Nietzsche's Theory Of Cognition: An Interpretation And Defense Of Perspectivism, Justin R. Marquis Jan 2012

Nietzsche's Theory Of Cognition: An Interpretation And Defense Of Perspectivism, Justin R. Marquis

Dissertations

Friedrich Nietzsche has long been recognized as a pivotal thinker in the history of moral philosophy, but until the last quarter century his importance for our understanding of the concepts of truth and knowledge had been largely ignored in English-language scholarship. In my dissertation, I add to the growing discussion on Nietzsche's theory of human cognition. While more attention has recently been given to this dimension of Nietzsche's thought, several key aspects have been largely ignored or insufficiently treated including the effects that the ethical or evaluative domain have on the way we cognize the world, the role that radical …

Permanence And Stability Of Placement : An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Foster And Adoptive Parent Training, Alexis Boerlage Jan 2012

Permanence And Stability Of Placement : An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Foster And Adoptive Parent Training, Alexis Boerlage

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Achieving permanence and stability, both emotionally and physically, is a major goal for most people. This goal begins to surface early in life within the family setting. Unfortunately, children who have been subjected to abuse and/or neglect at the hands of their caregivers may face the grave consequence of lack of permanency and instability within their family systems. This grave consequence is one that can have a negative effect on a person’s future. In order to prevent this from occurring, the Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services (DSES), Family and Children Services works to provide children, who have …

Simulating Molecular Mechanisms Of The Mdm2-Mediated Regulatory Interactions: A Conformational Selection Model Of The Mdm2 Lid Dynamics, Gennady M. Verkhivker Jan 2012

Simulating Molecular Mechanisms Of The Mdm2-Mediated Regulatory Interactions: A Conformational Selection Model Of The Mdm2 Lid Dynamics, Gennady M. Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Diversity and complexity of MDM2 mechanisms govern its principal function as the cellular antagonist of the p53 tumor suppressor. Structural and biophysical studies have demonstrated that MDM2 binding could be regulated by the dynamics of a pseudo-substrate lid motif. However, these experiments and subsequent computational studies have produced conflicting mechanistic models of MDM2 function and dynamics. We propose a unifying conformational selection model that can reconcile experimental findings and reveal a fundamental role of the lid as a dynamic regulator of MDM2-mediated binding. In this work, structure, dynamics and energetics of apo-MDM2 are studied as a function of posttranslational modifications …

Incurable Blackness: Criminal Disenfranchisement, Mental Disability, And The White Citizen, Andrew Dilts Jan 2012

Incurable Blackness: Criminal Disenfranchisement, Mental Disability, And The White Citizen, Andrew Dilts

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

The Maryland State Constitution states that its General Assembly may, "regulate or prohibit the right to vote of a person convicted of infamous or other serious crime or under care or guardianship for mental disability." In a single sentence, the link between criminality and mental disability is invoked in order to draw an internal boundary around those who can take part in the project of representative government. Through a close reading of one particular moment in the history of Maryland's disenfranchisement provisions, I show how these restrictions could buttress prevailing racial hierarchies. Delegates to Maryland's nineteenth century constitutional conventions explicitly …

How Drunk Am I? Misperceiving One’S Level Of Intoxication In The College Drinking Environment, Sean Grant, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Andrew Lac Jan 2012

How Drunk Am I? Misperceiving One’S Level Of Intoxication In The College Drinking Environment, Sean Grant, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Andrew Lac

Heads Up!

Objective

One effective event-level index that can assist in identifying risky intoxication levels among college students is blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Despite widespread exposure to BAC information, doubt exists as to whether American college students can accurately estimate their own BAC level or drinking behaviors while intoxicated. This study assessed whether students can accurately guesstimate their BAC level (gBAC) and drinking behaviors used to estimate BAC (eBAC) while drinking in social college settings

Method

Participants (N = 225; 56.4% male) consisted of emerging adults attending either a two- or four-year college who had at least one alcoholic drink within …

Characterization Of Radially Symmetric Finite Time Blowup In Multidimensional Aggregation Equations, Andrea L. Bertozzi, John B. Garnett, Thomas Laurent Jan 2012

Characterization Of Radially Symmetric Finite Time Blowup In Multidimensional Aggregation Equations, Andrea L. Bertozzi, John B. Garnett, Thomas Laurent

