Cartilage On The Move: Cartilage Lineage Tracing During Tadpole Metamorphosis, Ryan R. Kerney, Alison L. Brittain, Brian K. Hall, Daniel R. Buchholz

Biology Faculty Publications

The reorganization of cranial cartilages during tadpole metamorphosis is a set of complex processes. The fates of larval cartilage-forming cells (chondrocytes) and sources of adult chondrocytes are largely unknown. Individual larval cranial cartilages may either degenerate or remodel, while many adult cartilages appear to form de novo during metamorphosis. Determining the extent to which adult chondrocytes/cartilages are derived from larval chondrocytes during metamorphosis requires new techniques in chondrocyte lineage tracing. We have developed two transgenic systems to label cartilage cells throughout the body with fluorescent proteins. One system strongly labels early tadpole cartilages only. The other system inducibly labels forming …

The National Academy Of Sciences Workshop On Assessments In Science Courses, Leilani Arthurs

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which have undergone the first stage of public review and are currently under development, address not only content knowledge but also scientific skills. As such, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on Developing Assessments of Science Proficiency in K‐12 envisions the NGSS motivating change in the way that science is taught in the United States. A critical part of science instruction as it is envisioned with the NGSS involves using assessments. This DBER presentation will report on the latest NAS views regarding science proficiency assessments, as they were shared at all‐day workshop on …

Connecting Aphordably: The Place Of Memorably And Succinctly Stated Truths In Library Research Instruction, Calvin H. Wang Oct 2012

Connecting Aphordably: The Place Of Memorably And Succinctly Stated Truths In Library Research Instruction, Calvin H. Wang

Library Faculty Scholarship

This informal effort sought to generate a list of aphorisms to use in library research instruction sessions that are appropriate for audience members of all abilities and backgrounds. Aphorisms are succinct phrases of truth or opinion. They can be both established phrases that have been repurposed or novel ones that have been fabricated. The result of this effort is a collection that this instructor can employ readily and that audience members understand quickly and can remember easily. This presentation provides a strategy that recipients can individually validate and imitate.

A Comparison Of Representations For The Prediction Of Ground-Level Ozone Concentration, Benjamin Daniels, Steven Corns, Elizabeth Cudney Oct 2012

A Comparison Of Representations For The Prediction Of Ground-Level Ozone Concentration, Benjamin Daniels, Steven Corns, Elizabeth Cudney

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents a comparison of methods to predict ground-level ozone to highlight differences in the ability of the algorithms and to compare their performance to an established signal to noise-based prediction method. Existing data related to weather conditions and ground-level ozone was divided into a training set and a test set. Three algorithms were trained using the training set to create predictors, which were then analyzed with the test set, and then compared to the Taguchi Method to determine performance. It was found that the newly introduced R-LCS performed well on this problem, predictors using the Taguchi method had …

Commercial Sexual Exploitation And Missing Children In The Coastal Region Of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, Gilka Jorge Figaro Gattás, Claudia Figaro-Garcia, Tatiana Savoia Landini, Richard J. Estes

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) has emerged as one of the world’s most heinous crimes. The problem affects millions of children worldwide and no country or community is fully immune from its effects. This paper reports first generation research of the relationship that exists between CSEC and the phenomenon of missing children living in and around the coastal regions of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the country’s richest State. Data are reported from interviews and case records of 64 children and adolescents, who were receiving care through a major youth serving non-governmental organization (NGO) located in the …

Computerizing Social-Emotional Assessment For School Readiness: First Steps Toward An Assessment Battery For Early Childhood Settings, Susanne A. Denham, Hideko H. Bassett, Katherine Zinsser Oct 2012

Computerizing Social-Emotional Assessment For School Readiness: First Steps Toward An Assessment Battery For Early Childhood Settings, Susanne A. Denham, Hideko H. Bassett, Katherine Zinsser

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The transition into formal schooling is a crucial foundation that can set children on a cycle of success or failure in both academic and social domains. A child’s abilities to express healthy emotions, understand emotions of self and others, regulate emotion, attention, and behavior, make good decisions regarding social problems, and engage in a range of prosocial behaviors, all work together to promote a successful school experience.

