Photochemical Oxidation Studies Of Porphyrin Ruthenium Complexes, Eric Vanover
Photochemical Oxidation Studies Of Porphyrin Ruthenium Complexes, Eric Vanover
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In nature, transition metal containing enzymes display many biologically important, attractive and efficient catalytic oxidation reactions. Many transition metal catalysts have been designed to mimic the predominant oxidation catalysts in nature, namely, the cytochrome P450 enzymes. Ruthenium porphyrin complexes have been the center of this research and have successfully been utilized, as catalysts, in major oxidation reactions, such as the hydroxylation of alkanes. The present work focuses on photocatalytic studies of aerobic oxidation reactions with well characterized ruthenium porphyrin complexes.

Neural Basis Of The Potentiated Inhibition Of Repeated Haloperidol And Clozapine Treatment On The Phencyclidine-Induced Hyperlocomotion, Changjiu Zhao, Tao Sun, Ming Li
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Clinical observations suggest that antipsychotic effect starts early and increases progressively over time. This time course of antipsychotic effect can be captured in a rat phencyclidine (PCP)-induced hyperlocomotion model, as repeated antipsychotic treatment progressively increases its inhibition of the repeated PCP-induced hyperlocomotion. Although the neural basis of acute antipsychotic action has been studied extensively, the system that mediates the potentiated effect of repeated antipsychotic treatment has not been elucidated. In the present study, we investigated the neuroanatomical basis of the potentiated action of haloperidol (HAL) and clozapine (CLZ) treatment in the repeated PCP-induced hyperlocomotion. Once daily for five consecutive days, …

Individual Prey Choices Of Octopuses: Are They Generalist Or Specialist?, Jennifer A. Mather, Tatiana S. Leite, Allan T. Batista
Individual Prey Choices Of Octopuses: Are They Generalist Or Specialist?, Jennifer A. Mather, Tatiana S. Leite, Allan T. Batista
Sentience Collection
Prey choice is often evaluated at the species or population level. Here, we analyzed the diet of octopuses of different populations with the aim to assess the importance of individual feeding habits as a factor affecting prey choice. Two methods were used, an assessment of the extent to which an individual octopus made choices of species representative of those population (PSi and IS) and 25% cutoff values for number of choices and percentage intake of individual on their prey. In one population of Octopus cf vulgaris in Bermuda individuals were generalist by IS=0.77, but most chose many prey of the …

Physiology Collection
The aim of this study was to compare effects of inorganic sulfate versus chelated forms of supplemental Cu, Mn, and Zn on milk production, plasma and milk mineral concentrations, neutrophil activity, and antibody titer response to a model vaccination. Holstein cows (n = 25) were assigned in 2 cohorts based on calving date to a 12-wk randomized complete block design study. The first cohort consisted of 17 cows that had greater days in milk (DIM; mean of 77 DIM at the start of the trial) than the second cohort of 8 cows (32 DIM at the start of the trial). …

Analyzing Nurse-Physician Discursive Practices In Acute Patient Care, John Dinolfo
All Dissertations
This mixed methods study in inter-professional health communication assesses the pedagogical role of writing and visual communication in the education of non-traditional and traditional Nursing students as they interpret and apply the concepts of message framing and message reception in nurse-physician communication. To achieve that goal, this study analyzes the dynamics of terministic screens as message frames that can determine message reception in nurse-physician communication regarding the status of an acute care patient.
The study was conducted in two Nursing writing and communication classes during the Spring 2011 semester. Two study groups (combined across classes) included a mixed population of …

