Oxytetracycline-Resistant Bacteria In Coastal Waters In Malaysia, G.Y. Kian, W.B. Chui, W.L. Choon

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Oxytetracycline (OTC) is one of the most widely used antibiotics in aquaculture worldwide because of its broad spectrum of activity. The prevalence of OTCresistant environmental bacteria poses a serious risk in human and veterinary medicine. In this study, we isolated 140 and 142 OTC-resistant bacteria (~60Ilg/ml) from Port Dickson (PO) and Port Klang (PK), respectively. Among these OTC-resistant bacteria, 79 isolates (25 from PO and 54 from PK) were highly resistant to OTC (~2401lg!ml). These 79 isolates were then separated into different OTUs by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method using three restriction enzymes (Rsal, Cfot, DdeI). The different OTUs …

Potential Production And Loss Rates Of Picocyanobacteria In Tropical Coastal Waters, L.H. Pei, W.L. Choon

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this study, monthly samplings were conducted at Port Klang and Port Dickson over a two-year period to measure potential production rate and loss rates of picocyanobacteria using the Landry Hassett dilution technique. Twelve sets of two-factorial experiment were also carried out to further investigate the effect of light and nutrient on picocyanobacteria production rate. Significantly lower abundance was measured at Port Klang (2.80 ± .172 x 104 cell rnl") compared to Port Dickson (13.2 ± 4.68 x 104 cell ml') (Student's z-test: I = 9.80, df= 40, P < 0.001). Potential production and loss rates observed at Port Klang (3.77 - 70.4 and 1.88 - 75.60 x 102 cell ml' hOi)were also much lower than Port Dickson (2.32 - 15.90 and 1.06 - 18.4 x 103cell ml" hOi)(Student's 1-test: 1= 9.63, df= 37, P < 0.001; 1= 7.49, df= 43, P < 0.001). In the twofactorial experiment, only nutrient (F = 7.00, P < 0.05) showed a significant effect on production rate. However, the interaction between light and nutrient also have a significant effect on production rate (F = 5.80, P > 0.05). These results suggest that in tropical coastal waters, nutrient played …

The Closer Bridge Towards Islamic Studies In Higher Education In Malaysia And Indonesia, Abd Rachman Assegaf, Abd Razak Zakaria, Abdul Muhsein Sulaiman

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The transformations of Islamic higher education in Indonesia have occurred since the establishment of STI to PTAIN, then IAIN and UIN. It has tremendous impact on the implementation of models of Islamic studies. At early stage of development, Islamic higher education in this country tends to follow a norma-tive-idealistic approach of Islamic studies due to the huge influences of many Middle Eastern graduates. However, changes of Islamic studies approach come to exist when the Western graduates bring non- scriptualistic methodologies and multidisciplinary approach in Islamic studies. If compared to Malaysia, the two poles of Eastern or Western and Islamic or …

Abandoning Women To Their Rights: What Happens When Feminist Jurisprudence Ignores Birthing Rights, Rebecca A. Spence Oct 2012

Abandoning Women To Their Rights: What Happens When Feminist Jurisprudence Ignores Birthing Rights, Rebecca A. Spence

Student Articles and Papers

The goals of the Article are twofold. First, this Article will demonstrate that while birthing rights issues have been familiar areas of concern for feminist scholarship on women's rights to privacy and equality, neglecting to integrate this work into the law school classroom fails to promote effective legal advocacy for pregnant women. The violation of women's rights during childbirth is a more common problem than reported legal opinions indicate, and few lawyers are prepared to protect clients prospectively or to vindicate women's rights post-childbirth.

Building Future Transatlantic Interoperability Around A Robust Nato Response Force, Charles Barry Oct 2012

Building Future Transatlantic Interoperability Around A Robust Nato Response Force, Charles Barry

Transatlantic Currents

Interoperability is as much or more about human teamwork than it is about compatible machines and processes. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) operational deployments, without respite since 1992,1 have spawned a nascent culture of multinational planning and operational teamwork among a host of militaries. This coalition culture is emerging in the same way as the joint operations culture has grown across the U.S. military since the watershed Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986.

Method For Arsenic Detection In Mine Samples From The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, Vinay Babu Yalamanchili Oct 2012

Method For Arsenic Detection In Mine Samples From The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, Vinay Babu Yalamanchili

All Capstone Projects

Arsenic is the 20th abundant element in the earth crust. High concentrations of Arsenic is seen in mine operating countries which can affect public health and biological environment. This may reach to drinking water through ground or surface run-off water. Long term exposure to arsenic causes cancer of bladder, skin, and lungs. So detecting the amount of arsenic in soil and drinking has been an analytical challenge. Arsenic is found in variety of chemical forms in organic and inorganic compounds which results in chemical and physical interferences in the analysis. Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (GFAAS) was used to measure …

Evaluation And In Vitro Studies Of Folate Peg Biotin And Other Peg Agents, Syed Zahid Hussain Oct 2012

Evaluation And In Vitro Studies Of Folate Peg Biotin And Other Peg Agents, Syed Zahid Hussain

All Capstone Projects

Folate is a member of vitamin B family and plays an essential role in cell survival by participating in the biosynthesis of nucleic and amino acids. Receptors folic acid are frequently over expressed on epithelial cancer cells. These receptors are believed to serve as a receptor-mediated transport system of folic acid into cancer cells and cells associated with inflammation. Interesting, most normal cells in the body have lower frequency of these receptors. Based on these attributes, folate based drug delivery, imaging systems, and diagnostic systems are in several stages of development worldwide.

