Georgia State University Law Review

The Act allows the Governor to declare a state of emergency in the event of a terrorist attack with biological weapons or other public health emergency. Such a declaration would trigger a comprehensive response plan, to be developed by the Division of Public Health of the Department of Human Resources for containing the spread of disease. The Act provides for due process procedures in the event of any quarantine or vaccination program. It also authorizes the Commissioners of Agriculture and of the Department of Human Resources to mandate the reporting of certain diseases or unusual illnesses.

Traversing Swanton Road, 8th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Neuroimmune Function, Life Distress, Stress Management Skills And Physical Symptoms In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Emily G. Lattie May 2012

Neuroimmune Function, Life Distress, Stress Management Skills And Physical Symptoms In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Emily G. Lattie

Open Access Theses

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating disorder with no clear etiology. Many, but not all, patients with CFS evidence signs of neuroimmune dysfunction prompting the suggestion that there exist subgroups of CFS patients with significant neuroimmune dysfunction while other subgroups of diagnosed patients may suffer from CFS-like symptoms due to other causes. Research has demonstrated that emotional distress responses impact CFS symptoms and that having adequate coping skills may predict less illness severity among individuals with CFS. However, no study to date has examined the influence of a comprehensive set of stress management skills on CFS symptoms nor has …

Crossing Over…Markov Meets Mendel, Saad Mneimneh May 2012

Crossing Over…Markov Meets Mendel, Saad Mneimneh

Publications and Research

Chromosomal crossover is a biological mechanism to combine parental traits. It is perhaps the first mechanism ever taught in any introductory biology class. The formulation of crossover, and resulting recombination, came about 100 years after Mendel's famous experiments. To a great extent, this formulation is consistent with the basic genetic findings of Mendel. More importantly, it provides a mathematical insight for his two laws (and corrects them). From a mathematical perspective, and while it retains similarities, genetic recombination guarantees diversity so that we do not rapidly converge to the same being. It is this diversity that made the study of …

Relationship Maintenance, Democratic Decision Making, And Decision Agreement, Jenna M. Tucker May 2012

Relationship Maintenance, Democratic Decision Making, And Decision Agreement, Jenna M. Tucker

Communication

Relationship maintenance uses different strategies to maintain a relationship at the desired level of intimacy. Democratic decision making is a practice through which each individual has equal rights in the decision-making process. The present study investigated connections among two areas of research. In particular, this study examined the correlations among relationship maintenance behaviors, democratic decision making, and decision agreement. Both hypotheses in the study were supported, which suggests relationship maintenance promotes democratic decision making, which in turn promotes decision agreement.

We Need To Talk And The Nation Is Watching: A Textual Analysis Of Drug Interventions, Bailey J. Denhalter May 2012

We Need To Talk And The Nation Is Watching: A Textual Analysis Of Drug Interventions, Bailey J. Denhalter

Communication

Addiction is something that millions of people struggle with. Many are unable to or do not realize that they have a problem. Previously kept as an embarrassing family secret, drug interventions have gone Hollywood. The entertainment industry began publicizing these once private affairs for the nation in the early 2000's; unfortunately, publicity does not ensure a problem will be addressed in the appropriate manner. Drug interventions are typically conducted in secret, away from the prying eyes of neighbors or community members. By a stroke of genius or insanity, the producers at A & E realized the American public's fascination with …

Characterization Of Host-Pathogen Interactions In Two Model Pathogens: Francisella Tularensis And Simian Virus Sv40, Lisa K. Smith May 2012

Characterization Of Host-Pathogen Interactions In Two Model Pathogens: Francisella Tularensis And Simian Virus Sv40, Lisa K. Smith

Chemistry and Biochemistry

We sought to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction. The bacterium Francisella tularensis and simian virus SV40 represent two ideal model systems. Francisella tularensis is a facultative intracellular bacterium known to dampen the host immune response to infection. The Francisella pathogenicity island (FPI) encodes a cluster of 19 genes essential for full virulence and the observed change in immune response. We investigated the role of two FPI encoded proteins, PdpC and PdpD, on immune response. While both proteins affect a change, the effect of PdpD is more pronounced, and appears to play a role in modulation of host immune …

Communicating To Persuade: The Effects Of Language Power And Nonverbal Immediacy On The Efficacy Of Persuasion, Natavan M. Gadzhiyeva May 2012

Communicating To Persuade: The Effects Of Language Power And Nonverbal Immediacy On The Efficacy Of Persuasion, Natavan M. Gadzhiyeva

Communication

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of powerful speech and nonverbal immediacy on the efficacy of persuasion in a hypothetical sales presentation. Language power and nonverbal immediacy were hypothesized to affect persuasiveness through the potentially powerful nature of both, and to have an interaction effect on persuasiveness. A sample of 211 undergraduate students at a Northwestern University voluntarily completed an online survey, which contained a video clip of a sales presentation. Each participant randomly viewed one of four video clips, which differed in terms of language power (high vs low) and nonverbal immediacy (high vs low). …