Biological Sciences
Vibrio fischeri cells are the sole colonists of a specialized light organ in the mantle cavity of the sepiolid squid Euprymna scolopes. The process begins when the bacteria aggregate in mucus secretions outside the light organ. The cells eventually leave the aggregate, enter the light organ, and encounter a rich supply of peptides. The need to dissociate from mucus and presumably utilize peptides led us to hypothesize that protease activity is integral to the colonization process. Protease activity associated with whole cells of Vibrio fischeri strain ES114 was identified as the product of a putative cell membrane-associated aminopeptidase (PepN). To …
How Do Host Sex And Reproductive State Affect Host Preference And Feeding Duration Of Ticks?, Nicholas B. Pollock, Larisa K. Vredevoe, Emily N. Taylor
How Do Host Sex And Reproductive State Affect Host Preference And Feeding Duration Of Ticks?, Nicholas B. Pollock, Larisa K. Vredevoe, Emily N. Taylor
Biological Sciences
Parasitism is one of the most notable forms of symbiosis in the biological world, with nearly all organisms hosting parasites. In many vertebrates, males have higher ectoparasite burdens than females, especially when testosterone concentrations are elevated. Furthermore, reproductive females may have higher ectoparasite burdens than non-reproductive females. It is possible that testosterone-stimulated behaviors in males and offspring investment by females incur energetic costs that inhibit immune function. If questing ticks can sense host sex or reproductive condition prior to attachment, they could potentially choose hosts with the poorest immune function, thereby leading to improved feeding success and decreased feeding duration. …
High School Horticulture Curriculum, Margaret Maratsos
High School Horticulture Curriculum, Margaret Maratsos
Horticulture and Crop Science
Horticulture is just one of the many topics covered in a high school agriculture curriculum, and yet, there are very few lesson plans or resources available to teachers for these classes specifically. The objectives of this project were to compile a set of lesson plans, lab plans, and tests that would emphasize interactive and investigative learning. The lesson plans were written in such a way that they reflected a certain set of standards, set down by the state of California, and were meant to serve as a bare outline of topics that would be discussed within a week’s worth of …

Large achievement gaps have been found in ACT scores between high schools throughout the same state and in comparisons between states. In Missouri, four public high schools have consistently scored four points higher than the Missouri average for years 2007-2011. States, such as Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa, have shown consistent above average scores as compared to states with similar participation numbers throughout the nation. Schmoker (2006) believed that due to the existing culture of schools and school leadership, learning from others’ successes is often discouraged; therefore, this study was conducted in an attempt to discover the best practices used in …
Part I. Studies Of Stereoselective C-H Amination, Part Ii. Synthetic Studies Of Edaxadiene, Part Iii. Studies Towards The Synthesis Of Alchivemycin A, Part Iv. The Formal Synthesis Of (-)-Englerin A By Rrcm And Etherification, Jungyong Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Part I. Various polysaccharides and glycosidic antibiotics including anthracycline and vancomycin have been widely used to treat cancer or infection. Amino sugars are often found in their structures and play an important role in biological activities. C-H amination is one of valuable methods to streamline the synthesis of C-N bond. Regio-, stereoselective C-H amination has been studied to produce useful amino sugars from glycals and alkynol carbamates. Part II. Edaxadiene was considered as a new diterpene that had biological activities to inhibit the infection process of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We describe a design to access a bicyclic backbone, which is the …
Identification Of Small Molecules That Bind To The Hemopexin Domain Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9, Zhu Li
Identification Of Small Molecules That Bind To The Hemopexin Domain Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9, Zhu Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role in cancer progression by degrading extracellular matrix components, promoting tumor cell migration, and thus enhancing tumor metastasis. Several generations of anticancer drug were designed to inhibit the proteolytic functions of MMPs, but these drugs failed in clinic trails due to lack of selectivity. This study focused on the hemopexin domain of MMP-9, a nonproteolytic domain, which is essential for MMP-9 regulated tumor cell migration. Compared with the catalytic domain of MMPs, fewer amino acids are conserved between the hemopexin domains of MMP family members. This difference provides the principle basis for identification of …

Radiosynthesis And Bioimaging Of Antibacterial Agents, Li Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The dose and duration of treatment of antibacterial agents is normally established using plasma pharmacokinetic (PK) data together with information on drug efficacy once treatment has been initiated. Although plasma drug concentration is an important guide for establishing treatment protocols, recent studies indicate that the distribution of antibiotics in tissues is a more critical determinant and predictive factor for their activity. This is because most drugs exert their bactericidal effects at the site of infection rather than in the plasma, and because drug equilibration between plasma and infection site cannot always be achieved Therefore the tissue distribution of front-line TB …