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This paper studies the transport of a mass $\mu$ in $\mathbb{R}^d, d \geq 2,$ by a flow field $v= -\nabla K*\mu$. We focus on kernels $K=|x|^\alpha/ \alpha$ for $2-d\leq \alpha<2$ for which the smooth densities are known to develop singularities in finite time. For this range we prove the existence for all time of radially symmetric measure solutions that are monotone decreasing as a function of the radius, thus allowing for continuation of the solution past the blowup time. The monotone constraint on the data is consistent with the typical blowup profiles observed in recent numerical studies of these singularities. We prove monotonicity is preserved for all time, even after blowup, in contrast to the case $\alpha >2$ where radially symmetric solutions are known to lose monotonicity. In the case of the Newtonian potential ($\alpha=2-d$), under the assumption of radial symmetry the equation can be transformed into the inviscid Burgers equation on a half line. This enables us to prove preservation of monotonicity using the classical theory of conservation laws. In the case $2 -d < \alpha < 2$ and at the critical exponent p we exhibit initial data in $L^p$ for which the solution immediately develops a Dirac mass singularity. This extends recent work on the local ill-posedness of solutions at the critical exponent.

Agencies and organizations deploy various strategies in response to environmental challenges, including the formulation of policy, programs, and regulations. Citizen-based environmental stewardship is increasingly seen as an innovative and important approach to improving and conserving landscape health. A new research focus on the stewardship of urban natural resources is being launched by the U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest region. Early scoping efforts are addressing various scales of human systems ranging from individuals to organizations to the entire positive “footprint” of stewardship on the land. This report addresses a fundamental need—to understand and describe civic environmental stewardship in urban …

"Don't Drop The Soap": Organizing Sexualities In The Repeal Of The Us Military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy, Craig Rich, Julie Kalil Schutten, Richard A. Rogers Jan 2012

"Don't Drop The Soap": Organizing Sexualities In The Repeal Of The Us Military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy, Craig Rich, Julie Kalil Schutten, Richard A. Rogers

Communication Studies Faculty Works

Guided by critical, feminist, and queer approaches to organizational communication, this paper critically analyzes the United States military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy and the Department of Defense's (2010) report recommending DADT's repeal. Rather than fostering genuine integration, the repeal report reproduces the conditions that marginalize queer soldiers under DADT, relegating gays and lesbians to the hyper-private (closet) while constructing an asexual veneer for the military organization. Such closeting remains necessary due to the threat that "openly" gay men pose to the image of the soldier as an impenetrable predator. Finally, the recommendation to deny sexual orientation the status …

Multi-Protein Detection Of Endothelial Cell Inflammation And Single Cells' Heterogeneity Study, Jingwen Chai Jan 2012

Multi-Protein Detection Of Endothelial Cell Inflammation And Single Cells' Heterogeneity Study, Jingwen Chai

Master's Theses and Capstones

Endothelial inflammation plays major roles in all phases of atherosclerotic process and both innate immunity and endothelial adhesion molecules contribute to endothelial inflammation. In this thesis, there are three main parts regarding the endothelial cell inflammation and multiple protein detection. In the first part, we applied multiple antibodies (Abs) to measure changes in expression levels of six proteins in response to inflammatory stimulation, and we observed different dynamic behaviors in them. In the second part, we applied emission fingerprinting technique provided by Zeiss LSM 510 META detector, and achieved the concurrent detection of ten proteins expressed on the same endothelial …

Myricetin Inhibits Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (Iapp) Aggregation And Rescues Living Mammalian Cells From Iapp Toxicity, Casey Zelus, Ayano Fox, Anastasia Calciano, Bianca S. Faridian, Luiza A. Nogaj, David A. Moffet

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

The aggregation of the amyloidogenic polypeptide IAPP (Islet Amyloid Polypeptide, amylin) is believed to play a direct role in the death of pancreatic β-islet cells in type II diabetes. Preventing the initial aggregation event of IAPP is one strategy for slowing, and possibly preventing, the progression of this disease. Here, we investigate myricetin’s potential as an inhibitor of IAPP aggregation. We show that myricetin prevented thioflavin T binding in a concentration dependent manner. Atomic force microscopy revealed that myricetin prevented fiber formation under rigorous conditions conducive to forming IAPP aggregates. Using an IAPP-EGFP (Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein) protein construct, we …

The Effect Of A Dietary Supplement (N-Oleyl-Phosphatidyl-Ethanolamine And Epigallocatechin Gallate) On Dietary Compliance And Body Fat Loss In Adults Who Are Overweight: A Double-Blind, Randomized Control Trial, William Mccormack

