The Effects Of Manufactured Nanoparticles On Fish Physiology, Reproduction And Behaviour, Christopher Ramsden
The Effects Of Manufactured Nanoparticles On Fish Physiology, Reproduction And Behaviour, Christopher Ramsden
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Over the last decade the development and use of nanomaterials (NMs) and nanoparticles (NPs) has increased at a great rate. As a result there is an ever increasing risk of exposing humans and wildlife to these potentially harmful materials. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are two of the most widely used NMs at present. Their potentially harmful effects on organisms and physicochemical properties have been investigated in a growing number of scientific studies. However understanding the level of risk they may pose is far from satisfactory. The present body of work has addressed various aspects of …
Parental Care And The Development Of The Parent Offspring Conflict In Discus Fish (Symphysodon Spp.), Jonathan Buckley
Parental Care And The Development Of The Parent Offspring Conflict In Discus Fish (Symphysodon Spp.), Jonathan Buckley
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Parental care has evolved across the animal kingdom to increase the probability of offspring surviving in an environment fraught with danger. While parental care is common among mammals and birds, it is relatively rare in fish with the vast majority of fish showing no form of parental care at all, whilst those that do, often just provide parental care to developing eggs pre-hatch. The provision of parental care in discus fish (Symphysodon spp.) is, therefore, interesting in that parents provide mucus to offspring as a source of nutrition during the first few weeks of care. In mammals this post-birth provision …

Molecular Studies Of Karenia Mikimotoi (Dinophyceae) From The Celtic Sea Region, Manal A. Al-Kandari
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
K. mikimotoi has been classified under many names and has been mis-assigned to different species and genera in the North Atlantic and Pacific because of its morphological similarities to other Gymnodinoid species. It is now known to be widely distributed, but there remain unresolved questions about whether K. mikimotoi was introduced into the North Sea from Japanese waters, or whether it has always inhabited this region and been erroneously classified as Gymnodinium spp. or has been a part of the hidden flora prior to be recognised in a bloom off the Norwegian coast in 1966. To address questions about geographical …

Leadership Of Identified Gifted Compared To High-Potential Students Studying Iowa's Natural History, Katie E. Broeg
Leadership Of Identified Gifted Compared To High-Potential Students Studying Iowa's Natural History, Katie E. Broeg
Graduate Research Papers
At one time, students were only considered gifted if they received a score of 140 or higher on an IQ test. Renowned gifted researcher, Joseph Renzulli, challenged this notion with his three-ring conception of giftedness; an interaction between above average ability, creativity, and task-commitment in areas of passion. Renzulli also promoted the development of leadership and social capital through Operation Houndstooth.
Today, the national definition for gifted children acknowledges academics, leadership, arts, and creative talents. Schools are beginning to expand their definitions and identification procedures to acknowledge students with creative talents and leadership abilities. How do these students compare when …

Correlation Between Science Process Skills Proficiency In Pre-Service Elementary Teachers And Academic Achievement, Laura Witt Dawson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Inquiry has been an essential part of science education since the Alphabet Curriculum was published. Science process skills (SPS) were first defined in 1968 and today SPS are the skills of inquiry. These skills are central to science education, and should be part of the curriculum at every level, from elementary to post-secondary school. In order to successfully teach SPS to students, teachers must have a thorough understanding of both sets of skills. This study focused on the pre-service elementary teacher population and investigated this population's SPS proficiency. This study investigated inquiry-based courses for pre-service elementary teachers, and focused on …

Healthface: A Web-Based Remote Monitoring Interface For Medical Healthcare Systems Based On A Wireless Body Area Sensor Network, İsmai̇l Kirbaş, Cüneyt Bayilmiş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The wireless body area sensor network (WBASN) is a type of wireless sensor network. The wireless sensor nodes in a WBASN are placed on, near, or within a human body. In a medical healthcare system, WBASNs continuously provide healthcare monitoring, especially of elderly or ill people, wherever the patient goes. Wireless nodes sense and process human vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and respiration. They then send collected data to a medical center via a base station in order for medical professionals to monitor the patient's health. In the medical center, doctors and caregivers need monitoring …

Palaeoclimate Estimates For Selected Leaf Floras From The Late Pliocene (Reuverian) Of Central Europe Based On Different Palaeobotanical Techniques, Christine Thiel, Stefan Klotz, Dieter Uhl
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
To provide quantitative palaeoclimate estimates based on different palaeobotanical techniques for three contemporaneous Pliocene leaf floras, we applied the Coexistence Approach (CoA), leaf margin analysis (LMA), the Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP) and the European Leaf Physiognomic Approach (ELPA). Furthermore, we compared recently published estimates from an additional locality with our data. The leaf physiognomic techniques yield lower mean annual temperatures than the CoA, which is most likely caused by taphonomic biases. Due to these potential biases we are in favour of the CoA as the most reliable method, and its palaeotemperature estimates show similar temperatures for all localities. …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A novel Zn phthalocyanine bearing 4 salicylideniminophenyloxy substituents on peripheral positions was synthesized from the reaction of 4-aminophenoxy substituted phthalocyanine and salicylaldehyde. The condensation reaction of salicylidene Schiff base groups and benzeneboronic acid produced a new phthalocyanine carrying benzeneboronic acid ester derivatives as substituents. Ethoxy groups were bound to boronic acid as a second ligand. The presence of B-N bond interactions enhanced the stability of this boronated phthalocyanine derivative, which exhibited sufficient air stability during the purification and characterization processes. The novel compounds were characterized by using elemental analysis, IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{11}B-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, UV-Vis and MALDI-TOF MS spectral data.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene variants and their possible association with coronary artery disease (CAD) in Şanlıurfa province. Materials and methods: We used polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme digestion to determine the prevalence of the ESR1 gene (NM_001122742.1, GI: 2099): c.454-351 A>G (XbaI A>G) and c.454-397 T>C (PvuII T>C) polymorphisms in 100 healthy individuals and 80 angiographically confirmed CAD patients. Results: The body mass index (28.1 ± 5.4), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (126.1 ± 42 mg/dL), diabetes (n = 13), and hypertension (n = …

Urothelial cancers are currently diagnosed more commonly parallel to the recent developments in imaging techniques. Early diagnosis of these tumors, together with better treatment options, decreases the morbidity and the mortality significantly. This review aims to summarize the imaging findings of urothelial tumors, both at the pretreatment and posttreatment follow-up stage.

Almost five million barrels of south Louisiana crude oil were released into the environment following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform on April 20, 2010, however, little is known of the effects of the spill to native species of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Field studies provide a context for ecological realism but laboratory- based studies can connect the specific cause to a specific biological response. A previous field study, completed in 2010, tracked genome expression responses in native killifish resident in oiled and several non-oiled marshes in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Those data suggested significant biological …

Over the course of the last year I have spent nearly every weekend investigating this aquatic landscape by canoe, deciphering the differences between native and invasive flora and fauna. I am interested in ways that art can address the natural world. My thesis exhibition, Eight Thousand Daughters Woven into Bayou Braids, depicts and interprets the Louisiana landscape, exploring the destructive beauty and materiality of invasive aquatic plants.
