International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the last forty years the Charente river catchment on the Atlantic coast of France has experienced recurrent low river flows in summer, attributed to the increase in irrigated areas. This situation is inconsistent with the regional plan goals of good ecological status of the watershed and conflicts with the need for freshwater input in downstream coastal waters for oyster farming in the Marennes-Oléron bay. In this application of the SPICOSA (Science and Policy Integration for Coastal System Assessment) experiment, a new participatory approach for integrated assessment with local managers is explored in order to improve the regulation of freshwater …

Iedss As A Tool For The Integrated Assessment Of Conventional And Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Nutrient Removal, Rubén Reif, Manel Garrido-Baserba, Manel Poch Jul 2012

Iedss As A Tool For The Integrated Assessment Of Conventional And Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Nutrient Removal, Rubén Reif, Manel Garrido-Baserba, Manel Poch

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC states that wastewaters from populations higher than 2,000 people equivalent must receive appropriate treatment with the aim of improving the ecological status of the receiving aquatic environment. In this context, ‘appropriate treatment’ is defined as one that fulfils the quality standards set for the receiving waters. This stricter regulation suggest new dimensions of analysis where the affected environments and socioeconomic criteria, together with the characteristics of the available wastewater treatment technologies are to be taken into account for the design of new facilities and the upgrade of existing ones. Thus, in order to deal …

Not all stakeholders are convinced of thebenefits of the national park, and management of Doñana, its environs andwatershed are the subject of intense disagreement. This interplay between naturalcharacteristics of great value with intense human pressure makes …

Sustainability Indicators For River Water Quality Management In Urban Areas, C. Gualtieri, P. Amparo López-Jiménez Jul 2012

Sustainability Indicators For River Water Quality Management In Urban Areas, C. Gualtieri, P. Amparo López-Jiménez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In developed countries, the main problem of water management is the incompatibility between the average water quality, on the one hand, and the needs for ecosystem protection and the desirable water use or uses (i.e. recreation, water supply, agriculture, etc.), on the other. To achieve qualitative levels compatible with these two objectives, engineering controls are devised; such water quality criteria are often expressed by acceptable values of the parameters which represent health condition for the ecosystem. This is also taken into account in European and National legislations. These parameters could be easily linked to the concept of sustainability. Sustainable water …

An Agent-Based Modelling Approach To Project Future Habitat Suitability For North-Ern Spotted Owl In Central Oregon, Jennifer Koch, James M. Sulzman, John P. Bolte, Robert J. Pabst, Thomas A. Spies, Tim Sheehan, Keith A. Olsen, Jeffrey D. Kline

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Wildfires remain a major threat to Northern Spotted Owl habitat in Cen-tral Oregon, and there is an urgent need for tools to support the development of effective conservation planning strategies. We describe the managed forest eco-system in Central Oregon as a coupled human and natural system and apply the agent-based modelling framework ENVISION for quantifying the integrated effects of wildfires, vegetative succession, and human decisions regarding forest and fire management on the suitability of owl habitat. Our simulation results show that ENVISION is suitable for the simulation of complex system feedbacks and links over different spatial and temporal scale levels. …

Modelling Multi-Pollutant Fate In A Large River: Role Of Hydro-Morphological And Physicochemical Parameters, Cyril Garneau, Sabine Sauvage, José-Miguel Sanchez-Perez, Yi Hong, Dominique Aubert, Anne Probst Jul 2012

Modelling Multi-Pollutant Fate In A Large River: Role Of Hydro-Morphological And Physicochemical Parameters, Cyril Garneau, Sabine Sauvage, José-Miguel Sanchez-Perez, Yi Hong, Dominique Aubert, Anne Probst

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

European rivers are facing multiple sources of pollution, including metals, pesticides and nutrients. To understand the factors controlling their transport, modelling can be used to predict their fate. Usually, however, only one class of components is considered, often neglecting inner interactions. This paper proposes a methodological approach towards understanding the main processes describing the fate of trace pollutants interacting with hydrological processes and suspended solids. The model is evaluated in the middle course of the Garonne River in France and developed in three stages, each integrating a new type of process. The first describes the hydromorphology of the sector studied …

Simulation Of Redd+ Options Using Iiasa Model Framework, Mykola Gusti, Hannes Böttcher, Georg Kindermann, Petr Havlik, Michael Obersteiner

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We present a modeling framework for simulating afforestation, deforestation and sustainable forest management that is composed of an interlinked economic model and a spatially explicit forestry model. The linkage of models allows addressing a number of important issues relevant to REDD+, in particular, estimation of cross-country comparable CO2 mitigation potential for individual countries and selected activities, “carbon-leakage” problem, estimation of marginal abatement cost curves for the mitigation activities etc. We demonstrate the application of the model framework for development of marginal abatement cost curves and discuss the results.

