Selaginella Moellendorffii Telomeres: Conserved And Unique Features In An Ancient Land Plant Lineage, Eugene V. Shakirov, Dorothy E. Shippen

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Telomeres, the essential terminal regions of linear eukaryotic chromosomes, consist of G-rich DNA repeats bound by a plethora of associated proteins. While the general pathways of telomere maintenance are evolutionarily conserved, individual telomere complex components show remarkable variation between eukaryotic lineages and even within closely related species. The recent genome sequencing of the lycophyte Selaginella moellendorffii and the availability of an ever-increasing number of flowering plant genomes provides a unique opportunity to evaluate the molecular and functional evolution of telomere components from the early evolving non-seed plants to the more developmentally advanced angiosperms. Here we analyzed telomere sequence in S. …

Transmittable Turnover: The Contagious Nature Of 'Water Cooler' Conversations In Organizations., Julie Irene Hancock Jul 2012

Transmittable Turnover: The Contagious Nature Of 'Water Cooler' Conversations In Organizations., Julie Irene Hancock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Job affect, mobility, and labor market conditions have long been studied as predictors of employee turnover. While these relations have been strongly supported, there are a number of other factors that have not been considered within the turnover literature. In particular, the means by which individuals develop labor market perceptions via referent others and how this influences turnover have not been examined. This dissertation explores employee turnover by integrating the social contagion literature with that of social networks, examining the effects that network characteristics, such as number of ties, degree of closeness with ties, and frequency of communication with ties, have …

A Transactional Model Of Job Insecurity, Personality, And Coping, Alaina Courtney Keim Jul 2012

A Transactional Model Of Job Insecurity, Personality, And Coping, Alaina Courtney Keim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The current study examines the role personality plays in influencing how people cope with job insecurity by utilizing the theory of psychological contracts. Specifically, this study examines the extent to which personality moderates the relation between job insecurity and coping strategies. Also, the relation between job insecurity and job attitudes (i.e., job satisfaction and job security satisfaction) are addressed. Lastly, the possibility that the relation between job insecurity and important organizational outcomes (i.e., organizational citizenship behavior (OCBs) and counterproductive work behavior) are moderated by different coping strategies is considered. Participants included undergraduate students who were employed at least part-time. Results …

Integrated Analysis Of Hydrothermal Flow Through Pretreatment, Veronique Archambault-Leger, Xiongjun Shao, Lee R. Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

The impact of hydrothermal flowthrough (FT) pretreatment severity on pretreatment and solubilization performance metrics was evaluated for three milled feedstocks (corn stover, bagasse, and poplar) and two conversion systems (simultaneous saccharification and fermentation using yeast and fungal cellulase, and fermentation by Clostridium thermocellum).

Results:

Compared to batch pretreatment, FT pretreatment consistently resulted in higher XMG recovery, higher removal of non-carbohydrate carbon and higher glucan solubilization by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). XMG recovery was above 90% for FT pretreatment below 4.1 severity but decreased at higher severities, particularly for bagasse. Removal of non-carbohydrate carbon during FT pretreatment increased …

Singing Japan’S Heart And Soul: A Discourse On The Black Enka Singer Jero And Race Politics In Japan, Neriko Musha Doerr, Yuri Kumagai

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

This article analyses a discourse around the ascendancy of Jero, an ‘African-American’ male dressed in hip-hop attire singing enka, a genre of music that has been dubbed ‘the heart and soul of Japan.’ Since his debut in Japan in February 2008, Jero has attracted much media attention. This article analyses a prominent discourse, ‘Jero is almost Japanese because he sings enka well.’ While many argue that to challenge stereotypes and racism is to introduce alternative role models, we show that such alternative role models can also reinforce the existing regime of difference of Japanese vs. the Other and perpetuate …

The Utilization Of Context To Adapt The Interface Of A Computer, Ludovic Delaveau

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

This research examines the possibility for a computer to adapt its interface and its settings to the current environment, through the notion of situations and corresponding profiles. These situations are group of context elements and tasks or activities performed in that operating conditions, such as the activities conducted at the workplace or the relaxation time at home. The profiles are set of configuration values for the computer, such as the network services. Adapting the computer serves the user as it takes care of putting his computer in the right mode to be efficient in the activity performed. In order to …

