Interaction Effects Of Multiple Levels Of Disadvantage And Kinship Foster Care In African American Youth, Anne Rufa Aug 2012

Interaction Effects Of Multiple Levels Of Disadvantage And Kinship Foster Care In African American Youth, Anne Rufa

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Child welfare services' current practice is to attempt to identify kinship foster settings first when removing a child from their home, a practice used disproportionately for African American youth. In this study, potential contextual factors of foster homes (i.e., community environment, caregiver's age, caregiver's physical health) were identified as possible moderators of the relationship between the type of out-of-home placement (i.e., kinship, other out-of-home placement) used and changes in internalizing and externalizing scores in African American youth. Results confirm a significant increase in internalizing and externalizing scores when youth are placed in kinship foster homes with caregivers who are older …

The Role Of Attributions In Stereotype Threat Effects: Female Achievements In Stem Domains, Caitlyn Yantis Aug 2012

The Role Of Attributions In Stereotype Threat Effects: Female Achievements In Stem Domains, Caitlyn Yantis

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Despite some advances, the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields persists. Stereotype threat has been cited as a debilitating phenomenon that may contribute to the underrepresentation of women in STEM domains (e.g., Ambady, Shih, Kim, & Pittinsky,2001). Using the attributional model of stereotypes (Reyna, 2000), the current work explores the role of attributions in a stereotype threat context. Seventy-two female undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of four attribution conditions to explain female detriments in logical reasoning: effort, ability, society, or no stereotype. All participants then completed a test of logical reasoning. Although previous research has …

Effects Of Timeframe On The Recall Reliability Of Me/Cfs Symptoms, Meredyth Evans Aug 2012

Effects Of Timeframe On The Recall Reliability Of Me/Cfs Symptoms, Meredyth Evans

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This study served as an investigation of the effects of symptom stability, timeframe length, and momentary symptom severity on the recall reliability of symptoms experienced by individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). ME/CFS symptoms were assessed at four recall timeframes (right now, the past week, the past month, and the past six months) and at two assessment points. Analyses revealed that test-retest reliability was significantly stronger for recall of post-exertlonal malaise (PEM), headaches, and memory problems, when these symptoms were perceived to be stable over time rather than variable. It was also revealed that the optimal timeframe for variable …

Assembly Of The Didymium Iridis Mitochondrial Genome By Genome Walking, Dale Kopp Aug 2012

Assembly Of The Didymium Iridis Mitochondrial Genome By Genome Walking, Dale Kopp

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Organelle inheritance and RNA editing has been studied in Didymium iridis even though the genome has not been completely sequenced. Four segments, comprising 66 kb, have been sequenced in the past. Several approaches have been taken to complete the sequence including restriction mapping and southern hybridization, as well as screening clone banks by PCR with the sequence of contig ends. In this study, genome walking was used to uncover sequences connecting the four segments. Using genome walking, approximately 4,113 bp of new sequence was identified. With the new sequence and the characterization of two previously sequenced D. iridis mt regions …

Corrosion Behavior And Residual Stress Of Microarc Oxidation Coated Az31 Magnesium Alloy For Biomedical Applications, Yanhong Gu Aug 2012

Corrosion Behavior And Residual Stress Of Microarc Oxidation Coated Az31 Magnesium Alloy For Biomedical Applications, Yanhong Gu

Engineering

Mg alloys are potentially new biomaterials for bone repair or replacement. Appropriate coating is, however, needed to make the Mg alloy more resistant to corrosion. In this research, protective microarc oxidation (MAO) coatings were produced on AZ31 Mg alloys in sodium phosphate electrolyte. The coatings were produced under varying pulse frequency, applied voltage, oxidation time and electrolyte concentrations. This research analyzed the effects of the above four MAO process control parameters on the residual stresses and the corrosion behavior. Optimization of the MAO control parameters would allow production of AZ31 Mg alloy with high corrosion resistance. It is well accepted …

Whose Hands Ply The Strands? Survey Of Eastern Michigan University Psychology Faculty Regarding Faculty And Librarian Roles In Nurturing Psychology Information Literacy, Keith Stanger Aug 2012