Impacts Of Human Settlements On A Coastal Landscape: The Case Of Rio Verde Basin, Mexico, Cuitlahuac Hernandez-Santiago, Martin Volk, Joerg A. Priess

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Human settlements require natural resources to cover their needs for shelter, food, water, etc., which creates environmental impacts. This is particularly true for new rural settlements which obtain these resources from their nearby surroundings. Current analysis of land-use change has taken inhabited settlements as subject of study where population dynamics or socio-economic changes can be assessed. In the present study we analyse extent and patterns of land-use change found around four different types of settlements (permanent, intermittent, new and abandoned) in a coastal river basin in Mexico. The methodological steps of our investigation include analyses of a) multi-temporal land-use change, …

Integrated Ecological Modelling For Decision Support In The Integrated Urban Water System Modelling Of The Drava River (Varazdin, Croatia), Javier E. Holguin, Gert Everaert, Lorenzo Benedetti, Youri Amerlinck, Peter L. M. Goethals

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Legal physical-chemical emission limits are traditionally used forassessing the effectiveness of urban sanitation infrastructure. However, thereceiving water’s ecological aspects are disregarded with this conventionalapproach. European legislation (i.e. Water Framework Directive-WFD) now has anintegrated approach of river management, which considers the concept ofecological status. Furthermore, the WFD urges the adoption of a combined analysisof emission limits values and physical-chemical and ecological aspects of thereceiving waters and encourage the availability and use of decision support tools forwater management such as simulation models. Croatia has signed agreements tojoin the European Union (EU) and thus taken up the obligation to coordinate itslegislation with EU …

A Eu27 Database Of Daily Weather Data Derived From Climate Change Scenarios For Use With Crop Simulation Models, Marcello Donatelli, Davide Fumagalli, A. Zucchini, G. Duveiller, R. L. Nelson, B. Baruth Jul 2012

A Eu27 Database Of Daily Weather Data Derived From Climate Change Scenarios For Use With Crop Simulation Models, Marcello Donatelli, Davide Fumagalli, A. Zucchini, G. Duveiller, R. L. Nelson, B. Baruth

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Global Circulation Models (GCM) estimate future climate under scenarios of greenhouse gases emissions. Such estimates include several meteorological parameters but the two direct outputs are air temperature at earth surface and precipitation. The estimates are spatially downscaled using different methodologies, but it is accepted that such data require further processing for use with simulation models. Daily values of solar radiation, wind, air humidity, and at times rainfall may have absolute values which are not realistic, and/or the daily record of data may prove not to be consistent across meteorological variables. The final problem is related to the fact that GCM …

Communicating River Level Data And Information To Stakeholders With Different Interests: The Participative Development Of An Interactive Online Service, Kit (C. J. A) Macleod, Somayajulu G. Sripada, Antonio A. R. Ioris, Koen Arts, René Van Der Wal

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Increasing the effectiveness of how river level data are communicated to a range of stakeholders (individuals, groups and communities) with an interest in river level information is likely to result in greater use of data collected by regulatory agencies. A range of interest groups, like those involved in recreational pursuits such as angling and canoeing, require certain but different information on changes in river levels state to allow effective scheduling of their activities. A range of options have been developed for communicating river level data to different audiences, but those fail to address group heterogeneity and information demands. To a …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

An agri-environmental subsidy program that states water protection as one of its main objectives has been in place in Finland since 1995. The programme is the main tool within Water Framework Directive (WFD) to control nutrient load from agricultural areas in Finland. In this work we created story-lines for agricultural production influenced by climate change on a small agricultural catchment in southern Finland. We used dynamic, catchment scale model to simulate the influence of increased precipitation and temperature on runoff and nutrient leaching with and without different water protection methods, including the changes in production and field use. This study …

An Essay About The Functional Time Of Environmental Interfaces Regarded As Complex Biophysical Systems, Dragutin T. Mihailović, Igor Balaž Jul 2012

An Essay About The Functional Time Of Environmental Interfaces Regarded As Complex Biophysical Systems, Dragutin T. Mihailović, Igor Balaž

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the classical physics time is a continuous function eternally and evenly flowing as an absolute time dimension. However, the concept of “time‟s cycle” is commonly applied as a metaphor in the biological sciences. First, we shortly elaborated the issue of time in physics and biology and then we considered the term of the functional time that is formed only as a result of consistent change of qualitatively new states of concrete, final material objects and processes. Further, we described a model for signaling in the process of energy exchange between environmental interfaces (EIs), specifically using three EIs that send …

Quantitative Assessment Of Natural And Anthropogenic Factors In Forest Carbon Sequestration, Peter A. Khaiter, Marina G. Erechtchoukova

