Methods Of Treating Ovarian Cancer By Modulating Snon, Meera Nanjundan, Gordon Mills, Dawn Smith Jul 2012

Methods Of Treating Ovarian Cancer By Modulating Snon, Meera Nanjundan, Gordon Mills, Dawn Smith

USF Patents

Genomic analysis of ovarian cancers demonstrated a regional chromosomal increase in expression and gene duplication. TGF-β stimulation indicated a link between SnoN RNA and TGF-β. In TIOSE, SnoN protein levels were reduced 15 min post TGF-β-stimulation, likely by proteosome-mediated degradation. SnoN inhibition decreased cell growth between 20 and 50% concurrent with increased p21 levels. Stable expression of SnoN led to growth arrest through induction of senescence. Collectively, these results implicate SnoN levels in multiple roles during ovarian carcinogenesis: promoting cellular proliferation in ovarian cancer cells and as a positive mediator of cell cycle arrest and senescence in non-transformed ovarian epithelial …

A River Of Voices: Confluences And Cross-Currents In The Discourse Of The Colorado River, Paul Formisano Jul 2012

A River Of Voices: Confluences And Cross-Currents In The Discourse Of The Colorado River, Paul Formisano

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation argues that the Colorado River and its watershed face a crisis of representation as privileged nineteenth-century myths portraying the American West as a frontier, garden, and wilderness have limited an understanding of what and whom the river is for. It examines the contribution of tributary voices' or the lesser known perspectives from the region to reveal new lines of thinking about this river and its surroundings as they engage the traditional views of the river shaped by these myths. The voices examined at length in this study include contemporary nature writer Craig Childs, recent female boating narratives by …

Background: Rescue or correction of CFTR function in native epithelia is the ultimate goal of CF therapeutics development. Wild-type (WT) CFTR introduction and replacement is also of particular interest. Such therapies may be complicated by possible CFTR self-assembly into an oligomer or multimer. Results: Surprisingly, functional CFTR assays in native airway epithelia showed that the most common CFTR mutant, ΔF508-CFTR (ΔF-CFTR), inhibits WT-CFTR when both forms are co-expressed. To examine more mechanistically, both forms of CFTR were transfected transiently in varying amounts into IB3-1 CF human airway epithelial cells and HEK-293 human embryonic kidney cells null for endogenous CFTR protein …

A Mother's Love: A Narrative Analysis Of Food Advertisements In An African American Targeted Women's Magazine, Janine Danielle Beahm

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how food advertisers contributed to the cultural identity of the "good mother" in the 1990s and 2000s. It expands on previous research that investigated traditional gender ideologies in food advertisements by narrowing in on the specific stories presented to African American women. It highlights a time when advertisers were responding to the demands of African American activists to recognize the African American consumer, and depict African American characters in a positive light. A narrative method of inquiry is utilized to deconstruct the stories in 117 food advertisements running in Essence magazine (an African American targeted women's magazine) …

Production Of Bioactive Secondary Metabolites By Florida Harmful Bloom Dinoflagellates Karenia Brevis And Pyrodinium Bahamense, Cheska Burleson Jul 2012

Production Of Bioactive Secondary Metabolites By Florida Harmful Bloom Dinoflagellates Karenia Brevis And Pyrodinium Bahamense, Cheska Burleson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the critical role algae serve as primary producers, increases or accumulation of certain algae may result in Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Algal toxins from these blooms contribute significantly to incidences of food borne illness, and evidence suggests HABs are expanding in frequency and distribution. Mitigation of these HABs without knowledge of the ecological purpose and biochemical regulation of their toxins is highly unlikely. The production, function, and potential of secondary metabolites produced by the dinoflagellates Karenia brevis and Pyrodinium bahamense, were investigated.