However, many children have deficits in these skills by school entry, and educators lack the requisite tools to identify, track and assess skills these children need to learn. Thus, because social-emotional learning (SEL) …

Use Of Electronic Databases By Postgraduate Students And Research Scholars At Gbpuat Library, India, Tanveer Haider Naqvi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The aim of this paper is to examine the impact and use of e-databases at GBPUAT library because a huge amount is invested for the subscription, growth, and management of e-databases. The main aim is to determine the purpose of use of e-databases; and to find out their level of use, level of satisfaction, problems, and instructions/help in accessing of e-databases. To collect research data, questionnaire was administered randomly among 250 registered postgraduate students and research scholars of GBPUAT and 143 filled in questionnaires were returned. Finally, the researcher selected 137 useable questionnaires for the analysis using statistical techniques to …

Mathematical Modeling Of Craniospinal Hydrodynamics: Investigation Of Csf Dynamics And Compliance Function, Rong-Wen Tain Oct 2012

Mathematical Modeling Of Craniospinal Hydrodynamics: Investigation Of Csf Dynamics And Compliance Function, Rong-Wen Tain

Open Access Dissertations

During each heart beat, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows back and forth between the cranium and spinal canal. This pulsatile flow is driven by the pulsatile blood flow to the cranial vault and is modulated by the biomechanical properties of the craniospinal system (e.g., intracranial and spinal canal compliances). Considerable effort has been made over the last eight decades, primarily using invasive techniques, to understand the dynamics of the CSF pulsation and the role of each of the system’s sub-compartments in modulation of the CSF pulsation. Even with the significant technical advances in both invasive and non-invasive modalities over the …

Genetic Diversity Of Neotropical Myotis (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) With An Emphasis On South American Species, Roxanne J. Larsen, Michelle C. Knapp, Hugh H. Genoways, Faisal Ali Anwarali Khan, Peter A. Larsen, Don E. Wilson, Robert J. Baker Oct 2012

Genetic Diversity Of Neotropical Myotis (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) With An Emphasis On South American Species, Roxanne J. Larsen, Michelle C. Knapp, Hugh H. Genoways, Faisal Ali Anwarali Khan, Peter A. Larsen, Don E. Wilson, Robert J. Baker

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Background: Cryptic morphological variation in the Chiropteran genus Myotis limits the understanding of species boundaries and species richness within the genus. Several authors have suggested that it is likely there are unrecognized species-level lineages of Myotis in the Neotropics. This study provides an assessment of the diversity in New World Myotis by analyzing cytochrome-b gene variation from an expansive sample ranging throughout North, Central, and South America. We provide baseline genetic data for researchers investigating phylogeographic and phylogenetic patterns of Myotis in these regions, with an emphasis on South America.

Methodology and Principal Findings: Cytochrome-b sequences were generated and …

When Less Is More: Evolutionary Origins Of The Affect Heuristic, Jerald D. Kralik, Eric R. Xu, Emily J. Knight, Sara A. Khan, William J. Levine Oct 2012

When Less Is More: Evolutionary Origins Of The Affect Heuristic, Jerald D. Kralik, Eric R. Xu, Emily J. Knight, Sara A. Khan, William J. Levine

Dartmouth Scholarship

The human mind is built for approximations. When considering the value of a large aggregate of different items, for example, we typically do not summate the many individual values. Instead, we appear to form an immediate impression of the likeability of the option based on the average quality of the full collection, which is easier to evaluate and remember. While useful in many situations, this affect heuristic can lead to apparently irrational decision-making. For example, studies have shown that people are willing to pay more for a small set of high-quality goods than for the same set of high-quality goods …

Reconstructability Of Epistatic Functions, Martin Zwick, Joe Fusion, Beth Wilmot Oct 2012

Reconstructability Of Epistatic Functions, Martin Zwick, Joe Fusion, Beth Wilmot

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Reconstructability Analysis (RA) has been used to detect epistasis in genomic data; in that work, even the simplest RA models (variable-based models without loops) gave performance superior to two other methods. A follow-on theoretical study showed that RA also offers higher-resolution models, namely variable-based models with loops and state-based models, likely to be even more effective in modeling epistasis, and also described several mathematical approaches to classifying types of epistasis.

Methods: The present paper extends this second study by discussing a non-standard use of RA: the analysis of epistasis in quantitative as opposed to nominal variables; such quantitative variables …
