Scattered Data Interpolation On Embedded Submanifolds With Restricted Positive Definite Kernels: Sobolev Error Estimates, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady Wright Jun 2012

Scattered Data Interpolation On Embedded Submanifolds With Restricted Positive Definite Kernels: Sobolev Error Estimates, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady Wright

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we present error estimates for kernel interpolation at scattered sites on manifolds. The kernels we consider will be obtained by the restriction of positive definite kernels on Rd, such as radial basis functions, to a smooth, compact embedded submanifold M ⊂ Rd with no boundary. For restricted kernels having finite smoothness, we provide a complete characterization of the native space on M. After this and some preliminary setup, we present Sobolev-type error estimates for the interpolation problem for smooth and non-smooth kernels. In the case of non-smooth kernels, we provide error estimates for target …

The gastrointestinal tract harbors a complex and diverse microbiota that has an important role in host metabolism. Microbial diversity is influenced by a combination of environmental and host genetic factors and is associated with several polygenic diseases. In this study we combined next-generation sequencing, genetic mapping, and a set of physiological traits of the BXD mouse population to explore genetic factors that explain differences in gut microbiota and its impact on metabolic traits. Molecular profiling of the gut microbiota revealed important quantitative differences in microbial composition among BXD strains. These differences in gut microbial composition are influenced by host-genetics, which …

Children Of Assisted Reproduction, Kristine S. Knaplund Jun 2012

Children Of Assisted Reproduction, Kristine S. Knaplund

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

More than three decades after the birth of the first child conceived through in vitro fertilization, few states have comprehensive statutes to establish the parentage of children born using assisted reproduction techniques (ART). While thousands of such children are born each year courts struggle to apply outdated laws. For example, does a statute terminating paternity for a man who donates sperm to a married woman apply if the woman is unmarried? In 2008, the Uniform Probate Code (UPC) added two much-needed sections on the complicated parentage and inheritance issues that arise in the field of assisted reproduction. Yet it is …

A Fuzzy Qualitative Approach For Scene Classification, C.H. Lim, C.S. Chan Jun 2012

A Fuzzy Qualitative Approach For Scene Classification, C.H. Lim, C.S. Chan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Scene classification has been studied extensively in the recent past. Most of the state-of-the-art solutions assumed that scene classes are mutually exclusive. However, this is not true as a scene image may belongs to multiple classes and different people are tend to respond inconsistently even given a same scene image. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy qualitative approach to address this problem. That is, we first adopted the fuzzy quantity space to model the training data. Secondly, we present a novel weight function, w to train a fuzzy qualitative scene model in the fuzzy qualitative states. Finally, we introduce …

Beyond The Dream:Improving College-Readiness Of Underprepared Community College Students, Joan L. Kindle Jun 2012

Beyond The Dream:Improving College-Readiness Of Underprepared Community College Students, Joan L. Kindle

Dissertations

The majority of the nation’s first-year college students are not prepared to assume postsecondary level studies. Many are diverted to developmental education programs and most never attain postsecondary credentials. Educational reform is on the national agenda and challenges community colleges to address the growing lack of postsecondary achievement. The purpose of this instrumental multi-case study was to explore and analyze reformative strategies that effectively address college-readiness and achievement of underprepared community college students.

A qualitative methodology was employed in analyzing strategies implemented at community colleges to improve college-readiness. A criterion-based selection process identified six community colleges recognized by the Achieving …

Viscoelastic Anisotropic Finite Element Mixture Model Of Articular Cartilage Using Viscoelastic Collagen Fibers And Validation With Stress Relaxation Data, Matthew Alexander Griebel Jun 2012

Viscoelastic Anisotropic Finite Element Mixture Model Of Articular Cartilage Using Viscoelastic Collagen Fibers And Validation With Stress Relaxation Data, Matthew Alexander Griebel

Master's Theses

Experimental results show that collagen fibers exhibit stress relaxation under tension and a highly anisotropic distribution. To further develop the earlier model of Stender [1], the collagen constituent was updated to reflect its intrinsic viscoelasticity and anisotropic distribution, and integrated with an existing mixture model with glycosaminoglycans and ground substance matrix. A two-term Prony series expansion of the quasi-linear viscoelastic model was chosen to model the viscoelastic properties of the collagen fibers. Material parameters were determined by using the simplex method to minimize the sum of squared errors between model results and experimental stress relaxation data of tissue in tension. …