Brevetoxins were demonstrated by two different methods to localize within the cytosol of Karenia brevis. …

Seasonal Influent Characterization, Model Calibration, Srt And Energy Usage For Nitrogen Removal At A Full Scale Wastewater Plant, Roozbeh Raoufi Jul 2012

Seasonal Influent Characterization, Model Calibration, Srt And Energy Usage For Nitrogen Removal At A Full Scale Wastewater Plant, Roozbeh Raoufi

Civil Engineering ETDs

This study focused on factors affecting biological denitrification in wastewater treatment. Denitrification is a process in which heterotrophic bacteria use nitrate as an electron acceptor (in the absence of oxygen) and organic carbon as an electron donor (commonly measured as chemical oxygen demand, or COD). The availability of sufficient COD is commonly the limiting factor for denitrification at many wastewater plants, with some plants having to purchase external carbon sources (such as acetic acid) to meet stringent nitrogen limits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different primary effluent characteristics (COD components), solid retention times (SRTs), …

Selective Salt Recovery From Reverse Osmosis Concentrate Using Inter-Stage Ion Exchange, Joshua E. Goldman Jul 2012

Selective Salt Recovery From Reverse Osmosis Concentrate Using Inter-Stage Ion Exchange, Joshua E. Goldman

Civil Engineering ETDs

A treatment process for reverse osmosis concentrate was developed to recover selected salts and increase fresh water recovery. The process utilizes cation and anion exchange to exchange all ions in the concentrate stream for sodium and chloride. The sodium chloride stream, with reduced scaling potential, can be treated further by a second reverse osmosis stage or another volume reduction technique to recover additional fresh water. The resulting concentrated sodium chloride stream can be used as ion exchange regeneration solution. Regeneration solutions from the cation and anion exchange columns are mixed to precipitate specific salts. In order to demonstrate the concepts …

Lost In Translation: Threatened Species In Australia, Jacqueline Williams, Amanda Kennedy, Donna Craig Jul 2012

Lost In Translation: Threatened Species In Australia, Jacqueline Williams, Amanda Kennedy, Donna Craig

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

Australia is currently experiencing an unprecedented expansion of mining activities into previously unaffected rural regions, encroaching lands of high environmental and agricultural value. Coal seam gas and significant underground mining of rare and precious metals also threaten surface and groundwater resources. Australia’s environmental laws are ill equipped to respond and sufficiently manage these new land-use conflicts giving rise to a greater risk of adverse environmental and social impacts. These new land-use conflicts involve very complex institutional issues in particular new players competing for scarce natural resources. The mining industry is perceived as a powerful and often government-supported player as mining …

Environmental Law, Governance, And Management- The Need For Environmental Management Systems For Cities, Lye Lin Heng Jul 2012

Environmental Law, Governance, And Management- The Need For Environmental Management Systems For Cities, Lye Lin Heng

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

Human activities damage the environment. They deplete natural resources, generate pollution and wastes, accelerate the loss of forests and biological diversity, as well as threaten the water supply. As populations increase, these problems are exacerbated. Cities bear the brunt of increased human activities on limited land space with limited resources. It is therefore essential that cities adopt a system of environmental governance that will help ensure sustainability. As each city has its own mix of geographic, social, economic, political and environmental problems, it would be simplistic to suggest that there is a formula for sustainability that would fit every city. …

Rio +20: What Difference Has Two Decades Made To State Practice In The Regulation Of Invasive Species, Sophie Riley Jul 2012

Rio +20: What Difference Has Two Decades Made To State Practice In The Regulation Of Invasive Species, Sophie Riley

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

Invasive alien species (IAS) are alien species that threaten ecosystems, habitats or other species. Article 8(h) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) requires the contracting parties to ‘prevent the introduction of or control or eradicate those alien species that threaten ecosystems, habitats or species’. Members are also required to lodge national reports with the secretariat of the CBD, specifying how they are fulfilling their international obligations with respect to IAS. While the threats to biodiversity posed by IAS have been extensively documented, to date no study has examined States’ perceptions of their own IAS regimes. This paper collects and …

Fishing-Related Mortality, The Precautionary Principle And The Law In New Zealand, Nicola Wheen Jul 2012

Fishing-Related Mortality, The Precautionary Principle And The Law In New Zealand, Nicola Wheen

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

Measures to reduce fishing-related mortality of marine animals in New Zealand fisheries may be installed under legislation including the Fisheries Act 1996. Thus, a reserve has been made and a mortality limit has, until very recently, been set each year to protect New Zealand sea lions around their Auckland Islands breeding ground. These sea lions once bred all around the coastline of New Zealand but, decimated by hunting, the species’ range is now restricted to three breeding colonies in the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands. In recognition of this and an estimated population decline of 50 percent in the last ten years …