In this current project, we have characterized the …

Literature Search On Using Dendrimer Nanoparticles As Drug Delivery Vehicles, Sivateja Kasaraneni Oct 2012

Literature Search On Using Dendrimer Nanoparticles As Drug Delivery Vehicles, Sivateja Kasaraneni

All Capstone Projects

The architectural design of dendrimers, multivalency, well-defined molecular weight and higher degree of branching differentiates them as unique and excellent nanocarriers in therapeutic applications such as drug delivery, gene transfection, tumor therapy, imaging and diagnostics. Nanoparticle drug-delivery systems are well known to increase the stability and selectivity of therapeutic agents. However immunogenicity, reticuloendothelial system uptake, drug leakage, cytotoxicity, hemolytic toxicity, poor aqueous solubility restrict the use of these drug delivery systems. These defects are overcame by surface engineering of the dendrimer molecule.

Drug molecule can be efficiently conjugated or encapsulated into the interior of the dendrimer or physically adsorbed onto …

Purification And Analysis Of Folate-Dye Conjugate, Sravya Mothe Oct 2012

Purification And Analysis Of Folate-Dye Conjugate, Sravya Mothe

All Capstone Projects

Folate receptor has achieved great importance for use in targeted drug delivery and in vitro and in vivo diagnostic assays. Folate receptor (FR) is over expressed on several cancer cell types and activated macrophages, but exists in relatively low abundance on the surface of non-cancerous tissue and non-inflammatory cells. This unique attribute is the hallmark of folate – targeted methodologies allowing the diagnostic agent and/or drug to be ferried to the specific disease sites while preventing “off target” effects in normal tissues. Although several folate-based dyes have been reported, simple and detailed synthetic and purification methods for these conjugates have …

Fabrication Of Ph- Or Temperature-Responsive Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes Via A Graft From Photopolymerization, Pu Zhang, David B. Henthorn Oct 2012

Fabrication Of Ph- Or Temperature-Responsive Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes Via A Graft From Photopolymerization, Pu Zhang, David B. Henthorn

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An ultraviolet light initiated "graft from" polymerization method to fabricate polymer-functionalized single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with pendant pH- and temperature-responsive polymer chains is utilized. the attached polymer chains, formed from methacrylic acid and poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate monomers, are well established for its pH-responsive swelling/deswelling behavior. This special property was utilized here to control the aqueous dispersibility of the carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), a temperature-responsive polymer, was utilized in the fabrication of SWNTs whose dispersibility was dependent on solution temperature. the morphology of the polymer-functionalized carbon nanotubes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after …

Random Fields At A Nonequilibrium Phase Transition, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta Oct 2012

Random Fields At A Nonequilibrium Phase Transition, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study nonequilibrium phase transitions in the presence of disorder that locally breaks the symmetry between two equivalent macroscopic states. In low-dimensional equilibrium systems, such random-field disorder is known to have dramatic effects: it prevents spontaneous symmetry breaking and completely destroys the phase transition. In contrast, we show that the phase transition of the one-dimensional generalized contact process persists in the presence of random-field disorder. The ultraslow dynamics in the symmetry-broken phase is described by a Sinai walk of the domain walls between two different absorbing states. We discuss the generality and limitations of our theory, and we illustrate our …

ABSTRACT

Effects of Experimentally Increased Testosterone on Movement and the

Effects of Sex and Age on Relative Cortical Volumes in the Northern Pacific

Rattlesnake (Crotalus o. oreganus)

Julius A. Frazier

Hormones have been shown to play a crucial role in vertebrate reproductive behaviors. Androgens such as testosterone (T) stimulate male sexual behaviors such as mate-searching. Increases in movement and sex differences in navigational demands associated with increased movement are positively related to the volumes of cortical brain regions associated with navigational ability. In mammals and birds, the development and morphology of the hippocampal region, a structure within the …

Long-Term Survival Of Anoxia Despite Rapid Atp Decline In Embryos Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Jason E. Podrabsky, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand Oct 2012

Long-Term Survival Of Anoxia Despite Rapid Atp Decline In Embryos Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Jason E. Podrabsky, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Embryos of the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus can survive for months in the complete absence of oxygen. Survival of anoxia is associated with entry into a state of metabolic dormancy known as diapause. However, extreme tolerance of anoxia is retained for several days of post-diapause development. Rates of heat dissipation in diapause II and 4 days post-diapause II embryos were measured under aerobic conditions and during the transition into anoxia. Phosphorylated adenylate compounds were quantified in embryos during entry into anoxia and after 12hr of aerobic recovery. Rates of heat dissipation were not affected by exposure to anoxia in diapause …