Comparing Anti-Vegf Antibodies And Aptamers On Paper Microfluidic-Based Platforms, Katherine Noel Clayton Jun 2012

Comparing Anti-Vegf Antibodies And Aptamers On Paper Microfluidic-Based Platforms, Katherine Noel Clayton

Master's Theses

The field of microfluidics is expanding into what is known as paper microfluidics. This uses a paper platform rather than materials (i.e. PDMS, PMMA) that are commonly used in microfluidics research. Current devices require an expensive manufacturing process and external sources to power the device. Such devices are not practical in low resource environments. As a consequence, it is the goal of this Thesis to develop a three-dimensional, multiplexed assay chip using nitrocellulose membranes. This device comprises of multiple layers of nitrocellulose membranes with defined fluidic channels. The multiple layers are bound together using double backed tape, and imbedded between …

Becoming Cittaslow: A City's Journey To Becoming A Cittaslow Member, Megan Alexis Elovich

Master's Theses

The project will explore Cittaslow as an alternative to traditional urban development. Sprawl and consumption of non-local resources are discouraged with Cittaslow and preservation of culture and history become the tangible benchmarks of the community. It will explore the history of Cittaslow as a movement and an organization; as well as its influences on existing member cities and the criteria used to distinguish them from others. The City of San Luis Obispo is used as a case study to determine whether existing conditions measure up to Cittaslow criteria.

ABSTRACT

Characterization Of Raw Milk Fouling On Plate-Type Heat Exchangers Using Different Alloys And Cow PhenotypeS

Stephen Ernest Nelson

Milk and other dairy products are widely used in many households today. Milk is a popular beverage that is seen as a healthy alternative to other synthetic beverages such as soda pop and other sugar based drinks. It became law that milk, and milk products are pasteurized before its release to the general public (FDA 2003). Pasteurization is a thermal process where the intent is to lower the concentration of microorganisms in the milk to render it safe to drink with …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) is a recently discovered virus infecting wheat (Triticum aestivum) in the Great Plains region of the United States. It is transmitted by wheat curl mites (Aceria tosichella) which also transmit Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and Wheat mosaic virus. In a greenhouse study, winter wheat ‘Millennium’ (WSMV susceptible) and ‘Mace’ (WSMV resistant) were mechanically inoculated with TriMV, WSMV, TriMV+WSMV, or sterile water at the two-leaf growth stage. At 28 days after inoculation, final chlorophyll meter (soil plant analysis development [SPAD]) readings, area under the SPAD progress curve (AUSPC), the number of …

Genetics Of Schizophrenia And Smoking: An Approach To Studying Their Comorbidity Based On Epidemiological Findings, Jose De Leon, Francisco J. Diaz

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

The association between schizophrenia and tobacco smoking has been described in more than 1,000 articles, many with inadequate methodology. The studies on this association can focus on: (1) current smoking, ever smoking or smoking cessation; (2) non-psychiatric controls or controls with severe mental illness (e.g., bipolar disorder); and (3) higher smoking frequency or greater usage in smokers. The association with the most potential for genetic studies is that between ever daily smoking and schizophrenia; it may reflect a shared genetic vulnerability. To reduce the number of false-positive genes, we propose a three-stage approach derived from epidemiological knowledge. In the first …

Plant extracts continue to represent an untapped source of renewable therapeutic compounds for the treatment and prevention of illnesses including chronic metabolic disorders. With the increase in worldwide obesity and its related morbidities, the need for identifying safe and effective treatments is also rising. As such, use of primary human adipose-derived stem cells represents a physiologically relevant cell system to screen for bioactive agents in the prevention and treatment of obesity and its related complications. By using these cells in a primary screen, the risk and cost of identifying artifacts due to interspecies variation and immortalized cell lines is eliminated. …

Vitronectin Inhibits Neutrophil Apoptosis Through Activation Of Integrin-Associated Signaling Pathways, Hong Beom Bae, Jaroslaw W. Zmijewski, Jessy S. Deshane, Degui Zhi, Lawrence C. Thompson, Cynthia B. Peterson, David D. Chaplin, Edward Abraham

