Assessment Of Clilmate Change Impacts On Streamflow Trends Using A Water Balance Model, Kevin. Matthews
Assessment Of Clilmate Change Impacts On Streamflow Trends Using A Water Balance Model, Kevin. Matthews
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Significant changes in climate and their impacts are now visible in various places around the globe and are expected to become more evident in the coming decades. For each increase in temperature, there are environmental and societal consequences. It has important implications for existing water resources systems as well as for future water resources planning and management. Water accounting (identifying, quantifying and reporting information of water flow in a system) is the first step towards formulating productive and sustainable water management strategies in a region. Thus, water balance models could be an empowering tool for water resource managers to prepare …

Attitude And Valence Dynamics In Response To Changes In Perceived Similarity Vs. Difference, Jay L. Michaels
Attitude And Valence Dynamics In Response To Changes In Perceived Similarity Vs. Difference, Jay L. Michaels
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Despite extensive research in conflict, relatively little is known about how psychological processes evolve over time in response to a dispute. The present research examines how cognitive and affective processes react to cooperative, competitive, or mixed cooperative-competitive interactions. Experimental predictions were derived from a model of two-actor interaction (Liebovitch, Naudot, Vallacher, Nowak, Bu--Wrzosinksa & Coleman, 2008). Specifically, it was expected that attitudes and emotional valence would exhibit stable dynamics when people encountered a neutral, continually cooperative, or continually competitive interaction. However, attitudes and emotional valence were expected to exhibit perturbation in response to transitions from cooperation to competition and vice-versa. …
Auc Estimation Under Various Survival Models, Fazhe. Chang
Auc Estimation Under Various Survival Models, Fazhe. Chang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In the medical science, the receiving operationg characteristic (ROC) curve is a graphical representation to evaluate the accuracy of a medical diagnostic test for any cut-off point. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) is an overall performance measure for a diagnostic test. There are two parts in this dissertation. In the first part, we study the properties of bi-Exponentiated Weibull models. FIrst, we derive a general moment formula for single Exponentiated Weibull models. Then we move on to derive the precise formula of AUC and study the maximus likelihood estimation (MLE) of the AUC. Finally, we obtain the asymptotoc …
Bones Of The Ox, Amanda M. Dutton
Bones Of The Ox, Amanda M. Dutton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Scholars have well established the influence of the Old and Middle English, Norse, Welsh, and also Medieval Latin and Christian mythologies that influenced the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. In particular, the mythology contained in The Silmarillion, specific the cosmology, behaves as sacred texts do in the primary world and mirrors a number of extant mythologies when they are directly compared. Several scholars have note, but as yet no one has studied in depth, the relationship between the cosmology the The Silmarillion to that of a number of extant ancient Near Eastern mythologies. This thesis seeks to address that gap in …
Rna Oxidative Damage And Ribosomal Rna Surveillance Under Oxidative Stress, Min Liu
Rna Oxidative Damage And Ribosomal Rna Surveillance Under Oxidative Stress, Min Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
We have studies oxidative damage of RNA, a major type of cellular macromolecules. RNA is a primary target of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Under oxidative stress, most nucleic acid damages in Escherichia coli (E.coli) are present in RNA as shown by high levels of 8-oxo-G, an oxidized form of guanine. Increased RNA oxidation is closely correlated to cell death under oxidative stress. Surprisingly, neither RNA structure nor association with proteins protects RNA from oxidation... Our results demonstrate a major role for RNA degradation in controlling oxidized RNA. We have identified activities that may work in specific pathways for selectively degrading …
Roma Uncovered, Alexi M. Velez
Roma Uncovered, Alexi M. Velez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The Roma people, often referred to by the derogatory misnomer of "gypsy," are an ethnic group plagued by (mis)representation in popular culture. Roma representations in cinema, literature, journalism, and other forms of popular culture have perpetuated a long history of Roma exclusion. This thesis aims to identify not only the many manifestations of Roma (mis)representation, but also apply anthropological theory as a means of analyzing the ramifications of such (mis)representations on the Roma people. This paper concludes with suggestions for an anthropologically informed methodology of representation, and hopes to challenge long standing stereotypes and misinformation about the Romani culture.