Scandinavian Inter-Library Co-Operation In Computer-Based Sdi Services And The Online Use Of Inis For User Training, Elin Törnudd

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Technological university libraries in the Scandinavian countries often have a dual function as university libraries and as national central libraries of technology. This applies to Helsinki University of Technology Library which, in conformity with statutory law, extends its services to any institution, enterprise or individual requiring scientific and technical information. The national responsibility includes library services and information services as well as user training. The daily routine therefore includes the provision of reference services and manual literature searches for industrial users. These, however, do not satisfy the current awareness needs of scientists and engineers engaged in research and development.

The Effect Of Increased Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Activation Of Ppar Pathways In A Mouse Model Of Aging, Lloye M. Dillon Jul 2012

The Effect Of Increased Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Activation Of Ppar Pathways In A Mouse Model Of Aging, Lloye M. Dillon

Open Access Dissertations

Aging is the progressive decline in cellular, tissue and organ function. The mitochondrial theory of aging suggests that the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations leads to mitochondrial dysfunction, loss of organ function and consequently a decrease in lifespan. This theory is appealing as there is a correlation between age-dependent alterations in mtDNA and an increased risk for developing cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders and myopathy. To further investigate the role of mtDNA mutations in aging, the mtDNA mutator mouse, a mouse model with a proof-reading deficient mtDNA polymerase γ (POLG) was created. These mice have a premature aging phenotype and …

A New Body Shape Index Predicts Mortality Hazard Independently Of Body Mass Index, Nir Y. Krakauer, Jesse C. Krakauer Jul 2012

A New Body Shape Index Predicts Mortality Hazard Independently Of Body Mass Index, Nir Y. Krakauer, Jesse C. Krakauer

Publications and Research

Background Obesity, typically quantified in terms of Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding threshold values, is considered a leading cause of premature death worldwide. For given body size (BMI), it is recognized that risk is also affected by body shape, particularly as a marker of abdominal fat deposits. Waist circumference (WC) is used as a risk indicator supplementary to BMI, but the high correlation of WC with BMI makes it hard to isolate the added value of WC. Methods and Findings We considered a USA population sample of 14,105 non-pregnant adults () from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) …

A Multi-Scale Approach For Characterizing Habitat Selection Of Tidal Creek Fish In Charlotte Harbor, Florida, Renee M. Duffey Jul 2012

A Multi-Scale Approach For Characterizing Habitat Selection Of Tidal Creek Fish In Charlotte Harbor, Florida, Renee M. Duffey

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

This study supplemented existing fish catch data by assessing habitat characteristics in four tidal creeks in Charlotte Harbor. Habitat and fish data were analyzed to determine spatial patterns at three different spatial scales; at the smallest mesohabitat scale, between segments within each creek, and at the largest scale between creeks. Fish abundance and diversity were calculated from fish catch data collected by Mote Marine Laboratory from 2005 through 2009. Twenty-three habitat variables were derived from data collected during field surveys and via GIS analyses. Field sampling methodology was adapted from the MesoHABSIM approach to delineate eleven habitat types at the …

Stochastic Models Of Human Kidney Cancer, Yanan Wu Jul 2012

Stochastic Models Of Human Kidney Cancer, Yanan Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation is focused on the development of stochastic models for carcinogenesis of human kidney cancer. Based on recent biological studies, we have developed a multiple-pathway stochastic model for the human pediatric kidney cancer - Wilms' tumor. To account for hereditary cancer cases and the development of non-hereditary cancers through two different pathways in the stochastic model, we have also developed a generalized mixture model. In this mixture model, two mixing probability distributions were applied, which are a multinomial distribution to explain the genetic segregation of the stage-limiting tumor suppressor genes and a binomial distribution to account for the development …

Evaluation Of Cerebellar-Cortical Circuitry Using Rodent Models: Relevance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Tiffany Danielle Rogers Jul 2012