Whose Hands Ply The Strands? Survey Of Eastern Michigan University Psychology Faculty Regarding Faculty And Librarian Roles In Nurturing Psychology Information Literacy, Keith Stanger

Faculty Scholarship - University Library

The Association of College and Research Libraries developed information literacy standards and associated performance indicators for undergraduate psychology students. A survey of tenure-track faculty members and full-time lecturers in the Psychology Department at Eastern Michigan University was conducted to discover how those professors viewed the importance of these indicators, and how those professors perceived their role, as well as the role of librarians, in supporting instruction that develops those skills. The psychology faculty acknowledged the curricular value of the information literacy performance indicators and perceived librarians as having a supportive role relative to their own more primary role in developing …

Growth Of Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) As An Indicator Of Density-Dependence In The Chena River, Megan T. Perry Aug 2012

Growth Of Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) As An Indicator Of Density-Dependence In The Chena River, Megan T. Perry

Biological Sciences

In management of Pacific salmon, it is often assumed that density-dependent factors, mediated by the physical environment during freshwater residency, regulate population size prior to smolting and outmigration. However, in years following low escapement, temperature may be setting the upper limit on growth of juvenile chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha during the summer rearing period. Given the importance of juvenile salmon survival for the eventual adult population size, we require a greater understanding of how density-dependent and independent factors affect juvenile demography through time. In this study we tested the hypotheses that (1) juvenile chinook salmon in the Chena River are …

Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch Aug 2012

Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch

Biological Sciences

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Alaska supports a large population of moose that lives in and around the urban and industrial development of Anchorage. This study evaluates the body condition of adult female moose on JBER and calculates the relative nutritional value of habitat for planning development and for mitigating the effects of development on this population. Body condition of moose on JBER was similar to that of other populations of moose in Alaska. Our nutritional model predicted that shrublands could support 11-81 times more moose than any other habitat on JBER. Activity patterns of JBER moose were similar to those …

Controls On Ecosystem Respiration Of Carbon Dioxide Across A Boreal Wetland Gradient In Interior Alaska, Nicole A. Mcconnell Aug 2012

Controls On Ecosystem Respiration Of Carbon Dioxide Across A Boreal Wetland Gradient In Interior Alaska, Nicole A. Mcconnell

Biological Sciences

Permafrost and organic soil layers are common to most wetlands in interior Alaska, where wetlands have functioned as important long-term soil carbon sinks. Boreal wetlands are diverse in both vegetation and nutrient cycling, ranging from nutrient-poor bogs to nutrient- and vascular-rich fens. The goals of my study were to quantify growing season ecosystem respiration (ER) along a gradient of vegetation and permafrost in a boreal wetland complex, and to evaluate the main abiotic and biotic variables that regulate CO₂ release from boreal soils. Highest ER and root respiration were observed at a sedge/forb community and lowest ER and root respiration …

Improving The Quantitative Assessment Of Intraretinal Features By Determining Both Structural And Optical Properties Of The Retinal Tissue With Optical Coherence Tomography, Wei Gao Aug 2012

Improving The Quantitative Assessment Of Intraretinal Features By Determining Both Structural And Optical Properties Of The Retinal Tissue With Optical Coherence Tomography, Wei Gao

Open Access Dissertations

The goal of this project is to obtain quantitative assessments of intraretinal features by determining the structural and optical properties of retinal tissue with optical coherence tomography. To accomplish this goal, structural and optical properties, in addition to thickness measurements, were extracted from OCT-based images and were used for the discrimination of DM eyes with and without DR from healthy eyes. First, structural parameters including the thickness, fractal dimension, energy, entropy, correlation and contrast were evaluated for each intraretinal layer using various image processing techniques such as speckle noise removal, retinal segmentation and blood vessel shadow removal. In addition, optical …

Locust Dynamics: Behavioral Phase Change And Swarming, Chad M. Topaz, Maria R. D'Orsogna, Leah Edelstein-Keshet, Andrew J. Bernoff Aug 2012

Locust Dynamics: Behavioral Phase Change And Swarming, Chad M. Topaz, Maria R. D'Orsogna, Leah Edelstein-Keshet, Andrew J. Bernoff