Social Play As A Tool For Developing Social-Cognitive Skills In A Wild Population Of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis), Courtney Elizabeth Bender
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purposes of this dissertation were to identify complex social-cognitive behaviors in a population of wild Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) using long-term video archives and identify developmental trends in those behaviors. Chapter One analyzed calf behavior during foraging events involving maternal teaching in order to identify mechanisms for sharing information between mother and calf... The calves' behavior was affected by the referencing cues, supporting the presence of joint attention and true teaching behavior....Chapter Two observed the altered benthic foraging behavior of juvenile play groups, in which juveniles took turns chasing the fish and using referencing gestures to reference the …
Paranthropus Face, Brittany A. Burdelsky
Paranthropus Face, Brittany A. Burdelsky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The Paranthropus head is characterized by features traditionally thought to be related to heavy chewing. McCollum [Science 284 (1999) : 301-305] proposed that palatal thickening is a response to developmental integration between the mandibular ramus, oral and nasal functional matrices, and the vomer, which inserts onto the premaxilla in Paranthropus and causes the palate to thicken instead of rotate during vertical expansion. I tested whether palate thickness increases as a byproduct of differential increases in the sizes of the oral and nasal functional matrices compared to growth in the mandibular ramus. To do so, I collected 3D volume and landmark …
Role Of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase In Thermal-Induced Spreading Depression Coma In Drosophila Melanogaster, Karin. Schey
Role Of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase In Thermal-Induced Spreading Depression Coma In Drosophila Melanogaster, Karin. Schey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Drosophila melanogaster encounter periods of increased temperature or decreased oxygen in its native environment. One consequence of these environmental stresses is increased production of reactive oxygen species that damage major molecules within cells. Another consequence is that flies fall into a protective coma where biological functions are minimized to conserve energy expenditures. This biological phenomenon is called spreading depression. The overarching aim of this project is to determine if methionine sulfoxide reductases affect entrance or exit from the protective coma induced by acute thermal stress. The data revealed that complete deficiency of Msr in young flies causes a faster induction …
Osteological Analysis Of Human Remains From Cusirisna Cave, Nicaragua, Kendra L. Philmon
Osteological Analysis Of Human Remains From Cusirisna Cave, Nicaragua, Kendra L. Philmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Cusirisna Cave was discovered in the 1870s by Dr. Earl Flint, an explorer for the Harvard Peabody Musuem. The human remains and artifacts found in the cave were collected and sent to the museum, where they have remained since, unanalyzed. In December 2011, Dr. Clifford T. Brown and I analyzed the osteological material and artifacts because we thought they might be related to the Preclassic cave complexes of neighboring Honduras, an idea originally suggested by Dr. James Brady. I analyzed the human remains while Dr. Brown studied the artifacts. This thesis presents the results of the analyses and compare the …
Optimization And Inductive Models For Continuous Estimation Of Hydrologic Variables, Ricardo Eric Brown
Optimization And Inductive Models For Continuous Estimation Of Hydrologic Variables, Ricardo Eric Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis develops methodologies for continuous estimation of hydrological variables which infill missing daily rainfall data and the forecast of weekly streamflows from a watershed. Several mathematical programming formulations were developed and used to estimate missing historical rainfall data. Functional relationships were created between radar precipitation and known rain gauge data then are used to estimate the missing data. Streamflow predictions models require highly non-linear mathematical models to capture the complex physical characteristics of a watershed. An artificial neural network model was developed for streamflow prediction. There are no set methods of creating a neural network and the selection of …
One Yard Shy Of Empowerment, Vividiana. Lieberman
