The Role Of Emotional Reactivity, Self-Regulation, And Puberty In Adolescents' Prosocial Behaviors, Gustavo Carlo, Lisa J. Crockett, Jennifer M. Wolff, Sarah J. Beal

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study was designed to examine the roles of emotional reactivity, self-regulation, and pubertal timing in prosocial behaviors during adolescence. Participants were 850 sixth graders (50% female, Mean age = 11.03, SD = .17) who were followed up at age 15. In hierarchical regression models, measures of emotional reactivity, self-regulation, pubertal timing and their interactions were used to predict (concurrently and over time) adolescents’ prosocial behaviors in the home and with peers. Overall, the findings provide evidence for pubertal and temperament based predictors of prosocial behaviors expressed in different contexts. Self-regulation was positively related to both forms of prosocial behavior, …

Diplomacy And Cosmopolitanism In A Globalized World, Adina Borcan Ph.D. Nov 2012

Diplomacy And Cosmopolitanism In A Globalized World, Adina Borcan Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Due to the fact that there is a new world culture, with increasing connections of varied local cultures, the characteristics of the 21st century seem to be globalization, seen as “a matter of increasing long-distance interconnectedness, at least across national boundaries, preferably between continents as well” (Hannerz, 1996, p. 17). However, despite this tendency towards globalization, there are still some communities who have no contacts even within the same country (different tribes from an African country, for example) or countries which are isolated due to political doctrine (North Korea, for example), where contact with the rest of the world is …

Teleological Reasoning In Adults: Believing In The Purpose Of Events, Carrie Jeanette Guggenmos Nov 2012

Teleological Reasoning In Adults: Believing In The Purpose Of Events, Carrie Jeanette Guggenmos

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Teleological reasoning reflects the general tendency to view objects, behaviors and events in terms of their “purpose.” Although healthy educated adults tend to refrain from committing errors in teleological reasoning about objects, our knowledge regarding how adults reason about events is limited. It has been suggested that teleological reasoning biases our interpretations of emotionally significant and unexpected life events of which a physical or social cause is absent or unsatisfactory. The current investigation seeks to better understand the types of events that evoke a teleological perspective and the conditions and individual difference factors that facilitate it. The results revealed that …

Performance And Scaling Of A Novel Locomotor Structure: Adhesive Capacity Of Climbing Gobiid Fishes, Richard W. Blob, Takashi Maie, Heiko L. Schoenfuss Nov 2012

Performance And Scaling Of A Novel Locomotor Structure: Adhesive Capacity Of Climbing Gobiid Fishes, Richard W. Blob, Takashi Maie, Heiko L. Schoenfuss

Publications

Many species of gobiid fishes adhere to surfaces using a sucker formed from fusion of the pelvic fins. Juveniles of many amphidromous species use this pelvic sucker to scale waterfalls during migrations to upstream habitats after an oceanic larval phase. However, adults may still use suckers to re-scale waterfalls if displaced. If attachment force is proportional to sucker area and if growth of the sucker is isometric, then increases in the forces that climbing fish must resist might outpace adhesive capacity, causing climbing performance to decline through ontogeny. To test for such trends, we measured pressure differentials and adhesive suction …

Evolution And Development In Cave Animals: From Fish To Crustaceans, Meredith E. Protas, William R. Jeffery Nov 2012

Evolution And Development In Cave Animals: From Fish To Crustaceans, Meredith E. Protas, William R. Jeffery

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Cave animals are excellent models to study the general principles of evolution as well as the mechanisms of adaptation to a novel environment: the perpetual darkness of caves. In this article, two of the major model systems used to study the evolution and development (evo–devo) of cave animals are described: the teleost fish Astyanax mexicanus and the isopod crustacean Asellus aquaticus. The ways in which these animals match the major attributes expected of an evo–devo cave animal model system are described. For both species, we enumerate the regressive and constructive troglomorphic traits that have evolved during their adaptation to cave …

The Long And Short Of It: The Role Of Telomeres In Fetal Origins Of Adult Disease, Stephanie E. Hallows, Timothy R.H. Regnault, Dean H. Betts

Paediatrics Publications

Placental insufficiency, maternal malnutrition, and other causes of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) can significantly affect short-term growth and long-term health. Following IUGR, there is an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and Type 2 Diabetes. The etiology of these diseases is beginning to be elucidated, and premature aging or cellular senescence through increased oxidative stress and DNA damage to telomeric ends may be initiators of these disease processes. This paper will explore the areas where telomere and telomerase biology can have significant effects on various tissues in the body in IUGR outcomes. © 2012 Stephanie E. Hallows et al.

Vibrations Of Crystal Plates With Surface Structures For Resonator And Sensor Applications, Nan Liu Nov 2012

Vibrations Of Crystal Plates With Surface Structures For Resonator And Sensor Applications, Nan Liu

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation is mainly on the theoretical analysis of vibrating crystal plates for acoustic wave resonator and sensor applications. The frequency and mode effects of different surface structures on either or both sides of the crystal plates are the main concerns in this dissertation. These effects are fundamental to the improvement of existing acoustic wave devices, or to the design of new acoustic wave devices, especially new sensors based on these effects.