Faculty Publications

Vitronectin is present in large concentrations in serum and the extracellular matrix. Although vitronectin is known to modulate neutrophil adhesion and chemotaxis, and to contribute to neutrophil-associated proinflammatory processes, a role in apoptosis has not been demonstrated. In thepresent studies, wefound that neutrophils demonstrated more rapid progression to spontaneous or TNF-related apoptosisinducing ligand-induced apoptosis when incubated under vitronectinfree conditions thanwhen vitronectinwas present. The ability of native vitronectin to delay neutrophil apoptosis was not recapitulated by the vitronectin somatomedin B domain. In contrast, inclusion of the cyclo[Arg-Gly-Asp-D-Phe-Val] peptide in cultures containing vitronectin resulted in enhanced neutrophil apoptosis, showing that the vitronectin RGD …

Imprinting Control Region (Icr) Of The Peg3 Domain, Joomyeong Kim, Muhammad B. Ekram, Hana Kim, Mohammad Faisal, Wesley D. Frey, Jennifer M. Huang, Kim Ngoc Tran, Michelle M. Kim, Sungryul Yu

Faculty Publications

The imprinting and transcription of the 500 kb genomic region surrounding the mouse Peg3 is predicted to be regulated by the Peg3-differentially methylated region (DMR). In the current study, this prediction was tested using a mutant mouse line lacking this potential imprinting control region (ICR). At the organismal level, paternal and maternal transmission of this knockout (KO) allele caused either reduced or increased growth rates in the mouse, respectively. In terms of the imprinting control, the paternal transmission of the KO allele resulted in bi-allelic expression of the normally maternally expressed Zim2, whereas the maternal transmission switched the transcriptionally dominant …

Public Health Regulation: The Impact Of Intersections Between Trade & Investment Treaties In Asia, Locknie Hsu Jun 2012

Public Health Regulation: The Impact Of Intersections Between Trade & Investment Treaties In Asia, Locknie Hsu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There has been an explosive growth of free trade agreements (FTAs) in recent years. The World Trade Report 2011 of the World Trade Organization (WTO) shows Asian members to be among the most active in signing preferential trade agreements. This unprecedented growth has attracted much academic and policy discussion on aspects such as their effects on trade liberalization, problems raised by specific trade and investment provisions, dispute settlement, and concerns over “regionalism”. Like such areas, public health regulation has been significantly affected by such treaties. FTAs, together with bilateral investment treaties (BITs), are rapidly forming a source of intersecting state …

It is important for language teachers to foster an environment in which all students feel safe, and while many of us think that we hold ourselves to this ideal, we may inadvertently be excluding students whose identity is not always visible. Whether we realize it or not, we very likely have students who identify as LGBTQ in our ESL classes. What are we doing to be considerate of their identity? When we present family vocabulary, do we provide language for same-sex partners? Do we allow for LGBTQ identities when we ask students to write or speak about their perfect boyfriend …

Feeding behavior and reproduction are coordinately regulated by the brain via neurotransmitters, circulating hormones, and neuropeptides. Reduced feeding allows animals to engage in other behaviors important for fitness, including mating and parental care. Some fishes cease feeding for weeks at a time in order to provide care to their young by brooding them inside the male or female parent's mouth. Maternal mouthbrooding is known to impact circulating hormones and subsequent reproductive cycles, but neither the full effects of food deprivation nor the neural mechanisms are known. Here we ask what effects mouthbrooding has on several physiological processes including gonad and …

The Evolution Of Reproductive Structures In Seed Plants: A Re-Examination Based On Insights From Developmental Genetics, Sarah Mathews, Elena M. Kramer Jun 2012

The Evolution Of Reproductive Structures In Seed Plants: A Re-Examination Based On Insights From Developmental Genetics, Sarah Mathews, Elena M. Kramer

Faculty Publications

The study of developmental genetics is providing insights into how plant morphology can and does evolve, and into the fundamental nature of specific organs. This new understanding has the potential to revise significantly the way we think about seed plant evolution, especially with regard to reproductive structures. Here, we have sought to take a step in bridging the divide between genetic data and critical fields such as paleobotany and systematics. We discuss the evidence for several evolutionarily important interpretations, including the possibility that ovules represent meristematic axes with their own type of lateral determinate organs (integuments) and a model that …

Reproductive proteins commonly show signs of rapid divergence driven by positive selection. The mechanisms driving these changes have remained ambiguous in part because interacting male and female proteins have rarely been examined. We isolate an egg protein the vitelline envelope receptor for lysin (VERL) from Tegula, a genus of free-spawning marine snails. Like VERL from abalone, Tegula VERL is a major component of the VE surrounding the egg, includes a conserved zona pellucida (ZP) domain at its C-terminus, and possesses a unique, negatively charged domain of about 150 amino acids implicated in interactions with the positively charged lysin. Unlike for …