Evaluation Of Cerebellar-Cortical Circuitry Using Rodent Models: Relevance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Tiffany Danielle Rogers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While the etiology of autism is unknown, current research indicates that abnormalities of the cerebellum, now believed to be involved in cognitive function, and the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are associated with autism. The current paper proposes that impaired cerebello-cortical circuitry could, at least in part, underlie autistic symptoms. The evidence linking the cerebellum to autism and rodent models useful for elucidating etiological factors in autism as well as their potential impact on cerebello-cortical circuitry are reviewed. Recent research has demonstrated in wildtype mice that stimulation of the dentate nucleus of the cerebellum (DN) evokes dopamine release in the medial prefrontal …

A Pseudo-Trna Modulates Antibiotic Resistance In Bacillus Cereus, Theresa E. Rogers, Sandro F. Ataide, Kiley Dare, Assaf Katz, Stephanie Seveau, Hervé Roy, Michael Ibba Jul 2012

A Pseudo-Trna Modulates Antibiotic Resistance In Bacillus Cereus, Theresa E. Rogers, Sandro F. Ataide, Kiley Dare, Assaf Katz, Stephanie Seveau, Hervé Roy, Michael Ibba

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Bacterial genomic islands are often flanked by tRNA genes, which act as sites for the integration of foreign DNA into the host chromosome. For example, Bacillus cereus ATCC14579 contains a pathogenicity island flanked by a predicted pseudo-tRNA, tRNAOther, which does not function in translation. Deletion of tRNAOther led to significant changes in cell wall morphology and antibiotic resistance and was accompanied by changes in the expression of numerous genes involved in oxidative stress responses, several of which contain significant complementarities to sequences surrounding tRNAOther. This suggested that tRNAOther might be expressed as part of a larger RNA, and RACE analysis …

Mechanical Stretch And Pi3k Signaling Link Cell Migration And Proliferation To Coordinate Epithelial Tubule Morphogenesis In The Zebrafish Pronephros, Aleksandr Vasilyev, Yan Liu, Nathan Hellman, Narendra Pathak, Iain A. Drummond Jul 2012

Mechanical Stretch And Pi3k Signaling Link Cell Migration And Proliferation To Coordinate Epithelial Tubule Morphogenesis In The Zebrafish Pronephros, Aleksandr Vasilyev, Yan Liu, Nathan Hellman, Narendra Pathak, Iain A. Drummond

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Organ development leads to the emergence of organ function, which in turn can impact developmental processes. Here we show that fluid flow-induced collective epithelial migration during kidney nephron morphogenesis induces cell stretch that in turn signals epithelial proliferation. Increased cell proliferation was dependent on PI3K signaling. Inhibiting epithelial proliferation by blocking PI3K or CDK4/Cyclin D1 activity arrested cell migration prematurely and caused a marked overstretching of the distal nephron tubule. Computational modeling of the involved cell processes predicted major morphological and kinetic outcomes observed experimentally under a variety of conditions. Overall, our findings suggest that kidney development is a recursive …

Empowering The World Through Dentistry, Charles W. Vittitow Jul 2012

Empowering The World Through Dentistry, Charles W. Vittitow

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Dentistry is a very specific trade that one develops after years of education and training. With this skill comes a great amount of power and opportunity to serve, and with great skill comes great responsibility. Many dentists have decided to answer the call of third world countries that lack proper health care and specifically dental care. They do this in a variety of ways from sending supplies, supporting a local clinic financially, or traveling to the country for a short-term trip where they provide dental care to as many patients as they are physically able to for 7 to 10 …

Role Of Nucleosome Remodeling Factor (Nurf) In Tumorigenesis Using A Breast Cancer Mouse Model, Aiman Alhazmi Jul 2012

Role Of Nucleosome Remodeling Factor (Nurf) In Tumorigenesis Using A Breast Cancer Mouse Model, Aiman Alhazmi

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the impact of epigenetic mechanisms on tumorigenesis is essential, as epigenetic alterations are associated with tumor initiation and progression. Because epigenetic changes are reversible, they are potential targets for cancer therapy. Nucleosome Remodeling Factor (NURF) is a chromatin-remodeling complex that regulates gene expression by changing nucleosome positioning along the DNA sequence. Previous studies have shown a role for NURF in embryonic development as well as regulating genes involved in tumor progression. In this work we investigated the impact of eliminating NURF function in tumorigenesis in vivo. BALB/c mice challenged with syngeneic 67NR breast cancer cell lines, injected into the …
