Communication Effectiveness And The Emerald Ash Borer Mitigation Campaign, Jonathon Heide Jan 2012

Communication Effectiveness And The Emerald Ash Borer Mitigation Campaign, Jonathon Heide

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Environmental risk communication is scrutinized by several research fields including, as Herndl and Brown (1996) show, technical communications. This technical communications thesis rhetorically analyses how large and small government agencies in the State of Minnesota communicate a specific environmental risk: emerald ash borer (EAB). EAB is an insect native to Asia and arrived in Detroit on a cargo ship sometime in the 1990s (Cappaert 2005, 153; Poland 2011, 46). By 2012, it spread to the 15 states and two Canadian provinces (USDA--APHIS 2012). EAB's life cycle will causes tree decline in Minnesota, the state with the most ash (MNDNR 2012). …

Nutrition Knowledge Of Pre-Medical Students, Jennifer Newcome, Cynthia Moore

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Nutrition knowledge has been shown to be increasingly critical in physician practice. Therefore, education has also become very critical. Medical schools have been working over the last few decades to include nutrition education in their curriculum, but due to many barriers, it is difficult to fulfil requirements. It is the purpose of this descriptive study to determine the nutrition knowledge of pre-medical students at the University of Arkansas and conclude if a nutrition class for these students would be beneficial. The average score of the nutrition knowledge assessment was 11.2 ± 3.04 out of a possible 23. Because the literature …

Influence Of Stress And Cytokinic Profiles On Cognitive Performance In Older Adults, Kerri S. Rawson Jan 2012

Influence Of Stress And Cytokinic Profiles On Cognitive Performance In Older Adults, Kerri S. Rawson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

With aging, changes in the immune system, makes cognitive performance, and the prevalence of stressors can lead to poorer overall functioning. Within the immune system, a balance should exist between cytokines regulating Th1 and Th2 immune responses; however, age-related declines in the endocrine and immune systems can disrupt this equilibrium. Several studies report higher levels of Th1 associated cytokines in inflammatory conditions of the brain, whereas fewer studies remark on Th2 associated cytokines and cognitive functioning. Declining cognitive abilities are a common concern that accompanies advancing age and some research has suggested the prevalence and impact of stressors lead …

The Electronic Structure Of Biomolecular Self-Assembled Monolayers, Matthaeus Anton Wolak Jan 2012

The Electronic Structure Of Biomolecular Self-Assembled Monolayers, Matthaeus Anton Wolak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The studies presented here address the characterization of the electronic structure of various self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) and tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) SAMs and arrays, formed on gold substrates.

PNA is a promising alternative to DNA for bio-sensing applications, as well as for strategies for self-assembly based on nucleic acid hybridization. In recent years charge transfer through PNA molecules was a focus of research due to possible applications in self-assembled molecular circuits and molecular tools. In light of this research it is interesting to investigate the electronic structure of PNA interfaces to gold, a potential electrode material.

Gender And The Crisis In Legal Education: Remaking The Academy In Our Image, Paula A. Monopoli Jan 2012

Gender And The Crisis In Legal Education: Remaking The Academy In Our Image, Paula A. Monopoli

Faculty Scholarship

American legal education is in the grip of what some have called an “existential crisis.” The New York Times proclaims the death of the current system of legal education. This is attributed, in part, to the incentivizing of faculty to produce increasingly abstract scholarship and the costs this imposes on pedagogy and the mentoring of students. At the same time, despite women graduating from law schools in significant numbers since the 1980s, they continue to lag behind in the most prestigious positions in academia—tenured, full professorships: From academic year 1998-99 to academic year 2007-08, the percentage of women full professors …

Smasse Trained Science Teachers’ Address Of Gender Issues In Classrooms, Kamau Esther Wambui

Master of Education

The importance of Science education cannot be overemphasised in today’s world that is increasingly advancing scientifically and technologically. Nonetheless, the absence of women in scientific fields reflects serious gender inequities which emanate from the classroom. This qualitative case study investigated how Strengthening Mathematics and Science in Secondary Schools (SMASSE) trained Science teachers address gender issues in their classrooms. The study was conducted in Kiambu County and engaged two male Science teachers trained in gender issues during a SMASSE training. Twelve students; six girls and six boys in Form four class also participated in the study. Multiple data collection methods, namely, …

Influence Of Secondary School Students’ Prior Conceptions On Learning Outcomes: A Case Of Hiv And Aids Education In A Secondary School In Kenya, Grace Wanjiru Kimotho Jan 2012

Influence Of Secondary School Students’ Prior Conceptions On Learning Outcomes: A Case Of Hiv And Aids Education In A Secondary School In Kenya, Grace Wanjiru Kimotho

Master of Education

The secondary HIV and AIDS education in Kenya is aimed at bringing about behavior change among the students through enabling them make informed decisions on issues regarding their sexuality to control the spread of the pandemic. An increase in case of sexually transmitted diseases, among secondary school students, pregnancy and abortions implies that secondary school students are engaging in unprotected sex predisposing themselves to HIV infection. Learners come to class with already formed ideas that explain the world around them. Some of these ideas are contrary to what is scientifically known about HIV and AIDS and have been referred to …

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Following Malignant Melanoma, Mohamad B. Dbouk, Shahriar Nafissi, Askar Ghorbani Jan 2012

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Following Malignant Melanoma, Mohamad B. Dbouk, Shahriar Nafissi, Askar Ghorbani

Neurosciences

Polyneuropathy has rarely been encountered in association with melanoma. Although this association may be a biologically plausible phenomenon considering the common embryonic origin of the melanocytes and Schwann cells with proven antibody cross reactivity, only few such cases have been reported so far. We report 2 new cases of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy in association with malignant melanoma, which we believe will add more evidence of this association. We also include a short review of the literature for similar cases.