One Yard Shy Of Empowerment, Vividiana. Lieberman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Sports are a primary zone of masculinity and sports films are a popular genre. One is hard pressed to find many leading female roles as athletes in male-dominated sports storylines. The cinematic portrayal of women athletes represents social attitudes and values and whether or not the women's movement has been able to influence representations and, concomitantly, social understandings of women and athleticism. My discussion of films featuring female athletes begins with National Velvet (1944) and ends with Whip It (2008). By examining select sports films centered on all female teams, co-ed teams and individual female athletes, I show how their …
Oranges And Inlets, Nathaniel Osborn
Oranges And Inlets, Nathaniel Osborn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Nineteenth century settlers in Florida's Indian River Lagoon (IRL) region created an isolated fringe culture wholly dependent on the instable hydrological forces of the shallow lagoon system. These settlers were among the first to construct a built environment market by the dredging and filling that would define much of the twentieth century Sunshine State. There has been no period when the liminal IRL ecosystem was not without shifting barrier islands and dramatically varying salinity levels due primarily to the oceanic interchange following the opening and closing of natural inlets. This paper suggests that attempts to "restore" the lagoon will necessarily …

In this dissertation we will present a stochastic optimization algorithm and use it and other mathematical techniques to tackle problems arising in medicinal chemistry. In Chapter 1, we present some background about stochastic optimization and the Accelerated Random Search (ARS) algorithm. We then present a novel improvement of the ARS algorithm, DIrected Accelerated Random Search (DARS), motivated by some theoretical results, and demonstrate through numerical results that it improves upon ARS. In Chapter 2, we use DARS and other methods to address issues arising from the use of mixture-based combinatorial libraries in drug discovery. In particular, we look at models …
Novel Function Of Sjam-C In Promoting Cytoskeleton Rearrangement And Migration In Mammary Epithelial Cells, Anila Qureshi
Novel Function Of Sjam-C In Promoting Cytoskeleton Rearrangement And Migration In Mammary Epithelial Cells, Anila Qureshi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Soluble form of Junctional adhesion molecule C (sJAM-C) has been identified to cause angiogenesis as well as chemotaxis in endothelial cells. However, the role of sJAM-C in the context of cancer has not been elucidated. Our atomic force microscopy (AFM) stiffness measurements of normal mammary epithelial cells (MCF 10A) have shown a two-fold decrease in cell's stiffness in response to sJAM-C. Changes in cell stiffness are indicative of modulations in a cell's mechanical properties. Our results indicated that sJAM-C increased the MCF 10A cell migration about two-fold and also promoted a three-fold increase in chemotaxis. Additionally, sJAM-C treatment resulted in …
Investigation Of The Role Of Pak6 Tumorigenesis, Joann Roberts
Investigation Of The Role Of Pak6 Tumorigenesis, Joann Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The function and role of PAK6, serine/threonone kinase, in cancer progressionhas not yet been clearly identified. Several studies reveal that PAK6 may participate in key changes contributing to cancer progression such as cell survival, cell motility, and invasiveness. Basedon the membrane localization of PAK6 in prostate and breast cancer cells,we speculated that PAK6 plays a rolein cancer progression cells by localizing on the membrane and modifying proteins linked to motility and proliferation. We isolated the raft domain of breast cancer cells expressing either wild type (WT), constitutively active (SN), or kinase dead PAK6 (KM) and found that PAK6 is a …
Characterization Of The Lap Aquarius Phantom For External Lap Laser Alignment And Magnetic Resonance Geometric Distortion Verification For Stereotactic Radiation Surgery Patient Simulation, Daniel Vergara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The Thesis explores additional applications of LAP's Aquarius external laser alignment verification Phantom by examining geometric accuracy of magnetic resonance images commonly used for planning intracranial stereotactic radiation surgery (ICSRS) cases. The scans were performed with MRI protocols used for ICSRS, and head and neck diagnosis, and their images fused to computerized tomographic (CT) images. The geometric distortions (GDs) were measured against the CT in all axial, sagittal, and coronal directions at different levels. Using the Aquarius Phantom, one is able to detect GD in ICSRS planning MRI acquisitions, and align the external LAP patient alignment lasers, by following the …

