The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a health promotion intervention program (TIPTOP package) in preventing early childhood caries (ECC), to improve nutritional status and dietary habits among toddlers. The study design was an intervention prospective study and conducted in Tumpat and Pasir Mas districts in Kelantan. The intervention group was 2-3 year old toddlers in Tumpat and received the TIPTOP package, while the control group was in Pasir Mas and received the normal toddlers’ oral health program under the MOH. Selected sperm and oocyte factors related were evaluated in ICSI experiments involving mouse and goat species in the present study. The mouse oocyte collection was conducted through oviduct retrieval, while the goat oocytes were retrieved via LOPU technique. The effectiveness of sperm capacitation chemical treatment (Heparin and Theophylline) for 1 hour and sperm movement (Rapid and Slow) were identified in both species. For oocyte factors, the effects of post-hCG injection durations (13-15 hours and 16-18 hours) in mice were studied. The ecology of fishes was investigated in Tasek Bera (Lake Bera), a peat swamp ecosystem with three major habitats: (i) swamp forest dominated by Eugenia, (ii) Reed (Lepironia) and clumps of Pandanus stands and (iii) open waters fringed by submerged Utricularia. Nanowires of SnO2 have been successfully synthesized using a modified, simplified and less complicated carbothermal reduction technique, namely thermal ramping technique. This technique is developed to ease the synthesis process of nanowires for the development of gas sensing device. Contrary to conventional carbothermal reduction technique, no inert gas as a carrier is required. Distance of source material to substrates parameter is also eliminated. This study is a comparison between physical parameters and soil characteristics of two mangrove habitats on Carey Island. Selected parameters were conducted at three stations in mangrove habitat (Site 1) along the Langat River which contain a good community of mangrove forest. Similar study was also conducted in a degraded mangrove habitat along eroding sea line (Site 2). In Site 1; the water parameters featured high and almost constant salinity, high water temperature, high conductivity but relatively low dissolved oxygen concentration and high TDS. Malaysian Chinese are highly susceptible to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Because NPC is often diagnosed at a late stage, accurate EBV serologic tests might be useful to detect NPC in patients with subtle symptoms. And because EBV serological data for Malaysian Chinese are currently lacking, we sought to develop indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for a case-control study of NPC in Malaysian Chinese. The obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, is the etiologic agent of an opportunistic infection affecting mainly immunocompromised patients, infants and neonates with immature immune system. There is a need for alternative antiparasitic treatment for toxoplasmosis due to the associated toxicity and teratogenicity of the current drug treatment regime. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the main bacterial pathogens responsible for a variety of nosocomial infections ranging from soft-tissue infections to bacteremia. Since most MRSA is often resistant to multiple antibiotics, this has raised a concern over the limited choice of antimicrobial-agents for treatment of life-threatening cases. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in bivalves which belong to the phase II detoxification metabolism, have an advantage to be used as biomarkers of aquatic pollution. The preliminary study was to isolate and purify the GSTs from Malaysian bivalve, Orbicularia orbiculata or locally known as Siput Lala. The GST enzyme was purified by using two different matrices of affinity chromatography which were GSTrapTM HP and GSH-agarose (C3). Total proteins attained from both eluates were 0.24±0.003mg and 0.12±0.07mg for GSTrapTM HP column and GSH-agarose (C3) column, respectively. Goniothalamus tapisoides Mat Salleh, a plant from Annonaceae family, has been studied. Collected from Sarawak, the bark of this plant were dried and grounded before phytochemical study was performed. The chromatographic separation on the dichloromethane extracts of the bark gave eleven compounds – six known and five new. Six known compounds were identified as goniothalamin 1, pterodondiol 164, liriodenine 114, 9-deoxygoniopypyrone 15, benzamide 161 and cinnamic acid 155. Five new compounds are goniomicin A 157, goniomicin B 158, goniomicin C 159, goniomicin D 160 and tapisoidin 162.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous tumour-causing virus which infects more than 90% of world population asymptomatically. It is closely associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). LMP-1, -2A and -2B are three latent membrane proteins (LMPs) encoded by EBV which are frequently detected in NPC tumour. Recent studies suggest that these three proteins co-operate in the tumorigenesis of NPC but the mechanism is not clear. A preliminary study on the chemical constituents of Aglaia exima was performed. The leaves of Aglaia exima was extracted in three different solvents: hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. Bcl-xL is an anti-apoptotic protein that is frequently found to be overexpressed in lung adenocarcinoma leading to an inhibition of apoptosis and associated with poor prognosis of this disease. Recently, the roles of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating apoptosis and cell survival during tumorigenesis have become evident, with cancer cells showing perturbed expression of various miRNAs. This research was made to study the antimicrobial activity of fungal isolates from different regions of maritime, Antarctica, namely, King George Island and Greenwich Island (Barrientos Island, Dee Island and Ambato point). A total of 17 isolates composed of 7 mesophilic and 10 psychrotrophic fungi were tested in-vitro against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and yeast human pathogens. Initial antimicrobial activity screening of Antarctic isolates was made using plug assay method. Climate change components such as sea level rise and increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is likely to affect plant communities at various scales. Mangrove ecosystems are highly threatened by the sea level rise as a result of prolonged waterlogging. Four sets of experiments were set up to study the ecology and physiology of Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina and Bruguiera parviflora under simulated sea level rise. In elevated sea level, A. alba and B. parviflora indicated similar responses with initial height increments, decreased stem diameter and leaf formation; and increased leaf fall. Spatial and temporal distributions of phytoplankton were investigated at Carey Island, Banting, Selangor. Sampling was started on April 2009 until March 2010 and was done during high tide and low tide at 3 different stations (ST1, ST2 and ST3). In this study the relations of spatial and temporal composition of phytoplankton with environmental parameters which mainly the physiochemical parameters were determined. This thesis describes the synthesis of a library of chalcones and several flavanones and 1,5-benzothiazepines derived from chalcones and some biological studies of these compounds against neuraminidase (NA). The environmentally benign one-pot method using PMA/SiO2 in ethanol has successfully been applied toward the preparation of flavanone analogues from 2¢- hydroxychalcones, 2¢-aminochalcones and 2¢-mercaptochalcones in reasonable yields. Reactions were screened in a variety of parameters, including solvents, temperatures, reaction time and amount of catalyst used.
