynamic compression plate, or combination of a bone plate with an intramedullary pin. In recent years, the locking compression plate has gained popularity in human orthopedics due to its biomechanical characteristics and stability in osteoporotic or periprosthetic bone. In addition, the plate may be applied in a percutaneous manner, thereby allowing for biological osteosynthesis. This study evaluates the combination of a locking compression plate and an intramedullary pin in a Delrin rod gap model. Modalities tested …

Validation Of Bioluminescent Escherichia Coli O157:H7 For Use As A Pre-Harvest Food Safety Model, Heather Ann Duoss
Theses and Dissertations
Cattle are naturally colonized by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli within the gastrointestinal tract. The most notorious of the enterohemorrhagic E. coli is E. coli O157:H7, which can cause serious illness to humans if ingested. To ensure that the United States has a safe food supply, research is ongoing in pre-harvest food safety and pathogen intervention strategies. While advances in pre-harvest intervention strategies are encouraging, no method has proven to completely eliminate and/or control O157:H7. A key limitation to successful pathogen intervention strategies is the inability to track and monitor pathogens in a real-time fashion. Through the use of bioluminescent plasmids harboring …

Modeling Effects Of Climatological Variability And Management Practices On Conservation Of Groundwater From The Mississippi River Valley Shallow Alluvial Aquifer In The Mississippi Delta Region, Robert Frank Thornton
Theses and Dissertations
Ninety-eight percent of water taken from the Mississippi River Shallow Alluvial Aquifer, hereafter referred to as “the aquifer” or “MRVA,” is used by the agricultural industry for irrigation. Mississippi Delta agriculture is increasingly using more water from the MRVA and the aquifer has been losing about 300,000 acreeet per year. This research expands on previous work in which a model was developed that simulates the effects of climatic variability, crop acreage changes, and specific irrigation methods on consequent variations in the water volume of the MRVA. This study corrects an identified problem by replacing total growing season precipitation with an …

Theses and Dissertations
Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are important to aquaculture and natural ecosystems, however little is known regarding effects of high summer temperatures, which are predicted to increase with climate change. Therefore, two studies were conducted to examine physiological effects of high temperatures on juvenile channel catfish. The first examined effects of three cycling thermal regimes (23-27°C, 27-31°C, and 31-35°C) characteristic of culture environments in Mississippi on growth, food consumption, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, and activity. The second study measured active and resting metabolic rates and swimming endurance at constant temperatures (27, 31, and 35°C). The best growth and feed …
Identification And Characterization Of C-Type Lectin Genes In Reniform Nematode, Satish Ganji
Identification And Characterization Of C-Type Lectin Genes In Reniform Nematode, Satish Ganji
Theses and Dissertations
Reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis is a semi-endoparasitic nematode infecting over 300 plant species including important fiber crops like cotton. Introgression of reniform nematode resistance from a distantly-related resistant species Gossypium longicalyx into cultivated upland species Gossypium hirsutum has been a challenge. An approach towards achieving nematode resistance in crop plants has been to identify candidate parasitism genes expressed in the nematode facilitating infection of host plant species, and silencing the same through reverse genetic approaches like RNAi. A cDNA library constructed from the sedentary female stage of reniform nematode revealed an EST coding for C-type lectins and occurring in high …

Intuitive Tip Of The Tongue Judgments Predict Subsequent Problem Solving One Day Later, Azurii K. Collier, Mark Beeman
Intuitive Tip Of The Tongue Judgments Predict Subsequent Problem Solving One Day Later, Azurii K. Collier, Mark Beeman
The Journal of Problem Solving
Often when failing to solve problems, individuals report some idea of the solution, but cannot explicitly access the idea. We investigated whether such intuition would relate to improvements in solving and to the manner in which a problem was solved after a 24- hour delay. On Day 1, participants attempted to solve Compound Remote Associate problems, for which they viewed three problem words (crab, sauce, pine) and tried to generate one solution word (apple) that could form a compound word with each problem word (crabapple, applesauce, pineapple). For problems they failed to solve, participants reported whether they had an intuitive …
Visual Attention Modulates Insight Versus Analytic Solving Of Verbal Problems, Ezra Wegbreit, Satoru Suzuki, Marcia Grabowecky, John Kounios, Mark Beeman
Visual Attention Modulates Insight Versus Analytic Solving Of Verbal Problems, Ezra Wegbreit, Satoru Suzuki, Marcia Grabowecky, John Kounios, Mark Beeman
The Journal of Problem Solving
Behavioral and neuroimaging findings indicate that distinct cognitive and neural processes underlie solving problems with sudden insight. Moreover, people with less focused attention sometimes perform better on tests of insight and creative problem solving. However, it remains unclear whether different states of attention, within individuals, influence the likelihood of solving problems with insight or with analysis. In this experiment, participants (N = 40) performed a baseline block of verbal problems, then performed one of two visual tasks, each emphasizing a distinct aspect of visual attention, followed by a second block of verbal problems to assess change in performance. After participants …
Marine Sponges As Bioindicators Of Nitrogen Within Estuaries On The Oregon Coast, Amy Hammerquist, Stacia Cowgill, Matthew Creech
Marine Sponges As Bioindicators Of Nitrogen Within Estuaries On The Oregon Coast, Amy Hammerquist, Stacia Cowgill, Matthew Creech
Science and Social Sciences
As filter feeders, sponges are highly integrated with their environment. Many sponges also host diverse communities of bacteria, including many that are hypothesized to carry out a variety of nitrogen transformations. The presence of these bacteria makes sponges an integral part of the nitrogen cycle in their habitats and suggests that sponges are an excellent bioindicator of environmental conditions. To test these hypotheses, we collected sponge tissue from two Oregon estuaries and extracted microbial DNA from these samples. To assess bacterial diversity, we performed Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) on a fragment of the 16S gene. We also examined nitrogen …
Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Of Peptides Adsorbed On Silver And Gold Nanoparticles In Aqueous Solutions, Stephanie L. Stovall
Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Of Peptides Adsorbed On Silver And Gold Nanoparticles In Aqueous Solutions, Stephanie L. Stovall
Science and Social Sciences
Distinguished from standard techniques of bioanalysis, the high specificity of Raman spectroscopy provides information on a molecular level without tagging the biomolecule. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a surface-sensitive technique that enhances Raman scattering by a factor up to 1011, increasing sensitivity when molecules are adsorbed to silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles. To characterize the physical and chemical properties of di- and tri-peptides, SERS spectra of Gly-Tyr, Phe-Gly-Gly and Val-Tyr-Val were obtained by adsorbing the peptides to Ag and Au nanoparticles in aqueous solutions. The predominance of vibrations and dominant peaks originating in individual amino acid residues …

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Of Invertase On Silver Nanoparticles, Kathryn L. Corp, Brian D. Gilbert
Science and Social Sciences
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive technique to characterize molecules. Proteins have been a key substrate in recent studies with SERS because of their ability to bind strongly and distinctively to other molecules. In this study, the SERS spectrum of β-fructofuranosidase (invertase) was characterized on silver colloids and silver nanoparticle surfaces. Aromatic amino acid and cystine vibrations dominate the SERS spectrum of most proteins, including invertase. Specifically peaks at 812 (tyr), 962 (trp, tyr), 1092 (trp W14, tyr), 1159 (trp W12), 1294 (tyr), 1327 (trp, tyr), 1555 (tyr, trp W3), and 1613 (phe F8a, tyr Y8a, trp W1) …