Up In Smoke: The Place Of The Modern American Cigarette, Hannah B. Grose Jan 2012

Up In Smoke: The Place Of The Modern American Cigarette, Hannah B. Grose

Student Publications

Since its discovery, the use of tobacco products has acted as a form of meditation, social engagement, and reprieve. In the era following the late 1950’s, designated “smoking areas,” whether sequestered informally by social constraints or formally by the law, have led to a culture of very “implaced” cigarette smoking. These have become places of escape, places of exile, and places of compromise. This paper explores what it means to belong, and not to belong, to these places, and the role of designated smoking areas in the formation of our culture.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Classroom teachers deal with numerous pressures in their classrooms including students’ difficulty with reading at the middle and high school levels. Often, teachers can identify the problems, but are often unable to rectify them because of a lack of understanding and support in incorporating reading as part of their content area instruction. This research was conducted to investigate the impact of a sustained, online reading professional development on the teaching practice of middle school and high school science teachers who took the 14-week course. This grounded theory research used the reflective assignment, a comprehensive, 10-week, job-embedded assignment of 62 science …

Survey Of Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraethers (Gdgts) In Nevada And California Hot Springs And Selected T Thermophiles, Julienne J. Paraiso, Amanda Jean Williams, Brian P. Hedlund, Chuanlun L. Zhang

McNair Poster Presentations

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are core membrane lipids of many Archaea and some Bacteria found ubiquitously in soils and in many aqueous environments. Here, we examined the GDGT concentration in forty sediment samples from geothermal hot springs in the Great Basin (USA). Sediment samples were collected in tandem with extensive geochemical and site characterization. Hot spring temperatures ranged from 31 to 95°C and pH values from 6.8 to 10.7. Parametric Pearson's correlation coefficients and nonparametric Spearman's rho values were calculated to identify significant correlations between GDGT profiles and geochemical analytes. Isoprenoidal GDGTs (iGDGTs) negatively correlated with pH and positively …

Fungal Endophytes Directly Increase The Competitive Effects Of An Invasive Forb, Erik T. Aschehoug, Kerry L. Metlen, Ragan M. Callaway, George Newcombe

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Competitive outcomes among plants can vary in different abiotic and biotic conditions. Here we tested the effects of two phylotypes of Alternaria endophytes on the growth, competitive effects, and competitive responses of the exotic invasive forb Centaurea stoebe. Centaurea stoebe was a better competitor against North American grass species than grasses from its European home range in the absence of endophytes. However, one endophyte both increased the biomass of C. stoebe and reduced the competitive effect of North American grasses on C. stoebe. The competitive effects of C. stoebe on grass species native to North America were enhanced by both …

Although Arctic tundra has been estimated to cover only 8% of the global land surface, the large and potentially labile carbon pools currently stored in tundra soils have the potential for large emissions of carbon (C) under a warming climate. These emissions as radiatively active greenhouse gases in the form of both CO2 and CH4 could amplify global warming. Given the potential sensitivity of these ecosystems to climate change and the expectation that the Arctic will experience appreciable warming over the next century, it is important to assess whether responses of C exchange in tundra regions are likely …

New Species Of Gondwanamyces From Dying Euphorbia Trees In South Africa, Johannes Alwyn Van Der Linde, Diana Six, Michael J. Wingfield, Jolanda Roux

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Gondwanamyces and its Custingophora anamorphs were first described from Protea infructescences in South Africa. Subsequently these unusual fungi were also found on Cecropia in Central America. During an investigation into the decline and death of native Euphorbia trees in South Africa, several fungal isolates resembling the anamorph state of Gondwanamyces were obtained from diseased tissues. In this study these isolates are identified based on morphology and comparisons of DNA sequences. Two previously unknown Gondwanamyces species were identified, both were associated with damage caused by beetles (Cossonus sp.). Inoculation studies showed that the new species of Gondwanamyces are pathogenic on Euphorbia …

The Effect Of Fire On Spatial Separation Between Wolves And Caribou, Hugh S. Robinson, Mark Hebblewhite, Nicholas J. Decesare, Jessie Whittington, Layla Neufeld, Mark Bradley, Marco Musiani

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Fire management is an important conservation tool in Canada’s national parks. Fires can benefit some species, while others may be negatively impacted. We used GPS and VHF collar data for 47 wolves from 12 separate packs and 153 caribou from 5 separate herds, and resource selection analysis to model the effects of fire on these species’ habitat and potential interactions. Resource selection modeling showed that wolves select for burned areas and areas close to burns, presumably due to the presence of primary prey (i.e., elk and moose), while caribou avoid burns. Fire reduced the amount of high quality caribou habitat …
