Who Else Would Plant The Trees? A Status Update On The Pemba Flying Fox, Hannah “Hawa” Grose, Catherine Grace “Rahma” Clemmens Oct 2012

Who Else Would Plant The Trees? A Status Update On The Pemba Flying Fox, Hannah “Hawa” Grose, Catherine Grace “Rahma” Clemmens

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study assesses the current population of Pemba Flying Fox, Pteropusvoeltzkowi, at four key locations on Pemba Island off the coast of Tanzania previously noted as highly populated roost sites: Ngezi National Forest, Wete, Kidike, and MsituwaMbiji. We evaluate local knowledge, perceptions, and practices of communities surrounding the Pemba Flying Fox. This study also documents roosting and migratory patterns of the bats. We hypothesize a growth in bat population, an overall positive community perception of the bats, and a greater amount of conflict between fruit farmers and Pteropusvoeltzkowi. Results showed a decrease in estimated population. Additionally, reverse correlation was found …

Better Together: Expanding Rural Partnerships To Support Families, Harriet Shaklee, Jeri Bigbee, Misty Wall

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Chronic shortages of health, social service, and mental health professionals in rural areas necessitate creative partnerships in support of families. Cooperative extension professionals in Family and Consumer Sciences and community health nurses are introduced as trusted professionals in rural communities who can bring critical skills to human services teams. Multidisciplinary prevention programs offer particularly good contexts for county extension educators and community health nurses to work in collaboration with social workers. The case of grandparents raising grandchildren illustrates the critical roles that can be filled by professionals in these two fields to extend the reach of family support programs.

Infliximab Dose Rounding Pratices In Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Kelly C. Sandberg, Benjamin H. Shpeen, Sally J. Eder, Muhammad Dhanani, Sarah J. Clark, Gary L. Freed, Jeremy Adler

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Infliximab (IFX) is commonly used to treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IFX is supplied in 100mg vials and remains expensive. Dosing usually starts at 5mg/kg, and is commonly rounded up or down. The scope of dosing practices is unknown. Under-dosing may place patients at risk for exacerbation of IBD. Over-treatment potentially carries increased risk of infectious and malignant complications. We aimed to characterize IFX dosing practices among pediatric IBD practitioners participating in the ImproveCareNow Network.

The Association Of Elevated 2′,5′-Oligoadenylate-Dependent Rnase L With Lung Cancer Correlated With Deficient Enzymatic Activity And Decreased Capacity Of Rnase L Dimerization, Huijing Yin, Aimin Zhou, Yalei Dai Oct 2012

The Association Of Elevated 2′,5′-Oligoadenylate-Dependent Rnase L With Lung Cancer Correlated With Deficient Enzymatic Activity And Decreased Capacity Of Rnase L Dimerization, Huijing Yin, Aimin Zhou, Yalei Dai

Chemistry Faculty Publications

RNase L mediates critical cellular functions including antiviral, proapoptotic, antiproliferative and tumor suppressive activities. In this study, the expression and function of RNase L in lung cancer cells were examined. Interestingly we have found that the expression of RNase L in lung cancer cells was 3- and 9-fold higher in its mRNA and protein levels, but a significant decrease of its enzymatic activity when compared to that in corresponding normal lung cells. Further investigation revealed that 2-5A-induced dimerization of the RNase L protein, a necessary prerequisite for activation of RNase L, was inhibited, as a result of that RLI, a …

Biofuel Production From Tropical Marine Algae, M.P. Siew Oct 2012

Biofuel Production From Tropical Marine Algae, M.P. Siew

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Marine algae comprising both microalgae and the seaweeds, serve as important sources of a wide variety of useful products which find applications in nutrition, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, waste bioremediation and recently as feedstock for renewable energy. Biofuel in the form of biodiesel, bioa1cohol, biomethane, hydrogen and hydrocarbons are obtainable from algae. The advantages of algae as feedstock for biodiesel over other oil crops such as oil palm, rapeseed, soybean and jatropha, are well documented and based mainly on the high biomass productivities, non-competition with use as food, tolerance to habitats not suitable to other crops and the lower environmental …

Clonal Integration Helps Larger Seagrass Species Survive Sediment Burial In A Tropical Multispecies Ecosystem, J.L.S. Ooi, G.A. Kendrick, K. Van Niel Oct 2012

Clonal Integration Helps Larger Seagrass Species Survive Sediment Burial In A Tropical Multispecies Ecosystem, J.L.S. Ooi, G.A. Kendrick, K. Van Niel

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Seagrasses are rhizomatous clonal plants that grow submerged in coastal waters where burial under sediment - induced by bioturbation and tropical storms - is common. The effect of burial may be moderated by species-specific differences in clonal integration (resource translocation) but this has never been tested for seagrasses, in particular tropical seagrasses in multispecies meadows. In this study, we seek the thresholds of response of 4 seagrasses of varying sizes to burial, and we ask whether clonal integration has an effect on moderating these responses. Our study site is a 4 m-deep meadow in Pulau Tinggi, Malaysia. Plants in mixed …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The rise of CO2 levels in oceanic surface waters may have potential effect on marine bacteria although experimental results related to the effects of CO2 on marine microbes are rather inconsistent and at times conflicting. In the present study, we investigated the effect of elevated CO2 in seawater on bacterial production (BP), bacterial respiration (BR) and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) at two different locations which are Port Klang and Port Dickson. A total of six sets of experiment were conducted for each location with different concentrations of CO2 ranging from 2.95 to 99.35 urnol kg·l. Estimation of bacterial production and …

Environmental Factors Influencing Distribution Of Archaea In Tropical Coastal Waters, Y.S. Suet, W.L. Choon

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

We explore the archaea diversity in four locations along the Straits of Malacca, which is a semi-enclosed narrow tropical sea that connects the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea. Samples from these different environments were collected and four 16S rONA clone libraries were constructed with archaea specific primers (Arc21 F and Arc958R). In total, 1074 randomly selected clones were screened by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis using three different restriction enzymes (Rsal, Cfol, and DdeI). Archaeal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were defined as sequences which are 297% similar. Diversity index were determined for each clone library which has …

Microbial Food Web In Coastal Waters Of Malaysia, W.L. Choon Oct 2012

Microbial Food Web In Coastal Waters Of Malaysia, W.L. Choon

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Rising atmospheric CO2 has increased research on the carbon fluxes in oceans because the ocean is an important CO2 sink. The major flows of carbon in most aquatic systems are primary production and community respiration, especially bacterial respiration. These processes form the main components of the marine microbial food web. Our lab has been investigating the microbial food web in the coastal waters of Malaysia, and this paper summarizes some of the results already published. We have sampled in Port Klang, Port Dickson and Kuantan in areas that represent different trophic conditions. Across the different stations, we found significant coupling …