Analysis Of The Vibrational Structure In The Electronic Spectra Of Molecules: Phenylacetylene As A Prototype Molecule, Gary Vladimir Lopez
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Experimental studies of phenylacetylene (PA) in the gas phase previously revealed an unusual new set of photophysical properties following the S1←S0 excitation. The decay of the initially excited level showed the expected short (75ns) lifetime component assigned to the S1 state and a second very long lifetime (>100 microsec) component that were both created during the excitation laser pulse [Hofstein J. | Xu H. | Sears T. J. | Johnson P. M. | J. Phys. Chem. A 112 (2008)]. To investigate the identity and formation mechanism of the long-lived species, a good understanding of the vibrational structure in the …
Phospho-Sulindac Inhibits Pancreatic Cancer Growth: The Role Of Nfatc1, Onika T. Murray
Phospho-Sulindac Inhibits Pancreatic Cancer Growth: The Role Of Nfatc1, Onika T. Murray
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
While significant progress has been made in the battle against pancreatic cancer, it ranks 4th in cancer-related deaths in the U.S. Lending to the lethality of the disease is its ability to grow virtually undetected. Once pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, chances are that it has advanced beyond the point of surgical resection, as well as having become quite resistant to chemotherapy. While some chemotherapeutic agents have been able to improve patients' short-term quality of life, the impact on long-term survival has been minimal. The Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells (NFAT) family is a calcineurin-responsive group of transcription factors initially identified …
Lead Optimization And Slow-Onset Inhibition Of The Enoyl-Acp Reductase (Inha) From Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Pan Pan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The enoyl-ACP reductase (InhA) catalyzes the last step of fatty acid biosynthesis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and is a validated target for antitubercular drugs. Our group previously reported diaryl ether InhA inhibitors that are highly active against M. tuberculosis (MIC = 3.15 ??g/mL). Further studies showed that introducing an ortho methyl group on the inhibitor B-ring resulted in a 430-fold increase in binding affinity. To understand the role of this methyl group, and design more potent inhibitors, analogs with various ortho groups on the B-ring were synthesized and evaluated. Enzyme inhibition was found to be highly sensitive to the size of …
Inhibitors Of 3&Beta-Hydroxysteroid? Dehydrogenase And Metabolic? And Enzymatic Characterization Of The Cholesterol? ? Metabolizing Intracellular Growth? Operon? Of? Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Suzanne T. Thomas
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
New drugs with novel mechanisms of action are required to meet the severe threat to human health posed by the emergence of multidrug and extensively drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). The cholesterol metabolism pathway in M. tuberculosis is a potential source of energy as well as secondary metabolite production that is important for survival of M. tuberculosis in the host macrophage. Oxidation and isomerization of 3Β-hydroxysterols to 4-en-3-ones by M. tuberculosis 3Β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3Β-HSD) is required for sterol metabolism, and inhibitors of 3Β-HSD are important for targeting the cholesterol metabolic pathway. In this work, we evaluated a …

Factors Controlling And Promoting Blooms Of Microalgae (Thalassiosira Spp.) And Macroalgae (Ulva Sp.) In A Hypereutrophic, Urban Estuary, Jamaica Bay, Ny, Usa, Ryan Brown Wallace
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Hypereutrophic estuaries are increasingly common features along global coastlines and are typically prone to micro- and macroalgal blooms, yet studies concurrently assessing the factors controlling these distinct algal populations in a single system have been rare. Jamaica Bay is an urban estuary that is hypereutrophic and experiences algal blooms that have been poorly characterized. During 2010 - 2012, the temporal and spatial dynamics of macro- and microalgal communities in Jamaica Bay were investigated in parallel with the factors that control the growth of these algal populations. Phytoplankton communities within the poorly flushed regions of Jamaica Bay (i.e. North Channel and …