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The ability of the ecosystems to generate services is vital for humanwell-being, economic development and even survival. The production ofecosystem services is influenced by a complex interplay of natural andanthropogenic factors. Quantitative assessment of the ecosystem services as wellas natural and anthropogenic factors affecting them is a crucial aspect ofsustainable environmental development and management. The paper discusses atheoretical framework for quantifying ecosystem services and their changes inresponse to natural and anthropogenic factors on the basis of a meta-modellingapproach. The effect of anthropogenic factors on the ecosystem components andservices is modelled using corresponding transformation functions. Forestecosystems and their services, with a …

Integrated Assessment Of Mitigation Strategies Using An Agent-Based Model Of The Linked Energy, Economic, And Climate System, M. D. Gerst, P. Wang, A. Roventini, G. Dosi, R. B. Howarth, M. E. Borsuk Jul 2012

Integrated Assessment Of Mitigation Strategies Using An Agent-Based Model Of The Linked Energy, Economic, And Climate System, M. D. Gerst, P. Wang, A. Roventini, G. Dosi, R. B. Howarth, M. E. Borsuk

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

An alternative to the typical application of rational choice models to climate policy is the coupling of agent-based modeling and exploratory approaches. Agent-based models (ABMs) represent the world as made up of heterogeneous, boundedly-rational agents who act in their own interests and yet engage in substantive communication. Rather than focusing on optimal outcomes, agent-based models are primarily concerned with the evolution of large-scale properties that ‘emerge’ from the lower-level behavior. Consequently, ABMs have the potential to address complex system properties and generate a wider array of plausible storylines than more traditional integrated assessment modeling methodologies. We provide an overview of …

Potential Response Of Soil-Borne Fungal Pathogens Affecting Crops To A Scenario Of Climate Change In Europe, L. M. Manici, Marcello Donatelli, Davide Fumagalli, A. Lazzari, S. Bregaglio

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A study was carried out on the potential response of soil-borne pathogens causing crop yield losses under a climate change scenario in Europe. A controlled chamber set of experiments was carried out to quantify pathogen response to temperature using pure colonies of three soil-borne fungi, representative of low (Fusarium nivale), medium-high (Athelia rolfsii) and high (Macrophomina phaseolina) temperature requirements. A generic model to simulate fungal growth response to temperature based on these experiments was developed and linked to a soil temperature model component, and to components to simulate soil water content accounting for crop water uptake of potential hosts. Pathogens …

Interdependence Of Mitigation, Adaptation And Sustainable Development, D. E. Reusser, Tabea Lissner, Luis Costa, Flavio Augusto Pinto Siabatto, Anselmo Garcia Cantu Ros, Jürgen Kropp

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Managing the interdependence of climate mitigation, adaptation and sustainable development requires a good understanding of the dominant sociotechnical and earth system processes that have determined the pathways in the past. Key variables include for example water and food availability which depend on climate and overall ecosystem services, as well as energy supply and social, political and economic conditions. Here we attempt an overview of existing model components and globally available data sources and look for gaps in existing approaches. This overview lies the foundation for building a model at the country level that integrates mitigation and adaptation with the ultimate …

Dles Framework For Spatially-Explicit Simulation Modelling: General Description And Some Exemplary Applications, Maria Bezrukova, Vladimir Shanin, Yulia Khoraskina, Alexey Mikhailov

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

DLES is a component-based framework integrating forest and soil simulation models with discrete spatial and temporal resolution. The task was to create the framework facilitating combination of stand-alone models of different spatial and temporal resolution with spatial interactions into the unified system, replacing models and comparing models against each other. Also, the feedbacks between these models can be implemented. The main features of the suggested approach are: 1) the system of models isn’t a ‘monolithic program’ (single executable file), but is a number of stand-alone modules that can be easily added to the system and removed from it; 2) modules …

Modelling Large Scale Invasion Of New Species Under Temperature Change By Reaction-Diffusion Equations, O. Richter, Wenkui He Jul 2012

Modelling Large Scale Invasion Of New Species Under Temperature Change By Reaction-Diffusion Equations, O. Richter, Wenkui He

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Due to human migration and climate change invasion of alien species has been observed in Europe. Recently, the mosquito Aedes albopictus has invaded the south of France. The spatial-temporal dynamics of invasion is studied in dependence of temperature and predation pressure of the resident ecosystem. The main elements population dynamics, predation and dispersal are combined in a coherent approach based on a system of coupled reaction diffusion equations for the aquatic and winged phase. The nonlinear reaction terms comprise a population dynamic model with temperature dependent reproduction rates and a predation term. The effect of temperature and predation pressure on …