Effect Of Age And Vaccination On Extent And Spread Of Chlamydia Pneumoniae Infection In C57bl/6 Mice, Taylor Eddens, Sarah Beaudoin, Amanda Steinberger, Christopher Scott Little, Dawn Shell, Benjamin Wizel, Brian J. Balin Phd, Kerin L. Fresa-Dillon May 2012

Effect Of Age And Vaccination On Extent And Spread Of Chlamydia Pneumoniae Infection In C57bl/6 Mice, Taylor Eddens, Sarah Beaudoin, Amanda Steinberger, Christopher Scott Little, Dawn Shell, Benjamin Wizel, Brian J. Balin Phd, Kerin L. Fresa-Dillon

PCOM Scholarly Works

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular respiratory pathogen for humans. Infection by C. pneumoniae may be linked etiologically to extra-respiratory diseases of aging, especially atherosclerosis. We have previously shown that age promotes C. pneumoniae respiratory infection and extra-respiratory spread in BALB/c mice.

FINDINGS: Aged C57BL/6 mice had a greater propensity to develop chronic and/or progressive respiratory infections following experimental intranasal infection by Chlamydia pneumoniae when compared to young counterparts. A heptavalent CTL epitope minigene (CpnCTL7) vaccine conferred equal protection in the lungs of both aged and young mice. This vaccine was partially effective in protecting against C. …

Diet And Affinity From The Middle Neolithic To Early Bronze Age, Estremadura, Portugal: A Comparison Of Human Dental Remains From Feteira Ii And Bolores, Briana Christa Horwath May 2012

Diet And Affinity From The Middle Neolithic To Early Bronze Age, Estremadura, Portugal: A Comparison Of Human Dental Remains From Feteira Ii And Bolores, Briana Christa Horwath

Anthropology

The social and political changes accompanying the transition from the Neolithic through Early Bronze Age in southwestern Iberia are reasonably well understood; much less is known about population movements and dietary changes that accompanied these transformations. To address possible population movements and dietary change, human dental remains from the Middle Neolithic through Late Neolithic site of Feteira II (3600-2900 B.C.E) and the Late Neolithic through the Early Bronze Age site of Bolores (2800-1800 B.C.E) will be used to examine diet and affinity. Two hypotheses are tested: the period of social change was associated with dietary change between individuals interred at …

Population Continuity Or Replacement At Ancient Lachish? A Dental Affinity Analysis In The Levant, Clarissa R. Dicke-Toupin May 2012

Population Continuity Or Replacement At Ancient Lachish? A Dental Affinity Analysis In The Levant, Clarissa R. Dicke-Toupin

Anthropology

Are material culture changes between late Bronze and early Iron Age inhabitants of Lachish, in modern day Israel, the result of immigrants settling the region, or an in situ evolution of practices by the same indigenous peoples? The research objectives are to: 1) assess dental affinity of an Iron Age Lachish sample relative to its Bronze Age predecessor, and 2) compare data in both groups with European and North African comparative samples to estimate biological affinity within the Mediterranean area. In the process, two competing hypotheses are tested; one postulates continuity and the other population replacement between the Bronze and …

Insight Into The Diet History Of Ice Seals Using Isotopic Signatures Of Muscle Tissue And Claws, Sara Shanae Carroll May 2012

Insight Into The Diet History Of Ice Seals Using Isotopic Signatures Of Muscle Tissue And Claws, Sara Shanae Carroll

Marine Biology

Climate change and sea ice reduction in the Arctic may impact foraging of ice-associated predators. The goal of my thesis work was to examine interannual differences in the diet of ringed, bearded, spotted, and ribbon seals as described by stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios of muscle tissue and claws to assess foraging plasticity. Isotopic mixing models from muscle data were used to describe the proportional contribution of prey groups during 2003, 2008-2010. Results showed a higher proportional contribution of smelt (Osmeridae) and benthic prey to ringed and bearded seal diets in 2003 compared to 2008-2010. Seasonal keratin layers deposited …

Elevating Ascorbate Content In Tomato And Studying The Role Of Jasmonates In Modulating Ascorbate In Arabidopsis, Shashank S. Kulkarni May 2012

Elevating Ascorbate Content In Tomato And Studying The Role Of Jasmonates In Modulating Ascorbate In Arabidopsis, Shashank S. Kulkarni

Student Theses and Dissertations

Vitamin C (ascorbate, AsA) is the most abundant water soluble antioxidant in plants and is essential for plant and human health. Ascorbate plays a key role in protecting plants from reactive oxygen species generated during normal metabolic processes and under stress conditions including wounding, pathogen attack, salt, heat, light, and ozone exposure. Jasmonates (JAs), a group of plants hormones involved in stress responses also protect plants from these stresses. There is evidence indicating that JAs modulate AsA content in plants. The recent discovery of the inositol pathway has opened possibilities for AsA enhancement via metabolic engineering in plants. Over-expression of …