Dock7 Interacts With Tacc3 To Regulate Interkinetic Nuclear Migration And Genesis Of Neurons From Cortical Neuronal Progenitors, Yuting Rosa Yang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The six-layered mammalian neocortex derives from a pseudostratified neuroepithelium by a series of cell divisions of neuronal progenitors, neuroepithelial and radial glial cells. Neurogenesis, a major event in the developing neocortex, relies on the ability of radial glial cells (RGCs) to switch from proliferative self-expanding to differentiative neurongenerating/progenitor self-renewing divisions. However, the molecular mechanisms that control this switch in a correct temporal manner are not well understood. In this thesis, I demonstrated that the DOCK180 family member DOCK7, an activator of Rac GTPases, plays an important role in the regulation of RGC proliferation versus differentiation. Silencing of DOCK7 in RGCs …
Invasion Of Centaurea Nigrescens, Tyrol Knapweed, In North America, Rebecca Ann Grella
Invasion Of Centaurea Nigrescens, Tyrol Knapweed, In North America, Rebecca Ann Grella
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Centaurea nigrescens is a native plant in Europe that was introduced to North America in the 1800s. This dissertation focuses on the introduction and spread of C. nigrescens across North America using herbaria records and genetic differences between native and non-native populations to construct likely invasion routes. Herbarium records and the results of a Minimum Cost Arborescence model coupled with chloroplast DNA analysis support the hypothesis that there was an initial introduction of C. nigrescens near Worcester, Massachusetts in 1830. Significant haplotype differences between the populations from the northeastern and the northwestern US support the hypothesis that there was a …

The Learning Of The Grammatical Gender In A Second Language, Heidy A. De Jesus
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This study investigates why and where within a sentence, non-L1 Spanish students still make mistakes when classifying the grammatical gender after being exposed to the grammar explanations. Thirty-six L1 and non- L1 English speakers from two Spanish beginner college level class were asked to complete five different experiments, in which students had to match the gender of the noun with the correspondent article and make the gender of the nouns agree by writing or selecting the correct descriptive adjective. Results showed that (1) at a very early stage, students' Cultural Language Perception could interfere with the learning of the grammatical …

Speciation, Ecological Divergence, And Phylogeny In Plethodontid Salamanders, Margaret Caitlin Fisher-Reid
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Speciation has been a subject of great interest and study since the founding of evolutionary biology by Darwin in 1859. In my thesis, I examine speciation from multiple perspectives in plethodontid salamanders. Molecular phylogenies based on combined mitochondrial and nuclear DNA are commonly used to infer patterns of speciation. Yet, we know little about how mitochondrial and nuclear DNA interact to produce a combined-data tree. How much do trees from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA differ? How are topological conflicts between these data types typically resolved in the combined-data tree? I compare mitochondrial, nuclear, and combined-data trees for 14 vertebrate clades …

Tumors As Wounds That Never Heal:Signaling Modalities Governing Lung Epithelial Repair And Tumor Heterogeneity, Matthew Joseph Camiolo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The attrition of cells within organs necessitates replenishment from tissue resident progenitor populations. Study of the murine lung has suggested a number of niches present at different levels of the airways along the proximal-distal axis responsible for steady state epithelial turnover as well as response to catastrophic injury. Within the distal most bronchiole airspaces, injury resistant cells termed bronchioalveolar stem cells (BASCs) have been reported to reside at the bronchioalveolar duct junction (BADJ). Since the initial reporting of BASCs, controversy over their true nature has confounded progress towards useful application of insights from their biology towards new therapeutic modalities. We …

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations
Food availability and acquisition are critical components of a stopover site's suitability, but we know relatively little about how changes in food availability affect the stopover ecology of migrating landbirds. We examined fruit and arthropod availability in three habitats, studied foraging behavior and diet, and investigated use versus availability for passerines migrating through southwestern Idaho in autumn. Hemiptera dominated foliage-dwelling arthropod communities in all three habitats, whereas Hymenoptera were most numerous among ground-dwelling arthropods. Mountain shrubland had relatively high biomass of both ground-dwelling and foliage-dwelling arthropods, whereas conifer forest had high biomass of foliage-dwelling arthropods only and shrub steppe had …

Background and aims: We review evidence for hybridization of Phragmites australis in North America and the implications for the persistence of native P. australis ssp. americanus populations in North America. We also highlight the need for an updated classification system, which takes P. australis intraspecific variation and hybridization into account.
Methodology: We reviewed available published, in press, and in preparation literature to assess the likelihood of hybridization and interbreeding in genotypes of Phragmites australis present in North America.
Principal results: Experimental results demonstrate that hybridization among introduced and native haplotypes is possible within the genus Phragmites …