Relative Importance Of Secondary Settling Tank Models In Wwtp Simulations – A Global Sensitivity Analysis Using Bsm2, Elham Ramin, Xavier Flores-Alsina, Gürkan Sin, Krist V. Gernaey, Ulf Jeppsson, Peter Steen Mikkelsen, Benedek Gy Plósz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Results obtained in a study using the Benchmark Simulation Model No. 1 (BSM1) show that a one-dimensional secondary settling tank (1-D SST) model structure and its parameters are among the most significant sources of uncertainty in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) simulations [Ramin et al., 2011]. The sensitivity results consistently indicate that the prediction of sludge production is most sensitive to the variation of the settling parameters. In the present study, we use the Benchmark Simulation Model No. 2 (BSM2), a plant-wide benchmark, that combines the Activated Sludge Model No. 1 (ASM1) with the Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1). We …

Web-Based Foss Environment Decision Support Systems For Odense River Basin In Denmark, Xuan Zhu, Ann Van Griensven, Yunqing Xuan, Arthur E. Mynett

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Complicated model structure and time consuming simulations increase the use of models in decision making process when the stakeholders are not familiar with the tools. Therefore, the user interface (UI) design for decision support system (DSS) should not only maintain the scientific model structure but also simplify the interaction with models and the need for easy access. Nowadays, web-based techniques have been developed so fast and Web 2.0 brings the time when web-based systems challenge the desktop applications. This technology also needs to be taken into account in the DSS development for water resource management because the stakeholders are spatial …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Water Availability And Crop Yield In Germany, Shaochun Huang, Valentina Krysanova, Fred Hattermann

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Under a warmer climate, crop growth and crop yield could be affected by many factors (e.g. increasing temperatures, CO2 fertilization and lower water supply) either positively or negatively. The present study aims in a) projecting the future water availability and low flow conditions in the five largest river basins in Germany, b) investigating the impact of climate change and CO2 fertilization on crop yield, and c) studying the potential of having two yields (e.g. winter wheat – summer barley) per year under a warmer climate. The eco-hydrological model SWIM (Soil and Water Integrated Model) was driven by four regional climate …

Species Distribution Modelling And Open Source Gis: Why Are They Still So Loosely Connected?, Anne Ghisla, Duccio Rocchini, Markus Neteler, Michael Forster, Birgit Kleinschmit

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Species Distribution Models (SDMs) are correlative models that use environmental and/or geographical information to explain patterns of species occurrences. Those models are being used in various fields including climate change, invasive species research, evolutionary biology and epidemiology. Thanks to the availability of increasing computational resources, new methods continue to be developed. However, software packages that include the SDM algorithms usually focus on one or few methods, and have different degrees of integration with other geographical and statistical software. Specifically, SDM implementations are often standalone programs developed by university laboratories, either as extensions to statistical software. In few cases they are …

Semi-Automatic Delimitation Of Buffer Zones For Protected Areas: A Contribution From Species Distribution Modelling, Cuitlahuac Hernandez-Santiago, Martin Volk

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Preservation of natural protected areas in Mexico requires human activities regulation in the Buffer Zones (Zona de Influencia). These zones have been defined conceptually by law and delineated spatially using physiographical and anthropogenic criteria. The presented study proposes a demarcation based on species distribution modeling as an ecological criterion to prioritize environmental requirements of protected species in “Laguna de Chacahua” National Park. To achieve this, a model in ArcGIS ModelBuilder was developed and applied for the delimitation of a buffer zone for the National Park. The proposed model involve a) obtaining data of 90 species (mammals, reptiles and amphibians) of …

Particles In The Cloud – Running Gis-Based Particle Tracking Models For Fish Larval Dissemination In Traditional And Cloud Computing Architectures, Tiffany C. Vance, Kyle Wilcox Jul 2012

Particles In The Cloud – Running Gis-Based Particle Tracking Models For Fish Larval Dissemination In Traditional And Cloud Computing Architectures, Tiffany C. Vance, Kyle Wilcox

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Models provide a way to understand the complex interactions of biological and physical process. As an example, the movement of dust plumes generated on continents over the adjoining oceans can be modeled for both the physical process of particle transport and for the geochemical effects of the dust deposition on life in the oceans. Models can also describe and link two physical processes; a model can be used to simulate the complex 3-dimensional movement of ocean currents and these model results can be linked to models that predict the movement of many waterborne objects such as fish and larvae, oil …

The Gsa-Glue Approach For Uncertainty Assessment Of An Integrated Mbr Model, A. Cosenza, G. Mannina, G. Viviani

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the recent literature, the uncertainty of wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) modelling has had relevant interest both for designers and operators.Indeed, the frequent data lacking and the need to improve process knowledge, incase of innovative technologies, make the use of mathematical models moreuncertain. Therefore, the need to make model uncertainty more explicit is warmlyrecommended. However, only few applications of uncertainty analysis in thewastewater field have been carried out. In this work, the combination of the globalsensitivity analysis (GSA) and the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation(GLUE) is applied for the uncertainty assessment of a WWTP model, in order todiscuss and verify its applicability. …