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Activated Cdc42 kinases (Acks) are evolutionarily conserved non-receptor tyrosine kinases. Activating somatic mutations and increased ACK1 protein levels have been found in many types of human cancers and correlate with a poor prognosis. ACK1 is activated by epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor signaling and functions to regulate EGF receptor turnover. ACK1 has additionally been found to propagate downstream signals through the phosphorylation of cancer relevant substrates. Using Drosophila as a model organism, we have determined thatDrosophila Ack possesses potent anti-apoptotic activity that is dependent on Ack kinase activity and is further activated by EGF receptor/Ras signaling. Ack anti-apoptotic signaling …

Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizers In Missouri Cotton Production, Andrea Phillips Jones May 2012

Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizers In Missouri Cotton Production, Andrea Phillips Jones

Student Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production. A standard fertilization practice for N in the Mid-South is a split application. However, a single N application at planting would potentially save fuel and labor cost. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of controlled release nitrogen (CRN) fertilizers applied to various soils relative to pre-plant and split application nitrogen fertilizer programs for cotton production. The study was conducted in 2010 and 2011 on a Bosket fine sandy loam, a Tiptonville silt loam soil, and a Sharkey clay soils. At each location, ten treatments …

Shoreline Distribution And Landscape Genetics Of Bears In A Recently Deglaciated Fjord: Glacier Bay, Alaska, Tania M. Lewis May 2012

Shoreline Distribution And Landscape Genetics Of Bears In A Recently Deglaciated Fjord: Glacier Bay, Alaska, Tania M. Lewis

Biological Sciences

To further knowledge of mammalian colonization patterns following deglaciation, I used occupancy modeling to estimate black and brown bear shoreline distribution of Glacier Bay and how these distributions relates to the number years of land exposure and post glacial plant and stream succession. I also conducted microsatellite genetic analysis of brown bear hair and tissue to determine contemporary population structure throughout the park and how it relates to landscape features and surrounding populations. Closed forest cover within 1 km of the study site was a strong positive predictor of black bear occurrence. Brown bears were detected at 100% of sites …

Central Co2 Chemosensitivity In Tadpoles: Impairment And The Role Of Serotonin, Spencer D. Audie May 2012

Central Co2 Chemosensitivity In Tadpoles: Impairment And The Role Of Serotonin, Spencer D. Audie

Biological Sciences

Nicotine and ethanol are known neuroteratogens and prenatal exposure correlates with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which is thought to result from failure to maintain pH homeostasis through respiratory adjustments. This failed homeostatic control is believed to be serotonergic in origin. In previous studies nicotine or ethanol exposure ablated the robust hypercapnic response of early-stage tadpoles. These findings lead us to question if the ablation occurred through a serotonindependent mechanism. This study investigated the role of serotonin (5- HT) in the nicotine- or ethanol-induced abolishment of the hypercapnic response. We found that toxin-exposed animals were insensitive to hypercapnia and also …

Community Involvement As A Tool For International Policy: Realizing The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, Michael D. Eriksen Jr. May 2012

Community Involvement As A Tool For International Policy: Realizing The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, Michael D. Eriksen Jr.

Honors Theses

Whether present in abundance or known for its scarcity, water defines the regional and geographical identities of people. It defines political and ecological boundaries globally. Water paucity and quality in burgeoning populations has been a catalyst for creative resource management policies. Conservation of water resources, in practice, has still not improved however. As a result, the health and stability of the Great Lakes as a natural resource is threatened. The Great Lakes region includes two countries, eight states, two provinces, and over 200 tribal and native influences. International agreements, such as the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 (BWT) and the …

Factors Affecting Survival Of Arctic-Breeding Dunlin (Calidris Alpina Arcticola) Adults And Chicks, Brooke Lynne Hill May 2012

Factors Affecting Survival Of Arctic-Breeding Dunlin (Calidris Alpina Arcticola) Adults And Chicks, Brooke Lynne Hill

Biological Sciences

Accurate estimates of, and identifying factors affecting, survival and productivity can provide insight into population trends and help determine what management actions would most benefit a population. Only limited demographic data are available for many Arctic-breeding shorebird species. I estimated survival probabilities for Arctic-breeding Dunlin (Calidris alpina arcticola); for adults between 2003 and 2010, and for chicks in 2008 and 2009. Adult apparent survival probabilities were higher for males (0.60 ± 0.04) than females (0.41 ± 0.05), were higher for individuals initiating nests earlier in the season, and yearly variation was high. These apparent survival rates appear insufficient to maintain …

The Taphonomy And Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Talkeetna Mountains Hadrosaur, Kevin P. Stack May 2012

The Taphonomy And Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Talkeetna Mountains Hadrosaur, Kevin P. Stack

Geosciences

The fossil record of hadrosauroids (Ornithopoda, Hadrosauroidea) from the Albian to Santonian is very sparse, with few described North American and Asian taxa compared to the diverse record of Campanian to Maastrichtian hadrosaurids. In 1994, the partial postcranial remains of a hadrosauriform dinosaur were found in the Matanuska Formation of southern Alaska. The Matanuska Formation is a thick succession of Albian¬to Maastrichtian-aged, dominantly marine, sediments deposited in a forearc basin along the actively accreting western North American margin. The Alaskan specimen is assigned a Turonian age based on molluscan biostratigraphy. The skeleton consists of postcranial elements including cervical, dorsal and …