As part of a project to study internal waves, FAU plans to utilize an AUV to tow a magnetometer to study electromagnetic signatures from internal waves. This research is focused on the electromagnetic noise issues related to using an AUV to tow the magnetic sensor package. There are active sources of electromagnetic noise caused by an AUV that are present in addition to those induced by the Earth's magnetic field and permanent magnets. To characterize the magnetic noise associated with the AUV magnetometer tow system, the various active source elements were identified, the orientation sensitivity of the sensors being used …
Chemistry Of Briareum Asbestinum, Melody D. Rondeau
Chemistry Of Briareum Asbestinum, Melody D. Rondeau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Briareum asbestinum, a soft coral, is a rich source of diterpenoid natural products. The secondary metabolites of B. asbestinum fall into four classes : asbestinins, briarellins, briareolate esters, and briaranes. Briareolate esters have been shown to possess biological activity and were previously only reported from Tobago. Our group recently isolated briareolate esters from a specimen collected off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida. To determine whether location has an impact on the chemistry produced by the organism, a method to discern between chemotypes was sought. Several techniques including thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), nuclear magnetic resonance …
Chimpanzee Alarm Communications, Alyssa M. Raymond
Chimpanzee Alarm Communications, Alyssa M. Raymond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Evidence for conceptual semantics is well established in monkeys, however this basis of human language is less evident in the great apes. In order to study semantic communications in chimpanzees, I analyzed alarm calls produced towards a blimp as it was flying overhead. I then replayed a set of these alarm calls to the chimps on a different day. The chimps appeared to act in a manner consistent with the presence of the blimp. The calls they produced in response to the playback stimuli were nearly identical to the calls that were produced during the actual flyover. Though the data …
Comparing Salinity Models In Whitewater Bay Using Remote Sensing, Donna Selch
Comparing Salinity Models In Whitewater Bay Using Remote Sensing, Donna Selch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study compared models that used remote sensing to assess salinity in Whitewater Bay. The quantitative techniques in this research allow for a less costly and quicker assessment of salinity values. Field observations and Landsat 5 TM imagery from 2003-2006 were separated into wet and dry seasons and temporally matched. Interpolation models of Inverse Distance Weighting and Kriging were compared to empirical regression models (Ordinary Least Squares and Geographically Weighted Regression - GWR) via their Root Mean Square Error. The results showed that salinity analysis is more accurate in the dry season compared with the wet season. Univariate and multivariate …
Cleavage Of Brain Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase 65 By Calpain Under Pathological Conditions, Chandana Buddhala
Cleavage Of Brain Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase 65 By Calpain Under Pathological Conditions, Chandana Buddhala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Brain glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter-amino butyric acid (GABA) from the substrate L-glutamic acid. Severe lapse in GABA neurotransmission is one of the etiologies documented in the manifestation of certain neurodegenerative diseases such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease etc. Because GAD65 synthesizes GABA, any modulation of GAD65, therefore, has direct implications on the quanta of GABA released at the synapse. Hence, the major objective of this study was to focus on the regulation of GAD65, with special emphasis on investigating the proteolytic cleavage of fGAD65. Previously, we …
Comprehensive Study Of The Zad Family Of Zinc Finger Transcription Factors In Drosophila Melanogaster, Joseph. Krystel
Comprehensive Study Of The Zad Family Of Zinc Finger Transcription Factors In Drosophila Melanogaster, Joseph. Krystel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The zinc finger associated domain (ZAD) family of transcription factors from Drosophila melanogaster is not well described in the literature, in part because it is very difficult to study by traditional mutagenesis screens. Bioinformatic studies indicate this is due to overlapping functions remaining after a recent evolutionary divergence. I set out to use in vitro-binding techniques to identify the characteristics of the ZAD family and test this theory. I have constructed glutathione S-transferase (GST)-ZAD domain chimeric proteins for use in pull down protein binding assays, and GST-Zinc finger (ZnF) array domain chimera for electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA). Protein binding assays …
Comprehensive Study Of Mammalian Snag Transcription Family Members, Cindy Chung-Yue Chiang