Otherness, Justice, And Jus Gentium: The Legally Binding Value Of The Earth Charter For The Protection Of Human Rights, Ricardo Libel Waldman Jul 2012

Otherness, Justice, And Jus Gentium: The Legally Binding Value Of The Earth Charter For The Protection Of Human Rights, Ricardo Libel Waldman

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

This paper aims to find, in an international document, the Earth Charter, an example of a declaration of principles required to an international environmental law pact. It will be done based on Martin Buber’s dialogical principle. Also, it is intended to argue that Earth Charter, exactly because of this is legally biding as jus gentium.

Well, there are, according to Buber, three ways of meeting between Me and Thou, a) humans and non-human nature, b) humans and humans and c) and Eternal. These meetings are the basis for the three forms of Justice mentioned in Earth Charter according to …

Antigone In The Anthropocene: From Neoliberalism To A New Conservation Ethic, Elaine Hsiao Jul 2012

Antigone In The Anthropocene: From Neoliberalism To A New Conservation Ethic, Elaine Hsiao

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

The global environmental outlook is increasingly bleak and the human condition does not fare better. The IUCN Red List of endangered species is longer than ever, with predictions foretelling the greatest mass extinction since the dinosaurs.[1] Human development reports reflect growth but do not measure well-being, deep inequality or apathy.[2] A hundred years ago, North America was coming out of a war fought overseas and entering an era of fossil fuel electrified industrialization. It was claimed that economic 'progress' would inspire efficient use of resources, but rather what it transpired was reckless waste of natural capital and an …

Governance And Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, Jose Augusto Fontoura Costa, Solange Teles Da Silva, Fernanda Sola Jul 2012

The Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT) signed on 3 July 1978 by Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, has the objective to promote joint actions towards the harmonious development of the Amazon Basin as well as “the preservation of the environment, and the conservation and rational utilization of the natural resources of those territories” (art. I). In 1995, the eight nations decided to create the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) in order to strengthen and implement the cooperation and the Treaty goals. The amendment to ACT was approved on 2002, and the Permanent Secretariat was established in Brasilia …

Linkage In 21st Century Global Environmental Governance, Andrew Long Jul 2012

Linkage In 21st Century Global Environmental Governance, Andrew Long

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

The apex of formal international law development to address environmental issues may have occurred in the 1990s, as evidenced by the difficulty in negotiating a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, but the increasing globalization of environmental law creates opportunities for regulatory innovation at the international level that may prove more successful than “traditional” state-to-state international law. A key characteristic of globalization in any field is increasing linkage, which includes linkage of national and international law and greater understanding of the linkages between nations that require coordinated management of common issues. For this reason, among others, globalization of environmental law appears …

The Unep Regional Seas Programme: Bridging The Governance Gap, Nilufer Oral Jul 2012

The Unep Regional Seas Programme: Bridging The Governance Gap, Nilufer Oral

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

One of the important outcomes of the historic 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE) forty years ago was the establishment of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the UNEP Regional Seas Programme. Today the UNEP Regional Seas Programmes, with eighteen regional seas programmes under its auspices, has created an institutional and governance framework for the protection and preservation of the marine environment based on state co-operation at the regional level. Ideally, under the centralized and coordinated administration of UNEP each regional sea programme should have a standardized regional framework of governance based on the best available …

The Contribution Of Local Conventions To The Effectiveness Of Environmental Law In Burkina Faso, Habib Ahmed Djiga Jul 2012

The Contribution Of Local Conventions To The Effectiveness Of Environmental Law In Burkina Faso, Habib Ahmed Djiga

Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads

Burkina Faso, a small country in West Africa, is hard struck by desertification, drought, rainfall irregular, land degradation, competitions related to access and management of natural resources. These environmental challenges have provoked food insecurity and increasing poverty. These difficulties exacerbate the harsh living conditions of communities, accentuate their vulnerability to climate change and increase conflicts over natural resource use.

Facing to this context, the Burkinabe State authorities have taken action to protect the environment that led to the development of environmental law. They have indeed adopted rule of laws, established strategies, programs and action plans, and ratified international treaties related …