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Background: A dietary supplement containing a blend of 170mg of N-oleyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (NOPE) and 100mg of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been shown to improve compliance to low caloric diets. Considering the cost of dietary ingredients, many manufacturers attempt to determine the lowest efficacious dose. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 8-weeks of supplementation with a daily intake of 120mg of NOPE and 105mg of EGCG in conjunction with a low caloric diet and regular, moderate exercise on dietary compliance in healthy, overweight adults. An additional purpose was to examine the effect of this supplement/diet/exercise paradigm on …

Body Mass Index Change In Adulthood And Lung And Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancers, Heather Tarleton Jan 2012

Body Mass Index Change In Adulthood And Lung And Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancers, Heather Tarleton

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Body mass index (BMI) has been inversely associated with lung and upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancers. However, only a few studies have assessed BMI change in adulthood in relation to cancer. To understand the relationship between BMI change and these cancers in both men and women, we analyzed data from a population-based case-control study conducted in Los Angeles County. Adulthood BMI change was measured as the proportional change in BMI between age 21 and 1 year before interview or diagnosis. Five categories of BMI change were included, and individuals with no more than a 5% loss or gain were defined …

Role Of Twin Cys-Xaa9-Cys Motif Cysteines In Mitochondrial Import Of The Cytochrome C Oxidase Biogenesis Factor Cmc1, Deepa V. Dabir Jan 2012

Role Of Twin Cys-Xaa9-Cys Motif Cysteines In Mitochondrial Import Of The Cytochrome C Oxidase Biogenesis Factor Cmc1, Deepa V. Dabir

Biology Faculty Works

The Mia40 import pathway facilitates the import and oxidative folding of cysteine-rich protein substrates into the mitochondrial intermembrane space. Here we describe the in vitro and in organello oxidative folding of Cmc1, a twin CX9C-containing substrate, which contains an unpaired cysteine. In vitro, Cmc1 can be oxidized by the import receptor Mia40 alone when in excess or at a lower rate by only the sulfhydryl oxidase Erv1. However, physiological and efficient Cmc1 oxidation requires Erv1 and Mia40. Cmc1 forms a stable intermediate with Mia40 and is released from this interaction in the presence of Erv1. The three proteins are shown …

Society, Demography And Genetic Structure In The Spotted Hyena, Heather E. Watts Jan 2012

Society, Demography And Genetic Structure In The Spotted Hyena, Heather E. Watts

Biology Faculty Works

Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are large mammalian carnivores, but their societies, called 'clans', resemble those of such cercopithecine primates as baboons and macaques with respect to their size, hierarchical structure, and frequency of social interaction among both kin and unrelated group-mates. However, in contrast to cercopithecine primates, spotted hyenas regularly hunt antelope and compete with group-mates for access to kills, which are extremely rich food sources, but also rare and ephemeral. This unique occurrence of baboon-like sociality among top-level predators has favoured the evolution of many unusual traits in this species. We briefly review the relevant socio-ecology of spotted hyenas, …

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Hafting On Paleoindian Point Variability, B. Buchanan, Michael J. O'Brien, J. D. Kilby, B. B. Huckell, M. Collard

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

It has long been argued that the form of North American Paleoindian points was affected by hafting. According to this hypothesis, hafting constrained point bases such that they are less variable than point blades. The results of several studies have been claimed to be consistent with this hypothesis. However, there are reasons to be skeptical of these results. None of the studies employed statistical tests, and all of them focused on points recovered from kill and camp sites, which makes it difficult to be certain that the differences in variability are the result of hafting rather than a consequence of …

Brain Penetration Of Tolfenamic Acid And Its Ability To Enhance The Cognitive Functions And To Lower Amyloid Pathology In Animal Models Of Alzheimer's Disease, Gehad Mohammed Subaiea

Open Access Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is responsible for up to 80% of all dementia cases. Hallmarks of AD include the presence of beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposits and twisted strands of abnormal hyperphosphorylated tau forming neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), which ultimately lead to damage and death of nerve cells in the brain. Symptoms of the disease include impairments in cognitive and functional abilities that gradually worsen as the disease progress. Finally, in advanced AD, patients become unable to perform basic daily activities, become more susceptible to infections, and ultimately die. Only five drugs are FDA-approved for use in …