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Locusts exhibit two interconvertible behavioral phases, solitarious and gregarious. While solitarious individuals are repelled from other locusts, gregarious insects are attracted to conspecifics and can form large aggregations such as marching hopper bands. Numerous biological experiments at the individual level have shown how crowding biases conversion towards the gregarious form. To understand the formation of marching locust hopper bands, we study phase change at the collective level, and in a quantitative framework. Specifically, we construct a partial integrodifferential equation model incorporating the interplay between phase change and spatial movement at the individual level in order to predict the dynamics of …

Movement, Habitat Use And Detection Probability Of Bridle Shiner Estimated By Patch Occupancy Modeling In A Connecticut Watershed, Timothy Jensen Aug 2012

Movement, Habitat Use And Detection Probability Of Bridle Shiner Estimated By Patch Occupancy Modeling In A Connecticut Watershed, Timothy Jensen

Master's Theses

The bridle shiner (Notropis bifrenatus) is believed to have once been an important prey item throughout its native range; however, recent reports suggest populations have declined significantly and the species is now widely considered as imperiled. Habitats that are associated with this species are typically difficult to sample using traditional methods, making it unclear how much of the observed range reduction could be actual or perceived. My objectives were to estimate detection probability of bridle shiner, evaluate the importance of habitat on their distribution, and determine patterns of movement among habitat patches. I employed a repeated surveys design …

Design And Simulation Of A Mechanical Hand, Yateen P. Shembade Aug 2012

Design And Simulation Of A Mechanical Hand, Yateen P. Shembade

Theses

A variety of mechanical hand designs have been developed in the past few decades. The majority of the designs were made with the sole purpose of imitating the human hand and its capabilities; however, none of these designs have been equipped with all the motions and sensory capabilities of the human hand. The primary goal of this thesis project was to design a robotic hand with the required amount of degrees-of-freedom and necessary constraints to achieve all the motions of the human hand. Demonstration of the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet, using a virtual design and controls platform, was used …

Formation And Characterization Of Non-Growth States In Clostridium Thermocellum: Spores And L-Forms, Elizabeth B. Mearls, Javier A. Izquierdo, Lee R. Lynd Aug 2012

Formation And Characterization Of Non-Growth States In Clostridium Thermocellum: Spores And L-Forms, Elizabeth B. Mearls, Javier A. Izquierdo, Lee R. Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

Clostridium thermocellum is an anaerobic thermophilic bacterium that exhibits high levels of cellulose solublization and produces ethanol as an end product of its metabolism. Using cellulosic biomass as a feedstock for fuel production is an attractive prospect, however, growth arrest can negatively impact ethanol production by fermentative microorganisms such as C. thermocellum. Understanding conditions that lead to non-growth states in C. thermocellum can positively influence process design and culturing conditions in order to optimize ethanol production in an industrial setting.

Open Source Research In Sustainability, Joshua M. Pearce Aug 2012

Open Source Research In Sustainability, Joshua M. Pearce

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications

Most academics, who as researchers and teachers dedicate their lives to information sharing, would likely agree with much of the hacker ethic, which is a belief that information-sharing is a powerful positive good and there is an ethical duty to share expertise by writing free and open-source code and facilitating access to information wherever possible. However, despite a well-established gift culture similar to that of the open source software movement in academic publishing and the tenure process many academics fail to openly provide the “source” (e.g. data sets, literature reviews, detailed experimental methodologies, designs, and open access to results) of …

What Can Computed Tomography And Magnetic Resonance Imaging Tell Us About Ventilation?, Brett A Simon, David W Kaczka, Alexander A Bankier, Grace Parraga

Medical Biophysics Publications

This review provides a summary of pulmonary functional imaging approaches for determining pulmonary ventilation, with a specific focus on multi-detector x-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We provide the important functional definitions of pulmonary ventilation typically used in medicine and physiology and discuss the fact that some of the imaging literature describes gas distribution abnormalities in pulmonary disease that may or may not be related to the physiological definition or clinical interpretation of ventilation. We also review the current state-of-the-field in terms of the key physiological questions yet unanswered related to ventilation and gas distribution in lung disease. …