At first, two-dimensional equations of motion for an anisotropic crystal plate with two thin films on its surfaces are derived by reduction from the three-dimensional equations of anisotropic …

Control Of 1,4-Anthraquinone Crystal Growth, Tyler Holm Nov 2012

Control Of 1,4-Anthraquinone Crystal Growth, Tyler Holm

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Quinones are widely found in nature, used in chemistry and medicine, and are just beginning to gain importance in materials engineering. In order to harvest their potential as an ordered or highly crystalline solid, their crystal formation processes need to be well investigated and controlled.

We chose 1,4-anthraquinone, a commercially available type of quinone, as a model compound to study its crystal growth behavior. These crystals were deposited through evaporation of a solution containing the anthraquinone and were subsequently studied through microscopy and various other methods. The effects of solvent variation, temperature, and impurities on crystal growth were all explored. …

The Isolation And Identification Of A Causative Agent Of The Feather Disorder Found In African Penguins (Spheniscus Demersus), Stephen Mele, Kristin F. Picardo, Gregory B. Cunningham, Daryl D. Hurd Nov 2012

The Isolation And Identification Of A Causative Agent Of The Feather Disorder Found In African Penguins (Spheniscus Demersus), Stephen Mele, Kristin F. Picardo, Gregory B. Cunningham, Daryl D. Hurd

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Beginning in 2006, wild juvenile African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) began to prematurely lose their juvenile feathers without immediate regrowth and were brought to the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) for rehabilitation5. Without immediate regrowth of feathers, energy is shunted away from growth and used for thermoregulation and metabolism. It has previously been hypothesized that potential viral and bacterial infections may be causing this disorder3,4. To test for this, Avian Polyomavirus (APV) nucleic acids, Budrigars Beak and Feather Disease Virus (BFDV) nucleic acids, and any bacterial nucleic acids were attempted to be isolated from the blood …

Air-Sea Interface In Hurricane Conditions, Alexander Soloviev, A. Fujimura, Silvia Matt Nov 2012

Air-Sea Interface In Hurricane Conditions, Alexander Soloviev, A. Fujimura, Silvia Matt

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Improving hurricane prediction models requires better understanding of complex processes taking place at the air-sea interface at high wind speeds. The change of the air-sea interaction regime in hurricane conditions has been linked to the mechanism of direct disruption of the air-sea interface by pressure fluctuations working against the surface tension force. This can be achieved through the Kelvin-Helmholtz type instability. In order to investigate this mechanism, we have conducted a series of 3D numerical experiments using a volume of fluid multiphase model. The experiments were initialized with either a flat interface or short wavelets and wind stress applied at …

Objective—Diminished serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities (measures of paraoxonase-1 [PON-1] function) in humans have been linked to heightened systemic oxidative stress and atherosclerosis risk. The clinical prognostic use of measuring distinct PON-1 activities has not been established, and the genetic determinants of PON-1 activities are not known. Methods and Results—We established analytically robust high-throughput assays for serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities and measured these in 3668 stable subjects undergoing elective coronary angiography without acute coronary syndrome and were prospectively followed for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE= death, myocardial infarction, stroke) over 3 years. Low serum arylesterase and paraoxonase activities were …

Manager's View: Sheep Creek Aspen Restoration

Tim Benedict

The intrigue of quaking aspen is shared by many because of colorful expression, soothing almost melodic sound, and biological diversity amid an ocean of conifers. Consider someday managing and researching aspen stands where restoration has never been tried and being able to claim, “A first.” When creating vision, it has been said, “Seek out partners that have similar goals and connect with a cause waiting to happen.” What you do today will be the history of tomorrow. That describes the spirit this project was launched with and today the Sheep Creek Aspen …

Effects Of Scleroderma Antibodies And Pooled Human Immunoglobulin On Anal Sphincter And Colonic Smooth Muscle Function., Jagmohan Singh, Sidney Cohen, Vaibhav Mehendiratta, Fabian A. Mendoza, Sergio A. Jimenez, Anthony J. Dimarino, Satish Rattan

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) have impairments in gastrointestinal smooth muscle function. The disorder has been associated with circulating antibodies to cholinergic muscarinic the type-3 receptor (M(3)-R). We investigated whether it is possible to neutralize these antibodies with pooled human IgGs (pooledhIgG).

METHODS: We studied the effects of IgGs purified from patients with SSc (SScIgGs) on cholinergic nerve stimulation in rat colon tissues. We also examined the effects of SScIgGs on M(3)-R activation by bethanechol (BeCh), M(3)-R occupancy, and receptor binding using immunofluorescence, immunoblot, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent analyses of human internal anal sphincter (IAS) smooth muscle cells, …