Comprehensive Study Of Mammalian Snag Transcription Family Members, Cindy Chung-Yue Chiang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Transcriptional regulation by the family of SNAG (Snail/Gfi-1) zinc fingers has been shown to play a role in various developmental states and diseases. These transcriptional repressors have function in both DNA- and protein-binding, allowing for multiple interactions by a single family member. This work aims to characterize the SNAG members Slug, Smuc, Snail, Scratch, Gfi-1, Gfi-1B, and IA-1 in terms of both DNA-protein and protein-protein interactions. The specific DNA sequences to which the zinc finger regions bind were determined for each member, and a general consensus of TGCACCTGTCCGA, was developed for four of the members. Via these studies, we also …

Cytogenic Bioinformatics Of Chromosomal Aberrations And Genetic Disorders, Jagadeshwari. Karri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Cytogenetics is a study on the genetic considerations associated with structural and functional aspects of the cells with reference to chromosomal inclusions. Chromosomes are structures within the cells containing body's information in the form of strings of DNA. When atypical version or structural abnormality in one or more chromosomes prevails, it is defined as chromosomal aberrations (CA) depicting certain genetic pathogeny (known as genetic disorders). The present study assumes the presence of normal and abnormal chromosomal sets in varying proportions in the cytogenetic complex ; and, stochastical mixture theory is invoked to ascertain the information redundancy as a function of …

Simulations have been carried out to validate a hydrokinetic energy system non-dimensional scaling procedure. The requirements for a testing facility intended to test such devices will be determined from the results of the simulations. There are 6 simulations containing 3 prototype systems and 2 possible model facility depths to give a range of results. The first 4 tests are conducted using a varying current profile, while the last 2 tests use a constant current profile of 1.6 m/s. The 3 prototype systems include a: 6 m spherical buoy, a 12 m spherical buoy and a turbine component system. The mooring …
Detecting Essential Genes In Microarray Dataset With Unequal Number Of Gene Probes, Wei Zhang
Detecting Essential Genes In Microarray Dataset With Unequal Number Of Gene Probes, Wei Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Microarray technology is a powerful approach for genomic research, which allows the monitoring of expressing profiles for tens of thousands genes in parallel and is already producing huge amounts of data. This thesis is motivated by a special microarray dataset for the bacteria Yersinia Pestis. It contains more than four thousands genes and each gene has different number of observations. The main purpose of this thesis is to detect essentially functional genes. Gene level adjusted multiple t‐test is proposed to handle the problem of unequal number of observations. Furthermore, a comparation study of our method with two other existing methods …
Diet Variation And The Consumptive Effects Of Native Centrarchids On Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Wetlands, Jacob. Bransky
Diet Variation And The Consumptive Effects Of Native Centrarchids On Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Wetlands, Jacob. Bransky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Fish predation can have structuring effects in aquatic communities, but the most important fish predators are not always immediately obvious. Generalist fish predators often occupy similar habitats and consume similar prey making determination of their consumptive impacts difficult. Understanding these consumptive impacts is important for understanding complex wetland food webs. I collected warmouth (Lepomis gulosus), bluespotted sunfish (Enneacanthus gloriosus), and dollar sunfish (Lepomis marginatus) in two seasons from sloughs for both diet and bioenergetics analysis. Macroinvertebrates dominated diets of the three species, and nonparametric analyses revealed evidence of diet ontogeny in warmouth and potential competition for prey items among gape-matched …
Does Size Really Matter, Jessica A. Cuksick
Does Size Really Matter, Jessica A. Cuksick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) and spotted (Stenella frontalis) dolphins are sympatric species, resident to Little Bahama Bank, Bahamas. A unique, dynamic methodology quantified how interspecific aggression changed over time in terms of the individuals participating, context, and behaviors used. The timing of human observation relative to the onset of aggression did not result in differences in the proportion of behaviors observed. Highly intense behaviors were used most often. The synchronous state of spotted dolphin groups, not the presence alone, was a crucial factor in determining the onset and progression of aggression. When synchronous, spotted dolphins successfully dominated the larger bottlenose dolphins. …
